« A lovely night away »

Simple and easy check in , lovely room , fan supplied as it was a very hot day . Everything as we expected . Staff very friendly and made us welcome . And beautiful grounds for a stroll . Only negative was the bar , we felt it was a bit pricy

« Fire alarm in middle of night! »

Hotel decor tired but clean. Staff welcoming and friendly however disorganised response to fire alarm at 2am. Unclear where assembly point was. No staff clearly taking the lead. Role call eventually carried out with staff member calling out guests by first name - not surname or room number - and no head count done when it became clear that some guests were not present. No attempt made to locate missing guests, who eventually came out of hotel 10 minutes later. Fire brigade arrived and checked hotel - no fire. Just as well as had there been, I’m not sure that all guests would have been accounted for and kept safe. Note through the door in the morning to apologise for inconvenience however no offer of eg. free breakfast - would have been a nice gesture. Unlikely to be in the area again but even if I was, won’t stay here again. Pros: Lovely setting, clean, staff friendly Cons: very tired decor, worrying lack of coordination in event of fire alarm Please consider some further staff training about process when an adverse event occurs - I am a doctor, and our training for emergencies includes knowing how to take the lead making sure that everyone knows exactly what is happening- this was lacking in your staff and perhaps some refresher training would be helpful. I can assure you that my team are trained regularly on fire evacuations, however I will certainly be carrying out additional training. The policy is that we provide audible alarms which we do. These are tested weekly. If guests choose not to evacuate upon hearing the alarms then sadly that this their choice. My team will not put themselves in any danger by going back into a building to retrieve guests. We do inform the fire brigade if we have guests we do not vacate the building. However I do take on board your comments and will certainly pass them on. We had booked a room that was supposed to be classed as privalidged, on arrival we found items missing that were supposed to be there. Ie, coffee machine, dressing gowns etc. We spoke to reception and these items were bought to us later on. The room itself was dusty, along the tops of the sofa, and a number of cobwebs in the room. It was a very hot day, and we were unable to open the window as they appeared to be painted closed. A fan had been provided, but made little difference in cooling the room down. We also found our room rather noisy, and neither myself or my husband were able to get much sleep. Had gone 4am when we slept

I do understand the frustration of the unusually hot weather. Sadly being an old building we do not air con, however the best we can offer is a fan. I wish I could control the temperature to make our guests more comfortable but sadly it is not a skill I have. A tired hotel in need of investment to bring up to modern standards poor ventilation windows screwed shut! Tired bathroom. Staff try their best, but the management should either improve it or sell up.

We attended the hotel as a wedding guest. The wedding itself and downstairs facilities including the garden were fantastic. In comparison the room was very disappointing and poor value for money.

Staff superb. Eleanor runs a very professional and welcoming team. All the staff gave exemplary service considering the weather was so hot. They always smiled and absolutely nothing was too much trouble. Your Chef produce some of the best food I have ever enjoyed. I could not fault the food or your staff in any way and would have given them 10/10 The room was good but could do with a good airing, a very musty stale air smell was a little off putting. I would have left the window open but being on the ground floor directly adjacent to the car park, I did not feel it was safe to do so. Also, no gripper rail in the bath/shower. I would have scored the room 6/10 for these reasons.

We stayed at Mercure Burton on Trent for a weekend away. Very pleasant stay. As expected on a weekend in the middle of summer there were weddings at the hotel each day/evening. On one evening all staff members were busy with wedding preparations and the restaurant was unmanned at the time of our reservation. When we enquired about dinner with the several staff members preparing the wedding tables, they argued between themselves who was supposed to be serving. We had to wait for a while before being seated - followed by a very slow and inattentive service. Whilst we appreciate weddings are important, they shouldn't be at the detriment to other guests.

Only one Gripe ,I booked through Secret Escapes and was quoted and payed for a top level privileged double room ,I requested a twin room and was told there was no problem. On arrival at the hotel I was given a standard twin not top level privileged room as requested quite a difference in Value of our stay. A refund would be appreciated.

From check-in to check-out all staff were very courteous ,friendly and helpful. We enjoyed 2 excellent meals in the restaurant and 3 hearty full English breakfasts. The room was comfortable and spacious and although it lacked air conditioning in this current heat wave we had the use of an oscillating fan. All in all a very happy experience.

The hotel is nice and set in lovely gardens with very friendly staff. Unfortunately there is no air conditioning. At most times of the year this may not be an issue, but it was exceptionally hot during my visit and the room was uncomfortably hot.
