« The Hotel is very tired and a much inferior quality to other Mercure Hotels I have stayed at. »

Breakfast, very bland. Carpets starting to come apart. Bathroom needing major attention. Pillows need replacing. Very Little selection of drinks in the Bar. Car Park is full of Pot Holes Lift not working for 4 of the 6 days I was there.

Room was musty and mouldy. Radiator didn't work, TV signal didn't work, shower pressure very low, mould in room on ceiling and around window. Gym was shut due to leaking roof, sauna was closed. Steam room has 2 broken seats. Terrible outdated hotel, needs a lot of money spending on it!

Stayed at this hotel with two friends reservation was made for 3 people came up to the room there was a bed and a sofa bed but only bedding for the double bed and there was nothing made up for the sofa bed with only 1 towel given. Went down to reception had to wait along time to see any one the hotel receptionist who was very good and sorted the problem quickly but unfortunetly was slowed down by the number of people complaining in the line (no hot water etc). We got back to the room after a trip to chester and 0 out the 3 key we had worked and instead of appologising for none of the key work we were told that we had to be quiet. In the morning we realised why people were complaining about the hot water because there was none. By this time we just decided to leave. As we tried to check out there was a long line of people complaining again. Since I have been back I have emailed the hotel becuase I have been charged 165 pounds for the room when I used 6000 of my club points so the hotel should have only been £58.12 I have still not recieved any email from the hotel so I am 6000 points and £106.88 down.

« Very poor quality room and facilities, very disappointing. »

The room was grubby with carpet stains for example. Bedding was fine but the shower was very poor and the kettle didn't work properly. On the second morning we had no water at all after breakfast. We were refunded 25% but we had to leave before anything could be done. Overall the room was not very attractive but not being able to use the bathroom before we left was very frustrating.

It was ok. The ceiling in my bedroom looks like there has been a leak above and it requires repainting. But the main thing was there was no hot water for a shower. I had read the reviews from a few days earlier and they were saying the same thing. It should have been fixed immediately or not put guests in those rooms!

Room was clean and as expected. Good to have a proper bed for child rather than sofa or put me up beds. Dinner from set menu was reasonable quality/price. Could hear people in corridor and surrounding rooms at times but did not really bother us. However hot water in shower went halfway through 1st shower of morning meaning that I had to finish washing under the bath tap and my husband and son had to have a bath rather than shower. Upon enquiring it appears to have been a hotel wide issue and we were lucky to have had any water as our friends in another room had none at all.

The hotel is apparently under new management but it seems the manager has not yet got a grip on staffing, resources and quality. This affects the guest experience. Rooms: We stayed two nights. The rooms were actually nicely decorated and clean however the linens were old and stained. There were short hairs on the bed covers and various marks on the pillows. The towels were thin and rough. The lining on the curtains was coming away so light came through easily. The hairdryer was yellowed plastic which was last tested in 2009! A major H&S issue. I tried to take a shower-the knob turned around without engaging with the thermostat. The temp was too hot to withstand so I had to shower in another room. At 00:30 I was woken by the sound of running water which turned out to be coming from the room next door. This went on for 30 mins. I tried to call reception but there was no phone in my room! In summary, On first impression the room looked lovely but when you use it the lack of quality was apparent. Breakfast: At breakfast there was only 1 hash brown remaining. I asked the waitress if there was more. She went into the kitchen to ask the chef. He screamed his reply at her and it was so loud and aggressive we heard it in the restaurant. I felt terrible for her when she came out to say there were none left. The next day, there were still no hash browns. We ordered poached eggs. We were served porridge. When the eggs finally arrived one was still raw. There was no fresh fruit as you normally expect in Mercure hotels. When the croissants finally came out they were brought on a side plate. Were we being rationed??? Dinner: I ordered a glass of white Zinfandel. There was none on either night. I was served a Pinot Grigio blush instead although it was served warm like red rather than chilled like rose. We ordered a glass of Merlot but there was none so in the end asked the waitress to bring a glass of whatever you did have. She explained you were in the process of changing your wine list so running your stocks down. What then is the point of providing customers with a wine list, why not just list the drinks your can offer! I ordered the linguine and apple pie. The waiter came back after about 20 mins and said you had run out of linguine would penne pasta be ok. Penne is the most boring pasta but yes I said that was ok. And then there was no apple pie, but the chef had mad an apple tart instead. I think at that point I just laughed and said fine. I asked if the linguine was fresh i.e had the chef run out of flour or eggs perhaps. After a while the waiter came back and said the chef used dried pasta. So you’d run out of linguine that has a shelf life of about 2 years!!! The penne dish was fine. Would’ve been nice to be offered a bit of freshly grated cheese but you probably had run out of that too right! The apple tart was served for dessert. The ice cream was nice but the apples were hard and the pastry was undercooked. You have a menu which is so out of date. You don’t have half of the items on your menu. What is the point of giving the menu to customers why not just ask the staff to list what you do have! You also need to find a chef who can cook! Pool: After the walk down the dark corridor we finally found the pool. There is no where private to change except the cramped toilet. The steam room and sauna were both out of order. The steam room had broken seats with sharp plastic jutting up. The pool was cold and looked like it needed a good clean with hairs visible on the surface. We toe dipped and decided it was too gross. Leisure facility...more like a health hazard! We did complain. The gentleman we spoke with was apologetic and sympathetic. He explained the chand in management and its clear you have your work cut out. It’s a shame that the customer suffers during this period. He said he’d leave a message for the checkout staff to arrange a refund. Disappointed on checkout that the duty manager said she’d been too busy to check her messages so knew nothing of our troubles. We were given a 25% refund which is better than nothing but not in my opinion sufficient to compensate for the stressful stay.

The service at meal times particularly was excellent but there were several issues with our room...the light fitting above the bath flickered intermittently and felt unsafe and the toilet seat was not attached properly. I was covered in bites in the morning so there may be a bed bug issue with the main double bed. I also got food poisoning on the day we left which the timings indicate was probably from breakfast at the hotel.

I had a specialist come in to check your bedroom and there was no trace of any bugs of any kind. I do have a certificate to prove it. On the day we had 96 other guests that had breakfast and we had no other claim. I also checked our temperature records and all the relevant files in the kitchen and they were all signed off and in line with the regulations. The reception area looks great, shame the decor didn’t reach as far as the bedrooms. The staff were brilliant and friendly. The food was good in the restaurant. I booked this hotel for the pool. There was nothing on the accor website to say most of the time this is used by a toddler swimming group and not open to the public. We stayed on Friday night. No one mentioned that the pool was out of action from 0830 until 1430 other wise we have used it on the Friday evening. If you go to this hotel, don’t bank on using the pool! There is toddler swimming virtually every day.

I have used the hotel off and on for over ten years. The staff are consistently good but this last visit they were very good. Quick efficient and friendly throughout. The building itself is now showing significant signs of wear and tear beyond the the fair wear and tear of a public building. The staff more than compensate for the ageing building.
