As a Platinum member i was not offered an upgrade due to you being full because of Reading Festival whereas my friend who checked in 10 mins later and a Gold member got one. When the receptionist was challenged i got a made up fob off response. The lady behind the bar really couldnt be bothered either. This used to be a good hotel, what's happened? Im unlikeky to ever return

Friendly helpful staff, comfortable room, the bed was a bit too soft. The reception staff offered to carry my luggage up to my room - I did this myself because I wanted the exercise. Internet speed was adequate. Room temperature was on the warm side but I understand that the building is listed and as such it would be difficult to change its thermal behaviour (e.g. roof insulation or reflective roof coating to stop overheating in summer). Since I have stayed at the hotel several times I know what to expect and am very satisfied with the service and the location of the hotel.

It was ok. Room was a bit dated. A fridge but it didn’t have anything in it or work. The flat roof outside the window was a bit cluttered with rubbish. The toilet bowl was filled with foul water and faeces upon occupying the room.

It was very hot in a room with no air con with the only opening window over the main road. Had to suffer a noisy fan all night which didn’t really have the desired affect. Then was surprised not to be informed that breakfast wasn’t included until I checked out and charged £12.50. It would have been nice if reception had informed me of this at check in or at least the waitress when I was asked for m room number when coming down for breakfast

We stayed during the Reading Music Festival, mainly for my daughter and her friend. Good location for travel. A bit expensive but I guess that's supply and demand prices during the festival. It's a historic building with extensions built over time that makes it a maze with stairs. No lifts , be warned. Tired rooms that need TLC and creaky floorboards. But what do you expect given the age of the building. We didn't have the breakfast or meals as you have Riverside dining just around the corner. Okay experience overall.

welcome was warm Very disappointed by the breakfast. How can you for example serve “grill tomatoes” which are actually a tomato just heated a few seconds in a microwave? Warm water in the shower early morning. Cold water if you have it after other guests

I'm a regular guest and always thoroughly enjoy staying at the George. However, I arrived later than usual on Monday (around 10pm)...tired and hungry after traveling from Scotland. There's no 'take-out' food shops between the station and the hotel and, by that time of night, the nearby restaurants were closing up. So I checked the room service menu and was pleased to see a few items available 24hrs. I called reception to ask for a sandwich and was told they'd call me back in a minute. 20 minutes later, no call back, so I called again. I was then told they'd have to check and would call me back. Another 25 minutes...no call back and still no sandwich. So I called again and was told 'ok' but can you come down and get it from reception yourself? I have no problem with collecting a sandwich - but it really shouldn't take three phone calls and nearly an hour to get one. On a more positive note, it was very nice as well as very welcome for this hungry traveler!

Not worth the money

The service cannot be faulted. The room though, was very simple but clean. Certainly not worth the price we paid. There was no air con just a little fan. Our television didn't work and there were no cups etc for coffee. The breakfast was mediocre at best and the chef might need a lesson in scrambling eggs and then not cooking it to within an inch of its life. My omelette was overcooked too. I am aware that as it was a bank holiday weekend and Reading Festival weekend prices tend to be raised but this was not good. We aren't the type of customer who would trash the room etc. I am in the hospitality trade so know what is half way decent.

Noise was horrendous sounds like everything was coming from within the room. first from the local pub til 3, then the dray Delivery. must have drop the kegs from a height around 5 then the Oracle shop deliveries started from 7 all round no sleep at all oh and No welcome drink

Very comfortable stay, more staff needed for breakfast, had to ask for refill cups no cutlery on table, wasn’t sure where to sit and how breakfast worked. There was only one lady and I had to go and find her! However once food arrived it was nice.

Only stayed for one night. It doesn't come up to the standard of other Mercure hotels. It's a shame because the building is fascinating the way it meanders through the various extensions that have been added over the centuries. We didn't get to eat there so can't comment on the food. The location is excellent being in the centre of Reading. There is no onsite parking but Queens Road is only a few minutes walk away and will only set you back £7 for 24 hours at the weekend.

The Wi-Fi is very hit and miss and once you have stayed there it automatically connects on your return but doesn't connect but at least the TV was working this time
