« "Your room? Sorry, it's round the corner mate" »

I'd love to be able to rate the accommodation at the Mercure following my booking here for one night, but sadly I did't actually get to stay here, as a result of a still unexplained cock-up by the staff. I arrived in the morning before the room was avaialble, so the reception staff invited me to go through "pre-checkin" (card details, etc) and leave my luggage. I wasn't able to return to the hotel until after dinner, around 11 pm, when I was looking forward to being shown to my room and crashing for the night. Instead the reception staff tapped away fruitlessly at their PC, exchanged some odd looks, and then told me that my room would in fact be at "another property", which turned out to be the Ibis Style around the corner on St Andrews Square. So I, and my suitcase, had to troop round and check in there instead. No explanation was offered. I booked the Mercure because I had to catch an early train from Waverley station. The Ibis is further away. So a very poor showing, I'm afraid. I won't be booking this hotel again. No option but to rate service as "terrible". Other ratings are for the Ibis.

« Good people let down by cleanliness »

The people in the hotel were very friendly, the food and service were excellent. The experience was let down by the cleanliness of the bathroom. It smelt of stale urine had mould on the walls and celing the waste pipes were dirty the extractor fan did not work. The bath and fittings need updating. The door had been planed down to fit the opening and had not been repainted. We complained after the first night we were there. The staff did their best with a deep clean. But removed mould was already returning after a day and the stale urine smell continued.( photos available if required)

« We enjoyed our 4-night stay, double the length of our previous Mercure stays, but it would have been less so had we not made a successful request at check-in for a room on the front of the Hotel, with views. »

As ever with Mercure we found the staff to be pleasant and helpful. The room was comfortable, although somewhat hot in temperature, with no air conditioning. Due to the traffic noise below, it was not always possible to have the windows open. We noticed that biscuits were apparently no longer supplied on the tea tray, which we do not feel is justified in terms of the cost of our stay. We had one dinner at the hotel, and were pleased to note that the previous menu had been changed to the current one. At breakfast each morning we found that the food on the buffet was not hot enough by the time we took it to our table. This was partly because the plate warmer was apparently not switched on. Only on one morning was there a napkin protecting the 'slice-yourself' baguette from germs on guests' hands, and individual sealed portions of marmalade available - it was neither desirable or hygienic using a 'communal' jar and spoon. We prefer toast to be served at our table (as at the Manchester hotel for example) rather than having to disrupt breakfast / waste time waiting for the toaster to become available etc. We did enjoy the Scottish food items at breakfast however - haggis, pancakes and cranachan!

We stayed there for one night upon arriving in Scotland. The hotel was ideally located to do sightseeing and shopping. It was close to both the bus and train stations and the tram from the airport. I would definitely stay there again.

« Good location, clean but tired property »

Conveniently located by the train station. Nice cooked breakfast. Large room. Only downside, is the property and rooms are looking dated and tired...

« Central location, comfortable rooms, friendly staff »

We were driving and chose the mercure through booking.com because it showed that there were parking facilities. Being new to Edinburgh and following the nav system we were forced to go down roads which were for public transport only. This was extremely stressful and i believe that directions to the parking facilities should have been included in the confirmation at booking. We were surprised to find that there was no fridge in the room and we had medication which needed to be refrigerated. This was given to reception which we were not comfortable with. Other than these couple of issues we had a comfortable stay.

« good location, friendly staff, hot room »

The stay was good (nice room, good location, helpful staff) except the room was ridiculously hot. Turning off the heat didn't help.

« Very disappointed »

I used my bank debit card in your bar late on Saturday 9th September. By a strange coincidence my debit card was cloned and used on Monday 11th September for £170 and again the next day for £145 before my bank contacted me to put a stop to any more transactions. I had not used my card anywhere else. When I called your hotel to complain, they were not very interested. If I was you I would be very worried because there was a lot of overseas visitors at your hotel that weekend.
