« We were so disappointed »

We had a filthy towel plus there was only one between two of us . The breakfast was very substandard to say the least, The evening meal took over an hour for a burger. The only plus was the reception first class sorting the issue out about the filthy towel although we still came home a day early Needless to say we will not be booking the hotel again .

Staff very efficient and friendly. The hotel could stand having a makeover. Room 5 was ok but dowdy. Bathroom needs a little TLC. Corridor to room gave me a dingy 1970s experience.....unwelcoming and cold. Hotel needs some money spending on it and needs doing up. Breakfast was good. Overall experience was disappointing and not worth the money.

I enjoyed my stay with you - the rooms were satisfactory, the food excellent, and the staff friendly and helpful. One 'moan' - I chose you because in the Superbreak brochure you stated that you had a cathedral, castle, shops etc 'on our doorstep'. I suggest that two and half miles out of town is hardly 'on our doorstep', and that claim is, at best, misleading.

On arrival 10 minute wait at desk as family before us had been allocated incorrect rooms and although 3 staff around only 1 poor lady working the check-in. 4 people joined the queue behind us. Large Christmas display in foyer advertising Christmas. Our double room was miles away down a draughty corridor that desperately needs renevation. Went through doors to cold brick stairwell very uninviting had to go down several flights of steps to find our corridor I would not have wanted to go down there on my own as felt very vulnerable. Large vomit shaped stain on floor outside our door and tray with old food on it outside another door. Room was really in need of tlc. Wardrobe area chipped and plaster coming away. Stain on carpet next to bed. Stain on duvet cover. Housekeeping had left the room very clean apart from tissues in waste bin. We had no time to say anything on our way out as we were late for a reservation. On returning I spoke to the same lady on check-in who was very professional with the way she dealt with our disappointment. She moved us immediately to a suite. Much more comfortable and again had been cleaned to a good standard. However the fridge cupboard would not shut and fridge door caught on cupboard door and pulled whole fridge forward so needed 2 hands to open and Nespresso machine needs resetting as had to push button 5 times to get a coffee. Breakfast was ok but fried eggs and tomatoes had clearly been under the heater for a while as were wrinkly and dry. We were very disappointed. We were visiting our Son at university for the first time and very rarely stay in hotels as they are so expensive. This was a surprise from my husband for me and was very upsetting. The whole building needs to be renovated inside as was all very tired 1990s with frayed carpets everywhere and dated bedroom furniture. It was not a matter of not being to our taste but general ware and tear and lack of upkeep. The staff we encountered were very friendly and professional and made the whole experience bearable. We most definitely will not be using Mercure Hotels again. I looked at tge website when we got home and it is very misleading. It paints a very different picture to the reality. The industrial site drive up should have told us. Usually I'm not one to complain but feel in this instance it is very justified. It is not a cheep overnight stay and breakfast is extra. Certainly not worth the money and definitely not a romantic night away. I dont wish anybody to have the same experience.

« Ok but a bit grubby and disorganised. »

The room was ok. Breakfast was great. Loved the pool. However the general condition of the place was run down and a bit dirty. The staff reacted well to any requests but were not proactive. They need managing by someone who cares. It’s a bit Faulty Towers I’m afraid but could be so much better with a good manager.

« Accommodation good but food poor. »

On arrival staff were friendly and helpful. Our rooms were clean and comfortable. Breakfast in the morning was nicely cooked and enjoyable. Our evening dinner experience was our worst ever. Friday evening there was only 7 other people dining but we waited nearly an hour for fish, chips and mushy peas. My peas were cold and the chips not much warmer. Saturday evening we chose the chefs signature, Lamb stew which was served in a small dish. Meat was so tough almost inedible, half of mine was gristle. Not good enough for a 4* hotel.

The hotel was ok, I realy think the rooms look dated and the pictures on the website look a lot better than the one we stayed in. When we approached the hotel reception there was people smoking directly as you walk in you realy need a dedicated smoking area not right in the entrance area to the hotel not a good first impression. The price you pay you would expect better value

« Good location for onward travel but dated »

Welcomed nicely at check in. Room ok but chairs missing compared to website photos. Whole hotel dated and it felt lkke walking around uni halls of residence. Was hoping for nice quiet couple of hours in bar but it was pretty taken over by the largd groups of men clearly staying on work contact. Due to bright lighting, dated decor and acoustics this was really noticeable. Not what I expect from mercure hotel.

Arrived late evening, check in not too bad. Went to the allocated room only to find the room was already occupied. Returned to reception only to be told 'oh looks like they changed your room number on file but not on the room key card', that was all. Then jokingly said let's hope that one is ok! This also happened to one of my colleagues the same evening.
