« Not the best hotel I’ve stayed in but by far not the worst, excellent value for money »

Room was ready when we got to hotel and service was good. The young barman Henry delivered great customer service and even helped us rearrange some tables to suit our group.

Rooms desperatly need updating bathroom tiles cracked and buldging bath panel in bad condition freezing cold half a toilet roll in bathroom went to reception and was given half a toilet roll from there noise from neighbours untill 3.30 in the morning doors banging throughout the night and breakfast food was cold so no did not enjoy our stay and had to journey back to Birmingham exhausted

We attended for an organised Car club New Years Dinner and stayed on Saturday night. Everything went smoothly. Food, staff, accommodation were excellent. Faultless and great value.

We were staying for a wedding and when we originally tried to book the 2 nights together were told it was not possible and then booked the first night via internet. On check in we were not told where any facilities were or what was available. Second day our key card was blocked so when we arrived back at hotel between church service and reception we then had to wait while all the other guests were being checked in from the wedding party to sort this out, not even an apology! I have worked in tourism industry for many years and I felt that reception was below standard. The bar staff were all friendly and helpful and was nice to see a manager who seemed very hands on sorting various issues. The room we had was very basic but was clean although you could hear noise from adjoining rooms and the main corridor causing a lack of sleep. We did enjoy our stay but lots of room for improvement.

Clean but dated room, provided with extra heater. Not too much disturbance from near-by busy road. Breakfast disappointing- buffet-style not freshly cooked.

« Helpful staff, hotel needs updating »

We were not informed on booking that there was a large function taking place at the hotel. The bar area was unavailable to use as this group took over the whole area and the restaurant was closed. There were children running up and down the corridors disturbing our sleep until gone 2am. Having said this the manager on duty did his best to accommodate us and personally arranged for food and drinks to be served to us in the breakfast area. During our meal we were constantly disturbed by the unruly behaviour of the guests at the private function. The manager did his best in a difficult situation but if we hadn't paid up front for the room we would have left and gone elsewhere. The food served was very good as was the breakfast. The room was tired and not 4 star in our opinion. The leisure centre we did not use as it was being used by the private function and was noisy. Overall it wasn't a good experience and we would not return.

With children running through the corridors and bouncing tennis balls off the walls, I felt the hotel could’ve done more to ensure that guests who want to sleep could have done so. Reporting this was not a particularly successful move, as no staff seemed capable of making sure parents were at least somewhat controlling their children.

« Satisfied considering the cost of the room with points, but overall a very tired looking hotel - not 4 star. »

Tired furniture in room - needs a some maintenance, but clean and functional - more than enough space. But the room was right at the back of the hotel through an annoying mazre of corridors that all looked the same. Breakfast buffet was ok but perhaps not worth £10

Upon arrival the two people at the front desk were having some sort of spat, the young girl then proceeded to tell me why her work colleague was annoying her. After attempting to check me in and not being able to, her colleague had to instead. I probably said and respelled my surname to the both of them over 5 times. I was staying in a room on the ground floor, accessed by walking through the dining room. Two further staff in there were having a small argument. The room was incredibly tired, dated and looked unclean at first glance because of marks on the walls and carpet. The room was far too hot, having left the radiator on whilst I was away from the room. Additionally, the quite obtrusive fan left in the room did not work either. I have stayed in Mercure hotels before and I don't believe this stay was indicative of previous occasions.

« Swamped by functions »

I was disappointed that both the restaurant and the function marquee were being used for functions both nights. It meant that my only choice was to eat in the bar which was overcrowded at times throughout the night by the guests from the function in the marquee. Because the restaurant was being set up for functions, it was unclear whether lunch was being served at all, so I had to go over to the garage across the road to buy something for lunch, and eat it with a tea-spoon, as that was the only cutlery available in the rooms. It didn't help that I was woken up at 2am both nights. The first by one of the ladies in the room next door, who was so drunk she fell all the way along the corridor, and in her room until she fell asleep. The second, by a fire alarm which was set off and quickly silenced. As there was no communication round the rooms, I felt uncomfortable enough to have to get dressed and make my way to reception to check that it was a false alarm and that nobody had evacuated. As I had express check-out, the receptionists didn't even ask me how my stay was before moving onto doing something else.

Hotel clearly in need of a refurbishment. Carpets worn and dirty looking in bedroom. Shower was reduced to a trickle in the morning due to a power cut. Bed comfortable enough if a bit soft. Quite small too luckily only me in a double.
