« Disapponting, run down, things broken and disused »

Staff were pleasant but despondent about the state of things. Bin was broken, kettle had to be replaced as it didn't work, no phone, swimming pool closed down, tennis courts abandoned and in a disgraceful state. Grounds need work and the whole hotel requires updating. Menu was very limited.

« Gone downhill both standard of food and state of accomodation »

Booked 6 mths in advance but staff had not noted request made( same requests every time with no problem up to now). Have used this hotel for 10 yrs and always excellent but very poor this time. Dirty bath ( took picture), toilet would not flush, few towels which didnt look very clean, very poor menu both in choice which was very restricted and quality)and dining room not even properly laid out. Carpets needed a good clean and broken glass at door when we went out in the morning. Service very slow as very few staff around. Not the usual friendly reception and attention to clients we have come to expect. problem with keys for rooms

Starting from not having my booking, TV not working, toilet topped flushing & radiator in main room stuck on hot meaning no sleep, no interest in this from staff (well in TV but no point at 8pm)

« Outside appearance was delightfully deceptive! »

To be honest, when we entered the car park, my first thought was that we weren't in the right place for the hotel. It looked DERELICT!! Whilst it was indeed still 'winter', I have stayed elsewhere, including other Mercure brands, and the outside appearance still has managed some semblance of 'curb appeal'........ I was not very hopeful about our stay at this drab looking Hotel...... Thank goodness the Reception and Staff throughout our stay were warm, welcoming, helpful, friendly, and so on....... They seem to be keeping their spirits up, working somewhere that seems unloved and forgotten by Mercure...... One disappointment, I'm pretty sure there was a pool at some point here......I'm guessing its upkeep and maintenance is no longer cost effective with so little usage.... So, it's unlikely I'd book here again, purely due to lack of pool facilities. As general hotel stay/base, excellent value as we had dinner included. Looking at other hotels in the area for a Saturday night, you'd be pushed to find something better. Plus free parking....a bonus as not all Mercure parking outside of London is 'free' these days. So.....don't be put off by the 'war zone' exterior....... Great staff!!!! Shame so few people seem to stay there......

It was OK but I was fed up that the restaurant was closed- the website says open until 9.30pm, we phoned ahead to see what time it was open until and advised 9pm. We didn't book a table as we were unsure of our arrival time-but would have eaten on the motorway if we were going to arrive after 9pm. We arrived at 8.30pm expecting to be able to have dinner but the resaurant was closed even for bar food. We went out to the local fish and chip shop.

« 'Refurbished Room' not my definition at all »

I booked a room for £55 and politely advised that I was a Platinum Member of Le Club. The response was that the superior 'refurbished rooms' were £90 and I had to pay. Eventually I was offered the superior 'refurbished room' for £75. The room was OK, new carpet and painted but they had forgot to refurbish the bathroom which was appalling and far below the basic standards usually enjoyed at a Mercure property.

« Disappointing »

The room was tired andnhad no heating in tje room or bathroon on the coldest night of the year so far. The shower sprayed water all over the ceiling as the fitting was leaking. The water ended up all over the floor and I had to paddle in it to shave. This was most unpleasant, especially as there was no heating!

« Weekend Stay »

I only stay at this Hotel because of it's location. I have family living in Penkridge. I have stayed many times before. I always give the same feedback and I see similar feedback when I read the reviews! Food is great, staff are friendly but the bedrooms need a great deal of work. I was given one of the rooms that has had a makeover, well really this means decorated and then only the bedroom area. The bathroom is still shabby, dirty and in need of gutting.

As above very disappointed that there was not a pool . Following a long business trip I specifically selected the hotel based on the fact that a pool was advertised

« Disappointing »

The hotel was virtually empty, more staff than guests. The room was freezing cold on arrival on a snowy freezing night. Remedied of course when WE turned the radiator on. There was ONE set of towels for two guests. When I went to reception for the towels, the young lady asked if the remote for the TV was in the room as they often disappeared!!!!. I didn't know but when I returned to the room there was NO remote. The next morning when I needed to use the hairdryer it was not working......another visit to reception When we checked out the "new receptionist " asked whether everything was Ok. When we pointed out our problems she didn't attempt to apologise, but said they were short staffed. Surely "housekeeping" should check the rooms when they make them up, and when few rooms are occupied they shouldn't have a problem

A nice friendly place to stay, my only gripe is if your are a Accor member they never send the update about your stay so no points or nights added, hence having to email Accor each time a copy of my invoice.

« Very basic and old hotel »

Good location but not serviced well. We were in family room with only one towel and one small shampoo. Asked for more. They just gave one more towel and just throw it on top of the bath but not folding or hanging. The cover sheets were on the ground in hallway to be replaced later which doesn't seem to be very clean way. The staff didn't know about check out time and asked us to leave at 11 am although our confirmation email was for 12. Manager later confirmed that it is 12 on weekends.
