« Very pleasant one night stay »

Clean, well appointed room. Possibly unusually large as it was wheelchair accessible (I'm not a wheelchair user). The staff were lovely and very helpful, I arrived late and even though I was there 2 minutes before the restaurant officially closed, they still provided a meal for me. One downside was a lack of air conditioning, this isn't usually a problem in the UK but my stay was in the middle of an extraordinary heat wave. A fan was provided in the room but these can only move warm air around. As my room was on the ground floor and had limited direct sunlight, the room didn't get too warm.

Great welcome and lovely staff. Room wasn't business class - two small beds, cramped, no air con during very hot week, bathroom ok, that room was similar to B&B in Reading for half the price.

« Excellent location, but not suitable for a summer stay »

The location is right in the centre of Reading so was ideal for us . We booked two rooms and one was upgraded to a good size double. The room that wasn't upgraded was quite small but both rooms were well maintained and clean. The weather was hot and as there is no aircon the rooms were above 35C when we arrived. Bizzarely, the windows were set so they could only be opened a small amount. Given that none of them can easily be broken into or fallen out of, this is not a suitable situation for non-aircon rooms. The staff were helpful in getting the windows to open fully and I reckon by the time we went to bed the temperature had reduced to around 30C. Fans are also provided but they didn't have much strength. While the weather was unusually hot, I am sure that the rooms would still be too warm, on a normal 21C English summer's day. It was nice to sit in the courtyard although a few pots of plants could make it nicer and the bar, which I think has been refurbished since out last visit, is still not really in character with the lovely old building. Overall, good staff, rooms OK but I would strongly advise against staying here in summer.

Not nice to see black long hair caught in the shower curtain on entering the bathroom Water was very very slow going down drain hole which left you standing in water- not pleasant Only 3 milks so had to go to reception for more Staff on reception were delightful at all times Far too any baked beans served on cooked breakfast that looked liked they’d been reheated and no butter on poached eggs on toast hence very dry It was all ok but only ok doubt I would stay again though the reception staff were very very good.

« Far too warm in an enclosed space »

Recently stayed for 2 nights on the second floor. Room was ok by standard, apart from the heat. This heat was unbearable, and there was no way to cool the room down. Yes, there was a small fan, which only circulated warm air and the window barely opens which contributes to the lack of fresh air also. This fact did not help during the night where my sleep was hindered due to the uncomfort of being overly warm. The poor sleeping experience due to the heat may cloud my overall judgement of the hotel however i cannot move past this and this affected my overall 2 night stay massively.

« Hot room and uncomfortable bed but the bathroom was clean and the staff friendly and helpful. »

I was disappointed by how soft and lumpy the mattress was. The corridors were hot and stuffy, as was my room. The fan provided could not be put close enough to the bed as it did not have a long enough power lead to reach the sockets - it was also old and produced almost as much heat as it did air! However, the room was and bathroom were clean and the staff on reception were friendly and efficient. If the only problem was the heat I would consider staying here again but I'm afraid the mattress quality has really put me off.

The stay was fine apart from the exceptionally hot room and lack of sleep ad a result. I stayed on the evenings of 2nd and 3rd July in room 207. The window has a safety catch (understandably) do little air came in to the room and the fan didn't help much ad it circulated the hot air and was noisy. I appreciate it is an old hotel with no air con but if there was anything else that could be done to control the temperature it would make for a better experience.

« Wonderful hotel in Reading! »

Prior to this night at Mecure in Reading I had stayed in London for two nights. In London the bed was hard and leaned over to one side. Toilet and shower were outside in the hall. It had no air-condition, so the window had to be open. And I could not sleep because of all the noise. But when I came to Mercure Reading I felt I came to hotel-heaven! The bed was very comfortable, and the curtains made the room dark at night. A nice bathroom with a good shower. And the new windows kept the noise from the street. I slept very well, and I did not wanted to leave after just one night.

« Not enough positives to make us want to stay with Mercure next time. More like a pub B&B. »

Being a first time visitors to the city, we found it difficult to navigate the road system, spot the hotel & look for suitable parking before checking in. We were told before hand that the parking was just ‘around the corner’ but had to pay to park on the roadside in order to walk to the hotel to get the name & postcode. I accept that the small size room & the lack of air con would be difficult to change in such an ancient building but there’s no excuse for a sagging bed & a decidedly average cooked breakfast. On a positive note, the hotel was clean & the staff were helpful.

Nice hotel, well located and reasonably priced for our get together. It was rather hot when we stayed but the hotel had kindly provide fans which helped. The hotel is right in the centre of town, great for shops and going out but this means you do get some noise
