« Pleasant stay for good price but needs updating »

Check in was easy, I did feel sorry for the lady on reception as she was the only one and between the phone ringing and guests at the desk, she was very busy. We used the gym which was relatively small but clean with lots of equipment, however fairly limited in the free weights section. Pool was smaller than expected but again clean, as were sauna and steam room. The room was nice and clean, duvets and pillows were really comfy, unfortunately mattress' were not! Could definitely do with a refurb but not anything I would complain about. Restaurant was nice and staff were very friendly and accommodating however I felt they were quite understaffed. Food was very average to be honest, wouldn't rush to eat there again and we had a long wait between courses. Breakfast buffet was good with plenty of choice. Overall I was satisfied with our stay but improvements would go a long way.

Arrived and thought I would have a coffee, waited 45 minutes then gave up. Went for dinner and waited 50 minutes for starter of bread, olive oil and balsamic vinegar, could of popped down to local shops and made it myself. The food was nice however took nearly 3 hours. Shame ruined stay.

« Hotel needs to focus on customer service and in desperate need of refurb »

Arrived to find no one on reception, stood for ten minutes waiting for receptionist to return. We were then advised the room was not ready at for check in, this being 14:15 and check in states from 14:00, we’d also been advised only 5 rooms booked that evening for our stay so why no room was available was to be questioned. Advised there would be no buffet breakfast instead it would be cooked to order. When we finally got into the room we had to place a towel round the toilet as it was leaking, doors rotten in bathroom, mound visible around windows. Dirty cup marks on the bedside table evident the room had not been cleaned. Attended breakfast the following morning, pastries were stale, yogurt was dried on the top been stood out too long, ordered our fresh breakfast made to order to which when it came out the beans had a burnt crusty top, sausages were raw in the middle, bacon was cold and the eggs were hard as though it had all been sat on a heat plate in the kitchen waiting to be plated definitely was not fresh to order. Stayed many times when visiting family but will not stay again. Completely disappointed!

As l stated in a previous email, the toilets (men’s) facing reception smelled really badly and the bread available at breakfast was almost rock hard stale; these were replaced quickly after l pointed it out with an immediate apology. On another occasion, a request for vegetarian sandwiches was requested and provided quickly, with a smile.

Rooms are generally comfortable. I tend to stop weekly and have had a variety of rooms. There are occasionally some cleanliness issues (had unpleasant white stain on bed throw, hairs in bath, kettle full of water) but nothing I would consider major. The single biggest complaint I have and it appears to make no difference what room I am in, is the quality of the showers. They are most frustrating and disappointing! Not sure if it's the water pressure or the shower heads, but having a shower is a lengthy experience as there is barely enough water coming out to wash soap/shampoo off! I have also been in 2 rooms where the telephone doesn't work or falls apart when you pick up the receiver!

Generally well up to Mercure standards of room etc. staff excellent very welcoming and ultra professional, they really care! Especially the restaurant and kitchen staff - lamb shank to die for! Couple of minor niggles, the shower seemed short on pressure and the loo was sometimes reluctant to flush, neither so severe as to warrant asking to swap rooms, mentioned them to staff on departure and they promised to have maintenance check them out - that's what we expect. My real grouse was the breakfast and lack of consistency across the estate, cereals and hot food great and plenty of it, my love of the Mercures especially Southampton is the great range of cold meats, cheeses etc as in Europe, this was conspicuous by its absence as were yoghurts, fresh fruit etc. I hope this is down to regional / local demand or management decisions and not becoming the norm or it will be a sad day for the chain. Otherwise as good as usual.
