« Not Just Teething Troubles! »

My wife and I have just returned from a two-day stay at the Victory House which has been open less than a week. It is very well located, but not very convenient for taxis, thank goodness it is in a short street, because there is no big sign, and were it not for a doorman, we might easily have walked past it. The staff are very helpful, if informally attired, but for me a doorman should look smart, not like someone with whom you are going to the pub. Having entered reception, the overall ambience is of a down-at-heel coffee bar, with the receptionist standing behind a small shelf equipped with a lap-top running rather amateurish software, but she was v welcoming and tried her best, getting off to a good start by upgrading us. There are still problem areas that I would not have expected a member of the Sofitel Group to experience, on our first day one of the lifts was already out of order, meaning that everyone had to use the only other. This included the hotel staff (particularly in the mornings), as there is no service lift, so getting to our room on the 2nd floor for the first time took at least 10 minutes, and then only after climbing the stairs. Another infuriatingly frustrating lift foible was that it often ignored a call even though it was going in the direction requested. The corridors and stairwell were nicely decorated, as was our room, but the room itself was not equipped for any length of stay. There was no space for normal furniture, so we were given a clothes rail with only six hangers, requiring garments to share, the only drawer space was in the bedside tables, and it amounted to about the size of a shoe box each. There was little or no additional shelf space, so we ended with clothes in piles on the window ledge! Had we wanted to stay for more than two nights, the storage would have been completely inadequate. The bathroom, although modern in style, was again a little too small, there was very little space for a reasonable quantity of cosmetics/toiletries. From a design angle the tiling was interesting, but using bevelled tiles for the horizontal shelf was a risky idea, as it is easy to try to stand something on them, and watch it fall over, a glass perfume bottle falling off the shelf could cause all kinds of problems. On a specific note, the sink in our room might have been chipped and repaired badly, and in a hotel that had been only open a week? On the second day of our stay the AirCon malfunctioned bigtime. When we returned at lunchtime, the room was like a sauna, no maintenance staff were available, but luckily there was a vacant room, to which we were moved quickly, the inconvenience being counterbalanced by another upgrade. Our new room was probably big enough, but there was no new drawer space. However there was more shelf room, with additionally a banquette across the end of the room. The hanging rail and bathroom were also a touch larger, but who signed off on the silicon round that sink? Sadly we were below someone who was an insomniac with big boots, patrolling around from 4:00 and the floor/covering was not sound insulated well enough. On checking out, the staff were all as helpful and friendly as they had been the whole stay, but the software was unable to print us our final account. We have since been sent a discount voucher for a future stay, but all we want when we book a hotel is a quiet life, so I doubt we will take up their kind offer.
