« Pathetic Hotel »

Firstly Juan the concierge told us he’d do a list for us of places to go and restaurants to eat at, but that list never came to us or put in our room. The room was really poor quality, old and housekeeping was horrible with unclean toilets and stained bedsheets. We tried to tell them but they didn’t hear. In the rooftop restaurant (don’t remember the name of the service guy but he was thin not too tall and quite bugged up like he had a gym body) firstly I asked him if he had the Skol beer and he answered staying you like that beer? Really? Indirectly telling me you’re staying at Sofitel and you’re not supposed to like cheap beers that made me feel really bad. Then when he brought the bill he had overcharged me in the bill and didn’t even have the shame to apologise to us. Such unprofessional people who’re ruining the reputation of this brand. I’m really not happy with my stay and this being my second stay in a row where I really didn’t feel welcome or like the stay. I think I should not use any of your hotels anymore with the level of service you provide.

« Spectacular setting but rooms are in need of some TLC. »

Fantastic location, great views and easy walking to many restaurants. Nice lobby and exercise room. The food quality & setting of the 2nd floor breakfast was excellent. Staff were very helpful and courteous. However, poor attention to detail in the guest rooms - several things were in disrepair and bathrooms were dirty. The phone handset didn't work, the bathroom door wouldn't close, and the electronic key-lock broke and I had to change rooms. Also, a group of us had lunch on the pool deck on floor 23; amazing views but with the glass windows blocking any breeze at all, it was incredibly hot and uncomfortable. Such a shame to not have either natural breezes or fans to prevent guests wilting like hothouse flowers!

We were in town for an overnight and the staff at the front desk, rooftop bar/restaurant and spa were so helpful. Especially helpful was the bellhop who secured us a transfer to the airport.

« Quiet, comfortable, accommodating but could use an update »

The hotel had everything we needed. The staff was very pleasant and accommodating. The food and drinks were excellent, however, the breakfast was a bit light for $30 US per person. The location was excellent and the beach accessories provided by the hotel worked well for us. The building itself didn't carry the design elements of the Sofitel brand so the rooms felt more like a luxury dorm rather than an upscale hotel and a 4-star rating is more accurate. Visit the lobby and pool of the Copacabana Palace for a better example of a 5-star rating. Overall, we would choose to stay at the Sofitel again for the great service since that is more important to us than fancy curtains. However, we expect that Sofitel will upgrade the hotel eventually and the rates along with it.

I stayed in room 603. I could smell mould fungus in the room, but when travelling home, I had to wash all clothes and send my suit to dry-cleaners to get rid of the smell. This should not be expected on a fine hotel like this.

The hotel doesn't correspond to Sofitel's level. Badly maintained rooms and bathrooms from 40 years ago. The staff, location and breakfast are excellent. Horrible bathrooms and neglected rooms. It is necessary a remodeling of the hotel.

Pleasant and serviceminded staff. Clean rooms and gym. But the room was cold, with no carpets, flowers or any atmosphere. The stand alone fridge made the impression of a 3 star hotel. Staff and service though was very good.

« Great Stay at Best Location »

I was originally planned to stay at another hotel in Copacabana, but a friend told me to only stay in Ipanema at the Sofitel. Upon arrival, the staff was incredible and Rodrigo really helped to start my stay with a smile on my face. He made sure I had a room to my satisfaction and also to create a memorable experience. When making arrangements for going out and seeing the sights, Claudio Vinicius da Silva is the best! He was always spot on in his recommendations, but also knew how to tailor to my individual lifestyle. The best concierge I have ever experienced! When a hiccup did happen during my stay, Pedro Chaves, the Guest Relations Coordinator, make sure everything was taken care of. He was so very attentive in making things right. The room was clean and bright, however due to the humidity, the floors were warping. They need to be repaired. However, everything else was perfect in creating a beautiful memory of Rio!

Very good despite the fact that, as I understand it, the current hotel is a temporary arrangement while the Sofitel proper is refurbished. If that is not the case the hotel needs a significant upgrade.

« Great room, great breakfast, some minor improvements possible »

The room was very good as was breakfast. The online checkin was a waste of time. Beach service was excellent, with a special mention for the chap managing it (Pedroso?) who was very conscientious and helpful. Also special mention for Marcel in the Ocean Lounge on 23rd floor and for concierge and reception desk staff. Some staff at breakfast could be a little more welcoming! One small issue was we had to ask every evening for complimentary water - it wasn’t put in room automatically

« Old and full of problems »

The hotel was a complete deception. Although its great location, the whole property is very old. Problems were around everywhere. Since a leaking roof in the corridor to a door that didn't close in the bathroom. Also, there was dots of paint all over the bathroom. Our extra bed was in terrible condition, teared. My room simply was not serviced when we returned at night. The rooftop pool was also a deception. It is nothing more than a bathtube. Very small compared to the size of the hotel. The façade was also in poorly conditions. I think it simply was not worthy the high price payed. I could have got something much better and newer for the same price.
