« feeling robbed »

I checked in around 6AM, and was expecting to pay a surcharge for the early checkin, but at the desk I was told it was an early checkin. When I had breakfast, I was asked to sign a paper since my one night's stay did not cover two breakfasts. I explained that I would check very early the next day, so I would only get one breakfast, and the woman agreed. When I checked out, less than 24 hurs after checkin, I was told I needed to pay for two full nights, and since there was no manager, too bad. I have stayed in your hotel many times before. Maybe for the last time. There are other options.

« Hotel needs to upgrade in order to be 5* »

1) Rooms - worn out (maybe re-painted but it shows it's run down) and bathroom doors dirty (sticky) 2) All around hotel visible signs of dirt (floors, ceiling in the dining room on 2nd floor) 3) waiters don't clean regularly from the table during the breakfast (at some point we had 4 dirty cups of coffee on out table) 4) Staff seems nice however will need a bit more training to get to the 5* level (European standard)

« Promised more than it delivered »

The hotel disappointed overall. I stayed 7 nights with a one night break in the middle to visit Iguazú Falls. The first room had aside sea view but was relatively nicer my second room with a full sea view. The second room was outdated, the toilet made noises, the windows didn’t open, and was more expensive. The roof top Restaurent was a major disappointment in decor, atmosphere and definitely food. The swimming pool was more like a tub, so small. Staff were friendly overall but the hotel was a major disappointment.

Staff was kind, friendly, and courteous. I enjoyed being able to use a hotel driver instead of a taxi. The room was a little dated but the service and food was exceptional. Special thanks to Miriam at the restaurant on 23. She was a delight!

« Good Stay in Sofitel, but no plans in coming back »

Room was good, although it looked a bit old - specially the bathroom. Breakfast was very good! The highlight of the stay. I had to ask in the reception for people to clean-up my room, although I was out of the room from 10am to 2pm, when I came back it was still no done. Staff was friendly as they allowed me to stay until 1pm, although check out time are earlier. I had a severe problem after staying, because 9 days after my check-out I was charged 4 waters on my credit card and did not receive even a notice about it. I had to call the hotel to understand what was that late charge, considering in the check-out I told the staff about my minibar consumption overnight. As I told the situation, I would expect the charge to be relieved, as this was the first time in many Y. that I ever had an after stay expense billed in my credit card from a hotel. But this was not the case. It was clarified that supposedly I consumed the water (although I told in the check out what was my consumption and therefore it was probably already charged in my check out payment). Even if that was the situation, the Hotel should have contact me via email letting me know that a charge would be billed in my account and explain what was that charge relative to. But the Hotel didn't do anything - they just charged the credit card and I had to find about this expense myself, when checking my credit card bill. I don't plan to come back to SOFITEL Ipanema after this incident.

« not up to 5 star experience, I would only give it 3 stars »

Well positioned and had high expectations but we were disappointed in the room quality, quite tired, ocean view with only one seat to take in the view. Old beach loungers falling apart on the sands. Some bathroom towels missing after room service. Smoking allowed in the open top lounge / pool area, so the smokers went there and spoilt the experience for us non smokers. Pool so small it was only a splash pool.

Although the Sofitel is a hotel still in need of major renovation, the sewer smell can still be felt in the bathrooms, the ventilation of the gym brings the smells from the kitchen to the exercise room on the 23rd floor, so after exercising your clothes liked you worked out in the kitchen, the staff’s care and attention has greatly improved. So what they lack in infrastructure, they compensate in attitude. During my stay, I felt welcome and surrounded by caring people.
