« Very comfortable room »

This hotel has been visited by me on a number of occasions. Staff are friendly, and the room has a very comfortable bed. TV is modern and tea and coffee available in the room. Although you do have to pay for it Breakfast is excellent with a wide choice of options available to you from 6.30 in the morning. If working in and around the Tunbridge Wells / Pembury area, I would certainly recommend this hotel

« Mixed feelings about stay »

I had seen previous reviews about the hotel being a little tired looking and generally i dont stay at a hotel with a rating under 8. I think Mercure Tunbridge Wells is rated 7.5 on booking.com. That said I have an open mind and am aware customers expectations are often wildly varying. Check in was fine and i was welcomed to the hotel. I was allocated room 136 on the ground floor. The room was clean although a little tired looking. There was a slight musty feeling which could easily be remedied with a plug in air freshener. The bed was huge. I personally wouldnt have sat on the sofa 1) because although clean it still gave the impression is was old and dirty (possibly the colour) and 2) it needed bolster cushions because the actual seating was way too low to the floor. Bathroom was clean and everything worked fine but again ripe for refurbishment. I was booked in for dinner at the restaurant for 7.30. Prior to that I went for a swim in the pool (my only swim of the three night stay). Communal changing areas should be banned. It really is not a case of all girls together. It is awkward situation for most and not least when small children are also changing for swimming lessons and both girls and boys are present with their mother. Some ladies may have had surgery and might be body conscious, just as others may prefer some privacy whilst changing. No shower facilities in the changing rooms is also an inconvenience. The building in which the swimming pool is house is lovely but the pool design is all wrong. I swam a few lengths getting splash by excited children jumping into the pool encouraged by their swimming instructor. The decking some of the parents of the children were sitting on by the poolside is quite obviously a jacuzzi gone wrong and capped. The steam room looked like an after thought but was extremely good. I didnt quite get the round pool and it encroaches too much into the pool making narrow space to get in either side and awkward shape for swimming lengths. I was personally disappointed that the pool is shut around lunchtime for school use, but more so that nearly a dozen children were there having swimming lessons. But I got the impression that there may have been a membership scheme as two people in the steam room were having a conversation about a reciprocal scheme with another facility if the pool is out of action, just as it had bern recently (something to do with sand in the pool). Their conversation went on to discuss "invariable" problems with either the steam room or pool. Following my swim it was back to the communal changing rooms with no showers. I didnt use the facilities again during my stay. Back at the restaurant i decided to order the steak. I believe the most expensive item on the menu but reasonably priced for a hotel. The description of being 28 days aged ribeye got my attention and i ordered a black peppercorn sauce to accompanying it. 230g uncooked weight is 8 oz steak in my book. At that weight you would reasonably expect it to be the star of the show. When my plate arrived and the waiter asked if i needed anything else i really wanted to say "yes, a steak!". Possibly the steak shrunk after a month of ageing and poor chef had tried to hammer it out to at least make it visible on the plate, i am not sure. The peppercorn sauce was just a beige watery milk-like affair which gave the impression it hadnt been near a peppercorn in some while. Already disappointing arranged on a large plate of emptyness, the flattened mushroom was hidden under a grilled tomato bomb. The twice cooked chips were amazing. I can forgive the wait for my glass of prosseco ariving and i can forgive not receiving a glass of water until well after my meal has arrived, but i cannot forgive a most underwhelming steak dinner at £26.50 inc the sauce being over in three minutes. It took me longer to eat the chips than it did the rest of the dish. As i was on a dinner bed and breakfast rate i simply said i would not pay for the sauce and hoped the following nights meal would be better. After deliberating and still feeling hungry i decided to nip to tesco at 10 o'clock to get something to eat. I ended up with a scotch egg and a salad. Back at the room around 10.45 i was preparing myself for bed when an almighty eruption occured either in the pipes of the hot towel rail or the boxed in downpipes behind. The noise was so loud and prolonged i checked outside my door to see if any other guests had been startled by it. After no answer from reception on the telephone, i went down to reception and i requested a change of room which was happily accommodated. On arriving back at the room to pack up my things, the noise had stopped. The new room, a family room on the second floor was nice as i was able to have the window open without the same concern i had about possible burglary on the ground floor if i left the window open. At 11.15 and after a long tiring day I fell into bed only to not be able to sleep as there was no give in the mattress. I know everyone prefers different firmnesses of mattress but for me with diabetes and suffering nerve damage i needed something to take the pressure off my limbs. Breakfast in the hotel was lovely. All the staff i found pleasant and accomodating. My meal in the restaurant on the second night was much improved and chef certainly knows how to make a burger. As other reviewers have said, the hotel is tired and in desperate need of refurbishment. I personally would say the second room i stayed in 262 should be the quality of the ground floor room of 136, and that the upstairs rooms and suites are upgraded further. I would also prefer exclusive use of the pool for guests only, but that is just my preference. The morning of check out i did not have breakfast and instead opted for a lie in. But at 10 o'clock there was knocking at the door for room cleaning. Again at 11.15 a knock comes at the door whilst i was preparing for my departure but after the second knock i felt a sense of urgency to leave. Check out was smoothish with just a query on the bill as the DBB rate had not been applied to second and third nights and the peppercorn sauce had not been removed from the bill. I went with and open mind but left with mixed feelings. The outside of the hotel is stunning. The inside is tired and really needs a full refurbishment. I saw a couple of painters touching up the odd wall but it really needs more. All the staff were lovely and very accomodating. But i dont think that would be enough for me to return, which is sad because the location is spot on for visiting the surrounding areas and right next to the hospital. I hope you accept my comments as constructive critacism and by no means a complaint. Best wishes.

See below an email I sent yesterday to the General Manager complaining about the lack of contact and customer service. Unsurprisingly he didn't bother to send a response, What chance has any customer got!!! Hi Nathan I left my iPhone charger and lead plugged in next to the hair dyer. On my return home that evening my wife rang the hotel to ask if it could be forwarded on. Your staff member said they would call back in 30 minutes, after 1 hour my wife rang again. The person this time said the would call the next morning. This afternoon my wife rang again the person this time said it hadn't been handed in. This is not the best of service the only person in the room after me would have been the house keeper, he or she would have found the charger and handed it in to reception to pass on the customer. Unlucky for me not in this case. Disappointing Thanks Sent from my iPad

« OK didnt find the staff helpful at all »

Staff come across negatively, we booked and paid for 16 rooms but our guests are still being asked for credit details upon arrival. Staff in bar more interested in how your going to pay rather than serving. Rooms are becoming tired

« Very good three nights, everything clean and working well and cheery and polite staff. »

All well except for the fact that myself and two friends paid for four nights, with breakfast and dinner included. I had to cancel our last night owing to a death and we have not received our refund. I cancelled our final night in plenty of time before our visit. Hope to hear from you shortly .

It was amazing! It was my husbands birthday and your staff really helped to make it special from the receptionist to the waiter we had. they are a real credit to your business. Even the guy who brought our breakfast to our room outstanding service! I'm very happy with the service and I can be hard to please!

Hotel is looking tired in the reception area and also the bathroom needs tidying up as there is a lot of black mould around the bath We had our sons wedding reception there and we were very disappointed with the top table tablecloth which was very scruffy and could have done with a good iron, when we mentioned this to the staff we were told that is how it comes in from the laundry which we were not very impressed with considering the amount of money that we had paid for the day. The food was excellent and staff service during the meal was also excellent

« Weekend Break »

Our stay at the Tunbridge Wells Hotel was great! I was apprehensive after reading some of the reviews on Trip Adivsor, but was not disappointed. Our rooms were clean, nicely decorated and good pillows on the bed! The swimming pool and spa facilities were good. Our evening meal was lovely, good service and lovely food. Breakfast was also more than adequate with plenty of choice. I dont know why people were giving it such a bad slating! Yes, its not as polished as some hotels, and could probably do with a refurb, but nowhere was dirty and some painting had obviously been taking place. The staff, throughout our whole experience, were pleasant, helpful and always smiley! What more do you need. Would recommend to others and will definitely go back.

« My stay »

The room we thought was a little tired, particularly the bathroom. The bed was extremely comfortable and large. The breakfast room was a delight. The breakfast was lovely except that it wasn't very warm. The receptionist was very friendly. The girl with the long blonde hair at breakfast was miserable.

Bedroom OK although noisy - food & drink grossly overpriced. (small portions with nil taste) On arrived I presented my debit card to enable me to charge items to my room for one final bill on departure to find that an amount had been taken with my consent and told the balance would be paid back into my account with 14 days - unbelievable. I will never return to this place.
