« Hotel in need of refurbishment »

Friendly staff and a polite welcome but the whole place is in need of a drastic refurbishment. Did not feel like a 4 star hotel. We only chose a Mercure Hotel over others as we stayed in the Mercure Arras in the summer which was also 4 star. We were so impressed with the hotel that when it came to a break in the UK we decided to go for a Mercure. When we arrived the lady on reception was lovely. On arrival to our room we were disappointed. No space to store anything and a room that only just fit a family of three, not even space to sit other than on the beds. This was not a huge problem but very different to the room we had in another Mercure Hotel at the same price. The biggest issue was the smell when we entered the room. It smelt damp and unclean, almost as though the previous occupants had left and the room had not been cleaned/aired. The room itself desperately needs refurbishment it was old, tired and in a state of disrepair. Admittedly we did not raise this during our stay as we just wanted to enjoy our family time. This theme continued in the pool. We were welcomed by a lovely staff member who was really helpful. We were told we could change in the disabled/family change (our little girl is 4). It was dirty, smelly, unhygienic and a very unpleasant experience. Again the pool could be so amazing but needs refurbishment. We also booked a meal in the hotel on the second evening. We wish we had not bothered. The menu was narrow in choice, overpriced and little more that poor ‘pub’ food. Four star accommodation should have food that matches this. The worst part of the meal was that they got my daughters meal wrong. As we could not eat until 6.30pm (not very family friendly) we wanted to order quickly. Service was disorganised and they brought mine and my husbands food first. The waiter said the chilli would be along in a minute. My husband thought he was joking. My daughter had ordered chicken and vegetables. He brought chilli out and when we explained he apologised and said he would sort it. At least 20 minutes later, with a further prompt from us her meal arrived. My daughter was upset therefore I had not eaten my meal as I had said I would wait for her. So I had a cold meal and my daughter ate far too late. The waiter kept saying we could have drinks but we had bought a bottle of wine and my daughter already had two drinks. I had to suggest that her meal should be free. I was dissapointed with this response and with the whole restaurant experience. The whole stay has left me wondering if we should use Mercure in the future. We certainly won’t stay at the Abbots Well Hotel again.

« Like visiting old friends. »

Sometimes the hotel is completely full. On such occasions, my daughter will rearrange the other elements of our family holiday, including the dog in kennels, just so that we can ensure we stay at the Mercure Abbotswell Chester. The smile on the Receptionist's face was a treat, and it extended to all the staff. We were travelling with a visiting cousin from South America. She really enjoyed the stay.

Pros - the hotel was very close to Chester zoo. The staff were all very friendly. The bed was very comfortable. The bathroom seemed to have been recently decorated and appeared to be quite new. Cons - there didn't appear to be a lift? We had to carry our luggage up the stairs. The pool area and changing rooms need to be refurbished. The online photographs of the pool are very misleading, they make it look so much bigger and like a spa. My email reserving breakfast 2 days before my stay was not responded to and staff had no record of this when I checked in. It took 3 attempts to bring all of our breakfast order to our room by which time the food was cold. I was overcharged at check out and had to explain what my bill should be, this was resolved but I was not presented with an invoice which made it difficult for me to dispute the incorrect charges.

I was left disheartened not only by the quality of the rooms, but by the lack of customer service and after service by your hotel. A complaint I raised via email remains ignored as does a tripadvisor comment. I note that the general manager has responded to every comment on the website but mine. I used to be a fan of Mercure, having used other Mercure hotels many times. This experience has most definitely ensured I will not use a Mercure ever again as I found the customer service appalling following a genuine complaint; having to move 2 rooms due to bodily hairs in the bath tubs and towels. After having the second room checked when I complained it was also unacceptable due to hairs, I was told there was no hairs in the tub, despite me actually having pictorial proof of this. I said I would go back up and show them where, but was told no, not to worry. I have a feeling they actually checked my friends room, which was in fact the wrong room. I am not somebody who complains normally. Had the second room been fine then I would have been content. I sent a detailed email of my complaint after, saying I was not satisfied with the response I received. As I said, this, and tripadvisor, remain ignored. I think the team need to review their internal policies about what constitutes an acceptable stay, and how to act when a stay is far from acceptable. I felt that the fact the initial complaint was also palmed off saying they could not refund as it was through secret escapes was poor; I had to actually argue for a refund of a room I could not use starting that it was unreasonable to charge somebody for a hotel room (2 in fact) which could not be used. I did not feel that the refund of a room which was unused made up for the poor experience all round.

Was expecting something a little nicer than what we got! The room was very dated and had a smell of damp The restaurant was overpriced The seats and tables at the bar were filthy The way to the spa is through a fire exit that says don't open.. Breakfast was very basic, and you could tell it had been left out for a while The dining room was dirty, the chairs were stained and grubby looking I was thinking it would be more of a luxury hotel but it was only just clean, I much preferred my stay in premier inn the previous night - it's clean, airy and you get what you see!

« Ok, but could of been better »

Hotel was in a good position near the park and ride . The staff were friendly and helpful. Howerver the hotel is a little tired. The curtains in our room were ripped . There was only one draw to put your clothes in . No wardrobe , and not enough hangers for two people .

« Good value for money - family room with proper beds »

The hotel is a bit tired decor-wise, the sink in the room was slightly chipped and the bathroom very tired looking (although the shower was hot and powerful which was nice). However, the quality of the food served and the professional, helpful staff more than make up for this. We stayed in a family room which had a double and two full-sized, proper single beds. Most hotels have a sofa bed for the children in the family room and even with two, smaller than average, 6 and 7 years olds, the sofa beds are never big enough. So to have a really decent sized room with proper beds for everyone was great. Also the beds and bedding were all comfortable and clean. The staff couldn't be more helpful, they organised our zoo tickets at a significantly cheaper price than I could order online. They accommodated our children's fussy food requests. The dining/breakfast room badly needs updating - however, the food really was very good. Not over fancy, but good quality, honest food. And, again, the staff were really helpful and friendly. Location is just outside Chester - 7 minutes drive to the zoo and 5-minute drive into town. The pool area is also a bit outdated (family changing area is a bit like a strange corridor/storage closet) but in the pool the water is warm and it is a good depth for children and adults. There is also a very shallow baby pool for very little ones. Would definitely recommend especially for families.

« Lovely one night break »

We were brought a virgin experience for christmas and didn't quite know what to expect as we have had one for Windsor before which was something to be desired. From the front we weren't sure what it would be like but once inside it was beautiful. It had a professional feel. Staff were welcoming and helpful. Our room wasn't ready until gone 2.30 but we sat in the bar comfortably. We had upgraded our room and were very happy. Bed was kingsize and very comfy. We had a great nights stay. With only a 10 minute drive into the centre of Chester it is situated in a good place. Breakfast was also exceptional. Very happy overall.
