« Overall a lot of money for a mediocre room »

I am a Silver Club Accor member and usually stay at the Ibis Leicester City when I have to work late at the University. My welcome there is always superb, and the rooms are identical and fairly simple, but comfortable. I was looking forward to a rather more luxurious experience at the Grand. I was disappointed. I was not sent an email as I normally am, in order to check in online ( I also had problems with the website so couldn't check in there). I arrived at around 9pm and of course understood that the receptionist could only offer me the rooms she had left. My welcome was reasonable, but no free drink was offered. My room was, as explained, designed for disabled people to use, which I didn't have an issue with. However, the room was badly-lit, with no lamps to soften the harsh ceiling lights, and the bed was not a double, but two singles pushed together, neither of which were comfortable. When I checked out the following morning - at 7 am so not an especially busy time at reception - I was not asked if everything had been okay. The only discussion I had with the receptionist was whether I wanted an invoice.

« Lovely lobby, staff and restaurant, rooms a bit tired. »

Overall the experience was great- staff attentive and helpful. Impressive lobby and good food in the restaurant. Just a shame that the rooms obviously need investing in- single pane sash or ill fitting windows and tired bathroom. Lots of scuffs on ill finished paintwork and doors. Having said that would defo stay again as all other factors superceeded room.

Practical location, clean room. Only 1 lift serving the Hotel guests was pretty unbelievable? Comfortable beds, the shower room and in particular the shower are not the best I've experienced, the water ran from cool to hot intermittently and the pressure was poor. Certain fixtures and fittings need addressing throughout this hotel. Not sure I would book to stay here again?

The room was on floor five tucked out of the way and was and odd shape. It was quite cold and featureless. There was no bath Breakfast was not included despite the room costing nearly £100 - I did not love it

« Tatty, old-fashioned, mis-sold and mis-advertised experience »

I copy here an email I sent earlier today to the Manager: FAO The Manager: On Saturday night I stayed in the Mercure Leicester. I booked via Expedia and decided to go for your hotel rather than several cheaper options as it was for a special occasion and I have always found Mercure hotels to be modern, classy, and everything is usually to the highest standard. Unfortunately I was extremely disappointed. The hotel is tatty and worn down, the carpets in the corridors are tattered, frayed and full of ripples and bulges. The room was old fashioned with a creaky floor, old wooden furniture that looked like it came from an old people's home, and an unclean and grotty bathroom. The room was sold as "room with a view" - the "view" was a white brick wall and window to another room directly opposite, about 2 feet away. The radiator could not be turned off so the window had to be left open all night, letting noise in. I could not sleep. When I switched on the TV it would not allow me to use it until I had personally gone into the settings and manually set the date and time myself (it asked me to do this before I could use it). The tea and coffee tray had no sugar. The cleaning staff attempted to enter the room at 10:30, 90-mins before my checkout time and I had to run naked to the door to ask them not to come in. The wifi barely worked and in the end I had to turn it off and use my mobile data instead. This was one of the worst hotel experiences I have ever had, it was mis-sold as a "room with a view" and not what I expect of a 4-star Mercure hotel. The room was 424. I would appreciate a response as soon as possible once you have investigated the quality of this room for yourself. Yours faithfully, David B.

« Comfortable and clean, but not value for money and needs an update »

I stayed in a privilege room, hoping to have a better stay and experience. Although the room was spacious and clean and the staff were very friendly, the facilities were not up to the price point of the room (£150). The sofa is worn out and needs to be replaced, the desk had no lamp for working, the bed was OK in terms of comfort, the bathroom is very small and shower not great for an upgraded room. I think I was literally paying for the extra square footage. There's no wardrobe just a hanging rail by the door. Comfortable for one night stay but I would have been disappointed if I'd stayed longer. I ordered room service which was disappointing. Although the food was edible, the pasta was delivered warm/cool and with no cover on the tray. The wine wasn't very nice

Friendly welcoming staff, clean bed, nice shower, easy access for my wife's wheelchair (room 312). Good location for shops and restaurants. We had theatre tickets for De Montfort which was within walking distance - another plus! A little noisy late at night with late night/early morning revellers and traffic but not a major inconvenience. Would definitely stay here again
