the staff were lovely but the room was very basic and cold there wasn't the facility to buy a snack and there were no biscuits in the room. I was hungry but didn't really want a full meal but my only option was to go to the bar ( which I didn't want to do being a lady travelling alone) I instead ordered a burger and drink which came to £25 which was a lot and the burger wasn't very nice. as I said the room was cold and only had 2 pugs so I had to make some decisions on which device I wanted to charge . there was no information about wifi or facilities such as room service in the room. it was difficult to get the TV to work. the room was quite a way from reception and there was no lift to my part of the hotel. breakfast was ok but nothing special. so the stay was adequate but not brilliant and I wouldn't be able to recommend it

Lovely old building, but neglected and down-at-heel inside. Once you get out of the main reception area, which itself has threadbare carpets held together with gaffer tape, the wood panelling disappears and it's all stark corridors decorated with lining paper and ancient carpets. Various broken fixtures all around, including the phone in my room. Fire alarm went off twice while we were trying to get to sleep. Breakfast however was very good, plentiful and well cooked, and the staff were universally helpful and friendly. After all this, being charged an extra £20 for the privilege of checking out a couple of hours late felt like a bit of an insult. The low room rate was what attracted me but there are far better maintained hotels available for less.

Having stayed at the Bankfield back in August and giving a frank report of our findings, i.e. in need of a general refurbishment, this recent visit did have actual problems. Firstly, the heating in our room, and that of our friends in the next room, both 'Privilege' rooms, did not work. Both rooms were supplied with small oil-filled heaters (not very efficient) and nothing else was done. We do know that at least one other room did not have working heating. Also, the extractor fan in our bathroom didn't work and the duty manager suggested we leave the door open, not at all satisfactory as that just meant that the bedroom became steamy and damp. We appreciate that this was over a weekend, but as the hotel didn't seem particularly busy it would have been a nice gesture to have been offered a change of rooms. We do have another few days booked at the Bankfield in December and sincerely hope by then all problems will have been sorted out. Having lived very local to the hotel for 40 years it is very convenient when visiting friends, however, if there isn't some improvement in the near future we may have to consider looking for alternative accommodation.

The service and staff were amazing, dealt with my queries promptly.

Upon arrival at the hotel, I was struck by the contrasting aspects of the hotel - the beautiful gothic part juxtaposed with the modern and less attractive parts. When checking in, I was surprised that we were not informed about important information such as the location and timings for breakfast the following morning and what time checkout would be. On proceeding to our room, I was taken aback by the general upkeep of the hotel. I had high expectations based on the pictures I had seen online, but was shocked at the general shabbiness of the communal areas and our room itself. Our room was generally pleasant, but the bathroom was in serious need of some mould removal, the décor was showing its age, and some more power sockets in useful places would have been appreciated. Breakfast the following morning was good, although some more options and a little less grease for the cooked selection would have been nice. On returning to our room later that day, I was surprised to find that the tea and coffee provision had not been replenished and some items of rubbish had not been removed by housekeeping. Checkout on the final morning of our stay was quick and efficient. Overall, our stay wasn't bad, and the staff were in general very helpful and friendly. This hotel has the potential to be so much more than it is, but at the moment is let down by a clear lack of investment and attention to detail in areas that guests notice.

The hotel was dated and tired. My room had a massive rip in the flooring in the bathroom, exposing spongy under flooring. When I returned the this had been taped up with black tape. I then discovered a sandwich in the trouser press. Not a great experience overall.

The reason for the stay was a business meeting where I would be discussing sales areas with my colleagues in the UK, I booked the room and paid £20 extra for a early check in so everything could get underway. Unfortunately the room wasn't ready and I had to wait 50 minute to gain access into he room. This disrupted the whole day and all the timings of the meetings had to change. A coffee machine was also included in the room which didn't have any pods. I contacted reception on my mobile as the room phone didn't work and was told by Peter he would arrange to send some up to the room. Fifty minutes pass and still no coffee. I called again and Peter said he would bring some himself, a few minutes later a maid knocked on the door and said there wasn't any. A hotel of this size ? very poor

Stayed 2 horrible nights both with people running up and down the corridors banging on room doors. I fully appreciate that functions are a vital part of the hotels revenue however allowing none residents access to the accommodation area not only poses a health and safety issue of not knowing who is on site at any given time along side the serious question of personal security for the residents but from a customer experience perspective it just wasn’t good. The security and safety of your guests should be priority but this fell well short it my experience.

Check in was super fast, room was clean but very cold. Heating did not work and could not get hold of anyone when calling reception. Room service menu had limited options. So had to go out for dinner considering there isn’t any restaurants local either. Very very noisy, the room next door were very loud and were noisy most of the night. The shower was spitting water not flowing like it should, there was not complimentary toiletries other than a bar of soap. Breakfast was average, was overcharged at checkout, when pointed this out the gentlemen didn’t agree with me. Each time I come back I have an even worse experience. I do love staying at the hotel as it is very convenient for me and is normally great value for money.

Low rating due to no person on duty at Reception on arrival on 14/9/19 at 1.45. No room available so changed in toilets before going to a 2.00 pm function. Then on returning in evening no help was offered with luggage even though room not accessible by lift even though my wife & I are in our 80’s. Very poor.

The room, supposedly an "executive room" was shabby and a let down. In need of decoration and possibly refurbishment, everything was 'tired' and dated. There were only 2 available coat hangers, the bathroom was not 100% cleaned. Shower head designed at a height for a very small person. White towels looked like been in a wash with black socks. 4 poster was missing a beam from front to back left. Room service didn't answer the phone either at night or in the morning. There was insufficient staffing in the bar, and no one informed us at check in what time breakfast was served from and until. The 'executive' room (102) was above the dining room as it transpired and so at 7.30am on a sunday morning we were rudly awoken to the beat of music playing in the breakfast dining room as it reverberated through the ceiling which was our floor. A call to reception remained unanswered. At breakfast, the staff member took our room number and that was that. We had to ask what the procedure was and where we could sit etc. At which point she said "sorry, I was miles away" which obviously made us feel welcome!. Everything was pretty dried up except the sausages which were the best part of the stay, and the eggs because we had to wait for several minutes until they were cooked. When we checked out, the male on reception was on the phone to the chef and just nodded at us and took the key and continued asking about some food rather than making him hold and asking us about our stay etc. Not worth £162.

I enjoyed my stay but was disappointed that a request for a plug for the sink was never recognised, five days keeping water in the sink with a flannel was a bit difficult. The staff were friendly , room a bit shabby but adequate. Food was very basic but enough to fill me up! The Hotel is in need of an interior facelift!
