I remember way back when I was a kid in the 60's living is San Francisco and seeing the Fairmont hotel there and being told this is one of those luxury hotels for rich folks. At that time staying in a room at the Fairmont seemed like something that would never happen. Well, after last week, when I stayed at the Fairmont in San Jose, I realize that the Fairmont is no longer all that! Yes, we got a special rate because my work booked a block of room for a meeting but did they have to give us the worst rooms they had? And even if they did how could ANY of their room be such low quality? I walked into my room and was confronted with a raggedy college dorm room type refrig sitting on the floor in the middle of my room. Oh don't get me wrong they did have another refrig that was nice and sitting inside a cabinet but that was filled with drinks that you had to pay for. When I saw that old refrig on the floor I could believe my eyes. It must be the light in the room I thought. So I decided to open the drapes to get a better look at this miniature monstrosity of a cooler. Unfortunately, my windows open to two huge walls that came within a couple feet of my window, leaving just a sliver of opening to look out beyond. Overall the room was plain and ordinary. The bathroom looked like they started to update but ran out of money to redo the shower. The coffin sized shower still had old dated tiles and the shower fixtures were probably the ones that were installed when the place was first built. Don't get me wrong, I'm not say antique, I'm saying just plain old. Service was no better. I got to say the woman that checked me out was nice and pleasant enough but the man that checked me in barely gave me the time of day. In fact , he didn't tell me anything useful except the elevator was around the corner. No mention of which room he decided to put me in nor did he tell me about any of the amenities of the hotel: gym, pool, and even how to access the wireless. He just check my id and gave me my key. The valet was no better. The folks that greeted me in the front and took my car were pleasant but the man who worked the valet office downstairs must have been the brother of the man at the front desk. When I handed him my valet ticket, he took the ticket without a word, scanned the ticket, then place the ticket on the counter and still without a word went back to doing whatever he was doing. I stood there wondering if he was finished with me and where I was suppose to go to wait for my car. After a few awkward moments I asked if he was done and was I supposed to wait outside for my car. He just looked up and gesture for me to wait outside. At $26/day plus tips and this is the service I get for parking my car in a hotel with dumpy rooms!?

My booking process was a bit complicated getting into the room block for an event. The Fairmont customer service reps I worked with on multiple occasions went above and beyond to find solutions and ensure I received the best price. The stay itself was great - nice touches around the hotel from the fruit infused water, in-room dining, and cold towels at the gym. Only reason I give the stay a 9 rather than a 10 was because I had booked a king bed room but ended up having to stay in a double bed room. Normally I understand when this happens, but I had just been on the call with a hotel rep 2 days prior regarding my reservation and had confirmed I would still be in a king room. So having just confirmed that made it a bit disappointing. However, when I brought that up at check in, the front desk rep at check-in offered me a $30 dining credit for the inconvenience which was a nice touch. Overall great stay and service.
