Overall, we enjoyed our stay at the Grand Hotel in Leicester. The location in particular was one of the best that we have experienced. The room was comfortable but hanging space and generally storage for our possessions was a bit limited. We were a little disappointed with the breakfast in terms of the range of options available. This was our first experience of a Mercure hotel and we did not find that the breakfast matched previous stays in Ibis, Ibis Styles and Novotels. There were no cold cuts and the only specialty bread was a single baguette of dubious quality. We only used the hotel lounge on one occasion as we found it to be rather austere and unwelcoming, probably due to its size and a reflection of past glories!. The contrast with our previous stay in an Ibis Styles hotel in Glasgow was quite marked with the latter being modern but broken up into small units . In addition, there were complimentary beverages and pastries on offer all day.

We were upgraded due to a mishap with housekeeping, the room was fantastic, and the young receptionist could not do enough for us, Aiden behind the bar and Brianne at breakfast were also brilliant and very welcoming.

« Fabulous value, right in the heart of the city. »

The hotel has been beautifully renovated in both the rooms and the public areas. Being in the centre of town we could walk everywhere, leaving our car in the hotel carpark. It was a great stay, brilliant price for such a nice spacious room and large comfy bed. The only slight disappointment was the size of the bathroom. It was tiny and thus quite hard to use. Which bearing the size of the room it was a shame that it couldn't have been made bigger in the revamp. It would have been perhaps better to have replaced the bath with a shower in such a small space. Great stay, nonetheless.

« Would not let my dog stay here »

Not very friendly staff, the next morning I was embarrassed in front of other guests when we went for breakfast and they insisted I never paid for breakfast, which I did, how could they get this wrong when it was paid the same time as the room, the unfortunate thing is I have two rooms booked for three days in April for myself and friends.

Easy and fast check in with very helpful staff. I went to my room and discovered my radiator wasn’t working. I went to reception and she said she would find someone to take a look. After a few hours I went back down as I was getting quite cold. Reception gave me a tiny heater and said that should heat the room up. I went out for dinner and came back and the room was still cold. I went down again and they said they would try to find another heater. I asked if I could change rooms as I was cold and didn’t think an extra heater would help. We were able to move room and the radiator was working. Although eventually I was offered to move rooms, I felt that for the amount of money I had paid and the fact I was staying more than one night, they should have done more for me. Although they were helpful. Reception had also advised that I had somehow been booked in for an extra 2 nights although my booking confirmation confirmed I wasn’t. I was advised to check I hadn’t paid a deposit for that part of my stay and the lady fixed it on your system

« Generally disappointing with the service, quality of room, facilities, apparent poor staff training »

1. Room - iron not working, ironing board was so small and poorly located that it was hard to iron my shirt. 2. I called reception to request an iron. No one turned up. Later I called at reception - 25 minutes before I got an iron. Receptionist tried her best. 3. Toilet - not cleaned properly. I had to flush the toilet before could use it. 4. Shower - water pressure fluctuated throughout my morning shower. 5. Waited at reception for 5 mins, no-one turned up. 6. Later in the evening, receptionist was talking to a colleague at the bar and called over loudly to me from the bar area to reception asking how she could help. Hardly professional. Seems like the hotel is short-staffed.

The staff were friendly and the service was good. The upstairs bar - couldn't put drinks on the room. The lighting in the room was poor, could do with higher wattage bulbs by the mirror or in the bathroom. The food was adequate as the meat on the main course was tough.

Bath towel was slightly stained, bath tub had a hair in there already upon arrival; room was way too hot and if I opened the window I could hear the city centre noise. Noisy room to sleep in due to traffic/lorry deliveries outside.

The general assistant was very nice, I asked a question and the manager came in rather abruptly. I had a similar abrupt experience with her on checking out, I was a bit slow and she was quite irritated. The carpets are grubby and the paintwork and decor dated for the price

« A very ordinary and overpriced stay in a hotel that epitomises the phrase ‘faded glory’ »

1. It took nearly 10 minutes to get through on the phone to the Accor central reservations team 2. The main entrance into the hotel looks like the door of a downmarket pub 3. The ‘Privilege Room’ (joke) smelled of cigarette smoke and I had to call for some air freshener 4. The basin in the bathroom was nothing short of disgusting, with large rips in the enamel. Goodness knows what germs are lurking in them. The remainder of the bathroom was distinctly shabby. 5. The bedroom furniture was dated and tired. The window ledges were very gritty and dirty. 6. The food in Marcos was ordinary and overpriced for what it was, as was the wine 7. My original wine glass was dirty and the waiter did not take the cork out of the bottle of red wine at the table, so how was I to know that the wine was from a fresh, single bottle? 8. £160 was an awful lot to pay for a very ordinary stay in what is, frankly, a run-down hotel. I was grateful for the reduction off my bill that the receptionist gave me, but I would have preferred not to have encountered the various problems in the first place

« No central heating for the not acceptable. »

As above the central heating was broken but still took my money for an expensive room. If you know a room is not habitable on one of the coldest nights of the year you should have changed my room. Unacceptable
