« Poor quality »

Room key did not work and I had to approach reception 2 times to get the situation sorted. The room was approximately 80 meters from reception. It transpires the battery in the door lock had run out so it was unable to register the key card. Overall the hotel was untidy, particularly the reception area. Finally after returning from dinner at a local restaurant, I searched for the television remote control, but this was missing from the room. Also the TV did not have an arial plugged into the back of it so I couldn’t even set a channel manually. Sadly a poor experience at this Mercury, which isn’t what I usually have. Thank you.

Firstly when I booked my room I telephoned the hotel and advised I was disabled and had an assistance dog - response "We do not accept dogs", I advised you can not refuse my assistance dog response "Yes we can we do not accept dogs". After a discussion they accepted my dog. I arrive at the hotel - they have been told I am disabled and have an assistance dog so what do they do they put me on the top floor of a hotel without a lift - great idea. Made comments and the room was changed. The room itself was so small, in the bathroom I could not even empty out my toilet bag there was no place to put anything not even a tiny little shelf. There was no arm chair in the room. The advertising picture for this hotel is one of an older English House you expecting something special forget it enter the place a its like a war zone with wall paper being stripped off and being left on wet marble floors. The decoration in the bedroom was not good with paint having been missed on wood work. At night the bedroom doors slam no peaceful sleep.The only good thing about the place is a lady who works in the resturant she was called Sam what a person, but the food in the place has no nothing special.I passed comment to the duty manager on my arrival day and all she wanted to tell me was that it had been a Devere Hotel so what I had booked a miserable hotel that had changed its group company. On check out I was made to pay £109 for one day and £134 for the other day when I asked about this at reception I was told that Head Office changes the rate daily and its nothing to do with the hotel. I also had a charge to my room of £5 which was classed as "Bar lunch" well as I was in the City of London I could not see how I could have had a bar lunch as the hotel was outside Watford. It was explained as a Dinner charge that always came up on the computer as a "Bar Lunch" strange computer.Any betting management are not interested !!!!!!!!

« Cleaning Was Very Poor But Breakfast Was Truly Excellent. »

We stayed 2 nights at this hotel and had a lovely time except for some basic problems, some of which could be easily resolved. The main problem we had was with the cleaning. Our room (and we assume all other rooms in the hotel) could do with a proper clean on a regular basis – examples of cleaning problems that we encountered were: 1) we found a length of white toilet paper in the bedroom behind one of the side tables (not very nice); 2) we found broken glass on the floor in the bedroom (luckily we didn’t cut our feet); 3) we found a ball of screwed up black paper under the main desk – this should have been removed when the room was previously cleaned; 4) we found small plastic clothes ties on the floor in the bedroom – a good vacuum session would have removed these; 5) the bathroom’s shower rose head had a thick coating of dust and dirt on top of it (never been cleaned). Our room was not serviced during our 2 night stay – during our 1st morning, we left our “Clean the room now please” sign on our door handle for the maids and then passed all the cleaning trolleys in the corridor on our way out – when we returned the trolleys were gone but our room was as we left it, unmade and dirty. Other cleaning problems we found included thick dust in the restaurant on wooden slats around the walls – these should be feather-dusted at least once a week (easy to do) – we then thought that if the restaurant is dirty, what was the kitchen like? Another problem with the restaurant was that our cutlery had finger marks on the eating part of the utensils – it’s obvious that when the cutlery is removed from the dishwasher, the utensils are lifted out by holding the eating part of each knife/fork/spoon – the kitchen staff should be retrained on how to empty a dishwasher – tipping out the basket of cutlery onto a clean cloth, is probably the best way to pick up cutlery without touching the eating part. Other people’s dirty finger prints on eating utensils is quite disgusting and not at all hygienic. Other comments: the double rooms are extremely small for 2 people; there is only 1 chair in the room to sit on, so a 2nd person has to stand or sit on the bed which is not comfortable after a while; the swimming pool was usually being used by children’s swimming lesson classes and not available to guests (if the hotel wants to make money from this scheme, they should at least allocate half or a third of the pool for guests to use – they are the ones paying a lot of money to stay at the hotel, and not the children or their parents); the new hotel rooms are in a new block a great distance away from reception, restaurant and bar – on arrival, we had to carry our heavy bags from reception to our room, a very long way away (we saw a baggage trolley near reception but it was not manned and we didn’t think we would need it to carry our bags miles away – it was like the hotel had a spare field nearby to use and thought “let’s build some more rooms in an extension in that field way over there” – if we had been elderly, it would have been a real problem for us – I suggested to Reception that the hotel should buy a motorised golf cart for guests to use and they said they were considering it. One thing that made us smile was a sign on a wall with the hotel chain’s mission statement on it – it said that they were proud of looking after all the finer details (using mild steel screws that rust on the bathroom floor is not looking after all the finer points) – the French owners should secretly visit and stay at this hotel in a normal room and try out all the facilities for themselves. Saying all that, our 1st night’s dinner was excellent, as was the service. The service at this hotel is very good and friendly, except for many of the staff who don’t seem to speak any English. Also, our 1st morning’s breakfast was a waiter service due to a lack of enough guests for a buffet – the full English breakfast was truly excellent and possibly the best we have ever had, so it is obvious that the hotel’s chef is a good one - well done, chef - a delicious breakfast! 10/10! Would we return? Probably not, unless it was to show us how all the above problems had been resolved. We wish the hotel the very best of luck – they will need it.

« Short but sweet! »

Visited the Mercure hotel for a Golden Wedding celebration. Lovely venue and held in a large marquee. The hotel very clean & tidy. Long walk to the very small classic bedrooms. Really not happy that this large hotel does not offer 24 hour room service for food!

I organised my parents golden wedding anniversary party to be at your hotel, great location and venue for this. All the staff were great. Thank to hotel and DJ for keeping the info quiet about having the surprise singing waiters as part of the event when liaising with my parents about stuff.

Very young and inexperienced staff who were unwilling or unable to help with many things. Poor choice of food, offered pretty much the same menu for the Friday and the Saturday night. When the food arrived eventually (chaotic service) it was cold. Very upsetting after spending so much money

Difficult place to find as signs don't stand out, we drove past it. If we had been staying for more than one night the room we were given although very nice was up too mant steps for my mother who is 81 years young. The food we had was very good. All staff very friendly and helpful although knowledge of local area very limited.

When we asked for things the hotel accomodated us for example we asked for a twin room, once we arrived there the room was a double we asked for the bed tonbe split, which they did.... but there were things such as blood washed into the sheets or stains. Also there were lots of marks and scratchs etc on the doors and furnature. Whilst it was a lovely bathroom, the floor was stained the mirrors had marks on the taps and shower had water stains on the glass and silverware. The room service was very tasty. So whilst some bits were nice, some other bits let it down.

I arrived with my daughter around 8 PM after a nice visit at Warner Bros Harry Potter experience and received the key-card to room 50. Renovation work was ongoing in the facilities. In the restaurant I had to ask people working in the kitchen if it's possible to order something to eat. After approximately 10 minutes a nice man showed up. Eventually we were told the burgers were not available and chose something else. The quality of food was OK. The waiting time was not. After dinner we went to our room and the blinds fell down... After calling the reception & further waiting the nice man showed up once again. He concluded it was not possible to fix the blinds and we eventually had to move to room 54. Cracks around the windows made it quite cold. The AC fan was extremely annoying and disturbing. Only solution was to shut it off. On a positive note I can say we really appreciated the breakfast, it was better than expected. The "nice man" was as well a positive. I have stayed with Accorhotels before and have not experienced the same negative impressions. Having said that I would appreciate some kind of compensation since the delivery didn't match normal expectations from Accorhotels.

I booked this hotel over the phone for me and my boyfriends anniversay. I got told that our room would be upgraded, be on a high floor, there would be a welcome pack and also be the most memorable experience. Upon arrival there was no sign telling us where reception was and there seemed to be a lot of building works going on. I got given the room key and told to find our room. Upon finding the room we got put in a bog standard room where you could hardly swing a cat with no welcome pack and no congratulations or anything. I wasn’t told that there was building works going on either. The building works were horrible, I do have pictures of required. We got moved rooms after I threatened to leave but the room was dirty with cobwebs and rose petals under the bed. Which clearly means the room has not been cleaned properly ?.. you need to state more that the rooms are NOT in the main building, that the rooms are small, that there is building works going on etc.. I will not be returning again !

« Great staff terrible room »

Staff at the hotel were second to none, all really friendly and great help with all questions. Hotel reception, bar and restaurant all nice and clean and value for money. Only downfall from are stay was the most important part and that’s the room. My wife is 8 months pregnant and this was are only break so the last thing we expected was two single beds pushed together. As I didn’t go for the cheapest room I wasn’t expecting are room to be so cramped. The wardrobe covered the bathroom door, iron didn’t work and to use the kettle we had to unplug TV. Are conditioning wasn’t easy to use so after not finding any instructions we gave up trying to figure out. We didn’t leave the hotel relaxed and refreshed which was the whole point of are trip. Unless there was a upgrade to rooms we wouldn’t be returning.

When I arrived, my umbrella was taken by one of your staff. Next morning I looked for it, it was gone. I was upset as this umbrella was a gift from my mother in law ( now passed away). It was a clear dome shaped one with a black rim. It was sentimental to me. I did feel staff weren’t that interested.

« Our Red Letter Day was truly a Red Letter Day »

I booked a Red Letter Day visit to the Harry Potter Studios which included lunch at the Hunton Park Hotel. Because of the distance I booked my daughter and myself an overnight stay as well. Lunch was exceptional in the Bar restaurant; our room was lovely, comfortable and clean; and there was so much choice for a really filling breakfast. All staff were friendly and attentive; the 2 young men we say at Reception during our stay couldn't do enough to help, and the restaurant staff at breakfast were also most attentive and ensured everywhere stayed tidy and clean. It really was a lovely stay.
