Not the best visit

We have stayed at this Hotel many times in the past few years without any issues until are recent stay. We arrived at ten past 2 to be told are room was not ready so we had to wait in the bar area. Hotel seemed empty to not sure why there was a delay. The fire alarm went off on 2 occasion, twice around 8am on 2 mornings and once at 9.30pm. As the alarm in the evening stayed on we get dressed and headed for the reception with other guests to be told by the receptionist that we had to evacuate as she could not turn the alarm off. Seconds later we were then told to head back to our rooms, other guests had gone outside in the rain and were not very happy. At dinner the restaurant was closed, i guess due to the lack of numbers in the hotel so we ate in the bar area. I had to send my soup back to the chef as it was stone cold and the fish and chips were not up to the usual high standard we have had on previous visits. The hotel itself is ideal and we will probably return but as for this visit we were not impressed

very poor, no disabled press buttons to open doors both are disabled not suitable for mobility scooters

Fatboy686 Family - 10/10/2019 TripAdvisor review

Our stay at this hotel was, frankly, disappointing. The place looks like it could do with refurbishment generally, and the room we stayed in, especially the bathroom, needs attention. In the bathroom the toilet seat was broken, and the bathroom was not a nice place to be. Apart from looking dark and dated, some of the floor tiles were cracked, part of the door frame on the inside was missing, the wall tile repair inside the shower itself is shoddy. The mould around outside of the shower cubicle put us off wanting to use the shower at all. Also there was no shower gel or shampoo in either of the rooms. The receptionist was only able to find some shower gel when I asked her. The bed was comfortable, but in our room the windowsill was loose, the TV small, and as I said, the room is generally in need of modernising. Given the price we paid for the rooms (We had booked 2, although I did not look inside the other one) I think we would have got a better room at the Days Inn at Wetherby Services for around half the price. We did not make use of the bar or restaurant, so I can't comment on those. So as I said, a disappointing experience. As our daughter has just moved to Wetherby we expect to be visiting regularly from now on, but will not be using the Mercure again until it has been refurbished. I was waiting to review this hotel here as I have contacted the hotel about these issues to let them respond. But as I have had no reply from them I have decided to post this review.

Dirty Room

J D. Business - 09/10/2019 AccorHotels review

I've been staying with you for almost 10 years but this time the room was dirty. There was a towel with dried blood on it which I'm not sure if was missed by the cleaner or a dirty towel put back. The shower tiles were dirty as was the surround on the shower. The toilet was stained brown which can be solved with bleach being left in the toilet. All in all very disappointed

Unfortunately our stay was not great. We had a dirty towel in our room and when I went to call down to reception to ask for a replacement neither of the two telephones worked at all. In the middle of changing and getting ready for a wedding nearby I walked down to reception and was assured we would get a replacement towel, however none appeared during our stay. Our room also had no soap for washing hands after using the toilet, I had not bought soap with me expecting there to be some. Over all this has not been a good stay and this was our first experience of staying at a Mercure hotel. I doubt I would stay again.

Arrived mid afternoon to be told room was dirty! Assigned another room after waiting in cold bar area with a complimentary drink. New room was next to an open fire door which we shut. Bathroom had not been restocked with tissues (I had a streaming cold). All public areas remained very cold due to heating broken for our whole stay of 4 nights. Final night and next morning, heating in room failed! Conversely, hot water was scalding hot - shower and basin. Japanese shower was not working as intended as side sprays cold. Mould on ceiling very off putting. Fire alarm went off last morning for 3 mins, saw no staff.

A pleasant property poorly maintained and understaffed

Customer review rating 3.9/5

Christopher C. Business - 08/10/2019 AccorHotels review

The property is well-located and designed, but is in dire need of refurbishment. The shower in our room leaked, the corridors were poorly decorated and smelt damp, and damage from leaking plumbing was evident at several places along the corridors. Staffing levels in reception, bar and restaurant were limited, especially at busy times, and though staff were pleasant and helpful, they were clearly under pressure. Toiletries in the bathroom were out of stock, according to housekeeping staff, so supplies were not topped up.

Not up to standard

James W. Solo - 08/10/2019 AccorHotels review

There were a number of things which weren't up to the standard I would expect from a hotel of this size: The light switch inside the door of my room didn't work, so I had to fumble in the dark for the en suite light switch. The en suite sink was cracked. The hotel heating/ventilation system droned quite loudly 24/7 making it difficult to get to sleep. When the fire alarm went off, there were no staff around to steward the guests. There was no liquid soap in any of the dispensers in any of the three men's communal toilets.

The heating had failed in the bar and restaurant but Dan the waiter did his best running round with portable heaters. The music in the bar was grim, a high pitched female voice going over and over the same phrases. We were told that it had not changed for over a year. The dinner menu was disappointing being mainly pasta, pizzas and burgers. The staff were very good.

Eliza Couples - 03/10/2019 AccorHotels review

On arrival the receptionist was very pleasant and asked which evening we would be taking our dinner. We said the first night and asked if there was a coach party at all that night. She said there was, it was booked for 7 but it was only a small party and wouldn't really affect us. We were deciding whether to book 6 or 6.30 and she said it was only a small coach party and we didn't need to book a time. When we went to the restaurant at about 6 o'clock the restaurant was deserted a waiter did appeared and said we would have to eat in the bar. He brought us a brasserie menu, we said we had paid for dinner and should have the set menu, he said we each could have £22 worth of food off the full menu, we said that wasn't what we had paid for and insisted on the set menu which he did eventually bring to us. A bit later on more staff appeared and it looked like they were setting up some sort of self service in the restaurant but no visitors arrived till after 7. Before dinner I remembered I hadn't ordered a morning paper so I went to the receptionist and asked if they delivered papers, she said they did so I ordered the daily mail. This was Saturday evening and when we went to the bar we saw a pile of Friday's edition of the 'I' newspaper, assuming they didn't get them on a Saturday. When I got up at 7 I asked (presumably the night receptionist) what time the papers arrived and she said I should have been told I couldn't get one as the Metro had arrived and that was it. When we arrived back at teatime I asked another receptionist who said she'd put it on the list the day before and it should have been ordered and delivered, it had been a nice day so I said I would go out the following morning and get my own. I looked in the bar to see if there was an 'I' and the Friday edition was still there even though by now it was Monday. On Tuesday morning the 'I' had been delivered but it was pouring down so I had to go out in the rain to collect my daily mail. On Monday breakfast the orange juice didn't taste very nice but I put it down to the fact the hotel had been very busy for almost 2 weeks as the cycling championships were finishing each day in neighbouring Harrogate. There was lots of food out but the bacon looked dried up and the egg had been out so long the bottoms were hard and inedible On the second morning there was no orange juice at all and when I mentioned this to my husband the coffee shop man was just putting some clean glasses out and he showed no interest at all. The waitress that morning was Amelia who was very pleasant and the only person who seemed to be at all helpful during our stay. To cap it all on the morning we were leaving the toilet didn't fill then later on when I was making a cup of coffee before we set off there wasn't any water in the tap. When we went in the bathroom there was only a part toilet roll and nothing on the backup holder, so in the morning when I heard a cleaner in the corridor I went out and asked for another, she said she didn't have one and that I would have to go to reception for one, I then went to the receptionist and asked for one who said it wasn't her job but open a packet and gave me one.

Very good, no major issues.

I very rarely write reviews but this time I felt I had to. Reception was good, room was clean but bathroom needs serious refit, bar area old dirty chairs, restaurant understaffed and food overcooked when I received it. Given it was busy with the Police and cycling event it would have been prudent to have a few extra staff. Breakfast again needed more staff. I have stayed on a number of occasions before this, this stay was not worth the money.

In my opinion the hotel feels run down, the rooms are small and the walls are thin so you can hear entire conversations that the room next door is happening. The towels in the room had marks on them, the lamp on the desk had what appeared to be blood stains and one of the pillows was dirty. The room service menu was out of date as the restaurant menus had been updated but not the room ones therefore a lot of the choices were not available. All in all not a fantastic stay.
