Clearly enjoyed Edinburgh and the festival. The car traffic arrange around the entrance to the hotel, means there is no set-down area. It complicated our arrival by car. At least the public areas in the hotel were undergoing a redecoration and painting, from a scheduling point of view I'm surprised it was not completed prior to the start of the Fringe Festival, probably the top tourist event of the year.

« Good staff, good location, disappointing hotel »

Staff were professional and seemed to care. Hotel appeared to be being refurbished in public areas. Food in restaurant was OK but breakfast was nothing special. The room was adequate, good view onto Princes Street, decor was tired. The bathroom was old, the toilet didn’t flush properly, I had to unblock the sink and the shower was pathetic. As the hotel had an old sign on the outside, I can only assume it hasn’t been a Mercure for long, not the standard I expect from Mercure. I discussed this on checkout.

The room was comfortable and location of the hotel superb. The service however was lacking. Not enough staff in the restaurant to cope with number of guests. The food and drinks overpriced. Had much better food and service from the local pubs. Extractor fan in bathroom not working and despite reporting on our first day was not repaired. Only had room serviced on first day as staff said too busy on second. Another of our party reported a bulb not working in their room however not dealt with. They ordered a news paper every morning but never got one. The hotel lobby and reception were a building site for 2 days as new carpets were being fitted and repainting taking place. In the middle of Edinburgh festival and with the subsequent exorbitant prices being charged it was not the greatest timing for redecoration. Overall dissapointed as i feel tarriff charged did not equal service and standards received.

« Dreadful to start off but then improved completely when the room was changed. »

We started off in a room overlooking the fire escape and machines. There is no air conditioning and it was hot. We had to put a mug inbetween the window to keep it open. The carpet was frayed. The toilet barely worked. It was dark and depressing. ABSOLUTELY DREADFUL!

Proximity of train station to hotel and to the Old Town were plus points. Also on checking in, reception was helpful and friendly. We did not like the room assigned but the staff gave us a better room. On our second stay, the room was ok and comfortable, but the shower curtain stank. Clearly the hotel requires refurbisment or upgrade, part of which seems to be done. Breakfast was ok, but boring.

I had booked this hotel as a surprise for my partners 30th Birthday - we arrived to a construction site with a refurbishment in progress when there was no mention of this when booking and yet you are still charging full price. I requested a room with a view if possible and ended up looking out onto the back of the hotel. The rooms that feature on your website as a family room are in no way what we stayed in! The pictures show a lovely bright spacious room with a 2 seater sofa in a bay window and I was greeted but a dull outdated box room. Overall this was meant to be a lovely get away which we were all disappointed in!

I was underwhelmed when we first arrived, and slightly disappointed that we had not been informed of the refurbishment going on. The room was a good size, staff were friendly and helpful. I was surprised at the lack of air con in the rooms and fuss appointed that there was no lounge area to relax altho this could be due to the refurb. The room suited our needs (I was a carer bringing my client to Edinburgh for a shirt break). The wet room was great although it was a shame that because the bathroom was modified to be useable by disabled guests, there seemed to be a distinct lack of places to hang towels, dressing gowns, etc. The overall cleanliness was acceptable but I noticed things like a missing toilet lid which put me off. The central location and the view from the room counteracted the negative points, although a sofa or more comfortable armchairs would not have gone amiss.

We have been guests in Mercure Edinburgh for years. It was never perfect and notably some members of staff but it had its advantages - location, a certain charm. We booked for 2 stays this summer and both were a disaster. The reception desk is terribly unfriendly and consistently unhelpful - notably this Italian guy whose type of job it is clearly not. Rooms remain old fashioned, with many features not working. They are doing works to transform the typical dining room into a charmless one - rather than improving the rooms. Between zero sense of customer and service, poorly maintained room and the loss of character, there is nothing to be positive about. Sorry but we won't be back.
