On the whole, It was a bed for the night and staff were friendly. The Hotel is very dated and it put quite a dampner on the stay. Overall Accor Groups budget hotels, Ibis, Novotel etc provide much more modern and comfortable rooms. This cannot be compared to any other Mercure I have stayed in. Beyond being dated the hotel showed allot of signs of aging, peeling wall paper, marked and stained radiators and a tatty bathroom. How it has been able to get to this state i am not sure, It was a busy hotel so certainly gets enough business to justiufy a refurb.

There were no issues with my stay that would prevent myself from booking again for a business trip. However if I was booking for a private stay then I would have to reconsider, due to the small issues such as noisy floorboards and shower mixer taps which sent more water down the plug hole and not the shower head. The room was very clean and bathroom also and the hotel in general suited my trip perfectly.

Shabby carpets and decor. Poor breakfast service, queues for 1 coffee machine, 1 seems to be out of constant action, the breakfast food I like is usually unavailable or comes out too late., (fresh fruit, smoothies etc) Then I asked I was told there was none today and it appeared 5 mins later but too late for me. The waitresses usually have a miserable face but receptionists try hard. The Chinese man is very helpful when he can. I have reported my concerns as I hope to stay 5 nights a week for a considerable length of time.

For: - Nice staff - Clean room, comfy bed and pillows, decent shower, fully opening windows - Quiet stay as many of the other guests were part of polite coach parties - Wifi was easy to access if a little on the slow side - Plenty car parking with lighting and CCTV - Location good for access to Almondvale shopping centres/eateries and stadium - area is well served by a system of pedestrian walkways and underpasses Against: - Note that there is no lift - no problem for us or most guests as it is only has ground and 1 upper floors, but if you have mobility issues make sure you get a ground floor room - As mentioned in other reviews, this hotel is probably due a bit of a spruce-up as some of the carpets and decor have seen better days - As our booking was right in the middle of the Edinburgh Festival (Livingston is quite near Edinburgh), the prices were inflated to reflect this - I'm Scottish so this is second nature to me but please be aware that any visit in August to any hotel near Edinburgh will cost significantly more than most of the rest of the year - Whilst I have noted the good aspects of the hotel's location, the downside is that it's not all that convenient for public transport to/from Edinburgh - you can get a bus nearby but it takes a long time to get to Edinburgh, and it's not that convenient to get to either of Livingston's train stations from the hotel unless you have a car (you can park for free at the stations, though). In conclusion, this is a perfectly acceptable stay for a manageable cost if you have a car. That is all I'd like to say about the hotel, so the following should not be taken as criticism of the Mercure in Livingston, however our experience of the Scotrail services between Livingston North and Edinburgh Waverley is worthy of mention. Our journey into Edinburgh was blighted by a number of cancellations due to signalling failures, however the return to Livingston that day was appalling beyond comparison. A group of about 10 inebriated idiots (Glasgow-bound guessing from accents/sensibilities) passed around at least 5 bottles of wine and 10 cans of premix cocktails whilst belting out a number of sectarian chants and aggressively 'encouraging' others to join in. Other passengers were terrified, including a lovely Muslim family with small kids. One regular passenger said that it is always like this whenever there is a significant event in Edinburgh. Be warned. Apparently on the next weekend (the last weekend of the fringe} Scotrail cancelled so many trains to the West that there was a small-scale riot at Waverley.

Quality of room was fine as were the public areas. Friendly welcome from staff. Food in restaurant was good. Only quibble was our last morning (a Monday) breakfast where there were shortages (none) fresh fruit salad. Ran out of bread at one toaster. One toaster not working. Tables left uncleared. Rather took the shine off an otherwise good stay.

Nice welcome - quick and efficient staff at the welcome desk as well as in the restaurant area - good food and service in the evenings and also at breakfast. Step outside of the main foyer/bar & restaurant and the hotel décor is in need up updating - hallways and rooms. The hallways had buckets collecting water dripping from ceilings - some repair work needed, the décor is dated. Rooms generally clean - some finer attention needed in the bathroom.
