Hair dryer in room did not work, bin in bathroom had not been emptied. We went down to breakfast early, 09.00 and the breakfast looked like it had been sat there all night.

Attended a wedding. Main room very nice, but brown carpet in entrance lobby, bar etc needs replacing - grubby and fading - not a good first impression. Staff generally very helpful, although some seemed disinterested. Grounds beautiful. Food very nice, hot and served in good time, however slow replenishing breakfast items on first morning.

We stayed at the hotel with a wedding party. The wedding was lovely and well organised. Our room was clean, spacious and perfectly adequate but needed redecoration as does other areas of the hotel. The furniture in the communal areas was a blue velour and appeared relatively new but the carpet in the reception lounge and bar area was drab and grubby looking. Breakfast could have been much better, the staff were slow to replenish the trays of hot food and I had nearly finished before the eggs came out - no scrambled egg option and the coffee machine was out of order on the second day. Staff were ok but lacked personality. Colour needed in the beautiful grounds in the form of flowers in pots, tubs and borders to make the most of the beautiful location and to offer more photo opportunities for wedding parties.

Arrived at the same time as a wedding was in full swing and a coach party arrived. Hotel was full. We were put in The Mews which was some way from main hotel. Rooms smelled of damp. Double bed against a wall so one person could only get in from bottom of bed. Decor was faded and dated. Grouting round bath peeling and mouldy. No wifi in the room. Bar was crowded and short staffed so waited ages to get a drink. Couldn’t get a table in the restaurant until after 8:15pm so went to eat elsewhere. Breakfast also disappointing, dining room not very clean and only limited choice for those who don’t like cooked breakfast. No croissants or bagels or yoghurt, for example. Booked two rooms at full price (total £250) but on arrival told no twin rooms for our teenage children even though this was what I had booked. Also booked as pool was advertised but closed when we arrived. Was supposed to be a special treat but in the end couldn’t wait to leave. Very disappointing.

Rude and unfriendly staff when we arrived. A poor room that very much needs to be renovated. Uncomfortable beds, shabby furniture and a strange smell in the room. Overall a poor experience.

Our stay was fine , we had air conditioning. However my sans accommodation was appalling, broken fans , accommodation inadequate, door locked , even universal key wouldn’t let them in , had to wake wife and sleeping children to get in !! Management accused my son of being on drugs !!! As his eyes were blood shot ! He was cross at what was happening and had just taken his contact lenses out . I am not happy about this accusation!! They have refunded his stay . I think where his accommodation was with staff quarters !!!

Was staying for a wedding so hard to judge facilities on this but the room and bar and breakfast were good. My room was 2 hours late however which was very frustrating.

We were fairly comfortable in our stay and the room was spacious. The breakfast was adequate. For the price we paid for our stay, it was a fair deal. There was an issue with the hotel not collecting payment when we booked and thought we had paid.

Our stay was disappointing: the toilet didn’t flush. And we chose to leave for home at 6 in the morning because we could no longer could put up with the heat in the room - despite the outside temperature being cool. The electric fan didn’t do much either. Would not stay here again

Nice room, clean and comfy, as the weather was extremely hot the staff had thoughtfully put a fan in the room, Excellent breakfast, We were there for a wedding the day was very hot and there was an issue with wasps from a nearby farm, I was told it was a problem with the dairy farm, someone had been out to check for nests and ethereal weren’t any, as the staff new about this then I strongly feel that something could have been done about the wasps, a few guests were stung! Also the bar prices are very expensive, and that’s why I only give a 7... The bar staff however were very good at giving out water when requested due to the extreme heat.

The hotel has a nice setting and the staff on duty were absolutely awesome, attentive and very helpful The wedding organisers was absent and did not live up to her promises. Support for setup of the venue (staff availability) was missing and relied completely on our team. We made it work. The wasp nest caused people to be stung and was problematic. The hotel should have removed this but have not - poor. The staff on duty around the hotel and serving my 100 guests were absolutely fantastic and did a great job

Although described as in Newbury it is not however it is very well appointed has lots of Grounds and can easily be found about 5 miles out of the Town. It is isolated. The facilities are well described just a pity that the Hotel has given up the pool. Guests need to check the reservation details and fully understand what is the deal if any they have booked. The staff are a little under trained. There is no air conditioning which with the weather and temperatures that I experienced led to a very warm night.

The hotel has been built in 1768, installing air-conditioning in hotel bedrooms will certainly not be allowed. All rooms are equipped with fans. I do apologies if you felt some team members are a little under trained as we do have a few casual summer staff. I do hope you would visit us in the near future.

Not really good enough. Below par to other Mercure hotels sadly. On the first day I requested more towels as there were only one set in the bathroom. I was brusquely told they were in the cupboard. They were in all fairness up on a shelf inside a plastic bag. But surely when you book for two people they should be ready in the bathroom. On the second day the second hand towel wax not replaced. This is one example of the service being too haphazard. One evening we were kept awake by an almighty argument in broken English. It appeared to come from the kitchen area so we can only assume it was staff.

It was necessary for me to apply for the Reward details from being a regular user of Accor Mercure Hotels. Sam the Receptionist on duty was unable to explain points earned to date which led me to a rather frustrating start to the stay. The Hotel was relatively quiet 20 % occupancy so he willingly allowed a Privilege Room.

We had a fun weekend with friends and family. The rooms were fine - 2/3* standard; too warm by far during a very hot spell. The staff were generally helpful. Bar staff seemed ambivalent to service standards in my brief experience. The location is ideal and the environment really good.
