friendly staff. Confusing menu instruction at reception and what a silly time to get your guests to make decisions when all we generally want is to get to our room after either a car journey or even a flight and car journey as in our case. Keep it simple to check in. Interesting eggs at breakfast, nor sure if they were fried or poached, looked and moved like plastic, did not taste.

After an enjoyable Remembrance Concert at the assembly halls in Tunbridge Wells, we decided to complete the experience with an overnight stay in The Mercure Hotel.Our choice of hotel was based on 1st its good location on the edge of the Town and the former reputation of the Accor Brand.

Unfortunately a wedding reception was held in the hotel and the music was rather loud. A noisy floor board outside our room was heard each time someone walked past. Not the end of the world, but it did detract from a good stay, we did inform the receptionist.

I was a bit disappointed to be honest. We were expecting a spa hotel and there was only 3 beds by the pool, the steam room wasn't working, there wasn't a jacuzzi and the pool was cold and dirty. The room was nice enough and the restaurant staff were lovely although I found the food to be a bit disappointing. There was a big function on in the room next door so maybe that didn't help.

The overall experience was very good. The staff were all helpful and friendly. The breakfast was very well done and relaxed. The room was clean and pleasant. The only negatives I have were that the bathroom was a bit tired and the room was quite a distance from the bar and restaurant with steps that we found difficult with our cases.

The bedroom that we stayed in (264) was completely unacceptable - the wallpaper was peeling from the walls, the bath had mould around the edge, the curtain had a rip, and the window did not close. When walking in to the room from the bathroom, the double bed covers 2/3 of the door which meant the light had to be switched on or else walk into the edge of it. I understand that sometimes rooms are tired and need an upgrade and yes the furniture and soft-furnishings were dated but that matters far less if the room is in good repair which this was not. Breakfast was just about edible; the bacon had a texture of ceramic tiles, eggs were incredibly greasy, tomatoes were raw, I’m pretty certain that the orange juice has never seen an orange, and the toaster catapulted the toast across the room. The only good thing at all was that the reception staff were polite. Honestly one of the worst rooms I have ever stayed in - anywhere.

We did not feel the experience was worth the amount we paid for two nights. The room was not very clean, there was a huge spider web on the wall, very bad screws in the wall of the bathroom handle, wallpaper coming off in the room and marks all over the wall. The room next door has tape placed over where a light switch had obviously been removed.
