Quite poor. Whilst there is a certain charm of being in an Olde-world building, there is a fine line between being quaint and simply poor. This hotel is the wrong side of that line. The entire building (including room floors and halls) creak and move with the slightest of pressure and the walls are not soundproofed in any way meaning that you can hear everyone passing in the corridor, or are unable to go to the bathroom without disturbing your partner. There is no air conditioning (only a fan) so opening the window was the only way to get the room to a reasonable temperature (and I like a warm room!). Unfortunately, I was then woken at 6 am by deliveries and a lot of noise in the courtyard. The general room decor and finish was poor, including light bulbs missing in the bed side lights, and poorly finished decoration. The evening menu was abysmal, so much so that we only ate breakfast there and decided to eat out each night. There is a very nice restaurant that looks to be part of the hotel, unfortunately it isn't. The physical menu was shabby and dated, and the selection of evening meals on offer was certainly not what I have come to expect from Mercure. All in all, I have stayed in better prepared, better kept and better presented 1 and 2 star hotels. What a great shame.

Rude night staff, boiling hot noisy room with tiny uncomfortable bed, breakfast was rubbish.

Night porter refused to help me with my luggage despite me arriving at 0030 and not wanting to make noise carrying two heavy pelican cases up to the fifth floor through tiny staircases and multiple fire doors. He said it's your luggage and left me to it. Room was very hot, the cold water came out hotter than the hot tap to start with so who knows what's going on there, noisy fan and windows straight out to the street with drunk people shouting outside. Failed to get a wake up call at 0800. Breakfast was a sea of beans and one single hash brown and two bacon they forgot the sausages. For £141 it was one of the worst value hotels I've ever stayed in. I will never be back and dread the next time I am put upon a Mecure hotel. I would have been better off sleeping in my car.

Bearing in mind the George Hotel is a very old building and therefore no air conditioning, on the weekend we arrived it was a very warm day and hence the room was very hot. Whilst a fan was in the room this didn't really have much effect and therefore had to sleep with the window open. The room overlooked the courtyard so when people were around in the courtyard at 5.00 a.m. the conversations (sometimes loud) could be heard in the room. The breakfast was only average. The room looked as though it could do with a makeover and whilst the chef cooked breakfast to order, I seriously do not know how long the baked beans had been on the hotplate!! Themushrooms were overcooked, as was the poached egg.

The bedroom was good, a little dated but bed was comfortable. To be honest, from what i saw at a friends hotel they were staying at, the George Hotel is a little over-priced compared to competitors... Especially as my stay didn't even include breakfast. If I'm honest, I will probably book somewhere else for my next stay in Reading. The member of staff on reception was very friendly though!

The hotel receptionist was great, in fact, she was fantastic....But; we couldn’t sleep on and/or in her and also couldn’t eat and/or drink her. So essentially the booking didn’t serve its purpose. But maybe next time the hotel will. If we pick a different one.

Not a very good hotel

Although it is a Mercure, for sure not Mercure quality. The building is the oldest in Reading, but this is too old, old carpet, creaking stairs, too hot rooms even in UK and May. Also he bed was not comfortable. For me is a no go hotel even for a couple of nights.

Awesome breakfast. Good bar, very good location. In room 218 if I go to the bath room then switch to power the light on is completely weird position = use the right hand to open doors and and you need to pull the doors and the switch is on the right-hand side outside of the room = annoying as you need to close the door to switch on the light. Once you open the door there is not enough space...

This is a nice hotel, with character. Location is extremely covenient, although car parking is an additional cost. I found the room a little warm for my liking.

Hotel could do with some serious modernisation - As an example I didn’t quite expect there to be a significant gap between my hotel room door and the floor...meaning anytime someone walked along the corridor outside I could hear them.
