On one of my stays I asked for a VAT receipt when I placed my order, he said he would bring it over. I sat and I waited and waited, in the end I said excuse me to another waiter and asked him for my VAT receipt, he said sorry, I said VAT receipt he explained to me in broken English that he didn’t understand, he then went to get someone else! There was a lady sat on her own across and when she got up she said to me “my turn to ask for a VAT receipt” she said she stays here often and the communication is shocking, not just me then!!! On another stay myself and a colleague both ordered rump steak, I wanted medium to well, she wanted rare to medium. Anyway food came and the waitress said “I THINK this is the medium to well” so me and my colleague took a few cuts of the steak and couldn’t tell so started to eat, I got into the middle of mine and it was rare to say the least!! I couldn’t eat the rest of it and had to push it away!! When she collected the plates there was no “did you enjoy your meal?” As there was half mine left! Had she asked I would have pointed out that why do you not know for sure which is which, everyone wants their meat cooked differently so why not be 100% sure you are giving the right food to the right guest! On another stay.... I ordered rump steak at the bar as I arrived, said I would like it for my room but will come back down for it, waitress said would you like us to call the room when ready?” I said yes please. Anyway got to the room and no phone!!! So came back down 10 minutes later. Stood at the bar for 5 minutes, no body around, male waiter walked by but ignored me and came back a few minutes later. I said to the waiter I ordered food and was going to get a call when it was ready but I have no phone in the room. He looked at me blank and walked off, he then asked the female waitress who said it was not ready, so asked how long to the male waitress (female one had gone) he said one minute, he went to find the female waitress who was in the back, I could see his face and he was laughing and smirking whilst saying something to her, she then came out and said it will be 10 minutes, why couldn’t the male waitress say that and what was so funny!? Anyway sat down and waited for my food, which came 40 minutes after ordering it even though there no body else here! Proceeded to take it to my room, it had no lid over the food so caught all the dust and germs as I carried it, got to the room and went to tuck in, steak was stone cold!!! What a joke, was so annoyed and I couldn’t even phone as no room phone!! And I was not coming back down with me been in one the furthest rooms away (233) Breakfast the following morning; Asked for poached egg on granary toast, he said white or brown, said no granary as it says in the menu. Got a strange look, 2 minutes he came over with the menu, pointing at poached egg saying is this what you would like, yes with granary as it offers, goes away and comes back, says no granary, ok brown!! Then a few minutes later i was given brown toast, said I didn’t ask for toast I asked for poached egg on toast, he said ok and left the toast with me. My poached egg and toast arrived a bit later and he took away the toast still sat there in the rack - I did try telling him, what a waste! The next evening ordering my meal went without any problem, I chose to eat in the bar. Once I had finished I went to the bar to order another drink, stood waiting for 5 minutes, the chef then appeared and said he would get someone for me, she was only at the other side of the wall !! Following morning for breakfast I arrived down at 07:20 so it was not busy and I wanted to be at my office for 8, anyway to staff around at all, stood waiting as I wanted to order poached egg, 3 or 4 minutes later I had had enough of waiting so knocked on the kitchen door, there was only me and one other gentleman eating so why is everyone in the kitchen and no body is front of house to greet you and take your room number and orders, out came a women and I said I would like to order my breakfast she said yes go ahead, I said no I would like poached egg on toast, her response whilst getting her pad was “oh” oh? Oh I am sorry that I am ordering something from your menu and might be putting you out ! The waitering team do not seem to understand what you are saying and have to go ask someone else to come and ask you or even worse just look at you blank and walk off, nothing wrong with people from diverse back grounds but they should be able to understand English if working front of house in a well known hotel chain! More training is required for these young people that are the face of your brand, simple things like granary toast and VAT receipts. Also I appreciate they have multiple jobs to do but to vanish from the bar area and leave you waiting for assistance is just got good enough, a simple bell on the bar instead of having to shout hello or go looking for someone. Can I just add that the ladies on reception are brilliant, always say hello and great with a smile, they say morning as you walk pass. So I can't understand how they can be so helpful and attentive but the waiting team let it down. If I paid for my own hotels then I would not choose to stay here, here is my companies first choice and when it has been fully booked I have been placed else where and what a treat that is! I won’t mention the hotel name but they offer excellent customer service to their customers in the restaurant.

I stay at the Mercure Hatfield on a regular basis while on business. In my experience the staff are always welcoming, the rooms well prepared and the food satisfying. All together a very convenient and trustworthy place to stay.

The hotel was busy the night we stayed and our room was right at the back of the hotel. It had a very musty smell when we went in. In the morning I discovered the probable reason- a broken shower screen which meant the bathroom flooded when I showered. I imagine the smell came from the carpet having got wet a few times previously. Food was ok, staff were polite. However, I paid for our meal only to find a different meal had been posted to our room when we went to check out. The receptionist wasn't really interested when I told her about our smelly room and broken shower screen. Not really worth the money we paid to stay.

Stayed for 2nights on an all inclusive deal.the only downside was the wait for lunch.everybody seemed to disappear from the dining area!we did enjoy our food though once it arrived.our room was large.well furnished and the bed very comfortable.staff pleasant and helpfull

Coming back after over 45 years, I impressed in the location of the Hotel in respect to the University. I found this hotel very well placed, good parking facilities, both pub & restaurant solutions for food. The staff very attentive and helpfull in all ways. Our room nr 306, was very clean, no noise, and plenty of space. I clearly recommend this hotel in this area.

I thought the staff were great. Room was ok needed a bit of TLC. Ceiling in one area was damaged and that was as you entered. Breakfast was ok but not brilliant. Bed was great and decor was nice but no air conditioning.

As usual our stay at the hotel on an all inclusive package was relaxing and enjoyable. However I was disappointed with my dinner on Saturday night. Unfortunately due to a large party dining before us my choice of rib eye steak was off the menu. I was offered a sirloin steak and unfortunately this was not up to your usual high standards and was probably the worst bit of steak I have ever had. The staff in the restaurant as usual were very accommodating and served us well, special mention to the restaurant manager on the Friday (lady with dark hair) was excellent. The room again was excellent and was kept very clean. Tony was on hand for a friendly chat.

Good sized room - very good for family visits. Very clean which is a great start. Unfortunately no extra pillows so required a trip back to reception who took a while to determine where to find them. Breakfast ok but tea / coffee not great. Was never provided a bill to confirm the spend and when I saw what was charged to the credit card I had to phone up only to be told there had been a mistake.

Great staff - Always available for a chat, polite and knowledgeable. Lovely room - Lots of room, great facilities, huge comfy bed and power shower. Only let down was the restaurant - Halfway through dinner, the restaurant closed so dessert was not available.

It was fine. The hotel and room were clean. There was a large party so we ate out. The reception staff had warned me that we should order early due to the group so this was very helpful, we just chose to eat out anyway.
