I love this hotel, it’s warm, welcoming professionally run by young hard working staff the rooms are clean the beds are super comfortable it’s quiet the breakfast is fresh nutritious and varied special mention to Bianca Nunes Guest Experience Manager she takes the time to connect with her guests and find out who they are and how she can assist them, she makes sure you have everything you need for a great stay, it’s so refreshing to be treated so warmly compared to the usual corporate anonymous hotel experience. The restaurant is also worth a mention as it is exceptional I had dinner here and breakfast and both meals were delicious and freshly cooked.

I've stayed at this hotel a few times and this was the best yet. I stayed in a 'medium mama' which was a good size and had all the mod cons. I liked the fact I could open the window for fresh air, and of course there was air con too. The room was clean and housekeeping refreshed the room very well each day. I was looked after during check in and check out by Herman who was very friendly and efficient and keen to ensure I had a great stay. I will certainly return. The hotel is a short 5 minute walk to the nearby Overground station and you can then easily access the underground to travel around the city.

Underwhelming experience

Our stay at Mama Shelter Shoreditch was underwhelming to say the least. I booked a twin room for a friend and I at a fixed rate so paid at the time of booking. It was not made clear during the booking process that fixed rates were not amendable nor refundable upon cancellation, regardless of notice given so when our friend had to move the date of her birthday celebration to the Saturday, I wasn’t hopeful that the hotel would be able to accommodate a change but Hamish, a reservation agent very kindly agreed to do so, subject to my paying additional monies on check in as the rate for a Saturday was more expensive. On arrival, I was almost charged the full amount again and when I told the receptionist I had already paid the full amount for the Friday, I just had to pay the difference and showed her the email from reservations confirming as much, she took my phone from me and disappeared out the back. I thought this was quite peculiar as if it required management attention, I would have expected them to come to the desk and not have my personal phone taken from me. When we got to the room, whilst it looked nice enough, I was surprised to find there was no wardrobe, there was a peg with some hangers by the window but the space was obscured by a worktop meaning that you couldn’t really hang anything long there like a maxi dress or jumpsuit. The beds were small but comfortable but the table and benches next to one of the beds made it feel quite crowded. There was also a kettle with some tea and coffee and a small fridge and a decent hairdryer but no iron/ironing board which would have been good. We both slept well and found the room to be quiet and a good temperature. The check out time is also a very reasonable 12pm although I had to call to obtain this information is it is nowhere to be found on the website. So I took the opportunity to have a slow and leisurely morning before checking out. Later that afternoon I realised that I had left my iPhone charger plugged in at the side of the bed and emailed the hotel to ask if it would be possible to have it sent to my home address if I covered the postage. I didn’t get a response to my email by the following morning so called the hotel and spoke to Nicholas who asked if they had confirmed to me that they had found my charger, I told him that I had had no response to my email at all but that I had definitely left it plugged in beside the bed as the hotel was the only place that I had used it. He checked the system and nonchalantly said we have no record of a charger being found so nothing we can do. So if you stay here, please be very careful to make sure that you do NOT leave anything behind as if you do, it’s likely you will not see it again. Overall our stay was comfortable and the downstairs looked good but I think the hotel is more style over substance and I have had much better experiences for the same kind of price point in other hotels in London.

Not getting the basics right when it comes to being a hotel. breakfast that I paid extra for was buffet style with certain items not replaced quickly, tables still covered in other guests plates that had to be moved by myself before eating. Loud noise in dining room from music being played during breakfast and night when private party was ongoing well into late evening . Paid a lot extra for window in room but looked into an internal area with absolutely no view whatsoever , no point in having window! Bed was too hard but pillows way to soft, nearly disintegrated to nothing when putting head on them! Had to pay 50 pound deposit when arriving, even though i paid for room 9 months in advance! trying to make up for the above issues by being a bit wacky but failing.
