« Poor quality hotel in need or extensive refurbishment »

Faded hotel that has the feel of a cheap seaside B&B. Walk into the 60s lobby and avoid the in-house tramp as you take the lift to the safety of the out-of-the-way reception. Then to the room. Badly in need of modernisation, I would say the decor is early 90s and the bathrooms probably late 80s. Comfortable enough but not worth the money. Chipped, worn and tired. No iron. Not air conditioned. Loud exhaust chimney all night at the back. I would avoid breakfast as it's an awkward affair, poor range and scrambled eggs were a special order from the kitchen that took 15 minutes. Good views though, but spoiled by the dirty windows.

« hotel: very satisfied, restaurant: extremely dissatisfied »

Dear, I arrived at the hotel, all was ready, and, without me mentioning anything, the reception confirmed to me that I had dinner included on the first night. Going up to my room I noticed that I had received an upgrade to a very nice room. (side note; last year I was gold status, I have not received one single upgrade out of 28 nights spend in accor hotels. 2 short of keeping the gold status, so now I'm back to silver, and the first thing I get is a room upgrade. Thank you for that to the Mercure Edinburgh, no thank you to "accor hotels", according to the old rules I would even have been platinum this year with the 26.500 points I got throughout 2018, and the old level was 25.000 for a platinum level.) Anyway, back to my stay in Edinburgh. After arriving in my room, I immediately went to the restaurant for the diner included in the package. Two waiters were questioning me on me actually having a dinner included, as if they had never heard of the package before. The young male waiter was even saying that I do not understand English… Jesus, I am doing audits all over the world in English. It’s not easy to understand the Scottish accent, and I’m totally fine with that, but hey… I’m dining in the Princess Street Mercure restaurant, I would at least expect the waiters to do an effort and speak a bit more common British English. I had to mention about four times that the hotel reception confirmed to me 15 minutes earlier that I have a diner included. Then they started asking “the £20 or £22 dinner? How should I know, this is not mentioned ANYwhere. In the end, the female waitress apologized and told me I could select dishes up to £22. Now that I’m back home, it becomes very clear why this number is not mentioned anywhere in the booking. It’s because the “diner on one night” package is sold as £39 pounds extra … compared to the same “1guest, room with breakfast included, no cancelation possible” (when booking the same room with 2 guests, it is still £35 pp. Conclusion; for one person, the package is £17 or 77% too expensive and for 2 persons the package is £26 or 59% too expensive. I thought pre-booked meals or packages were supposed to be cheaper than buying on the spot… not so in this hotel apparently. besides… the diner was not nice at all. Squid rings… barely any squid inside, and the “favorites” shepherd’s pie wasn’t much better. same for the breakfast; the so called famous English breakfast… not nice, no good tastes. No fresh vegetables, only one kind of bread available, not even a tea towel available so hold the French bread when slicing it, so you are eating the bread that all other guests have been holding on to… So, hotel: very satisfied, restaurant: extremely dissatisfied

« Very comfortable »

Lovely hotel in excellent location. A little noise from Main Street outside to be expected with the gorgeous views and excellent location.

« Bathroom disgusting »

We received this as a present and requested a room with a view and booked another night with you the view was off dirty windows and the fan system o believe. Although the bed was clean the room very disappointing. The bathroom was disgusting mould under soap tray tape holding the bath panel on. And the back of the toilet looked like it hadn’t been cleaned in months. I have photos if you would like to see them

« room was clean and quiet which was ideal for the business i was there for. »

the staff in restaurant were very good and attentive, food was hot and served quickly my compliments tot he kitchen staff on this. The lift swipe in had issues working with the room cards so myself and several other guests had to have these reset and yes I kept it away for my mobile phone at all times.

« Service was good but the rest was not as pleasant. »

I was placed in a room by the fire escape making me very uncomfortable. It was hair in the bathroom sink that wasn't mine. I also had to go down to reception 4 times to update my card because it didn't work anymore. The receptionist also registered me as a member without informing that to me. The staff was professional and friendly but the experience on cleanness, room choice and this key card issue have made my decision to not return to this hotel for my upcoming business trips.

« Comfortable but the hotel needs updating and a refurb. Very similar to Glasgow mecure. »

Okay, would have expected a cleaner more modern hotel for the price.

« it was very basic »

I didn't like the smell of smoking on arrival inside the front door, really bad first impression.Staff were good and helpful.Room was as basic a room as I have stayed in for years,my room mate described the bathroom as being "like the bathroom in my gran's nursing home 25 years ago". the view from my room is hard to describe without being 446.Great location but needs huge improvement especially the rooms....

« Rugby and Show »

Excellent room. Comfortable well designed and bathroom suite to die for. First time I have had a shower with a wall mural of Edinburgh castle. (Was in superior room)

« A little disappointed »

As loyal customer who has been staying at the hotel for many years I was very disappointed with the room which to be honest was the worst one I have stayed in at your hotel. It was classed as a double but a single would have been more appropriate (very small). Also the shower was fairly useless. Having said all that I will always look to book The Mercure first as it is in such a good position and the breakfast is always first rate

« Disappointed as an Accor Hotel Business Plus member. »

The Breakfast Manager should learn how to read a room key folder. My breakfast had been pre paid with the reservation, by looking up the wrong number I was asked if the breakfast should be added to my room. House keeping do not have notice of the guests who have checked out before preparing the rooms for the next guest/s. On Saturday morning, 9th February, I was awoken by house knocking on the room door at 08:30. They politely apologised remarking they would come back later. It could be argued that the "sleeping" notice should be hung on the room door handle. Having used Accor Hotels, "Sofitel", "Novotel", "Mercure" and "Ibis" brands I was surprised that House Keeping had no idea. These brands in other countries provide House Keeping with up to date infromation on guests checking out and the rooms to be prepared for the expected new guests. The hotel was informed of my early arrival but reception claimed that they had no knowledge. When showing them my confirmation, with the note, included they apologised. Other guests were checking-in as well, non-members, who were offered an early check-in. I had to change for my meeting in the hotel toilet, in which the cubicles had no toilet paper. With the Irish Rugby fans in town I appreciate that the hotel was fully occupied but obviously Accor Business Plus has little acceptance at the Mercure Edinburgh City Princes Street Hotel.

The room was run down, the shower did not work, bed wasn’t comfy and didn’t get any sleep. Will not be booking another nights stay in this hotel anytime soon.
