« Cold »

Room cold, towels small and thin. Room 212 bathroom towel rail doesn't work, doesn't appear to have been tested since 2016.

« Adequate Facilities, but poor customer management and services »

The main gates are not working and caused much confusion navigating in the dark, which other guests too complained about. Room service was poorly presented with no food covering other than tin foil. The check-in process was complicated and confusing they rarely answer the phone and have many under trained staff.

« Special Occasion Break without the 'Special' »

We booked with break as a child-free birthday treat and we're left feeling pretty unsatisfied. Our room was smaller than we were expecting but comfortable. We had a problem finding the room as we arrived around 7pm and the car park and outside areas are very poorly lit and the stairways were hard to find. We were seated promptly for dinner and the food was excellent although we waited on two separate occasions for drinks orders, once for 20 minutes and again for 15 minutes, with other tables being served their drinks almost immediately after ordering. My husband went and ordered at the bar in the end. There was also a mix up with our spa booking. I had received a confirmation of our treatment bookings from you for 7th but you had them for the 6th, luckily you were able to fit us in. Our treatments were great and both therapists were excellent. Overall we didn't enjoy ourselves but the negative aspects did overshadow our stay a little.

« Lovely grounds, but dated and small rooms for the price »

The main building looks beautiful with surrounding grounds to match, however rooms are dated and small. Especially standard, we had to pay for an upgrade after spending £350 with Virgin for a murder mystery experience. We went from standard to privileged and it was only an extra £20. This room was ok and I would expect this to be minimum for the price charge. The standard rooms were detached from the rest, so you will need to walk outside to get your room each time. You will also need to use a side fire exit door to get a closer journey to main bar. If staying I would recommend atleast a privilege room. Our stay was good, I'm not sure if it is the hotel or Virgin who have over charged us here, Hence why I am a bit critical on my review. Personally I think the standard Double should be £80 and the privilege £100 a night. This is for 2 people sharing. Can't compare the rest.

« Disappointing. The hotel interiors and exteriors need a lot of attention »

We were not impressed with the hotel at all. Very poor bar food service, and the breakfast was well below standard.

« Fantastic »

We had a fantastic stay but we did have one issue and that was we tried three occasions to visit your restaurant and was told 1st time it was closed at 8.30pm and on the two other occasions no matter what time we tried to book it was full where we had to eat in your bar area so we could see your restaurant and there was tables empty all night this definitely let you down

« Less than perfect »

No where near as luxurious as expected. The bedrooms were poor and tired (or patched up poorly). Fitting broken or missing. Grounds stunning. The hall was stunning but the bit where we stayed was a real let down. Staff mainly very young and inexperienced. Phones not answered. Never even looked at the spa and treatments as the prices were ridiculous and the reviews so poor. Food average. Not an experience just eating.

« birthday celebration »

We had a birthday celebration for 2 of the party with 12 in total. whilst on arrival we were disappointed we had not been accommodated in the Hall( where we had been twice before) the friendliness and helpfulness of the staff, more than made up for any disappointment. Ian the restaurant manager went out of his way to ensure we had a quiet area for a very special celebration , which would have been impossible in a busy restaurant setting. All the restaurant staff were very welcoming and accomodating especially Marine. Jamie the Spa manager also helped sort out the Spa arrangements which kept changing, and overall it made a special weekend one that will remain long in the family memory , and we cannot thank you all enough.

« Useful stopover but could be so much more! »

This was a complimentary stay after a poor experience. Waited 10 mins to check in - one staff member and rather over familiar! Although room says no smoking , it smelt strongly of cigarettes. When I needed to do my make up next morning, lamp on table didn't work, so I had to go back and forward to big mirror and bathroom.

« A well deserved long awaited weekend away »

We have stayed at the Walton Hotel before and returned as we had a good time on our previous visit. Generally it was a good visit, the room was clean and we had a patio room allotted to us as requested. A few things that could have been better; 1. On arriving at the main entrance as directed by the post code on a sat nav, we found the entrance locked for maintenance, there was a plastic wallet with the instructions to please take a map for alternative entrance. There were no maps. Could this not have been sent with the booking confirmation or the alternative post code sent explaining the need for this ? We arrived in the evening as you are aware it is extremely dark with little light pollution which made finding our way somewhat harder and could have been completely avoided. 2. Towels were mismatched (some cream some white) and looking beyond their best to say the least (not something I would expect at a 4 star hotel. 3. The exterior of the hotel was looking very tired poor woodwork broken windows and generally in need of some TLC. 4. Net curtains in our room were very dirty/ stained. 5. Patio doors were ill fitting stuck when trying to open them. 6. We had a room with an adjoining door to the next room (assuming you offer this as an option) which didn't offer much privacy as we could hear everything the next room were saying. 7. Previously the orangery dinning room was somewhat more welcoming, clear walk ways between tables and linen table clothes and napkins (even at breakfast), now it seems crowded and no defined walk through meaning you are almost squeezing past fellow diners to enter/exit. No table cloths and paper serviettes. I wouldn't say it ruined our weekend but things could have been slightly better and more what we expected, having stayed here previously with somewhat higher standards than now, which made the whole experience slightly more comfortable. All staff were friendly and very helpful and a credit to the hotel.

« Far below what we were expecting when staying at a 4 star hotel. »

Key to room did not work each night of stay. Food selection form main menu was poor especially for a non meat eater. Fish and chips was more batter than fish plus tasteless. Second night I had the non meat burger it was like eating wood and the seasoning was far too spicy. Second day the room had not been serviced as dirty mugs left, no top up of teat or coffee, no milk, no spoons and the used toilet roll was not replaced. Finally the plastic cups for water (both of them) split open trying to get the out of the plastic covers. Towels were rough to the touch. Overall not good!! The room looked nothing like the photograph on your web site the window was dirty and the light shades had water damage. Breakfast was not good the scrambled eggs were from a micro waved and not made fresh. The bread for toasting was so thin in that when you applied butter the slice went soggy. When you enter the restaurant for breakfast you are asked to find your own table on our second day all were taken except two and one of these tables had a chair with brown stains on the seat. This should have been removed by the staff. Even though all the tables were taken or used your guests were still told to find their own table which I considered was poor service. Signage was poor to the main entrance and we ended coming in on the ground floor below reception. I have to use crutches which caused sum problems plus I had to move the car to the Disabled car parking after checking in. It was our 45th Wedding anniversary on that Saturday so needless to say the service that we received, the menu that we could choose from, the room service situation marred the weekend for us.

« Reasonable experience »

Courtyard accommodation was nice but the pool was overheated, and could not stay in for long. Not very impressed with vegetarian evening meal options. Had complications in rearranging booking, and overall a little disappointed unfortunately.

Lovely stay to celebrate my 17th birthday with my boyfriend. All staff were lovely expecially the restaurant staff who let us change our dinner booking twice after not being ready!! The food was amazing especially the steak. The room was very nice and the bed was very comfy. Would recommend to friends and will definitely stay again in the future!!

« Great hotel, friendly staff and lovely food the hotel was in a wonderful setting. »

From the moment you turn off the country lane and travel along the winding driveway that leads to the hotel you start to think to yourself, " umh this looks very nice " and we were not disappointed. The countryside setting is marvellous and the hotel its self excellent. The staff were all friendly and we thought the food was very good, breakfast was a treat everything you could have wished for. We both enjoyed the leisure facilities which were all very clean and tidy and the presence of a real BBC film crew filming on site was exciting even though we had no idea what they were filming. The only criticism we had were the pillows on the bed they were lacking in substance a little thin which did,nt give enough support to the head and neck. Overall a great couple of days and we would have no hesitation recommending this hotel to anyone, we are looking forward to our next visit and we intend to bring our friends with us.
