The room was a bit tired. The carpet looked like it had better days. When a carpet is so stained and dirty the hotel should provide hotel slippers. Breakfast was nice overall. However the croissants and other pastries were stale. The tea pot I was given had jam all over it. Friendly service, but no attention to details from the staff.

The room was very comfortable, the staff were friendly and the breakfasts were tasty but the noise from the road outside was very loud and spoilt the experience for me.

Good Check in, Staff good, Room ok clean but dated, bed comfortable, wifi good, windows very dirty, very noisy outside on a Friday and Saturday night was awake to 3am each night with the noise.

Hello James, Thank you for the email and kind follow-up post my visit. Unfortunately I'll have to admit I was less than satisfied by the experience. There was a catalogue of errors, poor service and the room didn't live up to my expectations. I did report each of the incidents and I'm grateful for the reimbursement of the Sunday breakfasts but the whole level of service was poor resulting in spoiling my weekend. To catalogue the events: 1) Hotel room lighting - I could only turn on the the bedside lamps. A member of staff arrived to tell me "this is a known fault, been going on for ages, and you really need to know the sequences". I asked he explain, to which explained "the energy saving lightbulbs and the old wiring play havoc. You need to turn the off and on again I'm a sequence". My mind boggles as I watched him play with the lights to get two of the four lights working. 2) there was only sufficient towels for one person. Extra towels were needed, and dually brought to the room. 3) the Sunday morning breakfast is a catalogue of poor service, constantly requesting plates, food, cutlery and being virtually ushered to leave. My guest and I arrived at 10:15 having confirmed breakfast ends at 10:30. There was no bread, so we had to ask. There were no plates, so we had to ask. There was no milk, so we had to ask. There were no glasses or orange juice, so we had to ask. There was no plated for the cooked breakfast, so we had to ask. My guest asked for scrambled eggs to which a lady member of staff looked at her watch and walked away. I asked for more sausages, as there was only two. The member of staff said there was two. Which I replied my guest and I want two each. You said have one. I was not impressed so asked could I have some fresh sausages please as those two have been there some time by the look of them. The member of staff got animated, verbalised his disapproval and said I'd have to speak to the manager. Which I accepted and asked could he get him. 2 minutes later the manager came to me too assure me the sausages will be coming. I asked for the scrambled eggs, he assured they would arrive too. Bewildered, insulted and slightly annoyed my guest and I persevered with our breakfast - my guest actually wanted to leave. Immediately the scrambled eggs arrived so we started our food. Having eaten our food some 15 minutes later the manager arrived with four sausages. I advised we have eaten now. To which he apologized and adviced he would give me a refund for the food. I accepted and we went to our rooms to pack. Fellow guest too mocked the service and the experience. On check out I sort confirmation the refund was applied - yes it was I was assured. Overall, I was not impressed with my stay and will not regret to it in a positive light when asked. As an executive member of Affor I used my loyalty points to treat myself yet didn't get the good service I have be one accustomed too from their hotels. I'll seriously consider a trip advisor remark yet feel I need to temper the wording. Overall, not satisfied by my stay. Regards, Adrian

Certainly not the best stay. The reception staff on arrival and checking out were very uninspiring. The barman on Friday afternoon was off hand, when I asked if there was a problem he said he had a lot to do ! He also addressed me as mate. The room,504 was a disappointment. It was very dark and badly laid out. The bed was too close to the radiator, and not aligned to the tv. The chair did not look very fresh, in fact there was a strain of some kind on the foot stool. The wall next to the chair needed a repair to the plaster. The coffee making facilities could only be accessed by first opening the bathroom door ! There was no room safe.

Nice Hotel which requires a little bit modernization

The house has all prerequisites to become a Grand Hotel (as mentioned outside) again. For this a little modernization of the rooms is required. More important, however, is the training of the reception in providing a friendly service to customers.

Stayed in room 506, quite a nice room but shower does not work. Turned the shower on and stepped in and then the water ran out after a minute so not able to get washed off.

While the shared areas of the Mercure are opulent and engaging, with a good variety of seating in the lobby, attentive staff, and food which is perfectly acceptable, the luxuriant and grand atmosphere of the ground floor is not matched by the rooms themselves. Small, dark, and poorly organised, the bedrooms are uninspiring at best, and disappointing at worst. Staying for a business trip, I was disappointed that the wardrobe was near-impossible to see into due to the poor choice of lighting, and the consistent high-pitched whine of the television interrupted my quality of sleep the first night, until I managed to unplug it. The sash windows, which presumably are listed, have poor insulation, which is counteracted by double glazed internal windows. However, for some inexplicable reason, there is a 2-3 inch gap at both the top and bottom of the internal windows, counteracting what I would assume the purpose of the internal windows to be. Nothing hugely wrong with the room, but nothing to write home about either. Further, although I booked a two-night stay, and paid for the second night over the phone, being told that I would be asked to pay for the first night on my arrival, my credit card was actually charged without notifying me. Finally, there are clearly some issues with communication of details in the chain - I booked over the phone and specified my title as Dr, and my hotel as Leicester. The following day I received an email addressed to Mrs, and referring to my trip to Manchester. On check-in, my details registered as Mr. Small things, but enough to make the trip disappointing.

Disappointing. The public areas may be 4* but the rooms are not. Poorly lit with a very uncomfortable pillow .

The room was located quite close to the lift so experienced some noise late in evening with other guests talking loudly. Also my friend I was meeting who was also staying at the hotel said one of the reception staff was a bit rude.

Had to move bedrooms twice, initially 1st room overlooking front of hotel, very, very noisy. Given 2nd room at the back of the hotel, with air con extractors outside the window, very noisy. Reception every helpful at 01.00 to try to find a quieter room. 3rd room very nice, light and airy and modern compared to the first 2.
