« Great Expectations; Disappointed Reality »

The location is good in Sydney but the room, #111 was super small for cost and loud. Doors slamming late into the evening and early in the morning. Witnessed a number of guests complaining and albeit staff was courteous to guest, as soon as the turned around they did nothing. We asked for possible room change or break on rate and true to form, they seemed agreeable but after two more days no one followed up. Ultimately we gave up and just sucked up the poor service. We also asked for help getting a reservation at an upscale restaurant and was assured it would be done...well, upon arrival at the restaurant we were advised no reservation was made. I asked the hotel manager next morning and answer was simply, "oh yes, I realised I didn't call for you"...so much for that. We had fun in Sydney but would not stay at Harbour Rocks or recommend it. The parting insult was the morning manager pushing me to take a bottle of champagne in exchange for a good rating on TripAdvisor...I told him I could not do that because my rating was not positive.

« Greatest Hotel! »

This hotel is located in the most convenient neighborhood of Sydney. The ambiance is special with great service and modern style rooms. The food in the restaurant for breakfast and dinner was excellent.

« Harbour Rocks Rocks »

Fabulous attentive and friendly staff and got a surprise upgrade to the harbour view suite. Awesome location right in the thick of The Rocks but very quiet. Scarlet restaurant was yummy. Would definitely return.

« Hotel was lovely, as were the staff. »

We received a free upgrade and free breakfast so were immediately very happy. I thought the hotel was lovely and very central too. The staff at reception were very nice and helpful.

« Desperately in need of a renovation »

The hotel is in a wonderful location and the staff is lovely, but you should be ashamed at the stat of the rooms. They are old, dirty and worn down. The carpeting was all stained, there was mold in the bathroom. It's a disgrace. I would not advise anyone to book there at this price point.

Hi Glenda, Thanks for taking the time to send me your feedback, I am currently addressing the cleanliness issues you have pointed out with my housekeeping team. I have just recently replaced all beds and TVs in every room and am awaiting final approval on a quote to replace all of the carpet in all guest rooms, this should be happening by the end of March. I do apologise that we were unable to have this part completed before your arrival but rest assured we are in the process of getting everything switched over. I do hope we can welcome you back to the hotel in the near future so you can see all of the changes we are making. Kind Regards, Matt Plummer Rooms Division Manager

Lovely building and very polite staff. Unfortunately the hotel was very understaffed. Not one in our 4 night stay was our room serviced befor 3.30pm. This was totally not acceptable. On each day we returned about that time expecting to shower and relax before the evening but found that we had to ask for our room to be cleaned. The lovely terrace has 4 tables and comfortable seats. We sat there with a drink late afternoon whilst waiting for our room to be serviced.. unfortunately all 4 tables were piled high with dirty glasses, coffe cups etc. We had to clear our own tables, piling the dirty glasses onto the low wall. Other guests came and either did the same or just turned back in disgust. We stayed there for well over the hour and no one from the hotel came to clear. We accept that we were staying over the new year period and it may have been difficult to find staff willing to work, but we paid highly inflated rates to cover the higher staff rates for the holiday period. We can only conclude that the hotel is either very badly managed or is deliberately being run on a shoestring.

Hi Verena & Graham, Thank you for staying with us over the busy New Year's eve period and letting me know about your stay. With regards to housekeeping I do apologise for your room being made up quite late in the day, our normal practice is to clean all rooms that have departed in the morning and then move on to those that are staying on in the afternoon, we were unaware of your preference to have the room made up in the morning. I am currently reviewing this practice as I have received a few comments lately where people have preferred to have their room made up in the morning. You had mentioned the hotel appeared to be understaffed over this busy period, I have sent these comments on to my department heads to review their staffing levels over peak times. With regards to the cleaning of the terrace, I have just called a meeting with all department heads and the General Manager to see why this is not being done. Again, I do apologise for the cleaning not being up to standard, please rest assured I am taking appropriate measures to ensure this is rectified immediately. I do hope to welcome you back to the hotel again the next time you are in Sydney. Kind Regards, Matt Plummer Rooms Division Manager

« Disasppointing »

We were disappointed with our experience. The hotel did not represent value for money. The bathroom was very cramped and had we known that there was no elevator we may not have booked at this establishment. The only positive was the convenience of the location.

Hi Peter, Thank you for your feedback, I am sorry to read you didn't like the size of the bathroom or the building not having an elevator, these are of course due to the heritage restrictions on the property we are unable to modify the existing structure. We do have rooms on the ground floor or lower levels if stairs are an issue for anyone, I will add this to your profile for the future. I will also pass your feedback on the rates on to our revenue manager for review. I do hope we can welcome you back to the hotel again in the near future. Kind Regards, Matt Plummer Rooms Division Manager

« Great room, great location, great service. »

Dropped bags at hotel very early before checkin and staff were more than happy to hold them and would call me if Room was to be ready any earlier than scheduled. Returned to find bags in the room, a small treat of chocolate strawberries and a nice note along with my complimentary drink voucher. Very friendly and welcoming staff. Room is large and comfortable. Bathroom could use another shelf for toiletries

« It's always a great place to stay! »

It is about the 4th time we have stayed at the Harbour Rocks Hotel. The location of the hotel is perfect for access to the harbour and the city centre. The lobby is always spectacular, as a welcome and as a place to sit and sip the iced tea provided. Perhaps the staff welcome wasn't as friendly as it has been before (but it was the day before Christmas Eve...). The breakfast restaurant and food are wonderful. I was a bit weirded out that, although I did the booking and the online check-in (which wasn't acknowledged) in my name, for some reason the registration and this email was addressed to our son... I daresay we will be back again some time!

« lousy service »

Hotel rooms are much smaller than the pictures, in a manner such that people get irritated. House staff (5 of 7) was practically not polite, especially the Europeans working there. For information I stay at between 25-50 hotels every year

Hi Didrik, Thank you for your feedback, it is very disappointing to read that our service did not live it up it's usual high standard. I have passed your comments on to my staff and requested explanations as to what has happened during your stay, I do sincerely apologise for the below standard service. I do hope we can welcome you back to the hotel again in the near future. Kind Regards, Matt Plummer Rooms Division Manager

The Harbour rocks is a good location but we found it over valued, the staff where great the rooms are a bit old fashioned, and the air conditioning was not working properly,we complained but was still not rectified, the shower area and curtain did not close properly, the bar was expensive, we where disappointed with the information given regards the rooftop area.

Hi Kathleen & William, Thank you for taking the time to send me your feedback, I will certainly pass this on to our restaurant and bar manager for her to review the bar pricing. I have also passed the maintenance issues onto our maintenance supervisor to rectify. With regards to the rooftop, can you let me know what information you were given? As the only rooftop area is the Harbour View Suite which is a penthouse at the top of the hotel, it is of course a guest room and does not have public access, the only other option I can think of is our Garden Terrace which sits downstairs near to the restaurant and has public access at all times but has no views. I do hope to welcome you back to the hotel again in the near future. Kind Regards, Matt Plummer Rooms Division Manager

« Comfortable and adequate »

It was a comfortable stay, but I was surprised to know that this was a 4-5 star hotel. I received a 50 % discount as I booked at the last minute with discounted rates, so I didn't mind, however if I was paying the full price I would have been disappointed. The staff were for the most part friendly, however one of the porters was a bit unfriendly. Also they had forgotten to take my bags to my room, and I'm not sure if I was meant to get complimentary drinking water, but that wasn't provided. The hotel looked a bit old and tired in places, some of the furniture was worn down and although everything was comfortable it didn't seem luxurious. The breakfast was very tasty, although again, if I was paying full price the variety would have been a little lacking.

« Great venue & staff, disappointing food »

We visited the hotel for Christmas day lunch. Chantelle and the staff could not have been more helpful. The food however was disappointing. Maybe sticking to the classics and excelling would be an idea. Turkey wellington was dry, the bacon tartlet was missing something, the prawns were good but only a sprinkling of melon. The deconstructed pavlova was amateur, and the creme anglaise on the christmas pudding was sticky and lumpy. We would consider coming back this year, but only if the menu improves. Thank you though, we had a great time :)
