« Friendly staff but dated rooms and poor breakfast »

I have stayed here before but the rooms are really looking in need of refurbishment, staff very pleasant and friendly. However, also disappointed by the cooked breakfast- although I went down later than usual hot plate buffet style never looks very fresh or inviting.

« Great staff poor organisation »

Checked in and honeymoon suit I booked not available, had to change rooms. The manager on duty solved the problem the best she could but situation should never of have happened. Second night I came back to the hotel with my wife after our marriage and our room has not been cleaned, I had even gone to reception to apologise for the mess in the room as 7 of us had got ready for my wedding day in the room. Only job maid had done was make the bed even though the sheets had a mark on them, not what I wanted to come back to on my wedding night. I had my bill reduced but this hasn't made up for my experience and I won't be using the hotel again.

« I was disappointed considering the cost for a one night stay »

We had to wait for our room to be ready. One couple in our party had paid extra for an early check in but still had to wait (although not as long as us). In the bar, there were no snacks available although advertised on the menu. The TV remote didn't work (New batteries needed?). At one stage, waste water emerged up through the shower drain. Not a pleasant smell.

« Disappointing and hotel requires major improvements »

£491 for 3 nights; where to start? Mould in the shower, ingrained dirt behind the bathroom door, peeling wall-paper and paint in the room, meal on first night served with wilted, yellow salad leaves, cold plates for hot food, breakfast on Friday had to be rewarmed in microwave, cold plates for breakfast on Saturday and Sunday with several trays of cold breakfast items and guests queuing for replacements. Comments from several other guests at breakfast on the Sunday were greeted with ‘Well, nobody else is complaining’. Returning to hotel at about 8.45pm on Saturday night from a good meal in Bewdley we found bottles and empty glasses left on walls and around the fountain area and a large group of people smoking just outside the entrance lobby with the smell drifting into the foyer and lounge areas. When all the above was mentioned to the Receptionist on Sunday check-out, she was totally charming but could only offer ‘sincere apologies’. The Staff at the Heath really are excellent and are working under difficult conditions but should be trained in how to handle complaints; the place reeks of sloppy management. I have now stayed in several hotels run by the Jupiter Group and marketed under the Mercure brand. The Heath Hotel, like the other Jupiter-run hotels I have visited, is merely average. They are generally clean and comfortable, the Staff are excellent, but the food is sometimes ‘just-about’ edible. However, Mercure, they are not. Whilst the vast majority of real Mercure hotels are fresh and stylish, those in the Jupiter Group seem stuck in a time-warp encompassing the late 70s to early 80s evidenced by the style and age of the fixtures and fittings, the furniture and aged décor. There is also the liberal attitude of allowing smoking adjacent to entrances allowing the smell of stale cigarette smoke to drift into the reception and lounge areas. My wife and I remarked that it is like going back to the Dinner-Dances we used to attend at hotels in the 1970s where brown décor and furniture was used to mask the fug of tobacco and to brighten up the colours of the prawn cocktails and Black Forest gateau that were inevitably on the menu! My advice would be to go to the actual hotel website before booking to check the provenance of ownership. For a real ‘Mercure experience’ make sure it is owned and managed by Accor/Mercure. It may be worth the Accor Group creating a new brand for hotels in the Jupiter Group offering a lower-cost experience for the curious hotch-potch of hotels in the Jupiter Group. I’ve stayed in worse hotels than the Heath but it really needs to improve before I would be tempted to return.

« A tired hotel with a dreadful breakfast experience »

Reception greeting was 10/10. Room very tired. However the member of staff at breakfast was so rude. In fact of all the hotels I have stayed at this was the worst client care I have EVER received. Last week I stayed at the Solihull Ramada which stood head and shoulders above the Mercure. I reported the staff incident to Chris the Duty Manager who was very apologetic. The incident was witnessed by other staff members and guests.

« Lovely hotel, lovely staff, few minor blips »

We recently stayed at this hotel for a wedding. The rooms were lovely and the staff couldn't do enough for us. The food we had was lovely but they did seem to run out of a lot of things, for example my father asked for a ham sandwich and was told they had run out of ham! My husband and brother were told that the bar had run out port and when we ordered our evening meal, the day before the wedding, there were several things on the menu that had "run out". Our breakfast was tasty but my beans were stone cold, even though they had just been put out and I heard a lady the previous morning complaining about exactly the same thing. These things Did not spoil our stay though, the wedding was perfect and I would return. They just need to sort out a few things.

« Very poor, expected much better from a large chain hotel of 4 start standard »

We were a bridal party getting ready for a wedding - the shower got stuck on and couldn't be switched off for over an hour so the room was a steam room, not ideal to do hair and make up. It took two of us individually going downstairs to reception, after numerous phone calls which no one answered despite there being someone on reception when we went down, and asking many, many times what was actually being done to help us (rather than "we are doing everything we can", which looked a lot like nothing) to get a response. When my boyfriend went for breakfast half an hour before it was due to close, to find no staff and a breakfast buffet with hardly any food left on. We had arranged room service while getting ready, I had emailed ahead to say I required gluten free food to be told this was not a problem and they would forward my email to chef. I was served the ends of a loaf of bread but didn't think too much of it. When my boyfriend returned to our room after his disappointing breakfast, the hotel staff were trying to give it to someone else despite it being before check out time and we had booked for 2 nights. When we returned to the hotel after the wedding our key card wouldn't work. I had been told earlier in the day that the hotel was short of key cards (which didn't surprise me given the generally tired appearance, so I went to reception to get another. It was here I spoke to the manager, who offered me and one of the others in the group staying for 2 nights a refund on that night (she also had problems with a blocked toilet - not ideal after a long day at a wedding). We went to bed, there was a wedding on with very loud music until 1am which was not ideal. On waking up the next morning we went for breakfast at 10am (an hour before it finished). There was no one there to seat us, so we just walked through, and I had to go back to reception to find a member of staff who could help with my allergy needs. A very nice (and far too overworked) lady came over, showed me the folder and I chose what I wanted. The breakfast buffet was again very empty and couldn't be restocked fast enough - there was often no glasses, no juice or no bread during the half hour we sat there for breakfast. One of the things I asked for (given I couldn't eat any of the cereals as all contained gluten), was gluten free toast. Even though I had emailed in advance I was very disappointed to hear that you didn't have any gluten free bread left (although maybe I shouldn't have been surprised, having had the two ends the day before...). I then waited until my boyfriend had finished his breakfast before I was given anything, which at least was hot having come direct from the kitchen, and better than his lukewarm food from the buffet. Overall I was very disappointed with the experience, especially given that I had paid £220 for 2 nights in what I thought was a 4 start hotel. I accept that a catalogue of errors led to us having such a poor experience, however I think it would be generous to call this a 3 star hotel, let alone 4 star.

« Dirty unkempt room »

We had the misfortune of spending a night at your four star hotel. We checked in and went to our room, unpacked and made a cup of tea, I realised there was only 2 teabags I went to reception to ask for more. When I asked the response was 'have you looked in the black tray!!' I said I had and had used them, the receptionist gave me 3 tea bags (rather reluctantly). My husband and I then went to sit on the bed with our tea and watch T.V. We moved the pillows and there were two black marks on the sheet between the pillows, on further investigation the sheet was crumpled as if it had been previously slept on and not changed from the previous occupant. The staff on reception was informed of the condition of the bed and was asked for the sheet to be changed. The recptionist said she would get this done and apologised. We waited for around 30 to 40 minutes no one arrived so we went out for a while. When we came back the sheet had been changed. When we looked at the sheet it confirmed our suspicions that the original sheet had not been changed!!! The new sheet had no creases and looked newly ironed. This now brings into question had the duvet cover and pillow cases been changed? Of course this now draws your attention the the general condition of the room. The whole room was dirty and in general disrepair. Wallpaper peeling off the wall, the curtains were very worn with large holes along the draw edge. This is poor, lack of maintenance, laziness. However, thick dust on chair, worn chair edge, filthy shower curtain, dirty marks on walls in bathroom, hair and dirt on floor behind door in bathroom, piece of plastic on floor in bathroom, radiator top rusty and dirty looking, chair rail and table layer of dust, stains from some previous fluid on chair and chest of drawers, badly stained toilet bowl and marks in sink. All in all an extremely dirty room. One may be inclined to blame the housekeeping staff, however, if management do not do random room inspections this very low standard of cleanliness is inevitable, or maybe management standards are so low this is acceptable. We complained to Kendal (reception manager) who came and looked at the room. She was apologetic, my husband told her that he would not sleep in the bed and would sleep in the chair having no confidence that the bed had not been completely changed in preparation for new occupants. The cleanliness of the room was pointed out to her and the general condition of the room. Kendal was asked to remove breakfasts from the bill because we would not be taking breakfast. If management allow the rooms to be filthy then one must question the standards of food hygiene cleanliness of the kitchens!!! Kendal indicated that she would amend the bill accordingly. We were attending a wedding evening reception so would not eat any food from the Buffett either. After the celebrations had finished a group of people went into the bar. There was no staff there. Three members of staff appeared from outside, a tall young suited gentleman said that the bar was closed it was pointed out by several people that we were residents in the hotel. He initially said that he would send somebody round and that we could have one drink!!! Given tha fact that this gentleman was in a suit, it would be fair to assume he was the night manager. I would expect that his role is to ensure the smooth running of the hotel and to increase profitability. Initially turning down business, I believe, is not acting in the best interests of the hotels business plan and public image. All in all a celebration soured. In the morning we went to reception to settle our bill. The staff refused to take any money because they could not understand what Kendal had done and that they would aske Kendal to contact us when she was on duty. The initial contact fron Kendal that afternoon gave the impression that we had walked away without settling the bill until it was pointed out to her the reason the bill was not paid was because nobody could understand her alterations to the bill !! We have stayed in a number of hotels (including budget hotels and high end) and have not experienced such a low level of hygiene standards. You sell your hotel as a four star hotel, I think that this should seriously be reviewed. I have taken a number of photographs which can be supplied upon request.

« Tired hotel leaving much to be desired »

The shower in our room seized on in the evening and was reported to maintenance. The same issue arose in the morning and the shower was stuck on at full heat and pressure for an hour and a half, turning our room into a steam room. This was disappointing when trying to get a bride ready for her wedding. Upon checking out of that room and returning in the evening to check in to my new room the bathroom was not in a satisfactory state with a blocked, dirty toilet. Breakfast was poorly organised and food was not replenished quickly. Overall a disappointing stay.

The staff were friendly, but disppointed with cleanliness of cups. The menu had food stuck to the first morning we went to breakfast. I was unware you could have eggs to order eg: poached, boiled and porridge. I overhead a waitress telling another occupant.

I have already emailed my dissatisfaction details to your team...mainly concerning paying off early check in which did not materialise & we were rushed to attend a wedding then...your duty manager Chris Pemberton Billing assure us & Henderson party would be reinbursed for the inconvenience caused..I have however yet to recieve even a reply of acknowledgement of email...if I hear nothing this week I will be taking the matter further...at this stage I would not be recommending the hotel to friends or family. I stayed at the mercure with my partner as a family member was getting married here. Overall I couldn't fault our stay. Staff were lovely and couldn't do enough for us, reception staff friendly and the bar staff and waiters were amazing! The only reason I gave this a 9 instead of a 10 is quite a few family members had an issue with the tabs booked to the rooms being overcharged and being charged for drinks they didnt have. Reception staff were good about it though and removed the incorrect charges.

« Hotel lovely - Restaurant and Bar awful »

Upon arrival, we were greeted with very friendly reception staff, and were very happy with the look of the Hotel. Our room was also of a very good standard, so we were extremely happy. The only downside to our visit, was when we arrived in the restaurant to have our pre-paid & booked 3 course evening meal. As soon as we walked in, we were guided to a table (no one else in the restaurant at all) by the waitress, who immediately informed us with the comment "Sorry guys we have no Steak meals available, only Lamb" ?. We replied that that did not matter as we were going to have the Fish meals, to which she said "Sorry again guys, we do not have any Fish left ". I then decided to have the Curry (which was just about average), and my wife went for the Halloumi c/w Cous Cous; Aubergines; Courgettes & Stuffed Peppers as she is a vegetarian (bear in mind that this was the only Vegetarian meal on the menu). Whilst waiting for our meals, we were served our drinks one of which was a large Glass of house red wine which cost £7.50 ? dearest house wine we have ever bought. However, the waitress then said that there were no Aubergines and no Stuffed Peppers, and would we accept tomatoes in instead. As we had no other choice, we had to agree. As I stated above, my meal (curry) was okay but nothing special, but my wifes was not very good to say the least, as the replacement tomatoes and courgettes were undercooked. All in all it was a pretty awful experience, leaving us with regret that we did not get a taxi and go into Bewdley for dinner. However, we tried to put this aside, and left our table and went into the bar area for a couple of drinks before retiring for the night. As soon as we sat down in the bar, the restaurant waitress came over and asked us how we were going to pay for the bill. I replied (and showed her our booking confirmation) that they were already paid for at a total cost of £18.00 per head, but she said that the minimum price had to be £44.00. I said that as she could see from the letter, the hotel had already stated a total of £36.00 in writing, so she had better speak to her boss. This she did, and said that it was now alright. I then said that the drinks we had in the restaurant could be added to our bar tab when we had finished, and I would settle that bill with cash, to which she agreed. Then, just as I thought we could have our relaxing night caps the Barman came in, and again said how are you paying for your restaurant drinks. I was now starting to get rather annoyed, but repeated what I had said before, although if it would help I would pay him immediately for those drinks. After a short disagreement, he finally accepted the situation. Just as I thought it could not get any worse, I then tried to order a pint of bitter. I noticed that there was a beer called Worcestershire Way from Bewdley Brewery on sale, so I asked for a pint of it. When he served it to me, it was very thick / cloudy so I waited for it to settle hoping it would clear, but alas it did not. I then gave him the beer back, to which he replied that is a very good beer because I have been to the brewery several times and know about these things. I replied, that I had been drinking this same beer at lunchtime in Bewdley and it was clear and a lovely pint of bitter, so could he please change this cloudy one and try again. His attitude was not good, but he said he changed the barrel and pulled another pint off. Again this was thick / cloudy, so I said I would have a pint of Guinness as I did not like the only other beer available. As the atmosphere was not very nice, we decided to finish our one drink, pay for it and retire early. All in all we only had two drinks ( house red wine & a pint of Guinness) which came to a total of £12.40p. This was more expensive than our recent stays at The Millenium Hotels in Glasgow and Liverpool respectively. To sum up our stay, we would compliment you on your hotel and reception staff, as they were perfect, but we would not eat or drink again in your hotel, we would eat out. We hope this information / feedback helps. Best Regards - Tony & Diane H.

The hotel is somewhat tired and in much need of some T L C!! Having arrived on Bank Holiday Monday in time for lunch somewhat surprised when they had run out of many of the basics e.g. most choices of bread, ham and the list goes on. However, would commend the helpful staff.
