In 2014, for the first time in its history, the Netherlands celebrated King's Day (Koningsdag) instead of Queen's Day: since the coronation of King Willem-Alexander, the country now has a male monarch.
Previously, this festival was celebrated on April 30th, which was Queen Juliana's birthday, retained as the date by Queen Beatrix, as her own birthday in January was not suited to the outdoor festivities. King's Day is celebrated each year on April 27 (the new King's birthday), except when it falls on a Sunday.
Although the name of the festival has changed, the joyful, celebratory spirit remains the same. All of Amsterdam turns into an exuberant party during this festival, with everyone dressed in orange. Along the canals and in the city's streets and squares an impressive number of festivities take place, including live concerts and entertainment. During the day, flea market stalls take over the city's streets.
