« Over rated and over priced »

This is NOT a 4* Mercure hotel: it's a tacky commercial hotel on an industrial estate. We paid above the already expensive price for a privilege room - and the privilege was a view over empty sheds. The room was perfectly comfortable and clean but no better than we would have got at a Travelodge. We'd clearly got a mixture of 3 different phases of décor: the red and green squares on the carpet sort of matched the tartan curtains but contrasted with the ethnically woolly orange and yellow bed cover and cushion - which again contrasted with the metallic silver and black wallpaper. The framed pictures of Norwich were actually quite nice... The big problem was that the windows didn't open at all. There was air-con, and fortunately it wasn't too noisy as we had to sleep with it on but the temperature was pre-set and we couldn't vary it. When we woke the windows were covered in condensation: this is just not healthy! I had several moments in the night when I felt quite claustrophobic because there was no fresh air coming into the room. Hotels are always so keen to tell how "green" they are, and how we save the planet by not wanting clean towels every day - so how about some more planet-saving through using fresh air instead of air-conditioning?? The bathroom was clean but dated, with pitted chrome, badly-fitting basin plug, toilet flush that needed coaxing every time, poor extraction - and a shower curtain! Have hotel chains not heard yet about those nice things called screens that don't cling to you while you're showering? The hair dryer was one of those pre-historic ones with a switch that has to be held down all the time: not good for arthritic hands (NB to hotel chains: your client base is getting older so please bear in mind our increasing lack of mobility). I tried to ignore the fact that according to its label it last passed its electrical test in 2008... We'd planned to eat in the restaurant but when we went down at 7.30pm it was completely empty. Probably because it was so expensive. We went to the Wetherspoons pub just up the road instead. It was clear that many guests used room service (presumably they were on expenses) as the corridors were cluttered with unsightly and smelly food trays left outside rooms. Breakfast was mediocre: the quality of the precooked food was poor and there was no offer of cooked-to-order food which I would have expected in a 4* hotel, and coffee was help yourself from a machine. The staff were friendly and efficient to a point. Our complimentary morning newspaper caused them some difficulty: had no-one ever had one before? Did none of the reception staff think to write our room number on the paper before it disappeared into the ether? We were really ripped off here!

« Nice base for visiting the area »

Room was pleasant enough with all the facilities you could want for a short stay. Only had one meal in the hotel restaurant which was nice enough. There was one thing which marred the occasion in the restaurant, a guest was having a meal with his laptop and mobile phone on the go. I could forgive this in the bar but feel that the restaurant should be for dining only not working.

« A very disappointing stay, and no follow up to deal with the issues »

A group of family members had booked in for the weekend in order to attend a wedding locally. In no particular order the issues were. 1. My mother aged 96 arrived with her carer after a 5 hour drive. They were not allowed into their rooms until full payment had been taken - despite the fact that the bookings were clearly made under my name and guarenteed by a card via Booking .com 2. having arranged dinner at 7.30 , advised that we would have to move to 7pm due to a large party needing feeding. Hustled out of bar, without getting drinks, then waited 45 minutes in restaurant before getting the correct number of drinks for 11 people. The Beer was off and I had to return to bar to change. 3. Waiter came to take order after 3 reminders. Asked what soup of day was - had to go to kitchen to ask. Asked what fish of day was - ''might be plaice - but I'd better go and ask'' turned out to be Sea Bream or Sea Bass we never did determine which. 4 Starters arrived - pretty filthy - missing 3. After 20 minutes and 2 reminders eventually got remaining starters - crab cakes .....Potato with a sniff of crab at the most. 5 Main courses arrived except 3 (of which two had been added late by us) Frankly the food was disgusting. My Mothers Gammon was so tough and overcooked that I had to cut it into chunks and she struggled to eat it. My sister in laws Lamb (requested rare) was so overcooked, and the burgers were dried out. The 3 bream or bass eventually arrived just as we were finishing. In summary this was the most disgusting restaurant mennu I can ever remember. The staff at the hotel were keen to try and help, but basically to young and too stretched. Absolutely appalling that the general manager does not come into the hotel from Friday to Monday - when the hotel was fully booked - what a way to manage. Mix up on the bills the following day, eventually sorted. Papers ordered for Sunday - totally forgotten - I could go on. Basically this hotel is geared up for contract oil rig staff and not members of the public - as demonstrated by the housekeeper who , when I asked if I could have a bottle of water in our room, replied that she was sorry but only contract rooms got water - and we are paying over £100 per night and have 20 people staying. Fine they did credit us for some costs - but 20 people staying for 2 nights and 5 staying for 3 is a pertty huge bill when the service is so awful. Final insult is that having spoken to Nadine, receptionist on departure, I was advised to call GM Stuart Collins who was aware of our issues and wanted to receive our feedback. So I called him and left a message on his mobile . I havent had the courtesy of a call back 3 days later

« Stay in Norwich Mercure »

The Norwich Mercure is a rather tired 1970s hotel characterised by the two half eaten tatty flags flying from the roof. Guests were greeted by smokers smoking under the front canopy. My wife had to resort for the first time in her life (she was a caterer) to sending her meal back because of value for money and the cooked state of the food. Having said all this the breakfasts were good and the staff friendly and generally helpful. This was disappointing to us because we have previously been very happy with Mercure Hotels abroad. The carpet in the room was rather debatable and detracted from the quality of service that the staff were trying to provide.

« Bad check in »

We had email correspondence with the hotel before hand who informed us we could pay for an early check in, £20, we arrived and the room wasn't ready we were told we could leave our bags! Weee happy to still charge the £20, eventually another room was found, the two receptionists on duty were unhelpful and dismissive, we was also told the hotel could book taxi's for us but when we asked them to the receptionists gave us a card to call ourselves, we did and was told we had been misinformed as they weren't booking taxis that day, we had a three and a half mile walk to the venue we was going to and the same back, the room was only half prepared, no towels and very hot.

Overall the stay was very good. The heated bathroom with no option to turn down the heat was a bit much on 33 degree day!!!!

« Pleasant, however food needs attention. »

Reception attentive and helpful. Ambience was nice in bar and restaurant. Air-conditioning was poor, not cool enough and facing the wrong was so couldn't feel the cool air. Restaurant was poor, I ordered the 'signature cod cakes', which was more like baby food, considering it was £7, I was expecting a proper fish cake. Checkout easy and team was helpful when my in-room iron didn't work.

« It was not as nice an experience as my last two visits »

I had a noisy room , no. 99 above what sounded like a bar area, the hallway was too warm , my room was a standard room in a corridor full of guests working nights

« Very comfortable, but too noisy on ring road; therefore had to shut windows, but then too hot as no aircon. »

See above. Also some signage around & outside the hotel was confusing.

The staff were really good at reception, but the communal areas, and the bar were just awful. Breakfast was not great either. Would not stay ever again

« Rooms are clean but some areas could do with updating »

The best part of my stay was the clean rooms and bedding even though some of the carpets are getting a little thread bear. My biggest disappointment was in the bar was having to wait for food when on some occasions took over 30 minutes and I feel sorry for some of your staff bringing out the food as they do not know who has ordered the food if you had numbers on the table like a lot of other places do then your staff would know which table to take the food to . Also if you have someone behind the bar they should stay behind the bar not serve food as on many occasions there is nobody there to serve drinks which leads to a lot of people waiting to order food and drink and after working for 14 hours or more this is the last thing we need is to wait for long periods of time to get served.
