It doesn't get any better looking out from the fire pit on the bay with clear views of Golden Gate and Alcatraz. The breakfast is perfect to start your adventure for the day. The staff and drivers are very accommodating. The surround sound stereo in the master bedroom makes leaving hard.

« It's a time-share apartment hotel with few staff and facilities; comfortable and "homely" but a lot needs fixing »

The problem with the hotel is that it’s not really a hotel. It’s really a time-share building with a mix of two-bedroom and three-bedroom apartments trying to act like a hotel. So there’s an owner’s corporation and, as the maintenance guy explained to me on the fourth time we saw him on our four-day stay, the owners have approval over all repairs and this means work can take months or even years to be approved. As an example, we arrived to find only half the window blinds in our room were installed. So in our bedroom, which looked into the neighbouring apartment building, there were two tall windows and only one had a blind. Which meant we either had to leave the blackout curtain closed all day or else open it to let in some light and just accept that we needed to exchange awkward glances with the neighbours. Right next door, in the living room, there was the exact same scenario. I asked for the blinds to be reinstalled which they did, but it took them two days, and then the one in the living room kept falling out. It fell out and was reinstalled twice and this happened right up until our last night in the room. Our bed head, which was made of some sort of fake leather, had mostly worn away where the pillows rest against it. The maintenance guy told me they finally had approval to fix this after waiting a long time and that the replacement would start next month. He said the approval to replace the blinds was also recently received and that work would start next year in January but that the owners hadn’t yet approved the actual product that they would use so he wasn’t optimistic that the replacement program would start in time. Housekeeping wasn’t good either. They told us to load the dishwasher and leave the rest to them. Then they ignored the dishwasher and left it for us to load, wash and unload it. Happy to do that - but just tell us the right thing and stick with that. There were four of us in the room and there were four napkins but when we ate some food at the table and used four napkins, they replaced them with three napkins the next day and that’s how it stayed for the remainder of our stay, despite the fact that I reported it twice. I know it’s just napkins but the fact that it couldn’t be fixed is emblematic of the management chaos that exists. They’ve paired back the traditional hotel services just to valet parking attendants and concierges (which they call butlers, but they don’t really know what butlers do) who try to do everything else. Their “lounge” served a cocktail hour consisting of four types of cheeses and crackers with cheap wine from 5pm to 6pm only and their breakfast was simple cereal and yoghurt each morning without proper coffee. I thought the concierges/butlers were trying hard to battle understaffing and a problematic building and, while they were very friendly in that American way, they were ultimately unsuccessful in making it work like a hotel and it’s nowhere near good enough for US$1,200 per night, even given that San Francisco is an expensive city.

The accommodations and the hotel are lovely and the location is unbeatable. The amenities are very nice including the deck and the breakfast. We were on the second floor and our view was a little blocked by the roof of the building in front, so we were disappointed in that. I think for your second floor accomodations the pricing should be changed to accommodate. For the price we paid I had expected a higher floor with unblocked views. I don't know if I would pay the same rate for this same room again.

The 2-bedroom apartment was great. Only complaint there - the dryer did not work properly. Staff were great. Breakfast was the saddest spread I've ever seen. We had a better breakfast at the 3-star inn in Milpitas where we stayed earlier. I was looking forward to at least some hot food given that the Fairmont is supposedly a luxury hotel. Turns out the kitchen there does not even have a stove! Milk and cereal, toast and jam, and cold boiled eggs.

« Excellent experience »

This was a multi-generational family stay involving three families with four adult children and five grandchildren ranging in age from 7 to 17. Our three residences were very comfortable and had a beautiful view of the bay. The concierge service was excellent with a special nod to Alex Turley who assisted me in planning various aspects of our stay (restaurants, sightseeing, car service, etc.). The continental breakfast was excellent. And the entire staff was very friendly and accomodating.
