usually first class hotel with very good service and accommodation, but unfortunately on this stay the people in the next room 319 very noisy till around 1-30am and when you are up at 6am this is the last thing you want.

The hotel was lovely, the room was clean, the staff were friendly and the food was good . We had a beautiful walk to the angel of the North (only 3 miles each way) We did not end up using the spa as we ran out of time.

Stayed before here and is a nice hotel, good rooms and welcoming staff. Ate dinner and the food was very good. As with the Mercure brand you get what you expect, good service and good value. Wish the driving range opened at 7.00 a.m. though would have been good to hit a few balls.

Got a very good deal at hotel on boxing night and next night.Everything was very good.Enjoyed using pool and driving range.Good breakfast lots of choice.All staff very pleasant and helpful.Would certainly recommend hotel

I stay every other week and normally all is ok and I get my preferred room that I request on my booking. The last 2 stays have seen someone I don't recognise check me in and not to my preferred room. I have also had to ask for my complementary drinks voucher as a platinum card holder. On the last stay I asked if any upgraded rooms were available and I was told no. This wasn't a confident no so i went to my room and checked online only to find exec rooms were available. I did highlight this to the hotel but I was told the online booking wasn't real time which I find incredulous.

« Wifi problem lasted for days »

I almost had to leave this hotel, since they could not fix their wifi for several days. It did not work anywhere in the hotel, including the lobby - I used the bar's wifi at 2am to finish a work project.

« Hotel Accomodation made week long training course bearable »

I was staying in the hotel while attending an intense week long health and safety course. I stayed from Sunday through to Friday and never had the need to leave building for the six days as everything I needed was catered for. The food in the Carter & Fitch smokehouse was excellent as was breakfast and lunch in the Orangery. The hotel and room were clean and the rooms very generous in size. Overall a good stay and would most definitely return for social purposes.

« Long way round »

Steps everywhere you climb four steps up ten meters or so later you climb four steps down, this happened several times. It was like a maze trying to get to the room. Never used any spar facilities because of how difficult it was to navigate around the hotel. Room a good size but dated, stains on the materas on the fold down bed, pleased my son never saw it until after he slept in it. Stains on the counterpane around our bed noticed all this the day we left, never bothered to report it as I felt nothing would have been achieved by this. Staff friendly but seemed more interested in smoking. One of the corridor smelt of cigarets.

Hotel has large comfortable rooms. Quiet until the extraction fans get going for breakfast. Restaurant is quite lively and serves a good variety of food. Layout of the rooms takes a bit of getting used to. Staff very helpful.

« Typical Mercure - Not the Best but Adequate, maybe better than the average Mercure »

Mercure seem to focus on hotels from other hotel groups, purchase them when they are "over the hill", do some refurbishment. This hotel is somewhat dated, or of a period. Their restaurant had been closed in the evening and used for a bus party. The only restaurant open was their franchisee Carter & Fitch that specialised on "American" style cuisine and portion sizes. This meant that my choice was a little limited and exhausted after three nights. The reception staff were very good when on duty, sometimes a wait was required. Never did the golf, wished I had given it a try, next time I will as it seems to be reasonable value for money. Overall OK and intend returning.

Everything from check-in to check-out 1st class. Room was spacious, clean and well equipped. Huge comfortable bed. Nice bathroom with great shower. Hotel is in a good spot to be able to reach all the places of interest. Would return there if visiting Newcastle.

« Depends on the room you get »

I have been stayed a couple of nights per week for the last 4 weeks so have seen 4 different rooms - 305, 301, 144 and 133 and feel that I am in the position to comment that it does really depend on the room. Some of the rooms have been refurbished (305 & 310) whereas the others (144 - Exec room & 133) haven't. Whilst the latter rooms are clean enough, they are old and old fashioned and the large beds are two singles zipped together so there was an uncomfortable join in the middle. The newer rooms are very nice and comfortable. That said 305 & 310 look into a central courtyard so there is no view...other than other rooms. This is via some patio doors which I wasn't so keen on. Each week I have ordered room service or ate in Carter & Fitch. Not a bad word to say here, food has been excellent and service awesome! The staff there are really good....very friendly and deliver excellent customer service. The check out last week wasn't great tho! about half a dozen of us needing to check out and only 1 person on the reception desk....ten minute wait to check out isn't acceptable. Overall I will continue to stay here each week. I like it but the room allocated does impact the overall experience.

Cold smelly and awful experience. Room wouldn't get warm smelled moldy. Offer a heater. Thx. Tried to changed rooms. Hotel not fully booked but no chance The restaurant was full of loud yobs telling and carrying on. Food was greasy over priced and slow.

Reception staff are confused about the Accor Hospitality programme for Gold status members. We were not offered a welcome drink when we stayed there in August (6guests) three rooms. Neither was our membership card awarded the points that we were entitled to. Had to fight tooth and nail with Accor customer services to have the points restored. The same exercise was repeated by the hotel on the 28th October 2016. No welcome drink staff confused about the Accor hospitality programme for Gold status members. Situation slightly better when we stayed there on the 4th November 2016 and after intervention by Mr Martin Hall General Manager. Staff were a lot more attentive for our last stay on the 18th November 2016. Still waiting to have the points credited for our stay from the 4th November to 6th November 2 016!! There was general lack of soundproofing for the rooms especially on first floor. At night we got woken up by noises resembling like a herd of animals in a stampede in the corridors many times over the course of our 4 stays. One night we were woken up 3.30 in the morning by the fire alarm. Our 2 year old grand daughter never went back to sleep again. When we questioned the reception staff all they said was a guest had switched the fire alarm on!! No apology or compensation of any sort.

I use this hotel as it is local to where I, periodically, have to work and it has a reasonable gym with a small pool and sauna, I don't have long enough to make use of the driving range and golf course. Overall I like the hotel! It is reasonably priced, if you book in advance through the Mercure web-site or app, and the room are fairly spacious and well equipped. The points which stop me giving a higher rating are: 1. The bathrooms, in particular, are starting to look worn. The temperature control on the shower was very stiff to adjust. 2. Breakfast is expensive (like all hotels)! Sufficiently expensive that I never have it and grab a bacon roll and a coffee from the local Costa or Greggs.

The quality of the room and food during my 1 day stay was satisfactory however the SPA is a health and safety issue. Within 10mins of entering the SPA my daughter started to have breathing troubles, skin rashes and stinging eyes. After several complaints, the SPA supervisor added additional water to the SPA and opened a outside door. Response from the hotel manager confirmed higher than normal levels of chlorine in the water and air but the warning for everyone is, the corrective action is a fortnight away!

Extremely disappointed with our room at the start but a satisfactory ending. Therefore, although room was upgraded and this was excellent, our star rating for sleep quality and room room is based on the first room!
