« Disappointing »

I was really disappointed in the stay here, staff very inattentive. Heating not working in room so cold when we arrived, a tatty oil filled electric radiator was put in we could not move it around as wheels were broken.

« Tired looking hotel »

Hotel has very tired look and feel about it with various things broken. Rooms are comfortable but restaurant very basic and understaffe with basic menu. Staff though very helpful. In general not what I associate with the Mecure grade of hotel.

« Dissapointing »

I had chosen this hotel for the facilities but low and behold, the pool was closed and the sauna was not working. Only one radiator was working in the room so it was cold and you could hear every footstep in the corridors due to squeaking floor boards, the shower was a trickle of water and the décor could do with updating along with the beds. I will state the staff are polite!

« Everything was bad! »

Here's a brief list of items that made the stay horrible: 1. at the reception I received 1 key to open the door to the "Business Centre" building, 1 code to open the keylock to the hallway and 1 keycard to open the room. 2. Bathroom: lever of the tap was missing. 3. Dinner: steak was not fresh and not cooked right. I ordered medium done, it was fully done. It looked like the meat just came out of the fridge, it had a strange structure and no taste to it. Vegetables were not fresh and not well prepared. 4. Wine: we asked for a wine list, which we got. We picked wine from the list, then the manager came back with 3 bottles of wine that were not on the list, saying that this was all the wine that he had! Then why come up with the wine list? 5. Coffee: I ordered a cappuccino after dinner, but got something that was more a macchiato with too much milk or not enough coffee. 6. Breakfast the next morning: coffee tasted like tea, but we kind of expected it already. Croissants were not fresh, but dry and hard like they just came out of the fridge. Nothing at the continental breakfast seemed to be fresh, meats, cheese etc. My colleague had eggs benedict that was put on too cold and, because of that, wet ham. All together, this was my worst experience ever! We paid 92 pounds for the room and breakfast and another 60 pounds for dinner, where we stayed in the Hilton Garden Inn in Sunderland the other day, where we paid 70 pounds for the room and breakfast and 30 for dinner and the experience was great. So, we overpaid, had a very bad experience and we will never come back here again.

« Welcoming staff, pleasant hotel, great breakfast »

Welcoming staff from reception to bar to restaurant staff. Room away from the main hotel which resulted in a quiet, peaceful stay, no noise or disturbance from other guests and away from the main road. Room was a expected for a three star hotel - clean and comfortable. Shower was way too hot and was not easily controlled - this was the only negative! Breakfast was great - everything you needed for a hearty feast!

« Nice staff but poor quality overpriced hotel »

Stayed for one night as attending a private function at the hotel. After carrying our luggage from the car, found that we were put in a room in a building that was separate from the main part of the hotel and was a short walk away (not mentioned when room booked) - and it was raining! Suggestion from staff was that we used our car! So luggage carried back to car for short journey to room. Room was so hot we had to open a window as radiator did not respond to being turned down (staff were helpful but they thought it was broken - by next morning room temperature was bearable. Electricity to TV was turned off and no instructions as to how to turn on - required a phone call to reception who informed me where the on-off switch was (on the bed headboard, where else!). No iron & board in room so delivered by staff. Iron dirty so another requested and delivered by staff. Food at function just about OK but not well cooked (how can you have some roast potatoes cooked and some hard as nails?), served by same member of staff who delivered iron and tried to mend radiator. Nearby bar occupied by very drunk louts who accidentally smashed a bottle before going to bed (they were staying in the hotel as seen next morning). Brandy served in a tall glass with apology "sorry we don't have any brandy glasses". Walked back to room (not raining by now thankfully), temperature still too hot but bearable. Quite noisy even though this other building not near road, just thin walls. Breakfast OK but pricey. Overall impression is of a hotel than doesn't care what the guests think (apart from staff who were all friendly and helpful). Staff doing best in adverse circumstances. Other reviews I have read seem to say much the same thing. I suspect it is the owners who are at fault and refusing to make the investments required to make this a three star hotel. Currently it would struggle to get one star. I hope I don't have to attend another function or stay at this hotel again.

« Tired and dated rooms,poor standards »

Check in/out was great, staff helpful, rooms and corridors poorly looked after and tired. Rooms tired, marks on the walls, skirting and furniture. Sink damaged, shower poor, hot water fluctuations and room cold. Would not stay again and would not recommend to anyone.

Booked an executive room - It was not the one pictured. My room was an adjoining room - the person next door was loud / snoring and too audible. It was not clear that my room was connecting when I booked. The lack of wall plug by the bed is massively inconvenient. The Bathroom sink plug was stuck down when I arrived and not fixed during my stay. The 'chef's' selection of soups was.. mushroom... every day. Tasted like re-heated carton soup. The Iron burn in my carpet made the place feel poor value for money, along with the wobbly wall lamp, lack of bathroom items, and general breaking down of appliances. In the event of corridor fire, the notice says make yourself known at the window. Thank goodness there wasn't a fire as the windows seem to be locked closed. The ceiling was so low that I could touch it - unlike the photo. It felt cramped and not like an executive room. The steak was not good quality. The poached eggs were okay and the bolognese was good.

Staff as always fantastic. Originally offered a room which I had stayed in previous week and had to be moved from because of issues. Staff confirmed that those issues had not been addressed so agreed to move me to a different room. This happens week after week - have been staying on once or twice a week for nearly a year - maintenance just doesn't seem to get done.

« Poor room with creaky floors throughout the hotel, the spend seems to be on the bar restaurant areas. »

Warm welcome on arrival, my room was on the 2nd floor, the room was basic as expected. The room was noisy with road traffic, thought the windows were open, however, they did not shut properly, 3 windows in the room, 1 had secondary glazing the other two had the surround for it but they were missing the glass. Every inch of the bedroom floor creaked along the corridor outside the room, which during the night every time somebody walked past it would disturb. Breakfast was had a good choice, I did not have anything hot so I am unable to comment. I did not mention my room until check out, this was because there would have been nothing the hotel could have done as I feel the whole hotel was the same throughout.

« Ok »

Dinner was amazing, friendly staff & lovely clean room. However I waited 40 minutes for breakfast and when it finally came it was not what I ordered. I didn’t have time to correct it as I was going to be late for my meeting. Thankfully I did get up early otherwise I would have had to skip breakfast entirely. There was only one waitress and I believe only one chef and there needed to be more than this!!

« Awful »

Photos on website misleading. Sitting area modernised but hallway bedrooms were very dated dirty. Towels bedding dirty. Awful view out of the window. Hairs in bathroom!!! Gym. All but 2 running machines were broken. Swimming pool smelt of urine, chipped broken tiles, missing or stained ceiling tiles. Ants crawling. Changing room facilities very poor. Will not stay here again

« 2 night stay »

2 night stay on business. Right on a major road so it's a bit noisy. The double glazing in my room wasn't exactly effective in keeping the road noise out. Staff very pleasant, breakfast good. Had a bar meal on first night which was OK. Needs a bit of a tidy up in several areas (looking a bit "tired" Plenty of car parking which is a plus. Heating excellent one of the warmest hotels I have ever stayed in
