« Short stay in Ottawa »

As usual it was perfect throughout the short stay; there were no surprises. This hotel is impressive but unassuming and the staff like Gordon at the entrance and Guy the bellhop always make you feel at home. Having loyal and dedicated staff which a repeat customer gets to recognize makes it a great experience. Having not traveled as much in the last 18 months due to wife’s battle with cancer which she lost in December has taken away my Platinum status but I am still treated the same way (except for the chocolates I used to get for many years). Notwithstanding this, with my wife’s departure, I will now be staying more often in the future and look forward to earning my Playinum status back (or whatever Accor now calls this level). I wish the renovations on the Gold floor had not increased prices as much for regular customers or some upgrades would allow to access that floor. As a regular guest of the Gold floor over many years I greatly appreciated the special attention given by Catherine and her team.

Had I known about the lack of parking garage on site prior to booking with a non-refundable rate, I would have booked elsewhere. Repeated problems linking the two nights of separate bookings.

« Landmark location, not landmark experience »

Dissapointing. The decision to renovate while remaining open is an inevitable compromise. Housekeeping was lax - on arrival after an 8 hour drive I went to take a shower and saw hair stuck to the shower wall from a previous guest at eye level. That night turn down was a pile of towels left on a dresser and the curtains left open - we could not figure out the blinds and so slept with curtains open. Although the duty manager on a Sunday (Irish from Boston) was a standout star the valet despite being notified were a solid 40 mins late getting our car - we drove from NYC at Easter near the anniversary of my wife's mother passing and were made late for the church service by the priest who officiated at the funeral - all this after an 8 hour drive from New York to be there. Overall, less than ideal. Wi-Fi in the property is very disjointed (probably because of the solid stone bones of the structure) and requires work to improve coverage. Main lobby feels like a railway station lounge and lacks warmth (literally - not even a fake fireplace), the ante-room to the side is dark, dingy and uninviting.

Honestly, this was such a disappointment compared to my stay at Chateau Frontenac in February. There was never anyone available in the gold lounge area (they were always in the back behind closed doors), you had to look for everything (napkins/cutlery are in a bottom drawer in the afternoons - how on earth would anyone know that) no knife to cut the bread in the evenings, and no one to ask. this was the theme over and over again.. front desk put two small children next to our room, even though we were on a romantic birthday trip. I advised the hotel that my boyfriend was celebrating a birthday, they left a card and dessert for me instead. We were very disappointed.
