« Last minute booking »

I was travelling from Glasgow to Southampton and had to pull over for a rest due to tiredness and it getting late in the evening. Pulling into the car park, it was that dark I could hardly see where I was walking due to there being no floodlighting, in the hotel there were buckets all over the corridor area on the 3rd floor and disgusting damp stained carpets. The room had a smell of damp and the air conditioning control display did not work to try and turn the temperature up as it was cold in the room (308) Had it not have been so late in the evening and had just not been so exhausted from a 6hour drive I would have asked for a refund and found another hotel. Not what I had previously experienced in other Mercure hotels and quite disappointing

Booked for one night, staff were courteous and friendly, sorting out a mix up very quickly. Room was clean and good sized with a very large and comfy bed. Didn't have the breakfast but will try next time.

The room was spacious, comfortable bed and clean. All meals included bar meals, were only served till 9:00 pm which was disappointing as the leisure was open till 9:00 pm. Price was competitive, would definitely be back when working in the area.

On previous stays I have had issues with broken or poor quality beds and showers not working or being cold However on this stay in am pleased to say the room was clean as always and very comfortable. The only small issue this time was the TV couldn't receive a signal. The lady on reception offered to move me but I said I was happy to watch TV on my laptop. Reception staff were extremely courteous and helpful as always. I didn't eat at the restuarant as in the past I have not been satisfied with the food and so I usually get a takeaway.

« Extremely disappointing, not four star and would never return. »

No fridge in room. No TV Remote in room, had 2 episodes when reception staff brought a remote to us only to find it didn't work. No room service overnight for food, excuse given that a porter had walked out the night before and hadn't come in that night, so there was no one to prepare any food. Bedside lamps, both main lamps not working and one of the weird looking stems with a light on the end protruding from the bottom of the fitting had a flickering bulb that kept going off. Waiting a full TEN MINUTES for hot water to come through in the bathroom. After complaining the next morning, got a phone call later informing me that the manager had sanctioned a 20% refund. Just not good enough. … Return ? I'd rather sleep in a doorway!

« Okay, but suspected food poisoning ruined the experience of wedding attending »

Room fairly clean, bathroom door and skirtings in need of replacement. No hot water either so had to change room. Bed comfy and spacious. Attending wedding all day and last thing before bed had an accute bout of sickness which I can only attribute to the breakfast. All food was sat in hot plates and not hot or well cooked. Had not been anywhere else all day so must of been something I ate in the hotel. Not impressed at all and I was not the only one in the wedding party! Staff were generally friendly and helpful although very disinterested. Will not be returning and will be reporting to food standards.

« No hot water in the morning, no smoking room stank of tobacco »

Room207, nicely decorated, spacious, supposedly non smoking stank of tobacco as did stairways not just a whiff but heavily contaminated. In the morning no hot water and when reported to reception told they would reset boiler so obviously a common occurance still not warm 15/20 mins later Tried twice to contact hotel by phone ,no answer! Pity as I have used hotel quite a few times with its various owners. I used pool which was very good.

Staff lovely and friendly, Hotel very clean, airy and modern. I had booked with 'booking.com' and although the reservation was in their system, it had not been forwarded to the hotels system, but the lady on reception dealt with it quickly and efficiently, next time I can book directly with the hotel.

Great. A table was brought to us at my request as we were playing very detailed and complicated dungeon crawler tabletop games. This assisted me greatly as I’m making a similar game online. Basically my genius is going to make me rich.

The staff are good, particularly Adam on reception who is a great asset for the business Breakfast was vile - stale croissants and a disgraceful cooked breakfast. I conplained at reception.

I have family in St Helens and have stayed at this location for many years and I am happier with the hotel currently than I have been in the past. Pro - room was spotless, excellent shower, comfortable bed, efficient AC, breakfast and associated staff member was great. Con - mixed quality of check-in staff, my used breakfast tray lay outside my room for 26 hours Despite alerting the check-in staff after 10 hours. The stairwell had a suffocating stench of mold.

Enjoyed the stay from the moment we arrived until our departure. The hotel was very clean and comfortable. The staff were friendly and helpful. The hotel is well situated for shops and bars etc. My daughter and her partner being well into fitness were more than delighted with the gym and pool. A great stay was had by all !

« Not a great experience..... »

Ok the good points 1) the beds are big, i mean big, you cross time zones moving from one side to the other, and comfortable too. 2) Other hotels take note, a plug socket next to bedside table, for you know charging your phone. So many hotels now hide or blank off plug sockets. So great to find one in an ideal location. Now the bad Got out of the lift on the top floor, and met with a 5ft water damage mark on the floor, with a bucket catching the water, which looked like the water from a radiator. Made way along corridor to see another bucket at the end of the corridor. Went into the room, key card worked first time ( this was the only time in the entire stay) and there was a strong damp smell. Thought possibly not a room used much, as was late 23:15 so bag down quick wash and to bed. Good nights sleep. Shower, good, hot and powerful. Clothes on and walked over to the window to open the curtains, in my socks ( why did i not put shoes on....) and my socks instantly became soaking wet. Puzzled i investigated, the carpet was water logged, so much so if i pressed down the water pooled around my foot or finger. On checking there was a towel collecting water on the windowsill, totally soaking, and then a 3-4 ft area of carpet around the window was soaked through. Now the damp smell made sense. few other things found that morning, telly did not work, had to plug in the areal in the back of the TV. On way down to breakfast, lift would not call, so took the stairs, that was a mistake, opened the door ( this time i had shoes on) the carper was even more waterlogged, the smell almost made me sick. Paint pealing off the wall, water leaking from the ceiling. The hotel is in a shocking state, and it seems to come through in the staff, the service was not great, breakfast was not great, had far better, Lenny Henry would not have been impressed.... TV in the breakfast area was on the other side of where the tables were set up, so you could hear it, but no see it. Staff had a good view of it though. Was an experience, but one i wont be repeating.
