My parents booked us a night away as we have a toddler at home which doesn’t sleep well , unfortunately you had a wedding at the hotel that night and twice we had to phone reception to ask them to ask guests that stood outside our room to keep noise down

Not 4 star. Staff were very nice and helpful. Room was OK, Bed and shower were good. Restaurant service was very slow. Food was fine. Breakfast was good. Main problem was coldness - in bar, reception, restaurant, all public areas. Disappointed that no reply has yet been received to email to manager about doors.

The first room we were offered (131) was terrible. It was old, tatty and generally of a very low quality. The second room (252) was a privilege room and was much better although still not of the same quality as rooms I have stayed with at other mercure hotels. However, the girl who we spoke to on reception was excellent. She was helpful and went above and beyond what would be her usual expected level of service. I feel sorry for her having to deal with guests staying in a hotel so desperately in need of substantial renovation. She is the only reason we did not leave the hotel and stay at another local hotel.

Overnight stay for a wedding

We found that the room smelt damp. The whole room and especially the bathroom needed to be updated. We were unable to open the window to give the room some much required fresh air. The lights that did work were incredibly dim. The fan in the bathroom did not work and therefore the bathroom and consequently the room was very steamy.

Disappointed that the jacuzzi wasnt working and the lack of loungers around the pool as we had booked to have a relaxing break in the 'spa'.

Overnight stay only unfortunately. Room was lovely, clean and well presented. Beds were very comfortable. Pool area good quality, although no proper showering facilities for afterwards. Restaurant and bar menus and facilities were also good. Overall lovely hotel and would have liked to stay longer.

Check in at reception was ok. Room (109) was comfortable and well equipped, but a little noisy as it is one of the nearest rooms to reception and everybody else has to walk past to get to their room. Food was of a reasonable standard, but the reception and bar area were a little cold. Breakfast was excellent, and the member of staff in the breakfast room was very friendly and welcoming. check out was fast and efficient.

Hotel needs updating

The hotel feels very tired and old fashioned. The room had insufficient natural light and also had very heavy dark furnishings and curtains which didn't help. Unfortunately the corridors had an unpleasant smell of stale cooking. The room tea/coffee making facilities were extremely limited and we had to ask for more tea bags and some fresh milk. There were no complimentary biscuits, so we had to go to the local supermarket to buy these. The only shower was over the bath and the Bathroom felt pretty shabby. A walk-in shower would have been more useful. The bed was perfectly comfortable and despite there being a wedding party in the hotel, it was very quiet and we slept well. The breakfast was a self service buffet and we liked the fact that this was available until 10.30.

The restaurant closed too early, we were advised we could eat in the bar area stating we could order off of the same menu as the restaurant provided. Disappointing as staying with you was a gift from friends for our Ruby wedding anniversary. Unfortunately, limited choice for a vegan so I chose a vegetarian burger this was extremely poor and the actual burger was almost cold and the chips were over done. My husband chose the Lamb dish which he said was ok as he was hungry but only ate half of his meal I only took a couple of bites of mine. When the bar chap came to take our dishes away he said was everything alright I actually said no it was not the burger was cold and the whole dining experience was not pleasant he said he would let the Chef know. No one came near to offer an alternative or provide an apology. The following morning I was up early and went to the pool to use the facilities, there was no-one at the reception to find out when the breakfast finished so when I got back to the room I telephoned reception where I received no answer initially and I had to ring a third time to be informed I couldn't have breakfast in my room but the restaurant was just about to close and if I hurried there might be something left over. I then asked if I could order off the room snack menu he was not sure what was vegan I said I would have a look and call back. It took 4 lengthy rings before anyone answered the phone whereby I was told I would be transferred to the bar. 40 mins later the sandwiches and orange juice came to the room which cost approx. £25. We paid an extra £20 for the room for an upgrade but I do not know how much the gift cost but I'm would be surprised if our friends would book us a basic room so with an upgrade I was expecting a better class of room. However, we enjoyed the pool as that afternoon we had it to ourselves and the staff were friendly enough overall.
