Fantastic service from check in to check out. We were lucky to have a room upgrade which provided everything we needed. Would have been perfect apart from one guest who kept slamming doors throughout the night but that was not the hotels fault. Location is great being a very short walk away from the town centre. The breakfast was hot, plentiful and delicious. Coffee to take away was available if you wanted it. Thank you to all the staff. We will return again.

My stay had a 'hostel' feel to it. Large rooms but with slightly tatty furnishings, curtains that came adrift when you pulled them, bed lights that didn't work and only a sheet on the bed. It made the price seem not such a good deal.

Due to our historic heritage, we have had some difficulty in the installation of air-conditioning into our bedrooms. We have introduced various standards to help minimise the impact that this has on our guests experience including sheets on the bed along with an option of a duvet which is stored in the wardrobe. Our bed side lights have the switches underneath the light itself which I am sorry did not work for you. We are also in the process of refurbishing a number of our bedrooms and bathrooms so I do hope that we have the opportunity in welcoming you back again in the near future. The hotel room was difficult to access. The 'lobby' was small and crowded. The breakfast room was average.

Have now been visiting The Dolphin in Southampton for more than three years on an (almost) monthly basis. The Staff are so welcoming, extremely efficient and helpful. Only ever had good experiences at the Hotel since we first visited. Unhelpful staff. Trying to drag heavy bags up and down stairs, through tight doorways with heavy doors. The place looks like a fire trap in areas. Wouldn’t stay there again.

Very good value but there was no hot water for a shower on the first night. It was only available the next day. Breakfast was enjoyable with good service. We would stay there again. We were impressed with the facilities for our Hearing Dog.

Staff were friendly on arrival. Quaint historical room, understandably small. Carpet was soiled and rippled up in waves, perhaps as a nod to the seafaring town! There was no wifi, no information in the room. Bathroom had nowhere to put a toothbrush, let alone a shave kit or hang a hand towel. Understood the wait for hot water, but taps were dodgy and the “hot” water never really arrived and the temperature in the shower was very unstable. Nowhere to open cases, luckily this was not an issue as it was our last night. Very noisy as the path was a well used cobble thoroughfare, and as it was very stuffy with no window that opened, this meant resting in our room with the door jammed open with a suitcase. Preferring not to sleep with a fan made for a hot and stuffy night as no window could be opened. The bed was lumpy and uncomfortable and quite small, possibly due to the size of the room, which is understandable. The noise stopped at night, however it was not easy to sleep due to the light in the passageway that could not be blocked out. This was quite disturbing for a nights rest before a very long flight. It did however aid in waking very early next morning. On check out, we were told we still owed money for the room. The room had been paid in full using cash and membership points several months prior to our visit. We explained that no, this was not the case, and that on checkin we were informed that there was no further charge. The gentleman on the desk insisted that we owed money and this was causing some distress, particularly after a rather ordinary night’s sleep. Finally a second member of staff came into the discussion. I mentioned that we had a print out of the account in nil balance, this had been disposed of once we had acquired our room. We were asked to produce this, so I returned down the passageway, unlocked our room and retrieved this from the bin. At last, validated as not highwaymen at large at all but rather, honest travellers, and loyal members of the Accor group. Charming and interesting history, great it is preserved, sadly a very disappointing experience when we had chosen a Mercure to ensure a comfortable final night in the UK

Central hotel with cruise parking

Stayed one night pre cruise and found the hotel ideal. Close to shops, pubs and restaurants . We were upgraded to a large room (201) and it was nice, clean and peaceful with tv and tea making facilities. The only downside is a lack of hot water to the shower but I am sure that could be easily remedied. Breakfast was filling and transfers to the cruise terminal on time. Our car was parked in the same place I left it and not moved off site which was pleasant to find on our return. Would stay again if staying or cruising in/from Southampton .

Overall very good ,lovely large room, staff very good,have stayed here before and would stay again. However I felt the parking cost expensive in relation to previous visit.

After a Hospital visit we wanted somewhere to stay that was central, to see Southampton instead of travelling home in rush hour. My husband had investigated the car park before leaving home, but even so it was difficult to find. It was only on the last evening that I read the board and found that you had an information booth, having this pointed out when we checked in would have been helpful. Room clean and comfortable, Restaurant food and service good.

Three problems which I would not have expected in a hotel of this standard. (1) On first night hot water did not work, due to 'boiler problem'; not fully fixed until next day. (2) Fridge in room did not work and had flickering light when opened. (3) Outside the hotel, I spotted a spiked pigeon deterrent hanging loose off a drainage pipe, over the main walkway used by guests, which had not been noted previously by staff. Not easy to fix, but a further 'feature' of our stay was singularly creaky floorboards in the outside corridor, which ran immediately behind our bedhead; that is, the offending floorboards were literally only inches from our pillows. Unfortunately this was also the main route for several rooms to get to/from the lift. Some noise in an old building might be expected, but this really should have been addressed by the maintenance department. To their credit, your staff were sympathetic, but they should not have had to deal with such issues in the first place.
