I felt that the check in was poor. Was asked for credit card to cover payment and any extras. I explained that extras was not a problem but the room had already been paid by company credit card as per my reservation conformation. I explained this to the receptionist as on my last visit even thou it had been paid on the company credit card I was also charged for the room and meals on my personal card. He was going to look into this but did not come back to me. the check out was smoother and the lady had all the booking and payment info.

« comfortable »

The radiator was switched to its highest setting and the window could only be opened partially, which made it rather warm. The bedside lamps were not working but apart from those issues it was very comfortable. Beautiful building and grounds. I wish the weather had been more clement so we could have explored.

« Great location »

Hasn't changed much in the 13 years since we were here. We were here for a friends birthday party. Lovely big bed in our room and breakfast was really nice. The views are fantastic and the grounds are lovely to have a walk around.

« Lovely hotel, spoilt by penny pinching »

We have stayed here four times in total and have arranged a party of 60 function at the hotel. Hotel still nice and great setting, however your bar is extremely poorly stocked for a good quality hotel. My wife wanted Campari - no we don't stock that. Then wanted a soft drink of ginger beer - no we don't stock that. Some shelves were empty, although bar staff said it was fully stocked. Poultry choice of about 4 liquers, 2 of which were coffee. Also only one beer on tap. This has to be the worst stocked hotel bar I have seen. A couple of martini bottles graced one shelf and underneath that was empty. You cannot run a hotel and not fully stock your bar, it doesn't work like that. At least your whiskey shelf was full, although I wondered if they had another bottle of Glenfiddich in stock, once I had finished the one third of a bottle that was already there.... Out of our party of 5, my friend and I ordered sea bream. This came up so small and so thin, one could scrape it off and put it on two fork fulls. This was accompanied by around 6 or 7saute potatoes. We complained, but restaurant manager said it was head office determining portion size and they cameinto the hotel prepared in that size. Our whole party agreed it was a child's portion and the overall saving for your group will actually be less than zero at the end, as I will tell friends not to bother as will my other friends in the party, so it is totally pointless. When we held our party for 60 people back in 2011 at Elcot, everything was spot on in those days, with the functions manager and chef in residence then. Standards have slipped and it appears the accountants are now running the business, rather than pleasing the client. My wife and I are returning 20th October 2017 with two friends and I request that your group breaks open your piggy bank and not only stock the bar with Campari and a number of other drinks one would find in any good quality hotel and also review your portion size, particularly on fish. It would also be great to have a few more vegetables on the plate, rather than just potatoe and red potatoe - very limited. Overall, including my arranging the big reunion function, we have spent a lot of money at Elcot and may arrange another reunion function in the future, but based on the measly bar and child size portions, it makes me rethink. Please do reconsider your position, as you have a wonderful hotel with good rooms and great position, so don't spoil it for the cost of a few bottles of drink and a morsel of food. Finally, I have to ask that your restaurant staff take more care with allergies. I have an allergy to Balsamic Vinegar and I told the staff this, but when I tasted a tiny bit of the gravy in a separate pot, I had instant pains, which is what I get with that specific product. It may not be the managers fault as he said it said nothing on the pack it came from (not home made!!), however it was fortunate that I only tasted a minescule amount. All good restaurants and hotels now take this seriously, otherwise you may have illness on your hands or even death for more serious allergies. Whilst he listened, it was more a case of " no no, it will be alright". Not a deal breaker, but I mention it to help you, as well as myself. I rarely complain, as nine times out of ten, I merely do not return as more often than not, no one listens to complaints at group head offices, as they operate so remotely from their core businesses. Please do not fall into that category, otherwise it is a waste of a great hotel, which is falling down on matters that are almost insignificant to the size of the business. So please stock up with drinks and review your restaurant portion sizes.

« Reception area needs updating »

Pleasant stay. Our room was comfortable and clean very small in comparison to other Mercure hotels we have stayed. Staff were very pleasant especially Paul who went extra mile to look after us.

« could do with an update »

Firstly I found the reception desk excessively high ( I am only 5'1") and intimidating. Receptionist and all staff very friendly and keen. The room was "old fashioned" although the bed was comfortable and large. No water, biscuits and minimal tea and coffee, more were delivered after asking. Chips on the bath and some tiles. The evening meal was second rate. My terrine was not served with any bread, rolls or toast. The fish of the day was served with the skin on which was soggy (crispy skin please if left on) so altogether not the best dining experience. Breakfast was a good selection.

« Very peaceful and relaxing »

Hotel stay was very peaceful and relaxing - middle of nowhere, very little noise. Travel: easy to find, lots of parking for the guests Welcome: easy check-in and reservation for dinner; very friendly. Room: for the price, it seemed somewhat overvalued. Bar/restaurant: food and drink were nice, although the cocktail waiter on service didn't seem too knowledgeable about the cocktails on available - products missing/unavailable; overall cocktail flavour wasn't particularly well made. Over the course of multiple cocktails, this had less of an impact. Dinner: delicious. Food was spot on. Breakfast: very tasty. Staffing: very friendly.

Excellent, apart from the fact that the fan in our en suite didn't work and water was dripping in through the conservatory roof and on to my shoulder during breakfast.

Very disappointed in a hotel that is in a fantastic location with outstanding views. The rooms are too hot, no air con is a massive flaw, I know due to costs sometimes this can't be helped but it seems to be an issue having now read your reviews. I've stayed in a lot of different hotels and value for money yours is one of the very worst. Because of the air conditioning factor being probably somewhat an expensive investment you don't seem to think is worth giving your guests, has it once seemed, maybe worth putting a small fridge in each room? I mean come on, even some of the cheapest accomadations you find will have a fridge at least. Younger staff members seem enthusiastic and I can't compliment them enough, the real let down on this side seems to be the more experienced, mature members of staff, who it seems probably trained the younger staff members but don't seem to lead by example and just pass you off. The wedding I attended was organised by the bride and groom and planned to great detail, and the person left in charge didn't seem to have any clue to what was going on and I would certainly not hesitate to let people I know looking at wedding venues that they might be better off looking elsewhere until someone more suited to the job was in charge of making their day run smooth without any hiccups and embarassment.

« Apalling experience »

On arrival sunday 27/08/17 around 15:30 we were given our room card (number 45 from memory) I returned to reception informing them the room was not made up (in other words had not been touched). We were given a different room 36 very small with heated towelrail on in bathroom (hottest weekend recorded for August). On way to dinner 19;00 l reported at reception the room was small and the towel rail needed turning off as the temperature in such a small room was stifling. The extremely polite receptionist looked into this and discovered that it could not be turned off and put a fan in the room. That evening the wedding reception music kept us awake until 01;00 (we had to sleep with window open due to excessive heat). We were informed on second evening after dinner (prepaid) that the service charge of 10% is standard, I asked for it to be removed as it was not there the night before. For dinner on second evening we ordered bread for £3 only to be informed there was no olive oil when bread arrived I asked where balsamic vinegar was (bread with balsamic vinegar and olive oil) this was then brought out, obviously minus the olive oil. At breakfast on 29th there was no butter, only flora spread. The waiter supplied some of the Chefs butter. It was also noted that the swimming pool is now not in use. As you can probably deduce I could go on and on. This was at least our 6th visit to your hotel and now our last. The hotel is approx. 1hr from our home so easy for us to book as, we did this weekend IE we booked Saturday 26th for the stay commencing on Sunday 27th. As an additional note for Mercure in general I think it is misleading to state you can get a 3 course meal for the £22 (which in reality is £19:80 deducting service charge) allowance from memory there was no combination of 3 courses that met this statement. I hope you receive these comments as extremely fair criticism as they have been diluted to how we both really feel. Rgds James and Penelope
