Although the downstairs foyer section is pleasant enough, the rest of the hotel is definitely in dire need of rejuvenation. The room and dining area are quite dated, with the rooms in particular being rather shabby. The bed was comfortable and there was sufficient toiletries in the bathroom (having stayed with Mercure hotels quite frequently, this can often not be the case). It’s a shame because the hotel could probably be nice, it just needs to be renovated. The staff I came in contact with were really pleasant, although the cleaner started vacuuming the dining hall while we were eating and I did think that was quite odd. I didn’t exactly pay through the nose for the room, and I suppose you get what you pay for, but I can’t see why any regular guests to the city would wish to return to the hotel as it wasn’t an experience I’d say was overly enjoyable overall.

I think I could honestly say worse hotel experience ever!!! Waited in the bar for a good half hour before anyone came to serve!! Rooms were poor and tired and food mediocre! Breakfast had seen better days! Couldn’t wait to get home!

It was a perfectly satisfactory stay in a rather tired looking hotel. The room was in need of decoration and renovation with peeling leather on the chairs and windows that needed changing. The barman was friendly and breakfast was good. Think that the whole building is in need of restoration.

I have stayed here a few times on business - staff are really helpful and friendly but annexe rooms are well below satisfactory ,carpets are sticky ,baths are rusty and mattresses are lumpy and uncomfortable , needs investment !

Where do I start? My bathroom was filthy and despite reporting this on the evening nothing was done. There is no way the toilet had been cleaned as it had a foreign object in it that would not flush away when I tried. When I initially opened the toilet lid there appeared to be an ash like substance on the surface of the toilet and a L. thin item at the bottom of the bowl. I flushed which got rid of the dirty water but it did nothing to move the object. A couple of flushes more and as it had not moved I reported it to reception who assured me that as they could not move me to a different room then they would send someone to sort it. This did not happen. One of my pillows had mascara on it and this along with the toilet gave me an overall impression that the room was not clean. As it had been an emotional day (we had got together as a family to celebrate what would have been my mums 70th birthday had she not died earlier this year) I decided to just get some sleep and climbed into bed. Just before 11pm the door of my room was unlocked and a male attempted to enter the room. I shouted loudly and the man left. This scared me no end, I had turned the lock key on entering my room so I do not understand why this had happened. Jodie, the lady on reception then telephoned me to apologise and said she would see me in the morning. I found it exceptionally difficult to sleep due to this and every time someone walked past my room I became alert despite putting a chair up against the door. Jodie apologised the next morning when I had to get my key recut after leaving my room and I was given a complimentary breakfast but I will never stay in this hotel again. I stay in hotels every single week for work, some are good and some are not but I have never felt as unsafe as I did that night. When I read trip adviser one review described a similar experience with a male entering her room in the middle of the night but at least she was not alone! The staff at the hotel were lovely however there did not seem to be enough people to make sure customers were treated with the care and respect they required, hence the dirty rooms and slow responses. This hotel really needs a shake up. My sister booked the hotel on behalf of all the family and should you wish to speak with me directly my name is Tracey L.. I can provide a photo of the object in the toilet if required and this also shows other signs of it not being cleaned properly.

Nice stay but woeful breakfast

Room 94 was good but the security cord on the window was broken so couldn't leave the window open on the hottest day and night of the year. Breakfast on the first morning was great with a good selection of hot or cold food but on day 2 there was no bacon available, the sausages looked like they were reheated and there was no bread. Sorry I really don't like to moan but you did ask. This is in complete contrast to last years stay which was brilliant, which is why we came back.

There was a man with white hair. He did absolutely excellent at breakfast and he had a very good sense of humour. Did his job good. Then there was a young girl. She had a very bad discussion with a customer Friday evening. It was about what to see at the television. We would like to see football. And if not possible, it would be okay. But then she had this discussion with another guest. The guest ask her about if he wasn't a customer too, if he would see something else. He was there before us. It ended that he leaved the room. And we actually didn't like her the way she treated the other man.

One of the reasons we chose the hotel was that it showed a lovely swimming pool on the web site but when we arrived we were told that the hotel owners had closed it. This is contrary to trade descriptions. We had booked dinner in advance and ordered our meal from a rather limited menu in the pleasant diningroom. The starter was good but two of the three main courses we ordered were incorrect. We were eventually told that we had been shown the wrong menu and what we had ordered was not available. The very helpful head waiter did his best to try and sort things out to our satisfaction - so many thanks to him for his efforts. We booked two rooms and expected them to be reasonably close together. They were in fact on different floors and one of them smelt so strongly of Air Freshener it was almost choking and certainly not suitable for sleeping in. Once again the excellent staff sorted things out and we were moved to a very pleasant room close to the other one. Although acceptable, both rooms were in need of some re-furbishment. Our stay gave the impression of this being an hotel grossly neglected by the owners which was only being compensated for by the courteous and helpful staff.

closure of swimming pool already for a couple of weeks but still clearly found in the description of in hotel amenities, this hotel is 3-storey building, outdated, no lift , and a bit of maze of narrow corridor. As no lift, inconvenience for guest carry with lots of baggage/baby. shower water not strong enough. however the breakfast is good

Service by staff was superb, they were attentive and very helpful. However the shower in two rooms was verging on dangerous. There was no control over the hot water. I had to change rooms once and the second room also had problems with the shower. Breakfast was excellent and bar service was also excellent.

I once again had a very enjoyable stay at your hotel. The only slightly annoying thing was that on my second day, I found that the tea bags and milk hadn't been replenished. It's only a small thing but I do enjoy my tea. However, Reception were kind enough to give me some of theirs.
