« Cosy, Comfortable, Country House Hotel. »

We booked a Twixmas stay through Secret Escapes in a standard double room. Our room was spacious, clean and comfortable. Although the Hotel was smaller than we were expecting, we did like the lounge facilities which gave a feeling of being in a Country House with the period features, real open fires and comfortable furniture. It was a nice place to sit and relax after dinner with a choice of different rooms where you could seek out privacy if you preferred a quieter space. We enjoyed the meals served at dinner and found the food to be of a high standard. The breakfast facilities were adequate. The staff were friendly, efficient and polite. All in all, we felt that it represented good value for money with the package that we purchased. Where we felt improvements could be made were; on the first night we were kept waiting a very long time for our dinner service due to a large group being booked in at the same time as us. Our server did repeatedly apologise explaining that there were only two chefs on duty and when our food did eventually arrive, it was very tasty and fresh. On our first morning the cleaner washed the floor between the guest rooms and the breakfast room during service and although the warning signs were out, you had no choice but to walk across and I slipped on the wet floor and hurt my arm even though my husband was holding on to me. It would have been nice if someone had explained on our first morning that you could request items from the kitchen at breakfast such as porridge and scrambled eggs which weren't made available as standard. It is disappointing that the swimming pool has been shut off from guests and they are unable to use it. Finally on check out we were charged service charges on our drinks purchased at dinner which were never adequately explained and which we could find no mention of anywhere. We had previously stayed at other Mercure Hotels and never come across this before. This is why we scored the Hotel an 8. However, when everything is weighed up, the Hotel is worth considering for a stay in the Newbury/Hungerford area and we wouldn't rule out staying again.

We love the country surrounding the hotel, for me it was a trip down memory lane as I used to live in this area. Our room was comfy and we had a great view. The staff were very friendly and helpful.

room needed maintenance - light bulb out and bath plug didn't fit, the hot breakfast was not hot and the eggs were greasy. The staff however are outstanding and very keen to help. Your man on reception is a real asset.

There was a mixture of very good and uncomfortably bad. The food was excellent and we enjoyed the 2 evening meals and breakfasts. The service was excellent, very attentive and friendly. However, on arrival, the public areas were uncomfortably cold all day and our room was also cold. The single radiator in the room was behind furniture and totally inadequate. The furniture was a miss-mash of dark brown items which crowded the room and seemed misplaced. The room decor and furniture could do with freshening up. Having said that, the room was clean and the bed was very comfortable.

« Generally good but incredibly cold on the first night. »

As above, generally good but with a few lapses. Having guaranteed the room on Amex I assumed that carried through to the stay, as experienced with Accor abroad. At check-in no mention was made that another "swipe" would be required to charge to the room. May I suggest you brush up your procedures. The room (probably unoccupied for a while) was "freezing". The very small radiator was off and, having turned it on, took a good few hours to warm the room. Upon returning to the room the following day we found that the staff had provided an electric radiator. This resolved the problem. Another item for a pre-occupancy checklist? Aside from this, the staff were very helpful and friendly, the food was good and the room (otherwise) comfortable.

« Cold but enjoyable »

Had a nice time. Room was initially very cold. Would have been better if the radiator had been turned on prior to our arrival so that the room was warm. Instead we had to do this ourselves and wait a while for the room to heat up. Apart from that, generally a lovely big room. Toilet seat and cupboard door were broken, so these could do with fixing (but minor things)

« lovely relaxing and quiet stay in superb surroundings »

myself and husband had a night away at the hotel, we upgraded our room and were thoroughly impressed. we had a 3 course evening meal which was excellent. the only downside was that we had breakfast delivered to our room but did not get what we ordered but this did not spoil the stay. we also paid for late check out up until 6pm which was a real treat however new guests were given access to the room at 3pm, luckily we were up and dressed.

Enjoyable stay. Particular mention for the staff who were efficient and very polite. Excellent. It was disappointing that the pool and health club was closed. Only a few gym machines available. The room was comfortable and we loved the food.

Excellent staff, friendly and efficient. As other reviews, the entrance carpet has seen the end of its useful life. Probably to maintain the original Shelly house character the first impression as you walk up to the reception desk is very under whelming. Not what you expect from a hotel chain- but this does not affect your stay, its only an observation. All other aspects, room, food etc was excellent. Its a shame the pool and health club had been closed as it would make this a more desirable place to stay.

As I am sure that this feedback will serve as an encouragement to all of our staff I can confirm that the carpet in reception is only a few years old, when the carpet was designed the designer went for a shabby chic look so it is the style of the carpet and not worn. We also have the nice large open fire in reception so sorry if your felt this was under whelming. In regards to the pool we have not had this for some years and is not advertised on our website or any of the hotel information/brochures the hotel offers a mini gym which is on our website and was open over this period. « An enjoyable New Year's Eve celebration. »

We had a very pleasant stay, good rooms and extremely attentive staff. The welcome drinks to the function were a nice touch. The function room was beautiful and the music lively.,making afor a great atmosphere.The food could have been better but I realise it is difficult to cater for such an event. Overall the hotel is very comfortable with good seating area On the minus side, a lovely log fire would have added more of a festive mood, as would fairy lights to the top of the tree , rather just on the lower branches. I also thought that the lampshade on the top of the horse,lowered the tone.

staff were very friendly, approachable and very helpful. The overall event could have been managed better, being told lunch at 12 and left sitting in dining room for over an hour without any communication about the delay was very annoying and most certainly spoilt the experience

« Excellent choice for overnight stop »

Value for money. Good sized room and nice comfortable bed. We were able to have our dog with us and have a ground floor room, which made it easy to take him outside when we needed to. We didn’t use the restaurant or bar as we arrived fairly late but it looked impressive when we checked out the next morning.

Staff were good but the hotel needs some TLC. The French door in our room did not close securely. The lighting in the room was inadequate. The dining room was chilly. We experienced unwelcome noise from the nearby swimming pool even though it was supposed to be closed. Corey (Codey?) who served at supper was excellent. No air conditioning in the room.
