I have stayed in Sofitel hotels around the world over the last few months and was really looking forward to the stay in Amsterdam. The hotel is beautiful and the reception/public areas are every nice. The problem was noise. Our bedroom was located above the loading bay on a side street (Sint Agnietenstraat). On Saturday morning at 530am we were woken up by a truck pulling up and then by 2 hours of unloading. The noise was incredible. We asked at the front desk whether the same thing would happen the next morning and were assured that they would look into it and get back to us but there was no follow up. At 530am on Sunday morning the same thing happened. Being tired and jet lagged and looking forward to sleeping in on the weekend of an anniversary trip this noise ruined the holiday. I'm also sad to say that the bar service was haphazard and the lunch in the Bistro was very underwhelming. The vegetarian curry was inedible -- a watery, flavourless mess -- and the fish and chips soggy and unremarkable in every way. It is very hard to believe that the food we ate came from the same kitchen as a Michelin star restaurant. Moreover the ambience was ruined while someone ran a vacuum cleaner for 30 minutes through the bar and restaurant area. A few other minor complaints -- the shower flooded the bathroom floor every time no matter what precautions we took and the gym/change room areas were very small and not well serviced/maintained. We so wanted to love this hotel, as we do the Sofitel St James in London, but the experience was very disappointing. Management should be upfront about the potential for noise in some rooms and should at least be responsive to concerns raised.

May I suggest that we also have rooms with a lovely view on our secluded garden, these rooms are more quiet most of the time. We will definitely locate you to one of these rooms if you decide to return to the hotel. We sincerely regret that the price-quality did not meet your expectations in our ‘Le Petit Bistro’ during lunch. We will share these comments with our Food & Beverage Manager and of course as well with our Chef de Cuisine to prevent this from happening again in the near future. « A Really Grand Stay »

We chose this hotel because we loved the Sofitel St James in London. We were not disappointed. This is an excellent hotel with wonderful staff. They are unfailingly helpful. The weather was awful during our stay so we spent more time about the hotel than we would have otherwise.

« Good hotel but certainly not great and systems / staff need sorting »

Am not sure how they got the 'Legend' tag as they are not much better than other Sofitel's. The rooms are nice but not great (we had a pillar in the middle of ours) and the bathrooms whilst modern are oddly designed and not overly practical i.e. shallow long basin which cannot be filled with water. The staff are friendly and the facilities nice but we felt like second class citizens at breakfast when the manager seated us and explained nothing (we had to ask for a menu and order our own coffee). Yet the table beside us got everything explained and order taken immediately! As a Platinum member, without me knowing, I was entitled to the butler service - but they didn't tell us about this until 24 hours after we arrived! After 26 hours of flying halfway around the world we were given a room above the bar - very noisy and not great for trying to get some rest. No room upgrade was available (have not had one with the last 3 Sofitel's in the last month we have stayed in - the loyalty programme seems pointless). One day they didn't service our room until I phoned at 4pm, but then apparently they did the turn down service at 5pm so when we got back at 9pm it did not look like anything had been done i.e. the lights were off and the curtains open - bizarre! Another night the turn down service was also forgotten and getting a newspaper only happened 50% of the time. They did provide some extras to make up for their errors but the errors and issues should not be occurring in the first place!

« Great location, service, staff & Hotel »

Selected this Hotel off the internet in Australia and could not have picked a more perfect location or Hotel for our relaxing 3 days in Amsterdam. The staff were great and we were treated as if we were the only guests in the Hotel. The Grand faces a canal so seeing all the sights is an easy canal ride or a pleasant stroll as everything is within an easy walk.

« sofitel grand visit »

comfortable and enjoyable. Place is spacious and quiet. Service is superb. staff are warm and friendly, and reception and concierge are very helpful and happy to assist and answer questions. Having a garden restaurant adds to the nice indoor spacious one. The rooms are elegant, and I had a canal view which added to the feel I am in Amsterdam.

« Brilliant stay »

We stayed for two nights in December. This was an excellent location to explore the city with everything within walking distance. As a platinum member we were lucky enough to be upgraded to a suite and enjoyed a number of treats from room service. We would also recommend the hot stones massage in the spa. Breakfast was also excellent

« Excellent service, as per expectations »

Numerous occassions we've visited The Grand and had dinner at Bridges, hence decided to stay over one weekend at The Grand, the service and accommodation perfect, as one would expect, I'd recommend to anyone coming to Amsterdam, to stay and enjoy the luxury services the hotel has to offer. Its the small thoughtful considerations the Grand fulfills, which make this a top Hotel.

« beautiful hotel with service issues »

beautiful well designed building. But front desk is staffed by very young people who do not know how to deliver 5 star service. dinner reservation was forgotten. a late night walk to the front desk for a nonfunctioning key was met with "are you sure it's not working?" .. check in time confirmed same day was not ready for 30 minutes as I waited in the lobby for room to be cleaned.. If the hotel wants to compete with other luxury properties, it has to have better staff.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Sofitel Legend Grand Hotel. On our 1st night there was an issue with the AC but we were promptly upgraded to the most amazing suite. All staff were extremely polite & professional but in particular the concierges were so helpful.

« Truly a "Grand Hotel" »

We stayed at The Grand right after disembarking from a riverboat that traveled the Rhine for seven days. We are so glad that we made our reservation here! The hotel staff were absolutely outstanding in every way. It is the first time we can remember that a front desk person brought us to our room and made us feel at home there! The hotel and the room were beautifully designed and very centrally located for our stay in Amsterdam. We only wish we could have stayed longer!

This is an excellent hotel in all respects. Location is central with short walks to all sites within Amsterdam. Staff at the hotel are very friendly and helpful, offering good advice on all attractions, transportation etc. I will definately return to this hotel in the future.

We have stayed at luxury hotels around the world, and this was one of the best experiences we have ever had. The suites were sublime, with more than adequate closet space, fantastic bathrooms, and the butler service was top notch. Kudos to Luis, our butler!

We had a wonderful stay at the Grand Amsterdam. Within easy walking distance of the main town square, the location was great. The hotel itself is very beautify and the staff was wonderful. They were friendly and helpful, and always followed through with requests. If we had any criticism it is that the closet space was a bit limited as was the bathroom storage space. Still, this is a wonderful property.

« Convenient Luxury »

The Sofitel is both luxurious and conveniently located in the Old Town area. Our canal view room was quite small but very comfortable with all mod cons and a well accoutred bathroom. The Bridges restaurant is split in two, a bistro with a limited but more than adequate menu and a top class restaurant that soecialises in fish. We used both and were very happy indeed. Full breakfast service is of the highest standard. But one of the best features of this hotel is its location, in a quiet area but conveniently located within walking disance of the Central Railway Station, 9 Streets shopping area and, a little longer stretch, the Rijksmuseuem and the Van Gogh museum. The only downside of Amsterdam is that the streets are really mucky!

« Spectacular hotel in a great location »

The Grand name says it all - it is a spectacular old building tastefully renovated. We had a beautiful view overlooking a canal. Short walking distance walk to shops, restaurants and the red light district. Breakfast was one of the best hotel breakfasts I have experienced however would want to be for the price you pay. Complimentary glass of champagne was a pleasant surprise however for the price for breakfast it should have come with a complimentary bottle! :) The staff were exceptional especially at checkin when a huge group arrived, we were taken aside to check-in at a quiet desk and didn't have to wait.
