Enjoyable place to stay, central for touring the area & a lot to see in the area. Good friendly staff willing to help. lovely clean rooms & the place as a hole. The food is served on hot plates when required as well as hot food being hot. A good selection to help your self at breakfast time.

Lovely, staff were helpful, food was lovely and room too. The only criticism would be that the communal areas were very cold, I understand it was a miserable day and there were not many guests but at times my partner had to wear her coat even whilst having a meal as well as the longe area

Our room was no better than okay. The carpet was worn, one of the chairs had a broken arm, the toilet roll holder was wobbly and water could be heard cascading outside when it rained. The shower was excellent. We did not eat or use the bar during our stay. Our general impression was that the hotel looked rather ‘tired’ and needs some tlc.

Very nice. Enjoyed room, view, food and log fire. Might of enjoyed the grounds as well if they weren’t covered with 6 inches of snow (lol). Couple of minor (lack of thought) points: towels in bathroom not set for 2 guest, 2nd set in plastic bag in wardrobe; Heating not on in our room ready for arrival when temperatures expected to be fluctuating around zero (1 radiator not working).

Set in beautiful parkland, the hotel is a warm and cosy retreat from the stresses of modern life. Staff are great and Adam on reception is the personification of great service, nothing is too much trouble. Brian at breakfast is both friendly and helpful. A wonderful short winter break.

Excellent hotel and staff friendly.Food and drink not up to quality considering the prices charged.I have been served heinz tomato soup as a starter on a previous visit and a stale gin and tonic on visit before last.We love the hotel but choose not to eat there and drink little due to prices

Almost didn't book because king sized beds were described as double on web site. Room including bed comfortable. Bedding and towels very good. Colour of lobby and stair carpet drab - made it look like it was dirty. Food fine. Would have preferred to be served with coffee and tea at breakfast. Nice to have plenty of parking.

Only adverse comment was that the lights weren't bright enough and bathroom lights no good for putting on make up! Only one (dimmish) bedside light for two.

I enjoyed my stay at the hotel very much. The staff were friendly and the room lovely. I enjoyed dinner and breakfast. However with my booking I had paid for a bottle of prosecco with dinner. Unfortunately we were only given a glass each. I did email the hotel after to enquire if the booking did include a glass or a bottle but I haven't heard back. This was the only negative about the stay and otherwise I would have rated top marks. If I were to stay again I would bring my confirmation booking to dinner to ensure I receive what I paid for (however I don't think this should be necessary when all bookings are electronic.)

« Cosy, Comfortable, Country House Hotel. »

We booked a Twixmas stay through Secret Escapes in a standard double room. Our room was spacious, clean and comfortable. Although the Hotel was smaller than we were expecting, we did like the lounge facilities which gave a feeling of being in a Country House with the period features, real open fires and comfortable furniture. It was a nice place to sit and relax after dinner with a choice of different rooms where you could seek out privacy if you preferred a quieter space. We enjoyed the meals served at dinner and found the food to be of a high standard. The breakfast facilities were adequate. The staff were friendly, efficient and polite. All in all, we felt that it represented good value for money with the package that we purchased. Where we felt improvements could be made were; on the first night we were kept waiting a very long time for our dinner service due to a large group being booked in at the same time as us. Our server did repeatedly apologise explaining that there were only two chefs on duty and when our food did eventually arrive, it was very tasty and fresh. On our first morning the cleaner washed the floor between the guest rooms and the breakfast room during service and although the warning signs were out, you had no choice but to walk across and I slipped on the wet floor and hurt my arm even though my husband was holding on to me. It would have been nice if someone had explained on our first morning that you could request items from the kitchen at breakfast such as porridge and scrambled eggs which weren't made available as standard. It is disappointing that the swimming pool has been shut off from guests and they are unable to use it. Finally on check out we were charged service charges on our drinks purchased at dinner which were never adequately explained and which we could find no mention of anywhere. We had previously stayed at other Mercure Hotels and never come across this before. This is why we scored the Hotel an 8. However, when everything is weighed up, the Hotel is worth considering for a stay in the Newbury/Hungerford area and we wouldn't rule out staying again.

« Very quiet and comfortable stay with shortcomings »

Stayed with you 4 times and everything was fine as usual.I think that the hotel group should be with the increasing trend towards veganism be able to give a better option on their menus 1. Vegan starter and 1 main course option puddings zero apart from fruit salad , if one stays more than one night your choices have been exhausted. The service charge also was an unpleasant suprise as unless you happen to have the eyesight of a hawk the small print was very hard to spot .
