Good but the food could have been better

The hotel is dated and needs investment. The bathrooms are tired. There was a continuous hum all night, sounding like a tumble drier. My experience was brought up in my scoring due entirely to the staff, who were brilliant. The young lady on the desk and the young lady at breakfast are both worth singling out as being especially good.

The rooms were very comfortable and staff very friendly. Unfortunately the bathroom smelt as if hadn't been used for a long time and smelt very stale. We had to spray with our deodorant every time we used it.

IT issues at check-in Noisy room due to wedding (when I complained to reception we were offered a different room). Room was too hot - needs air con Had issues at checkout, the receptionist refused to accept that dinner was included as part of our stay. When I originally made the booking I was asked if this was for a special occasion, I told them we were staying for our wedding anniversary, there was no mention of this during our stay.

Unfortunately our short break was spoilt by a computer breakdown! We arrived on the Friday afternoon with the intention of going to the leisure centre to use the gym and swimming facilities. When we arrived there was a number of guests waiting to be checked into their rooms but unfortunately due to a computer problem the system was down. The the lady on reception was having to check the rooms manually to see if they were already occupied. We were offered a complimentary drink while we waited. We were then given a room which unfortunately on our arrival found it to be occupied. We returned to reception and explained the situation and was then allocated another room. The lady on reception came with us to check it was okay but again unfortunately it was found that this room was also occupied. Eventually we were allocated another room that was not occupied. I would like to reiterate that the lady on reception was doing a good job under very stressful circumstances and remained very professional and polite. By the time we got into our room it was too late to use the leisure facilities as we had our evening planned. We did however use the leisure facilities on the Saturday morning, collecting our voucher from reception on our way out. I was disappointed that it hadn't been pointed out that we needed to take our own towels to the leisure centre as after a gym workout we were unable to use the swimming and sauna due to a lack of towels. The package we booked also should have included a bottle of wine in the room on arrival however we never received this. I did realise at the time but didn't feel it was appropriate to complain at the time due to the chaos.

This stay was booked through Secret Escapes to celebrate our 40th Wedding Anniversary. I phoned the hotel the week before arrival to inform them of this and to order flowers and rose petals for our room. We arrived at 5.30 on 1 Sept and was given the card key for what we were assured was designated a "Privilege Room". Sure enough the flowers were in the room BUT the room was in a truly disgusting state as follows: 1. The carpet was badly stained 2. The dressing table was not fit for use being badly damaged/worn with much of the veneer broken away with the chipboard base showing 3. On close inspection we noted that the pillowcases were only single wrapped, some put on back to front and when removed some of the pillows were badly stained. 4. The room was in desperate of redecoration and certainly not becoming of the privilege status. This was all hugely disappointing given the special occasion (and most upsetting for my wife with any joy from surprise and the flowers completely lost!). We immediately complained to the Duty Manager who conceded that the room was not acceptable. She offered us the only alternative she apparently had which was another "privilege" room over the corridor. This transpired to be marginally better (carpets not stained and furniture sound) but was still in desperate need of redecoration and refurbishment (e.g. the bathroom fittings were very old and the vinyl floor stained through use over use). Given that this was our only alternative, we stayed in the second room but to say the least our 40th Anniversary night away was ruined! On check out, the hotel manager did wave the cost of the flowers as a concession. PLEASE TAKE THIS FEEDBACK AS A FORMAL COMPLAINT TO SECRET ESCAPES. We used your company on recommendation of a friend who assured us that you only use reputable hotels. On this occasion, Mercure York has let you down and both of you have let us down over what was meant to be a truly special celebration for my wife and I.

Fawlty towers with grumpy staff

Bar staff were unbelievably rude, fed up and grumpy. Food was ok, nothing special. Breakfast was a joke, half hot food was finished, queues of people waiting 20 mins on sausages. 3 pastries left on plate to be told others had just gone in oven. Still Waiting after 25 mins. A hotel must know how many quests are booked in due breakfast and can prepare food ahead and keep warm. For the price you charge for breakfast on top of accommodation is ridiculous. Hotel staff appeared to be running around the whole time but not sure what exactly they should be doing or even caring ( that was our impression). Never stayed in such a badly run hotel before. For a Mercure we expected better.

A smile would have not gone amiss at reception - very terse! Rubbish was left outside door on arrival, bins hadn't been emptied, not even when reported! Room had no view except for small courtyard, walls and windows - not the view expected for a gift from my children for my 75th birthday! Not fans of self-service breakfast and for a company that advertises luxury we were not impressed. Is it your policy to allocate cheaper rooms for gift voucher accommodation - you must disappoint a lot of people? I will NOT be telling my children that they paid good money for a mediocre experience.

We felt very welcome at the hotel with the friendly and helpful greeting at reception. The room was large and comfortable. We both found that the duvet was too heavy for the time of year, too hot overnight with it over us but too cold not to have any covering. Very difficult for you as everybody feels differently. Bar service was good as was breakfast with a nice variety of food.

After a false start with the room allocation ( very quickly resolved with an apology) we enjoyed our stay. The staff in the dining room had to deal with a large party of Amercan tourists but did not allow this to neglect our service. Full marks to them for keeping everybody happy. At all times staff were polite and happy to help.

Lovely spacious room. Paid for breakfast for both mornings which is a huge regret. Went to breakfast at different times on both mornings (10am Saturday & 11am Sunday) and most items missing and then some staff were quite rude when asking how long the items would be. Once they came out the quality was average but unable to have a full breakfast as items bought out 5/10 minutes apart so by the time another item came out the previous item was all gone! As well as this on the Sunday morning there were no pastries available, asked for these but none bought out. Overall not a good experience.

Noisy Extractor fan

We have stayed with you quite a few times. Love the weekend deals with breakfast and a meal included. We have been in a superior suite before but this time the extractor fan was so noisy it spoilt being able to be in the bathroom, having a shower, putting makeup on and no chance of having a relaxing bubble bath. Deafening to say the least. Even didn't bother putting light in night when needing the loo as it would then be on 10 minutes until it clicks off.
