« Half satisfied/Half disappointed »

I stayed at two Mercure hotels over the two days. Wednesday 29/11/2017 Mercure Charlestown, Thursday 30/11/2017 Mercure Penrith. Mercure Charlestown. Front desk was professional and courteous. Once in our room and ready for bed, we had a large cockroach crawl through my daughter's bed. I called the front desk at 10:25 pm requesting her bed be remade with fresh sheets. The female that answered the phone stated that the front desk was closed and the best that could be done was to deliver fresh sheets. Shortly after this, a male came to the door in thongs with piercings in his face and gave a single sheet. When I asked where the other sheets were, he gave me a look that I was inconveniencing him. He returned shortly after with another single sheet. At 11:30 pm, I went to the bathroom before going to sleep myself and found another four large cockroaches roaming around. None of the five cockroaches attempted to run when the lights were turned on or when I approached them to catch and kill them. I spoke directly with the owner, the next morning. He apologised and stated that the hotel had been fumigated a month prior. However, as the weather was changing and becoming more humid, that might be contributing to the cockroaches being present. I offered to show the owner pictures and video I took but he declined stating that he believes me. I did say that I was not complaining to try to get a refund or anything free. However, I did find myself disappointed on being charged full price and no offer of any compensation.

Best shower pressure I've ever had at a hotel. Free wifi was terrible, couldn't pick it up properly in our room. Kept dropping off and strength of signal was bad.

« Retired Lawyer »

We have previously stayed at the Mercure Charlestown, albeit several years ago in a ground level room. With limited knowledge of the property, I telephoned prior to our arrival and advised that I would require a disabled access room or at least a room that was easily accessed because I have suffered from a stroke. I was assured that everything was fine and there would not be any problems. Upon check-in, I was advised that our room was 221. This room is upstairs and almost at the far end of the hotel. I advised reception of my call and had received assurance that access would not be a problem. This property does not have an elevator nor does it have specific disabled access. With having already paid in full for our stay and conveying my requirements as aforementioned, I was in a bind. My husband asked if there was a possibility of swapping rooms to a friendly option for us. Unfortunately this was not a possibility. As I had medical appointments in Newcastle, I was faced with gaining access and egress from our vehicle to our room with substantial assistance from my husband or leave the property and lose our money in full. I was upset, expressly disappointed and ultimately humiliated that I was faced with this dilemna even after making contact as aforementioned. Further, we enquired about accommodation for my husband only from Friday 15/12/2017 through until Wednesday 20/12/2017, as I am having Spinal surgery and were advised that the property was fully booked, however camping was available up at the Watagans! As you may have determined by now, our experience was memorable for all the wrong reasons. I shall be contacting the Ombudsmans office to raise knowledge of my experience and also the office of the Disability Commissioner.

« Not disability friendly »

The room was lovely but the access for people with a disability was disappointing. We were on the 2nd floor, with no lift or ramp available. Pulling heavy suitcases up 3 flights of stairs when you have two bad legs was very difficult. When I mentioned this to a staff member, he kindly helped me to carry one suitcase up one flight of stairs and then walked off; leaving me to struggle up the other 2 flights of stairs alone. To shower, I had to climb into a very deep spa tub. The area around the tub fills with water and the only drainage is onto the floor and down the floor waste. The floor was dangerously slippery. The dining room is also accessible by climbing a flight of stairs. The hot breakfast was almost inedible with dried out sausages like plastic and over cooked bacon. The service was slow and disappointing. On check out, I was advised that there are ground floor rooms for people with a disability. They still need to climb the stairs to the dining room. I was advised to request a ground floor room next time. When I mentioned I would not be back, the receptionist, who spoke unnecessarily loudly, just replied ‘ok’. Very disappointing for a Mercure Hotel!

« Just OK »

Look it was OK but a few points detracted from my stay, 1/ the air-conditioning was just aceeptable but overall I couldn't cool the room to have a really comfortable night' s sleep & that was on the lowest setting temp but I think the main issue is that he fan could be increased as other systems. 2/ also the lack of power points around the desk area where I needed to do some work , was inconvenient , I had to use the spare behind the TV 3/ just a minor one, no lift.. On a brighter note, the food was fine & the view to the coast line was a bit of a bonus & the quiet of the area a plus.

« Clean and comfortable »

Although the bathrooms are a bit tired the rooms are always clean, bed is comfortable and shower is good (except for having to climb into the bath). Meals are always very satisfying. Staff are friendly, courteous and helpful. Location is good for shopping, medical appointments and general sight seeing in a peaceful bush setting - one is only aware of the highway if balcony door is open. I find that the small fridges are stocked for the mini bar so don't allow for personal water bottles or food storage if travelling.

« Good and bad. »

I arrived early on the Sunday morning and the staff were extremely accomodating allowing me to check in early and have everything organised given I didn’t know what time I would return to the hotel that evening. Excellent. Also very helpful on the Monday when we needed a bigger microwave to be able to sterilise our baby’s bottles as well as providing the baby cot. Can not fault the staff in any way. They were just so helpful. Only negative was a cockroach that was crawling in the baby cot at 3am which left my wife nervous to leave our son in there asleep. I also had something crawl on my in the Sunday night. Something I thought you should know about. All in all a most pleasant stay.

« Convenient stay, but the pool shold not be advertised »

It was our first visit to Newcastle, so we wanted to stay in a convenient hotel, so we chose accor group. It was a clean hotel with amenities fulfilling accor standard. Our room has 2 access, the access from the lobby, and the direct access to the car park in front of the hotel where we parked our car. This is a plus! Also the staffs were friendly. My only negative points was the swimming pool. In the photo it looked very nice. But in reality it is very small, with lots of dirts on the bottom. I didn't allow my child to swim there because it's very dirty.

« Good solid hotel...nothing special »

The hotel was nice and had an added bonus of complimentary water bottles and mints in the room. The air conditioner needed dusting in a big way (could see the dust on the top and all over the vents - not so nice for breathing at night). The restaurant had really good food and a great breakfast,. The front desk staff on check-in not able to help with basic public transport info to the Newcastle 500 but try to see us outrageously priced shuttles for $30 per person (more than a taxi or uber). We found the information we needed online though. Great free wi-fi. Sheets and towels crisp and clean.

« Its a new motel »

This establishment is currently undergoing a face lift and it is very impressive. The mouldy smell that I have noticed on previous stays has gone. The wall trimmings and the sitting areas are very modern. The rooms haven't changed but the one I had very very comfortable and met my needs. The breakfast menu had also changed slightly. Still has the pancake machine which I look forward to each time I stay there.
