« Not up to usual Mercure standard - tired room and noisy plumbing »

I am a gold card member and regularly use Accor and Mercure. This stay was below usual standard. Room was tired, carpet stained and very cold. When I turned on radiator it only heated half way and then made loud clanging noises intermittently.

The longe, bar, restaurant and food were all lovely and the bed was very comfortable. However, the bedroom was poorly lit, the only window did not open, the central heating system was very noisy and the towel rail in the bathroom did not work. The bedroom could also benefit from a chest of drawers and more than 5 hangars in the wardrobe. We were on the top floor, with no hotel lift, which did not suit my wife who has painful knees.

There was no one on the reception desk on arrival & it wasn’t very easy to find any staff to help. We were an hour early decided to have a very expensive lunch while we waited (£24.00 for a fish finger sandwich, ham & cheese panini & one & half pints of cider). The food came with ‘salad’ of the tiniest proportions. 1 tiny lettuce leaf, 1 cherry tomato & the tiniest piece of chopped cucumber. Not impressed. Also, the drinks menu wasn’t correct. They didn’t stock the cider that was on the menu. Once we had eaten, we tried to check in again but were told the room still wasn’t ready. This was after the 2 pm checkin time. We were told by the receptionist that rooms could be ready from 2pm onwards! When we showed signs of displeasure at this comment, she found another room that was ready, telling us that customer hadn’t yet arrived. The room was very pleasant, with a pretty view. The downside was the bed. It was 2 beds pushed together, which at first glance, looked amazing. After retiring that evening, we discovered that’s exactly what it was, with nothing to mask the gap in the middle! Extremely uncomfortable if you happen to roll onto it in the night! There was no hotel information book at all, which would have been very useful as the staffs local knowledge was nonexistent. Breakfast was very good, with attentive and friendly staff. There was no problem with our checkout either. The overall impression of the hotel was that it looks amazing but there is no soul or charm. I can see why it is a perfect wedding venue as it is a striking looking building.

We stayed at the hotel as a result of being given a Virgin Experience voucher. (I would NEVER want or use one again) The staff at check in were very friendly and helpful . The room was large, clean tastefully decorated. The bed was very comfortable. the shower had a decent strength of spray and the bath was full size. The room was at the rear of the hotel and we could here the kitchen fans, we asked if these would be on all night but was told they go off at 10pm ,which they did but they turned back on at 5.20 am. Staff at reception where very apologetic , The breakfast had a good selection although some items were in short supply when we went for breakfast at 8.30, I would most definitely stay at this hotel again but not through Virgin Experience,

« Not the service I would expect »

My car was damaged in the car park overnight. I raised it with reception, well aware that the hotel does not take responsibility for damage caused. I received a one-sentence response from the operations manager after reviewing the CCTV, “I afraid that I cannot see any car bumping into your car in the Hotel car park on the camera’s”. No apology, no “if there is anything else we can do”, no “please don’t let this affect your opinion of Bowden Hall”. I have absolutely 0 recourse other than the assistance you can give and that’s all I get - one sentence with 2 mistakes in it. I reported it to the police, of course they’re not too bothered.

« A Hidden Gem! »

It took some finding, hidden in the woods away from the road and with no hotel sign to be seen! However once inside we were most impressed as the hotel looked as though it had recently been refurbished and we were allocated an excellent room on the top floor which exceeded our expectations. Dinner was the set menu or an allowance against the a la carte menu. We chose the limited set menu which we enjoyed and where the service was very good. Overall an enjoyable one night stay arranged at short notice.
