« Lovely hotel »

This was about a 10 minute walk from the station. Quiet area away from the bustling city shops and bars but only a 10minute walk away. Hotel was lovely and clean and the staff very friendly and helpful. Being a member I was upgraded to a privilege room which was amazing.

« Basement room - now window! »

We booked this room the day you went on sale as a new hotel. As a reward for likely being one of your first new bookings we were allocated a basement room with no window. At no point prior to booking was I made aware that the room would have no window, or that you even had basement rooms,or I would not have booked it. I'm claustrophobic and found the room to be very disorientating and panic inducing. I immediately requested a room change on arrival but was told this wasn't possible, even though we checked in at 3.30pm and don't believe that all other rooms had checked in at this point. This room should not be sold as a standard room at the same price as other rooms and guests should be made aware of the lack of windows at the time of booking. The room was also not cleaned to a good standard, wine bottle lids on the floor by the bed that didn't belong to us, dirty smudged taps and no milk in the jars above the kettle for our morning brew. The door outside our room banged every time someone went through it and needs a soft closing hinge on it, kept us awake in the night. Hotel paintwork also all chipped near the lift and in the corridor. Not what we expected from a new Mercure.

Inefficient check in. Uncomfortably high beds. Only one chair in room. Poorly designed bathroom with over-complicated shower. Poor quality sheets and towels.

The air-condition was too loud in my room. Given it is a hotel for business visitor, the hotel doesn't provide a quiet room for meetings. I had to pay late check out in order to have a meeting in my room.

« Not Quite There »

I stayed for two nights at the Mercury. The room was reasonably spacious and clean and I had a good nights sleep in the comfortable bed. I very disappointed at having to ring for over 20 minutes to order some food for my room. When the food did arrive it was OK, but there was no napkin on the tray or any salt and pepper. Worse still, the tray was still in the hall the following morning. Breakfast was good with freshly cooked ingredients but on the second morning when I came down at 6:45 they were not ready yet breakfast starts at 6:30. On checkout I was told my bill would be emailed to me. I have not received this yet. Still some work to do here.

When I arrived for a two night stay, my booking was not in the system despite having a booking reference and email. It took some time to resolve, when the the receptionist identified that there were still rooms available they should have booked me in straight away allowed me to go to room. Whatever mix up could have been resolved without me standing there in reception.

I would not stay here again. On arrival I was asked if I would like an additional £30 deduction from my credit card for any extras, I said no and was then told it was hotel policy, no choice. The room was basic, no way of contacting reception. The television didn’t work, so I went to reception and was told someone would come to room and nobody did. The room was too hot and the noise from outside with windows opened prevented sleep. The shower had no pressure and the water was tepid.

Rooms we’re nice and clean but the air con was really loud and wouldn’t switch off . Breakfast had all the main items messing and the staff were quite rude .

« Style over substance »

Awful stay in room 309 what should have been a wedding anniversary stay turned into a catalogue of disappointment - I assume the maid thought I was staying in the room on my own. Only 1 robe, 1 bottle of water, 1 bottle of soda and rather bizarrely one bedside table!! The air con didn’t work neither did the tv when I complained and asked for assistance the gentlemen informed me the tv was faulty and that we could move rooms but this was at 6pm so we made do - there was no offer of a comp drink or breakfast terrible service.

We stayed on a Sunday so expected it to be quiet. When I checked in at 4ish I was checked into a room that when I entered had not been cleaned since the previous guests had left, so I went back to reception to be reallocated a clean room. After no apology from the reception staff I was moved to an incredibly small room, despite booking for 2 adults, and so went back to reception and offered to pay the difference for an upgrade to be moved to another room. At this point I was kindly offered a larger room at no expense, which was greatly apprecaited. However, as I left reception to go to my new room another guest came back to reception who had also been allocated a room that still had not been serviced from the previous guest, and again I heard no apology for the inconvenience to this guest either. The bathroom in the the final room had not been completely cleaned from the previous guests either, with hairs in the shower and a wet floor towel hung over the bath. However, as the rest of the room was comfortable we did not complain. My wife joined me later in the evening and as we had a drink in the bar, we overheard an odd coversation between the bar staff and a guest about a female member of staff and my wife was shocked to hear the barman pass a comment vert similar to "well you know what women are like, they take everything personally". I discouraged her from challenging him about this sexist remark and we left the bar. Overall, the the room we eventually found ourselves in was very comfortable, but the experience was odd, with the hotel feeling mismanaged, disorganised and with staff that failed to represent the brand credibly.

The bathrom was dirty on check in, with blood on the underside of the toilet sat and urine marks on the floor. This was reported to staff who said the room would be cleaned when we were out. Regreatably this did not happen. Otherwise the stay was very good.

« One Last Chance to Get it R. »

This was my second stay here, this time for two nights. The room was ok, although there was very little desk space - just a small table instead. I was still unhappy after my first stay, when I did not recieve a drinks voucher (I am a Platinum member), and after viewing on TripAdvisor I was told to get in touch with the hotel and some complimentary points would be added to my account. I did email, but received no response whatsoever. This time, breakfast was the problem - it was a shambles. There were no plates out for the self-service elements, and the African cook was just standing around. Guests had to ask for the plates and put them out ourselves. Unlike most hotels, there is no breakfast buffet for the hot food, one has to order it. The service was incredibly slow, it took 30mins in total, time I just didn't have in the morning. When the food eventually arrived, the sausages weren't cooked properly, so I just didn't eat them. The whole breakfast process was a total shambles. I didn't even bother trying the next morning. I will be visiting again next week, five nights this time, and if they don't get it R. next time I will never use this hotel again. I have never had such a bad experience from Accor.
