« Way too noisy with heavy doors banging all day from housekeeping! »

Unfortunately, we paid a lot of money to be next door to the housekeeping closets. Many doors to the closets and the nearby rooms were opened and closed multiple times instead of propping them open. The doors are very thick and heavy and therefore slam closed very loudly. Also, there are big gaps on the sides and bottom of the doors that contribute to all the noises coming in from the halls.

We could hear the people in the other rooms adjacent all night Our bathroom door did not close. I would expect with the price we paid to have a superb stay. We also went to the bar and the bartender was rude. Overall not very satisfied

We had a room in the corner of the building that viewed the rooftop construction. The gal that checked us in said it was an upgrade for our 15 year anniversary, but the view was strange.

Service was just ok at check in. No parking instruction and I felt I was being rushed. I expressed this to another front desk staff and she didn’t say anything. No acknowledgement. The stay got better and I do see the charm. But the first impression wasn’t great.

I have stayed at the Empress before, but not for many years. I wanted to visit with old friends, and also relatives that live in Victoria. Once again, I found the Empress the ideal place to stay and extend some hospitality to people that I respect. I like the central location and beautiful surroundings. The breakfasts were the highlight of each day.

Great stay but we wish we would have known about the V2V from Vancouver to you. We found it walk while we were there we took it back the Vancouver for the remainder of our stay. When I called prior to arriving we were told to take a float plane plans a taxi. Every guest should know about the V2V

Our third visit over the years and still enjoying the elegance and warmth of the Empress in Victoria. Staff as always is courteous, and responsive to our needs. Room was well appointed, spacious and comfy. Love the in-house boutiques and the history showcased at the hotel. Sorry to learn that the Bengal Lounge is no more...one of our favorite places when we have stayed at the Empress. Please bring it back!

The Empress is a very nice hotel. The lobby is a little modern for such a grand old hotel but to each their own. I would have preferred more wood and Victorian splendor. The location of the hotel is what attracted us to it. We got a harbor view and it was spectacular day and night. Everything seems to be close to the Empress. We walked everywhere. The only time we did not walk was to take the shuttle to Butchart Gardens. Even then the shuttle left from right in front of the Empress. The rooms are small but comfortable and the remodel was done well. Everything looked and functioned as it should. The rooms are small for the price but since you are staying in a piece of history that is to be expected. The best part about staying at the Empress was interacting with the staff. Every interaction was spot on. From check in to check out all the staff were very helpful and professional. you are obviously doing a great job selecting and training your people. There are two staff members in particular that deserve recognition. The universe, for whatever reason, did not want us to leave Victoria. We asked Hannah (concierge) to assist us in getting seats on the Clipper to Seattle. It did not leave at the time we wanted so we tried to get on a sea plane to Seattle. That also did not leave when we wanted so we decided to go with the Clipper. Unfortunately by that time the Clipper sold out. (DARN!) So not it was back to the sea plane. This process took around 24 hours and a lot of work by Hannah. This is while she was also dealing with several other guests. She stayed late and came in early to help us. She was patient with our indecision and was calm and efficient in a stressful situation. Be sure to let her know we appreciate her helpfulness. The second person the deserves recognition was Iva (concierge). We went to board the sea plane that Hannah booked for us. Our flight was cancelled! In fact, all flights to Seattle on Kenmore Air were cancelled due to high winds. (DARN!) So we went back to the Empress to seek more help. At this point we had checked out and were not even guests any more but Iva help us out. Iva booked us a flight the next day and booked us a room at the Empress for the night. Iva went above and beyond by giving us a better room for the rate we paid for our old room. The new room was larger and had a better view. Please tell Iva that we appreciate her help. One last thing. The last night of our stay at the Empress (Aug 1) we went to the lounge for a drink. There was a woman playing the guitar and singing. We didn't get her name but she was excellent. We sat and listened for about an hour. You should keep her coming back. We couldn't be happier with our stay at the Empress. Since we have relatives whom recently moved to Whidbey Island we will visit the area often in the future. This will include trips to Victoria. We will make a point to stay at the Empress.

nice room, not so great window view - over the loading dock, nice room accommodations, loved the pool and the fitness center, easy to get to convention center, good location for walking around town, beautiful rose garden. Two areas for improvement: 1 - the constant noise in the hot tub/spa was annoying when swimming for 45 minutes a day; 2-print on shampoo, conditioner, shower gel is way too small - hard to read in shower when I don't have my glasses with me. Either larger print on label or different color caps so those of us with glasses can know which is which.

Everything was excellant. Loved the turn down service and bottles of water. All staff always very friendly and welcoming. Sadly room service was not it's best on the Monday morning ie they forgot an order and brought the wrong item. Lounge service was great as always and family friendly.

« My stay destroyed everything I every believed the Empress to be and made me realize the Empress will never be able to be the experience for my children that it once was for me, and the generation of family before me. »

Terrible from the minute we arrived, so much so that I am not quite sure where to begin or end, it was one long sad experience. At check-in I was left waiting for my suite in the lobby, with my 4 children, and a lobby filled with tour bus patrons (even though we were there an hour before the tour bus arrived.) My family and I waited for our room for 2 hours. I was told our room was cleaned but waiting for final release and that I would be sent a text, “so just keep looking for the text, it will come any time.” At almost 5pm (final check in is at 4:00) I went back to the front desk and explained that my family and I were going to miss our 5pm Tea reservation, my children still needed to change! I was very stressed at this point. I was directed to the locker room and told we could change in there. We could take our bags out of baggage storage and into the locker room in the gym, after we change (all 5 of us) we could then recheck in our bags for holding and head to tea. I was told that after tea, at about 6:00 or 6:30 our room would be ready and we could “go up” at that time. I know we are paying for a suite (over $1250.00) from 4pm on, so I know this is ridiculous! At tea, which I already paid for including gratuity, I was told that gratuity was not included in the payment. I told the very nice server that gratuity was in fact included in my package. I was told, "there are so many packages I can not keep track, let me go check again." The server came back and said, "no I am sorry, gratuity is not included." So I left a very nice gratuity for a very nice person. I regretted that my 4 kids spent their tea watching their mom discuss money confusion with the Empress server, it was awkward. After tea my children and I went to our room, finally, which turned out to not be the room promised or paid for (Where is our roll away? Why does this room not look like any web picture or what the central reservation described?) I called down to the manager to discuss our afternoon with the Empress - the cattle call check-in, the tea gratuity mix up, and our room. I requested our promised roll away. The manager confirmed that tea gratuity was in fact already prepaid by me and that she would remove the overcharge of gratuity left at the time of tea from my bill (this did not actually occur, I had to follow up with a different staff member who finally got the overpayment removed.) I also addressed that my family and I were treated likes heads of cattle in a herd of tour bus arrivals, and that we waited for 2 hours for our room. She simply confirmed, "that is how it is in summer, I am sorry that you had a bad experience." I addressed that our room was not as promised. I was told by central reservations to book this particular suite because it had two double beds, a sofa, and could accommodate a roll away bed. I booked the suite at the direction of central reservations because there are 5 of us. After booking with central reservations, about 5 days before arrival, I confirmed my booking directly with the Empress property. I confirmed there would be a roll away, tea, etc. I confirmed again with the property the night before we arrived. The manager told me, " Your room does not allow a roll away because of fire code." I explained that I did not understand because I was told to book this particular suite. The manager replied, "Central reservations does not understand the configuration of our hotel, it is an older property, not every suite configuration is the same." I told her I booked the particular suite that is coded for a roll away, and then I asked if this suite does not in fact take a roll away, then why did central reservations tell me it did? And why did the property confirm? The manager told me that the Empress does actually have this particular suite with room configurations that will accept a roll away, but I was not given one of those rooms when I checked in. I confirmed, “So you are telling me that there are rooms like I booked, with roll away availability in a double bed sofa suite, but I was not given one of those rooms?” She told me that she “wished she could move me,” but the rooms were booked and she couldn't. She said, "What I can do is send someone up to make up the sofa bed." Knowing that there was no other room, and exhausted, and not wanting my family to experience this stress and frustration with me on 'vacation' any longer, I said, "fine, please make up the sofa." I took my family to the pool, hoping they could have some fun, after all. When we returned the sofa bed was pulled out, with sheet and blanket, but there were no sleeping pillows and the couch cushions were tossed about the room. I took yet another trip down to the lobby to talk with the front desk. The manager I talked with earlier was not locatable. I relayed to the front desk that the sofa bed was pulled out but there were no pillows. They said they would send someone up... again. At this time, it was also confirmed that my bill for tea came through with both gratuities on it - the manager never removed the overpayment. I was so frustrated! I was offered a coupon for breakfast for my trouble, and took it, but still wanted the room I was promised, and still wondered where my family would appropriately sleep that evening (does my 17 year old son sleep in the bed with my 10 year old daughter or on the floor- like a dog?) Later in the evening we found two inside out pillow cases thrown on a table. I guess they were meant for me to turn right side in and put onto the pillows myself. That is what I did. This portion of my family "vacation" was fixing laundry, locating pillows in closets, and making up beds in a "luxury" hotel suite. At bed time I just hoped tomorrow would be better, and knew I would never, ever be back to the Empress. I just wanted to forget all of my previous experiences that at the Empress that I had hope to share with my children, it was too sad after this day. I went into the bathroom and found that my Empress robe had black grease stains across the bottom, I think it had been run over by the laundry cart. I both cried and laughed and took a picture thinking that no one would actually believe all of this! Realizing no one would ever believe this could possibly happen at the “luxury” Empress hotel, I ended up taking pictures of the broken window blind and the broken and unusable alarm clock that couldn't be set because the knob was missing. I wished I would have taken a picture of the laundry bags, filled with dirty bed sheets and towels, lining the hotel hallways on my top floor, for 4 hours. I wish I would have taken a picture of the giant blue plastic 3 tiered industrial laundry cart left outside our room door for hours (not a room attendant cart, a large plastic industrial cart from the laundry storage.) Literally, my 17 year old son said, "Ok mom, I figured it out, all of our problems from check in through the fact that I can't get my sofa made up are about laundry and room cleaning." I said, "No, because of the whole Tea gratuity and no roll away thing." Really? A teenage kid sees this? Why does the management of this "luxury" hotel not see it? I am a single mom who commutes 4 hours a day to my job as a professor. I saved, and saved, and saved for this vacation this year with my family. I chose a few days of an Empress "Luxury " experience. I wanted to show my children the history of our family getaways, where I used to go when I was a girl, where their father and I honeymooned. I wanted to introduce the history of the Empress to the next generation. Instead, I felt a fool in front of my children. Instead, I apologized. This was the worst, most stressful experience I have ever had on vacation, and it was caused by the Empress. And I paid for it.
