Noisy sleep - avoid dining

Customer review rating 4.0/5

Jeremy R. Families - 04/10/2019 AccorHotels review

The room was good and as expected of a Mercure. However the door in the corridor slammed extremely loudly every time someone went through to the extent that I was awoken many times. I could not seem to get the shower below 40 degrees (my sister in her room could not get it above 20). The evening dining experience was poor. As a group of 5 we were told we could not sit at the table with 6 seats as it was set for breakfast. We squeezed on to a table for 4. Menus were presented printed on A4 paper. There was no indication of vegetarian dishes and no prices. Breakfast seemed to have the same problem in that we could not sit at the table for 6 as it was set for dinner.

I arrived at 3am in the morning to be told that there was no rooms available when I knew that there was, the night porter excuse was that there will be rooms be ready at 2pm, I was willing to pay for the room so check out at 12pm so only 9 hours in the room, I stay a lot in Mercure hotels especially Wigan Mercure, the night porter was that rude to me I lost my temper and we started arguing, he rang the police and they took me away!!! I have now had a email off the Mercure saying I am not welcome at this hotel! Absolutely ridiculous!

Dear Mr D., I take it you're referring to the incident in which you arrived at the hotel highly intoxicated and, after the Night Manager rightly refused you entry, you physically assaulted him, pushing him over and causing him to bang his head on the floor. You were taken off the premises by the police and yet still returned later to try to cause more trouble. Checks in after 1.00am are not allowed - this is company policy. You are right to say that you are no longer welcome on the premises unless, of course, you want to leave with the police again. Yours sincerely Nick Jackman General Manager ,

Hotel clean but dated, not a full menu on offer, night receptionist was friendly however all other staff were busy and chatted amongst themselves rather than with customers

It was ok, somewhere to sleep while I was at a conference for the weekend. It is clear that however you need a refit ie decorating as there is clearly significant damage throughout the hotel. I expected more for the price I paid, even though I got a discount. But what really has ticked me off is that I got breakfast with my booking and upon checking in I wasn’t reminded of that fact. Yes I was informed of this over email, but being human I forgot as it was quite while when I booked it. And so missed my first breakfast, I would have missed the second one it if it hadn’t been a friend of mine reminded me that breakfast was included in price. Why wasn’t I told when I checked in

Staff were all friendly. Breakfast seemed a bit chaotic and nowhere near the standard of other hotel chains. The bed was comfortable.

Dear Christopher, We very much appreciate your review, following your stay at the Mercure Wigan Oak Hotel. I was obviously concerned to read your comments about Breakfast and can only apologise for this. This was certainly not in keeping with our usually high standards of service and I hope this did not detract too much from the overall enjoyment of your stay. I will be discussing your comments with our team and hope that you will consider us for your next stay when, I am sure, you will see our true standards. Thank you again for sharing your experience and we hopefully look forward to welcoming you back. Kind regards Nick Jackman General Manager

Once into the hotel things were fine. The central situation is most convenient, the room perfect and the welcome goody bag much appreciated. The only minor snag was after checkout, when the pre-authorisation did not go through, necessitating a call-back, which the young lady dealt with very pleasantly and professionally

James R. Couples - 02/09/2019 AccorHotels review

The best aspect of staying at this Mercure was its proximity to the town centre. On arrival, the first impression of the hotel is not a good one . The out side area is dirty and in need of some cleaning. The rats that inhabit the undergrowth outside the front door is not a welcome site, they were particularly active one morning whilst I was outside smoking my pipe, perhaps they objected to my smoking. The entrance to the reception is reasonable, clean and tidy. The reception staff in the main were very helpful and pleasant. I asked for a room with a walk in shower, as my wife had recently undergone a full hip replacement she finds it difficult to use a bath at the moment. We were given the disabled room on the ground floor which was very kind of the receptionist on duty. I found the shower room to be of adequate standard.I think the shower tray is too high for some one who is of limited mobility, shower curtains are not a good idea as the thing tends to stick to one when the shower is in use. I think a screen would be a better option. The standard of cleanliness was not an issue, the lady cleaners on the whole did a good job.

I booked several rooms for family members attending a wedding. We were greeted by a friendly receptionist and the rooms were nicely presented with modern decor and plenty of tea and coffee. The wedding itself was absolutely fantastic, nothing was to much trouble. The wedding breakfast and evening buffet was delicious too! The team at this hotel are a credit to the hotel chain.

From the night reception/porter to the breakfast staff, everyone was very friendly and welcoming. The bed was especially comfortable and the breakfast was very good. My only tiny gripes were that there isn't a plug socket next to the bed and the light in the bathroom could be a little bit brighter.

Hometown Visit

Angela M Solo travel - 21/08/2019 TripAdvisor review

Normally, I'd stay with friends or family when visiting Wigan, but on this occasion I knew I'd be arriving after midnight and didn't want to put anyone out. It's a whole different ball game when staying at a hotel in your hometown. Familiarity tends to make your expectations really low, particularly when it's a hotel you know well from attending weddings, christenings and corporate events there numerous times over the years. The first things to strike me were that there was ample parking and the guy on night reception was very friendly, helpful and professional. My room was larger than I had expected and comfortable. I took the night cap I'd bought from the 24hr Tesco across the road and went for bedtime cigarette to the covered area outside reception where I was joined by the night reception guy who was waiting to welcome another late arrival. The conversation flowed and we were joined by another guest who was visiting for the first time and was impressed by how good the hotel is. I really felt at home. The bed was super comfy and I could easily have stayed there way past check-out. The open, unforced friendliness continued with the staff at breakfast, and the standard here was as good as any hotel I've stayed in through my work. Also chatted a few more first time guests who were impressed by the hotel and friendliness of the staff. It made me proud that their first impressions of my hometown were that everyone is so friendly. Just a couple of very minor gripes. There was no plug socket next to the bed, so I was forced to get out of bed to knock the alarm off on my phone whilst it was charging (not necessarily a bad thing). The light in the bathroom is a tiny bit dim. There's the beginnings of a really good soft furnishings update with the gorgeous chairs in the reception and lounge areas. I wonder if Mercure will carry it through the whole hotel.

I am delighted that you enjoyed your stay at the Mercure Wigan Oak Hotel and thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us. Your comments regarding the staff were very welcome and I will be sure to share these. I hope that we have the opportunity to welcome you back soon. We look forward to seeing you.

Hotel looked like a block of council flats on the inside and was filthy.

S O. Couples - 20/08/2019 AccorHotels review

We arrived into a car park which was insecure, open to general public and littered with tracksuit clad teenagers supping from vans of cider. We then had to walk in past these louts, more of which more were sat on the wall outside reception next to the door to the hotel. Once inside we were hit by a loud and boisterous party who were all extremely drunk- quite shocking that it was only around 6pm on a Friday. The receptionist looked like she didn’t want to be there, and to be fair neither did we. As far as first impressions go this was not the best. I requested a room away from the guests of the party downstairs, and explained that I was working a night shift the next day and needed a decent sleep as I wouldn’t have the opportunity to get a nap during the day. We were given a room and pointed in the direction of the stairs. No information was passed regarding check out time or breakfast. We then walked to find our room, passing multiple clusters of people splintered from the party downstairs in the corridors to the bedrooms, and 3 of the bridesmaids stood having some sort of crying breakdown in the lift. The stairs were dirty and had large patches of damp, the windows were missing their handles, and both the second and third floors had some sort of liquid staining the walls dribbling down with the added bonus of what I can only guess was someone’s phlegm in one part. The smell along the bedroom corridor on the 3rd floor was horrific, but thankfully did not seep into the bedroom. Our room itself appeared presentable. That being said, the mattresses have seen better days and the walls were paper thin, so you could literally hear the conversations other guests were having in their rooms. Our room had a fridge, which wasn’t turned on and was covered in thick black dirt and mould along the seal. There was also someone else’s rubbish in it which obviously hadn’t been checked. The skirting boards/sills of the bedroom were thick with dust and dirt. We left shortly after arriving to go to our function for the evening, making the decision to take my car with us in the hope we could find somewhere safer to park it. We were given a little business card sized piece of paper with local taxi numbers on, which was really useful and a nice touch. When we returned to the hotel around midnight there were still the remnants of the party from when we checked in down in the bar. Not long after being in our room we were awoken by the occupants of the room opposite. Which tuned out to be a bridesmaid from the function downstairs. She had brought a further 3 people back to her room for more drinks, but decided the corridor was a more suitable place to have their after party. She then managed to lock her key in her room and another of her group started being sick whilst using my door for support. This went on for just short of an hour, and we couldn’t phone reception as I was very aware they would hear my every word. When they finally found another room to occupy, I managed to drift off to sleep, only to be awoken at 4:50am by some industrial fans which kicked in and didn’t stop. There was then a delivery outside which was noisy to say the least with a lot of banging and we hadn’t even reached 7am yet. I gave up trying to get sleep shortly after and went down for breakfast. Breakfast was actually very good, there was a good variety and it was all quite fresh, however the staff still seemed to not be on the ball with things, offering us tea/coffee but then forgetting the milk, offering sauces but never bringing them, but they were polite and smiling, not like the receptionist from the previous night. We left soon after breakfast, having had one of the worst nights sleep in a long time and the worry of having a busy night shift to complete that night with nothing in reserve. I raised the issues with the receptionist on out departure, and was told that the fans had been in place for years, and are part of the hotel, and in relation to being allocated a room opposite a guest from the function - she couldn’t help it as she didn’t know. We were basically fobbed off by a defensive receptionist, full of excuses and no acknowledgement or concern. I can only say that we won’t be returning and thank god she didn’t require my help that night whilst I was trying to complete my night shift whilst struggling to function. I hope someone does take the time to read this, a separate email has been forwarded to the manager. Do not stay here if you have other options available and you value a decent nights sleep with staff who care. Thanks, Mrs S O..

Grubby & Gloomy

Katie Solo - 14/08/2019 AccorHotels review

The worst hotel I’ve stayed in. The lighting is appalling, so low in the bathroom that I considered it unsafe to attempt a shower. Some lights in the room not working. The plug hole in the bath had previous residents’ hair in it & was not cleared after I had asked & returned 5 hrs later. The temperature in the room on waking was 25.7c even with the fan running all night. On request, the hotel had provided the fan, but was left outside my room. It was a heavy & cumbersome floor standing fan & difficult for me to get in as I am petite. Re-located to a nearby hotel after one night. Will never stay here again. My first experience of ACCOR hotels.

An excellent stay; all the staff were very friendly and helpful, as usual, and the food in the restaurant was very good. My only very slight problem was that the lighting in the bathroom wasn't really bright enough for shaving. However I would be happy to stay there again and recommend the hotel to others.
