« A terrible customer service »

This is the first time in my life when I feel like writting a complaint to a hotel. My husband and I travel worldwide. We always choose premium properties around the world and 99 percent of the time we get an outstanding service. Of course on our most recent trip to New York, we wanted to stay at the legendary Plaza Hotel. I’m sorry to say that despite your reputation, The Plaza has a terrible customer service. The property itself is amazing and we loved it, but in the end the service made us feel ripped off as we left. We spent over $ 10,000 for less than a week’s stay in a Carnegie Suite not only to be able to live in a beautiful room but also to get the proper service that we have experienced at many other premiere properties around the globe. That’s the list of things we found not acceptable : 1. My husband wanted to sit in the lobby bar at 2pm on a Monday. The hostess named Colleen said that they don't provide any service there- despite the room being half full with eating or just sitting customers. This is already ridiculous but my husband asked if at least he can sit there to work and not order food- in the lobby of the hotel we were staying at. She said no, but that he can go to sit upstairs in the Rose bar. A few minutes later we noticed another woman being seated at the exactly same table he pointed out as empty. I don't remember when we felt so unwelcome and frankly weird. We ended up going for the lunch to the Pierre across the street because of how suddenly uncomfortable we were after already being a guest with you for 5 days. 2. I gave our butler my shoes for polishing service- as a note in the room indicated we should do. He brought it back and my Gucci shoes had black paste all over them including the gold elements. I mean all the gold elements came back black, so I called him again to fix it. He said he will try to clean it, if not they will have to send it for special cleaning. A full day later (Saturday) I got a call from the hotel saying that my shoes came back because they didnt know what's wrong with them even though we clearly explained to the butler. After I explained it again to the women on the phone she said "Oh no, right I can see that. Unfortunately the earliest we can send your shoes to be repaired is on Monday” After all it ended up ok, but no one even apologized to me for that. I just didn't have my shoes from Friday until Monday- all over a simple shine request. 3. We gave some clothes for dry cleaning/ironing. Some of the them were ready in few hours and part of it was supossed to be delivered to the room by 10 am. It was delivered around 4-5 pm. One pair of trousers came with a new crease that was never meant to be there. Of course we had to send it back to repair it. When you are dealing with high end items you can not make those kind of mistakes. 4. Once when we were sitting in the upstairs lobby we wanted order some tea and we were told that you don't serve any warm drinks there. If we want we can go downstairs order tea and bring it upstairs. We asked for a manger to try to resolve this simple request who told us the same thing: no tea in the Rose Bar but if we moved down to the lobby in eyesight distance we could order it. At a hotel on this level I would expect that someone can do it for a hotel guest. Its literally 30 feet away. 5. When I called our “24 hours at your service” butler for a small plate or other little things he was telling me to call house keeping. I would suppose that he is there to help guests and I have no idea why he wouldn't provide these most basic for us - or make the call himself- except for laundry and cleaning the shoes… both services which were disasters as noted above. 6. The cleaning people would always leave dishes or empty glasses in the room with a note "Call housekeeping for collecting your dishes” I never experienced anything like that. 7. For so many mistakes with my shoes or trousers etc normally a hotel will send us some apology like a bottle of wine etc. No one we dealt with during our stay was really helpful or nice the way we are used to. It felt like employees don't communicate or collaborate together to deliver a good service which is the basic expected seamless experience at all luxury properties. It all created kind of anger in us, that leaving the door of your property we felt ripped off. We will be back in NYC again many times but can’t see how we can justify staying at the Plaza or recommending it to anyone on our network. No one who is accustomed to other properties at this level would tolerate this level of service. You’ve earned a very vocal and internationally connected couple who, as of this moment, will pass along a highly negative experience and recommendation to stay away from The Plaza at this point.

« Home Alone Experience »

We did the Home Alone experience, the ice cream was melting in the room when we arrived, the person who is suppose to serve it while we are in bed, was not there, it was not as its shown in the ads. Check in was great, I carried in my own bags 2 suit cases, carry on and back pack, half way in the lobby in front of the check in counter a bell man grabbed it from me....i carried it up the steps myself the hard work was already done. In the lobby area there is a dining area, i sat for 20 mins before I finally got someone to ask me what my wife and I wanted to eat, I was looking at the servers a few times, flagged them, they said they were coming, but it looked like they were not doing much, people came and left.

My husband and I celebrated not only his birthday but also mother's day, from the moment we were picked up from the airport to checking in and oh by the way the concierge was so extremely helpful with planning weeks ahead. They helped to create ie, meals, activities etc soo fabulous Go James!! and Juliet!!!

They did not wake me up some how the front desk might manager it was a lady what kind but she never called my to wake me up I arrived 2 am and wanted and needed to wake up to go to airport at 4 .30 am and somehow I new I need to rely on for t desk and not my iPhone and I was not waken up . Another incident was That the first night I left an came back at 6 pm somehow the morning shift simply did not manage to clean my room and at 6.50 pm when the afternoon shift knocked to come in the make my rooms turnover poor lady I was telling he r why she did not make my room all day and she simply said I don’t know I barely came in the afternoon shift but she kindly cleaned my howl room. And the. Of course did my proper turnover .

« Not what I expected »

Upon arrival with luggage, I had to go and find someone to help me. Nobody offered to help with bags. The doorman was extremely rude and annoyed by my request. Leaving the hotel, it was different and we encounter very helpful and friendly doorman and bell hop. upon arrival, most hotels give you an introduction to their services but not here. We did not know what restaurants were available for breakfast so we did not use any. I have been in hundreds of hotels all over the world and this is the first time I had to pay for internet services.

« NYC'S FINEST!! »

From the moment you check in you feel like a VIP! From the front desk, to the Butler and Guest services we did not have to ask twice for anything!! The hotel is a perfect place to get away for the weekend, business or a vacation. The weather was not so nice the weekend we stayed but not to worry...The lobby bar (Bartender Laura made us feel like we were friends forever), Palm Court and the area shops were perfect! We opted for a special room and booked a Penthouse two story suite online with Fairmont and had an amazing room with the feel of living in a NYC brownstone. The heated bathroom floor was a fabulous finishing touch!

« No regrets! »

I planned a very special Mother’s Day weekend in NYC with my daughter who left her 3 young children to spend the weekend with her mother’ Me! I could not afford all 3 nights stay but I made sure we had at least 1 night at the Plaza. The Plaza did not let me down. We were welcomed with champagne, chocolate dipped strawberries and a room upgrade! We had afternoon tea in a Palm Court and a carriage ride in Central Park! What a magical experience! The staff were all wonderful! Especially David the concierge! I left the city with no regrets that we experienced the city to the max! Met museum, 911 Memorial, Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, Times Square, Central Park carriage ride, Chinatown, Bryant Park, Today show and NBC studio tour, food truck hot dogs and ice cream, hop on hop off, subway, rooftop dining, lots of walking, and so much more!

« Great front desk and maid staff but tired facilities »

Found that location , front desk , reservations , housekeeping staff exceptional Arrived at 1am zero help with luggage. The lobby restaurant was pretty empty at 10a but took 10 to 15 mins to be seated and have ordered taken. Coffee! Arrived then after another 20 mins. Just FYI total bill was north of $325 as also had champagne after crossaint and coffee Rooms were very dark , and facilities very dated and not clean including restrooms in public areas.

Out stay was very nice. We were; however, surprised to hear that the hotel had been closed prior to our stay. We arrived on May 5 and were told that was the first day it was re-open. I would have expected that someone from Fairmont or The Plaza would have contacted us in advance to discuss alternatives, if needed. We were coming to The Plaza from Milwaukee for a special birthday celebration. If the hotel would not have been open or the staff still on strike, this would have greatly impacted our celebration. We were also unhappy that the hours for the upstairs bar area were limited. Not as shown on the website. But finally, we had great service from our butler and Fhorid in the upstairs bar.

« Mostly Great, and Very Nice »

Room was excellent (suite overlooking 57th), Service was Mostly Over the Top, including the Concierge, and most of the waiters/waitresses. One small complaint was the apparent over-abundance of "Reserved" and Unavailable tables in the Champagne Bar - and no one ever sat in them - seemed like staff was catering to someone "more important". This only happened once, but it was very frustrating as we were trying to entertain some guests and couldn't find a place to sit and have a drink.

« Not what i expected at the Plaza or a Fairmont »

I wanted to share that our stay was less than expected this weekend. I have not been at the Plaza New York since 2004 and was really looking forward to our stay this weekend. Arriving on Friday morning it was wonderful that your staff could accommodate us for an early check in, but the feeling at check in could have been the same as a Comfort Inn. The front desk seemed not 100% present, no welcoming hello and the hotel felt like a ghost town. We asked the front desk to make change so we could tip the bellman, and they asked us to come back as they had no cash on hand. When we did come back 30 minutes later it was still an issue to make change for a $20. We found this experience odd. Typically as a President’s Club member we have exercise gear in room for use. Nothing was provided till day 2, even though it was requested before check in last week. Hotel dining and bar service was not an option and a major disappointment as we usually love breakfast in room our first morning with the paper, and enjoy a night cap cocktail. Neither of which we had a chance to experience. There was a note and fruit provided in room from the service director on day 2, but the fruit was not ripe enough to eat. We realize now that there was some major labor disputes happening on premise, that affected service, but we were not even notified until less than 24 hours before we checked in (after 5pm pst time). Had we known there was major issues, we would have moved to another hotel, as the lack of service and luxury was apparent during our weekend stay. We did not feel as though there was even a simply hello when entering the hotel, nor extra special guest amenities or luxurious accommodations provided, as one would expect at a Fairmont hotel. Moreover we were disappointed that no one even made an attempt to check on us as guests, possibly offering a room upgrade for the inconvenience, a complimentary cocktail once the bar service was in order, or gesture when checking out. It definitely has made us think twice about coming back to this hotel on our next visit to New York. I felt it was only fair to share our thoughts as we were disappointed guests leaving what once was one of the greatest hotels in New York.

« I checked out after 1 night because the hotel seemed disorganized »

I am a Fairmont Gold Member and also have stayed several times at the Plaza in the last 2 years. I’ve had lovely upgrades and great services. This past experience, my sister and I were placed in a VERY basic room and then, after requesting another room were placed in a better but not good room. We went down to the Diningroom and, although our server was doing her best (she was alone in the room) we waited 40 minutes to get a drink and another 1/2 hour for her to return to tell us that you didn’t have that wine choice after all. Things went downhill from there so we checked out the next morning and stayed at The Pierre for the remainder of the 3 days.

Dear Sirs, I had booked 6 nights at Plaza Hotel to stay with my wife as it was our 25 years wedding anniversary. Due to the reasons I am sure you know, this experience was really disappointing. NO SERVICE at all, NO cleaning our suite because "they told us they could not use Even the vacuum cleaner". NO restaurant , NO bar opened, so after 3 nights we asked to be moved to Four Seasons . The only "reimbursemnt " we got was 1 night free at Four Seasons. Is this the "standard" service at Fairmont Hotels ? Did I fly from Dubai -via Italy to stay at THE PLAZA and got 1 voucher for a free breakfast in a very poor location outside the hotel ? Did I fly to NY for staying at THE PLAZA and after 3 days I had to re-pack my luggages ? Therefore I leave it up to you any kind of reimbursement , if FAIRMONT Co. really takes care about their Customers. The Plaza is every bit an American icon as the “purple mountain majesties” and “the amber waves of grain.” The unparalleled service, the luxurious accommodations, and the patina of a more gracious age create for any visitor a memorable experience. Although challenged by a labor dispute not of the Plaza’s doing, the staff never missed a beat. Especially thoughtful was the advance communication advising us of the situation and the genuine effort to minimize its impact on the guests. This is what customer service is all about and what we have come to expect of the Fairmont brand.
