« We were really disappointed as such a lovely building looked so tired inside with a desperate need for refurbishment. »

We arrived at 9.30pm having driven 335 miles from Scotland to be greeted by loud music from a wedding disco. The manager tried to find us an alternative room further away from the din but was unsuccessful. Our room was on the 2nd floor with no lift facility. We were however offered assistance with our luggage. The room was bordering on "cell like" with furniture tightly fitted into a very small space. The dressing table was sticking out from one wall resulting in care having to be taken when going to the bathroom in case we knocked our hip/leg against it. The coffee/tea making facilities looked so basic - a tray from a 1970's canteen. The pillowcases were not big enough so the pillow protector/liner stuck out - not nice near my face when trying to get to sleep with Madonna's "Holiday" blasting out downstairs. The room was boiling and we were unable to open the windows because of the noise emanating from the wedding party. Consequently neither of us slept at all well. The bathroom was clean but again could do with some money spending on it to upgrade the flow of the shower. A shower tray would have been better than having a bath over a shower (in my opinion). We did not have breakfast so am unable to comment on it. We will not be rushing back to stay. The staff were very helpful and courteous.

« Poor quality »

Food was very poor- had to send my main back to the kitchen, already didn’t eat my soup because it was seasoned so badly (excessive salt). My friend who I was staying with had over cooked pasta . Restaurant Staff tried their best to provide a good service , but this was difficult with very poor quality food. They did offer us a bottle of complimentary wine- not the one we wanted (as it was out of stock!) , but that was a nice gesture. Restaurant carpet was very stained and tired. We Had used bottles of water in room from previous guest - asked for some new ones at 7pm , but didn’t get until I had to ring reception again at 11:30pm. It Was noisy in room because of wedding , but that didn’t bother us ( was understandable)

« Lovely staff shame about dated rooms »

Reception area was welcoming as were staff however when we got to our rooms it was like stepping back to the early 80s. Bamboo chairs. Awlful decor nets on the window. There was no still water left in the room. Breakfast was good although wasn’t replenished as frequently as it should some empty bowls. Ie fruit and coffee ran out

As ever very good, well looked after and catered for by your friendly and happy staff. I spend two days every other month at this hotel to run a course for circa 30 candidates and the ambience of the setting and the great attitude of your staff make this a pleasure not a chore.

We had a good experience, our room, no. 5 was large and had everything we needed. It was clean and spacious if a tad dated. The food was good but expensive. Kitchen staff were very accommodating of my daughter who is Coeliac.

« Lovely occasion but a bit disappointed with the venue, sorry »

There were a few problems with the booking but these were resolved. The rooms are a bit small considering the expansive corridors in the hotel but I expect this is down to the grade 2 listing. The staff did their best in the circumstances but considering how busy the place was we would have expected to see a greater staffing level.

Stay was generally good - staff were very helpful and friendly, and the food was good. Hotel was a little faded/in need of refreshing in some areas. Room I originally booked (privilage room) smelt of dogs/pets, so had to relocate to a standard room for the duration of my stay.

Staff were very helpful, were able to get my room changed as I was having issues sleeping due to some noise next door. It would've been nice to have an iron and ironing board in the room, but this is a minor issue.

« Very comfortable bed, slightly tired hotel. »

As corporate chains go, the venue is a refreshing change, the building has charm and character; but this is tempered with a slightly shabby interior (eg carpet in the dining room has stains and cigarette burns). The food was very good, and the service personable, although the plastic-topped tables in the dining room spoiled the grandeur of the ceiling and panelling, and the Malbec was ever so slightly corked. I also searched in vain in the room and on the website for information about the hotel's facilities (gym? sauna? etc) but there wasn't any that I could find, the pamphlet in the room was all about the Mercure chain rather than the hotel itself. Other than that, a £5 'tray-charge' to bring a beer to my room was a little excessive I thought, and the room I used overlooked the courtyard where the deliveries arrived at 7AM so I'll know to avoid both those in future! I would stay here again.

« fantastic house and grounds, friendly, competent and helpful staff, food disappointing »

I came for a wedding and stayed four nights. Newton Hall was an excellent location for the event. Dining room and breakfast room fantastic. Tables were very well set. Bedrooms were spacious and clean, could do with a nicer colour scheme (mine had no wallpaper and was a terrible shade of apricot, curtains were okay, so was bed linen). Pity there were nor tablecloths on the breakfast tables. The formica (plastic) tops were a shame to the otherwise beautiful room. Food is the one real weakness. It was very well presented but as tasteless as could be. Maybe try another chef? All in all I loved it and took a good memory home. The staff were very committed and positive.

The tables in the restaurant are wood tables and as a rule we do not tend to cover them with table clothes, but it is a personal preference as some guests do like a table cloth.
