Proximity of train station to hotel and to the Old Town were plus points. Also on checking in, reception was helpful and friendly. We did not like the room assigned but the staff gave us a better room. On our second stay, the room was ok and comfortable, but the shower curtain stank. Clearly the hotel requires refurbisment or upgrade, part of which seems to be done. Breakfast was ok, but boring.

I had booked this hotel as a surprise for my partners 30th Birthday - we arrived to a construction site with a refurbishment in progress when there was no mention of this when booking and yet you are still charging full price. I requested a room with a view if possible and ended up looking out onto the back of the hotel. The rooms that feature on your website as a family room are in no way what we stayed in! The pictures show a lovely bright spacious room with a 2 seater sofa in a bay window and I was greeted but a dull outdated box room. Overall this was meant to be a lovely get away which we were all disappointed in!

I was underwhelmed when we first arrived, and slightly disappointed that we had not been informed of the refurbishment going on. The room was a good size, staff were friendly and helpful. I was surprised at the lack of air con in the rooms and fuss appointed that there was no lounge area to relax altho this could be due to the refurb. The room suited our needs (I was a carer bringing my client to Edinburgh for a shirt break). The wet room was great although it was a shame that because the bathroom was modified to be useable by disabled guests, there seemed to be a distinct lack of places to hang towels, dressing gowns, etc. The overall cleanliness was acceptable but I noticed things like a missing toilet lid which put me off. The central location and the view from the room counteracted the negative points, although a sofa or more comfortable armchairs would not have gone amiss.

« Lost! »

We have been guests in Mercure Edinburgh for years. It was never perfect and notably some members of staff but it had its advantages - location, a certain charm. We booked for 2 stays this summer and both were a disaster. The reception desk is terribly unfriendly and consistently unhelpful - notably this Italian guy whose type of job it is clearly not. Rooms remain old fashioned, with many features not working. They are doing works to transform the typical dining room into a charmless one - rather than improving the rooms. Between zero sense of customer and service, poorly maintained room and the loss of character, there is nothing to be positive about. Sorry but we won't be back.

My boyfriend and myself booked the Mercure Princes St hotel for a weekend break to the capital. We arrived earlier than anticipated but the woman who checked us in could not have been any more helpful or friendly. She made sure we got a room with an excellent view over Princes st and the castle - even though this meant waiting half an hour it was very much worth it (we still checked in half an hour early despite this) and the hotel was more than happy to keep our luggage for the wait. Overall the room was a high standard, very comfortable bed and as mentioned great views! Staff very friendly and helpful. Highly recommend!

We managed to get a privilege room which had its own balcony (great in he heat weve just had) facilities were excellent. Hotel is in the middle of a revamp which didnt really effect us at all. Staff could have been a bit more hands on though, not being shown how to use lifts without card. Hotel is extremely hard to get in contact with as the number i have just takes me to a call centre which seems to be in india?

The breakfast had amazing selection of tasty food and the location was perfect. However, the bedrooms were boiling hot. Thankfully there was a small fan to cool it down slightly. Air con would have massively improved my experience at this hotel

Reception was a mess - decorators and the smell was awful. Bedroom was small but at least the beds were comfy. Breakfast was a disaster - table cleared whilst we were getting the hot food which wasn't very hot and a bit dried out (egg was rubbery!). Not a good experience at all. Do not understand why there were no Scottish staff especially in our Capital City - very strange indeed.

Everything was fine with except the room. Room looked a bit tired on places. Wallpaper coming loose and marks & cracks around the bath. Also not to have air-conditioning these days is pretty major. Obviously Scotland isn't renowned for its weather. But we were going through a heatwave and it was not possible to open windows due to noise. Luckily you provided fan and water. Bit I know other people I was with did not have these. This is fundamental i think, and something you get at hotels with a much cheaper price point. I'm not sure price matched what you had to offer

Bathroom very dated, only 1 plug socket in room, miscommunication between booking team and reception, reception area is halfway through being painted and looks awful. Workmen start at 8.30 so lots of noise - WiFi is worse than 2003 dial up.

Too much street noise all night even on the 7th floor, I barely slept. In addition, I forgot my keys in the room and no one bothered to contact me. I would have been able to get back and get them, but instead I found out when I got home the same night.
