« Service was bad »

My husband and I decided to stay in Chicago for the weekend to celebrate my birthday. We elected the Fairmont Gold experience, but the service was very disappointing. Breakfast was supposed to serve till 11am on the weekend, it was 10:30 and I saw the bowl of blackberries were emptied and asked the waitress to refill the bowl (there were two, I asked the younger lady), she told me breakfast is ending soon so she would rather not do that. I then asked if she could just get a small plate of the blackberries from the kitchen for me, she REFUSED again, stating the same reason, because breakfast is going to be over soon! Her service and attitude to the guest is not what I would expect from the Fairmont Gold experience. It is 30 mins till breakfast is over, I don’t understand why she can’t help a guest with who is supppsed to receive good service because this is the Fairmont. For a moment, I thought I was staying at a Holiday Inn instead of Fairmont with her poor attitude. As for the house keeping service, it was bad too. Used glasses that are clearly empty were not removed for days. When I happened to be in the room when the house keeping lady and for turndown service, I asked the lady if she could put a plastic bag before she filled in the ice, her answer is No because the minibar people forgot to put it in, so she can’t do it. Seriously? She could at least offered to come back and get me the plastic bag, and not told me that’s not her problem and that’s it. Overall, the experience with Fairmont was disappointing, and I would never recommend the Fairmont Gold experience to any friends as the extra money didn’t give me better service. I stayed at the Gwen last year, and the service was a lot better.

« Great hotel, nothing included »

Our room rate was really high, so we expected at least a bottle of water to be complimentary, let alone breakfast. Service was also really slow, I had to call 4 times for a shower cap and it took them about an hour to finally deliver it. The room was comfortable.

« Pleasant Hotel with good staff »

The rooms were beautiful and spacious. The service was good. My only complaint is that the safe in my room did not work, and after trying several times with the staff to first get it unlocked, and then try to get the battery replaced, I realized that the unit itself was probably just defective and they did not want to admit it. So, they were helpful in responsive in one sense, but there appears to be an equipment issue on the other. Beside this, my stay was quite good. The beds are very comfortable.

« Short visit to Chicago, trying a different hotel - south of the Chicago River. »

We arrived late on Wednesday 30 May because of being rerouted when travelling from the UK. We were not sure whether check in took place in the lobby or in the 15th floor Lounge [Royal York in Toronto is a lounge check in]. However, the lobby check in was quick and our 14th floor room was excellent and thr housekeeping standards were exemplary. We enjoyed the Lounge where the staff were attentive and always helpful. THe hotel was conveniently situated for lakeside and river walks, State street area shops, and the Parks. We cannot really comment on the other facilities as the only other we used was the Lobby bar. WE would recommend this hotel both for its situation and for the service.

« really good but not great »

I checked in on-line and got an email as to how to pick up my keycard in the Gold club only to have the porter take the bags thus necessitating a stop at the front desk to check in so that the bags could be delivered to the correct room The fitness room is too small and most of the aerobic machines are not very high tech or out of date. It doesn't surpass what one can currently can get at most hotels. Even Hyatt Place has better machines even if not as big of an fitness room. The Gold club and our "personal concierge" were really strong. This exceeds the Marriott, SPG, and typical Ritz Carlton clubs. Your employee Mugi deserves kudos-he was very attentive and very pleasant to work with

« Fantastic! Even remembered my allergies and got an awesome foam pillow! »

It was pretty seemless from beginning to end. We valeted the car and dropped off our bikes. I was worried about the system for storing bikes but it was great! We stored our bikes briefly again after the ride while we showered and got ready to check out. I would definitely return!

« General experience was ok but bathroom maintenance was lacking »

I liked the location and front desk staff. Room furniture etc was looking old and could stand to be updated. My main complaint was cleanliness of the bathroom. If you are going to have stone showers with lots of grout lines you have to understand black mold will grow on it unless you are diligent with the cleaning. There was multiple patches of mildew/mold in the shower. Also crusty deposits around the faucets on the sink. And one episode when the housekeeper walked in on me when I was naked (didn’t knock). I’ve stayed in some favulous Fairmonts (Banff etc) and this location doesn’t hold up the brand.

« Pampered Practicality »

My stay was wonderful - I had everything I needed to deal with my business tasks, and relax and have fun in Chicago. The staff were all cheerful and helpful, without exception. The room attendants were very respectful of my schedule. My one room service meal was delicious, and the restaurant in the lobby served tasty food. My room had a partial lake view, and watching the fireworks over the lake one night was beautiful.

The room was spacious and clean. Service was very good. I may have left a polo shirt in our room. We checked out of 1402 this past Sunday. If by some chance someone in housekeeping found it, I would pay for shipping or pick up 6/27 when I'll be back in Chicago.
