Enjoyed our stay. However we would point out that we were not happy with our room 244 As it was very noisy during the night even at 2am

« A very comfortable, excellent value two day break. »

We found the hotel staff particularly helpful and welcoming. Our room was really pleasant. Far better than staying in one of the large chain hotels. We found the breakfast good but would have liked a choice of hot breakfasts. However at such an excellent value price we really could not complain about that.

« Very efficient staff, very clean and spacious room »

Alex on reception was particularly helpful. Unfortunately on the second morning the breakfast was disappointing as the bacon was cold, plates hardly warm and only 1 egg left - apparently more were to following later!

« Stay spoilt by a viral infection »

We were impressed with the location and reception we were given upon arrival, dinner was well presented and tasty. But the guest beer recommended was not! By 4.00 am I was violently ill and as a result too weak to venture out the next day. Whether it was the food or other reason is not certain, my friend had the same experience the next day.

« Overpriced and underdelivered »

I have written a letter to the general manager detailing all our issues. Despite addressing the envelope to Mr Jones in person and adding "Personal" onto the envelope, I received a reply from the Operation Manager, Rachel Perry. The following is the text of my letter. "Dear Mr Jones, I would like to raise the following points regarding our recent stay at Bowden Hall Hotel from Friday 19 October to Monday 22 October 2018. Starting with the positive aspects: Reception staff excellent; Housekeeping excellent; air-conditioning/heating unit stunningly efficient and the ambience of hotel is great. We were really pleased until our evening meal which is where the negative aspects commenced. As the hotel was really busy, we were unable to have a table until 9pm this was not a problem. We were offered two menus and advised that some items were unavailable: these included my husband’s first choice of Cumberland Scotch egg and my first choice of duck as a main course. I ordered a 250ml glass of wine at £9.00, the volume seemed closer to 175 ml and for that price it was a very mediocre wine but the menu offered a very limited choice of both wines and beers. On our second night we were able to book a table for earlier in the evening and I expected that shortage of items experienced on the previous night would have been resolved. We were only offered one menu on this occasion and again several of our first choice items were unavailable. I chose Lobster soup which was served without a soup spoon which I had to request.  As the soup was served in a large flat bottomed bowl in a very thin layer, it was quite cool by the time the requested spoon arrived. At a price of £9.00 with no accompanying bread it seemed rather expensive considering the issues described above. As my husband’s first choice of Cumberland Scotch egg was unavailable again, he opted for asparagus with poached egg. The yolk was solid which was most disappointing. My main course choice of duck was again unavailable so I opted for chicken wrapped in pancetta. This had one very small and unsealed piece of pancetta, a rather disappointing offering. My husband did enjoy his fish and chips; however, we were not offered any sauces although other tables were offered sauces. When we received the bill we noticed that we had been charged for three starters. The Scotch egg was unavailable but had not been deleted from the bill. Also service charge had been added on this occasion. Our excellent waitress resolved both issues. We were not alone in experiencing issues in the Restaurant. A diner on an adjacent table ordered sticky toffee pudding which arrived with a very small jug containing a miniscule volume of toffee sauce. She had to request a more reasonable volume, meanwhile her dessert cooled. Another diner had a dessert where he was given a spoon much too large for the circumference of the dessert container; again he had to request and wait for a more appropriately sized spoon to be brought. On our third night the large door to the outside of the Restaurant had been left open so the restaurant was cold and draughty. A very limited choice menu was deposited on our table with no explanation. I asked for the second menu and was told that as so many items were unavailable the servers were told only to offer the single menu. This was a different three course fixed price menu from the one offered on the first night. This was a choice of three starters, three mains and three desserts; however, I don’t want three courses. Even then the pudding option was incorrect. We asked to speak with the Restaurant Manager who appeared quite dismissive about the limited choice and explained there was a new menu to start on the following day which was the reason for the extremely limited choice. At breakfast on Monday I asked to view the new dinner menu but was given the menu we received on the first night. Only when I questioned this did the member of staff say there would be a new menu that night and they were waiting for these to be delivered. Many guests did not have a car so would have no choice but to eat at the restaurant. We chose a hotel with on-site restaurant so neither of us had to drive. Each day during breakfast items were not replenished quickly and during both dinner and breakfast tables not always cleared which isn’t pleasant. The tables were not always laid with full cutlery, and no teaspoons were provided for eating the yoghurt so we had to use those from the coffee cups. This is not very helpful for guests taking sugar and/or milk. Given the limited options on our final night we decided to find an alternative venue to eat. Unfortunately for Bowden Hall Hotel we found a nearby Premier Inn and Brewers Fayre restaurant. As an exercise in comparison, at the Brewers Fayre we chose from the much wider selection: chicken Liver Pate £4.99; smoked haddock fishcake £4.99 followed by smothered chicken £9.29 and lamb shank £10.99 so our food first choices amounted to £30.26. I had a glass of McGuigan cabernet sauvignon from much wider range of choices at £4.99 for 250ml and my husband had a bottled beer for £3.69 giving a total of £38.94. The fixed price menu at Bowden Hall Hotel was £44.00, not including beverages, for items which would probably not have been our first choices and desserts we did not wish to eat. Not surprisingly we would now opt to stay at the Premier Inn and eat at Brewers Fayre cheaper and better with more reliable food choices. I would appreciate your comments regarding these detailed concerns."

« A pleasant and comfortable stay in a quiet location »

We were disappointed that there is no lift and we were allocated a room on the third floor. Had we known this we would have requested a room on a lower floor. However our room was comfortable, clean and quiet and provided everything we needed for a short stay. Our request for the bedding arrangements was in place when we arrived which was much appreciated. The staff were friendly and service was good in both the bar and the restaurant. Dinner in the restaurant was expensive: both the beef wellington and the steak pie were disappointing; the cooked breakfast was not kept sufficiently hot and we had to wait for replenishment of some items.

« Nice location nice big room. Poor view. Difficult local roads »

It was a pleasant stay. Nice hotel . Welcoming staff. I was a little confused on the final bill on leaving. I had paid for 2 nights bed and breakfast + dinner for one night. But checking the receipt when back home didn't, understand the final figure. I was asked if everything was in order on leaving. I failed to pay attention at that point and said yes. So fair play I let it go.

As I had checked online for comments regarding the hotel, it turned out to be about what I expected. Ladybugs and stairs (no elevators). Had I not known these things beforehand, I would likely not have appreciated them. The hot breakfast was also a disappointment, eggs generally over cooked. Just ordinary overall! We were however pleasantly surprised by the quality of the one dinner we had on-site. Beds were also comfortable and hotel’s location beautiful. A worn “Grande Dame” just not making it in today’s world unless something is done. As we were there for a specific reason, it did the trick but it would not have been my first choice.

« Good and bad experience. »

The plus : Wonderful nature and surrounding especially the green yard and little river in front of the hotel with duck family, we were allowed to walk in too. Our 2 years old son was very happy. good breakfast (food, varieties, staffs) and welcome drink menu (can choose anything from the menu including alcohol beverages- wines, liquor, cocktails - even though we only choose chocolate and coffee) The minus : Must have a car to get there because the remote location. Poor cellular signal, two separate faucets in the basin one is very hot, other is very cold, hardly to use The room is the disappointed part. No upgrade, No welcome letter, Have to ask twice and insist for an in room complimentary bottles of water, first one was make a called and nothing happen, the second one is to walk down by myself to the reception and ask for them. Just only one set of towel for three people. I found the spare set in the closet with weird smell. And our room was located on the farest part of the building and on the third floor. Very inconvenient because we are a family with toddler. No baby cot as requested. Ps1 : your wedding package is very interesting. Ps2 : your blood pudding is good.

« Accommodation and wedding reception lovely »

We were welcomed by a lovely lady who informed us that she hadn't been working at Bowden hall long and was learning the processes. She was very polite. She lead us towards our room with was very spacious and welcoming. We were at Bowden hall to attend an evening wedding reception. The room looked lovely. Bar prices are rather high, but this is expected at a hotel wedding reception. Me and my husband both sort well. It was not obvious when we came down to breakfast, if we had to wait to be seated or not as there was no staff member by the door. It must have been the busiest time as there were no plates, bowls or glasses available for a short amount of time. And we had to ask for cutlery (maybe this wouldn't have been necessary if we had waited to be seated) However the food was lovely. We both had some of the full English items. I had some fresh fruit and my husband had some pastries. A lovely stay. Breakfast maybe could be slightly better organised.
