« Sticky floor and dirty door..... »

Arrived late and tired from a long day and drove from London, got in to the room and got immediately undressed to take a shower, afterwards I realized the room was not especially clean, the bathroom ceiling had mould on it and the door frame had the remnants of what I hope was coffee, the light switch had a dirty mark below it and the menu card looked like it had the remains of a pint of beer on it. Knowing I was leaving early I decided I couldn't be bothered to get dressed and ask to move rooms, so just put up with it.

We stayed here before going to Alton Towers for the day - we loved our stay. Very comfortable beds, very clean and a perfect hotel. Very friendly staff also. Would defo stay here again.

« The hotel has potential but it still has a long way to go. »

Staff at the hotel were great but they are let down by the hotel facilities and appearance. My room smelt extremely "musty". Im not saying people were smoking in there but it had an old smokey smell. After an hour we adapted to the smell. Finer details were missed in the room such as not enough towels and we did not have a TV remote. These were quickly fixed with a quick phone call to reception. Breakfast was a disaster. We struggled to find somewhere to sit as most tables had used cutlery on them still from guest who had finished breakfast. I'm guessing this was down to being short staffed or a higher volume of guests. Management should/could of premepted this. 4 out of 4 cups were dirty on our table, the coffee and tea pot were just as dirty too when they eventually came out. The turn around for food coming out of the kitchen was unacceptable. While I was sat down, I witnessed every single guest having to wait for food, including myself. I stood waiting 10 minutes plus for food as if I went and sat down I would miss out on the next batch of food coming out of the kitchen. When I eventually did sit down my wife and child had finished their cereal. I am not one to complain at all but I felt these problems need addressing as the hotel does have plenty of potential.

« Just what I expected as stayed before »

Nice hotel, good location. Good checkin and friendly staff. Room absolutely fine for the price - good value. Realistic bar prices, good service and had meal in the bar. Again, good value and good service. Stayed here a number of times for business purposes and will continue to do so. Not a five-star, nor does it pretend to be, and I would use this hotel for leisure as well as business if the occasion arose.

The staff could not do enough for me and my family. They were very helpful with the needs of my 2 year old the rooms and general areas needed a refit asap as they had seen better days

After booking through the app. The wrong details were presented on my arrival for signature. Correct name but different person. Lights not working in the corridor so dark and gloomy. Restaurant staff not knowledgeable about the menu and despite being the only diners brought potatoes which I had asked specifically not to include. Heating did not come on when we requested it.

I could not enter my room and had to go back to reception to reactivate and/or replace key before receptionist assisted and could only gain access via the master key. I stayed two nights and had to endure this each time I wanted to enter my room. The main light did not illuminate from the switch at the door and could only switch it on at the b3dside. There was no hot water in the bathroom either in the washbasin or the shower which flooded the floor despite trying to be extremely careful. The service at breakfast was not the quickest even though the dining room was not particularly busy. The hotel is also in need of refurbishment. The previous night I had stayed at a Novotel in Nottingham/Derby which was far superior in every way and was also £10 per night cheaper. I would not be wishing to stay at the Mercure Stafford anytime soon

« Unbelievably poor in all areas »

Thankfully my wife and I were only residents for 1 night having pre-paid our lodging and board. The quality of the hotel is epitomised by the condition of the flags flying from the flagpoles at the hotel entrance - what's left is tattered and tired, and in need of complete overhaul. Accor are taking a colossal risk by allowing these premises to remain open. What are the Accor management doing about this ?

Even “upgraded”room has a filthy old bathroom with an unsafe shower without a thermostat. Evening food poor and common menu items had run out. Breakfast buffet straight our Even the “upgraded” room had a decrepit, dirty and unsafe shower with no thermostat. Evening menu had run out of popular choices and the breakfast buffet was a sad reflection of the overall lack of effort to maintain any standards usually associated with mercure hotels. We won’t stay here again.

hotel was totally satisfactory for room and facilities, but sad that restaurant forgot to mention to us when we were seated that they had run out of food!, no steak, after 6 orders for steak, only one lamb after orders for 5 lamb - then we overheard next diners being told they had run out of mash!

Good to be able to take our dogs with us, this was our second visit, to attend the National Dog Show with my wife and dogs, Unfortunately my wife suffered a nasty fall on the uneven path between the car parks and spent most of Friday in hospital, and had to stay a further two nights in order to attend the hospital on Monday. The path needs to be re-laid or taken up completely to prevent further accidents. My wife will be in a cast for the next 8 weeks.

The hotel is a little tired around the edges - but rooms were great size and it was a quiet venue so easy to get sleep. The staff on reception were most welcoming and friendly and helpful and our young waiter in the restaurant was excellent The biggest issue was the restaurants lack of food!! As a group of 6 friends who had traveled to meet up for a mini celebration, we all fancied the steak. On arrival our waiter gave us the menus and took a drink order - where we ordered two bottles of wine. We studied the menus and order 6 sirloin steaks. Our waiter came back to the table to say - sorry NO steak, so we re thought and order was changed to 5 lamb shanks and another dish. Waiter went off - to return to table to say only 1 lamb shank! Some what unbelievable that both the "high" end items on the menu were out (it also affected the mixed grill as there was no steak for that either!) Whilst our waiter was pleasant and apologised for this - I felt a) we should have been advised before ordering of the very limited availability of items on the menu (so we could have decided to eat elsewhere or set our expectations lower) and b) a senior member of staff eg chef/manager should have come to apologise and manage the situation not leave it to the young waiter. The next table of two went to order to find the kitchen had run out of mash!!! This was all about 8/8.15 on a saturday evening - not a late service by any means.

Staff friendly & helpful. The hotel itself is shabby & needs investment to bring it up to date. Given that it is ideally situated for trains to Birmingham & Liverpool such investment would surely be worthwhile as many business travellers (myself included) would use it regularly. You would also be able to command higher room rates!

Awful, the staff were all un-customer friendly to the point of rude. The whole place is dirty, carpets have been vacuumed for weeks. I didn't eat a thing as the dirtiness & look of the food put me off. The receptionist refused to take ACCOR card as a payment method. The bar is a joke & the whole experience has put me off using ACCOR hotels again.

Initial room allocated was dreadful, scruffy, dirty and cold following day I was reallocated to a re-furnished room which was up to Accor standard and very comfortable. Service in restaurant varied between over-powering to non-existent. When travelling on business I try where possible to use hotels in the Accor group as a measure of confidence in getting a certain quality especially when booking an unknown location - this experience has severely dented this confidence.

« Slightly tired but far from terrible - very British, not very Mercure »

Started badly - arrived after 9pm but person manning reception was nowhere to be found, and bar staff couldn't locate him. I had called ahead to say I'd be late. Turned out he was locking up health club, which is fair enough, but why didn't he tell bar staff so they could stay in touch with him? Room was spacious with a nice view of rural setting. Gym was reasonably well equipped. Cooked breakfast was good, lady serving was pleasant, but most items listed for buffet were not actually set out - 'selection of pastries' turned out to be two croissants which were stale enough to qualify as offensive weapons (this was about 8.15am.). Checkout was efficient and no problem with getting a VAT receipt, but overall not what I've come to expect from Mercure brand
