I called the hotel's reception when I got off the ferry in Colonia, around 9 pm. I was looking online in booking.com and getting different rates every time I looked. I called and the lady at the reception was very nice, she said she would give me the same rate as booking (US$ 187), and that she has one free room that was clean (apparently there were more free rooms but not clean) and said she would write my name down, that I did not need to do the reservation on Booking. It would be a double room with town (not river) view. She added the rack rate for a river view room was US$ 210, I said I was fine with town view as I was arriving late (two hour drive from Colonia + dinner in Nuevo García around the corner from the hotel, probably around midnight). I also inquired about parking, she said there was valet parking included. It was only me, and this was Thursday, July 4th, 2019, at around 9 pm. When I arrived (around 20 minutes before midnight), there was nobody to greet me. I had to go all the way inside (it was a very windy and chilly night, so of course I don't expect anybody to wait outside, but not even at the inner door). Then an attendant came from behind a room at the right of the reception and told me he wasn't going to park my car until they made sure there was a room for me since the hotel was fully booked (when you are tired and have had a long trip, needless to say, one expects a better welcome, to say the least). Then a lady came to reception and she was equally unwelcoming. I have to check, we don't have rooms, they are not clean... I told her I had spoken with a very nice girl on the phone three hours before and she said she had written my first name down on a room that was ready. So the current receptionist, even before checking in the system, was telling me no. She asked me if I knew what the girl's name was, and I said no, I did not ask, and from then on, despite the fact that I described the exact conversation we had about prices and I knew there were almost no free clean rooms, etc etc, everything I said was put into question. In the end, she said she would match the booking rate, but without breakfast (which I honestly thought was a very cheap attitude considering I was arriving very late, sleeping over and continuing on my way). Had I made the reservation through Booking, it would have included breakfast at the same price. Now it was too late, since at this point it was past midnight and I could not make the reservation through booking. She emphatically stated that yes, she was matching the booking price, just not including the breakfast. I guess being my shocked expression she decided it was time to give me a break and she offered to charge me US$ 180, instead of US$ 187, I did not reply anything, I just wanted to get to my room at this point. I did feel a little cheated, and was beginning to get irritated by having to wait without a clear verdict, while she continued hitting the computer's keys at the reception desk and not letting me know if there was a free room or not. The attendant gave me a paper for the car, so at that point I assumed I was staying, but still no official communication from the girl at reception, who continued looking at her screen and typing back and forth without communicating anything. In the end I did get a room, with the town view, for US$ 180, no breakfast and was finally in the room half an hour after having arrived. It was a slow, unwelcoming and very poor in communications and attitude reception. I reminded myself never to arrive during the night shift again (I actually thought that was not a problem at this level of hospitality, but apparently it is). So I got my room. Well....Very disappointing. The great stuff: outstanding bedding. The good stuff: ample comfortable room. The not so good stuff: TV remote not in the room, had to call and ask for it like in a cheap hotel where they take the remotes away in fear people will steal them, got it after yet another fairly long wait, very few channels, a number of them only audio worked but with a fixed photo on the screen, very dated TVs. Some of the lights were not working (2 or 3, which is a lot for one room). The armchair upholstery was torn and very shabby. The bad stuff: rain shower worked poorly. Probably due to poor (or non) cleaning of the shower head, must have been full of sediment, the water was going all kinds of different ways except pouring directly down in a vertical direction. I ended up using the hand shower, which worked much better, and concluded the rain shower was just there for decoration (to make you feel good by looking at it but not for using). The unacceptable stuff: despite being covered with fragrance or deodorizer, the smell in the room was hideous. The carpet was very dirty, especially as you entered the room, and probably the main source of the stale odor. The fact that carpets are not cleaned often enough is one of the main reasons for smell in hotel rooms. I believe this was the case in this room. I even opened the window for a while despite the cold to try to let some air into the room. But to no avail. It was very sad. I had great expectations about staying in this building and for the Sofitel brand. I understand I did not pay an extremely expensive rack rate, but for a last minute reservation and with no VAT tax I thought it was reasonable value for the hotel to deliver a better experience. I have stayed at other hotels in Carrasco and gotten much better treatment, less sophisticated and perhaps more dated decor but great comfort, great shower and amazing homemade breakfast for US$ 100. I am sorry to say I don't think I will be staying at your hotel again. I strongly suggest cleaning or even changing room carpets, changing or covering the upholstery, cleaning the shower head and replacing light bulbs or repairing lamps. In time, changing the TVs would not be a bad idea. Definitely better training of the night shift staff would be ideal. Morning check-out could not have run more smoothly. The valet parking was a ray of sunshine, extremely polite. The man at the reception excellent. Service and five star attitude, nothing to say about them but good things (this is 10 am July 5th). Very professional and amiable as most Uruguayans are. The building and the brand deserve more effort.

Room was great, service was extraordinary, people were gentle, helpful and went out of their way to help. As an architect who works on hospitality, I have only two suggestions: a) Restaurant needs to be re-planned for the furniture. The perimeter tables do not work and you are missing a great opportunity. The round tables inside are floating and would do better with lighter (and more tables). A new FF+E refurbishing would improve not only the elegant quality of the hotel but also the operations. b) I know the casino is necessary, but it takes away from the elegance of the hotel.

Very good experience at Sofitel Montevideo. The hotel is stunning, starting from the reception hall and outside views and the restaurant. The room was ok for a hotel of this category (not very happy with the bathroom, although the shower was very good) and the service was uneven, with a very good attention at the restaurant dinner and lacklustre at check out (long line with only one employee attending) and the spa. Nevertheless we will be back!

We stayed in an ocean-facing room, which was nice with the exception that out bathroom shower seemed to have detached from the ceiling. While this did not affect it's use, it's an odd look in a hotel of this caliber. Also, the check in process is quite lacking. When we checked in the evening, there was only one person on duty who was helping someone else and finally out porter had to check us in, very strange. Also, there is no true 'concierge' on duty. We stayed here for a total of 4 days and the whole time there was no actual concierge. I needed assistance in mailing out some post cards (something I always have the concierge do for me) on my final day and there was no one to assist. With the random staff that seems to manage the front desk, I was no comfortable just leaving them to be mailed out with anyone, and so was unable to send them out. Also, the ATM in the hotel is in the casino, so you will not be able to access it in the mornings and afternoons when the casino is closed, which is odd. The building itself is beautiful but sadly the service does not meet the mark. The room service menu needs some work as well - the bread always arrived cold and items are not accurately reflected on the menu. My husband ordered the rice timbale which turned out to be just white rice packed into a bowl and not the Italian 'timbale' style. This was after he was told by the person on the phone that the dish consisted of rice and vegetables. Luckily, after we complained, we were given french fries as a substitute, but again, another reason why I note that this is not 5-star service to begin with and certainly not what I expect from Sofitel.

As usual, my experience was simply spectacular. From the warm and very genuine lobby welcome by Rodrigo and Geraldine, to the special chocolate cookies and kind note left in my room by Luciano, to the cheery wake up call each morning from Martin, to the very gracious and professional room service each night by Xavier, and finally to the incredibly kind and helpful porter service of my VERY heavy and numerous bags by Gerrardo and the amazing Gabriel - the entire team works together to make a guest's experience really spectacular. Thank you Team Sofitel Carrasco for another wonderful stay - you are like family to me!

I have the immense luck of being able to travel all over the world throughout the year for different reasons (work and pleasure). Among the dozens of hotels I have been to, I am certain to state that Sofitel Montevideo Casino is the one that provided the most exclusive and unforgettable experience by far. From the first to the last employee we came across, they were really devoted to make our stay unparalleled. Maria José (Assistant General Manager) and Guillermo (Maître) stood out among all of them, adding some perks to the experience that made it even more impressive. Thankfully, we can say we left two good friends at Sofitel and I'm sure we will cross paths again in the future. 200% recommended.
