Room good. Late bar service terrible .. the bar closed at 11 without wary . Service/ choice / cost of drinks from night manager at reception very disappointing.

« Comfy bed and great staff »

Stayed here for work for two nights the rooms was of a good size with all the facilities I required the double bed was comfy and first time in a few weeks I woke without a bad back. The breakfast had a great selection and cooked items to order were very good. The hotel restaurant had a reasonable selection at a reasonable price three courses and drink for a little over £25 also can use the restaurant at the Royal Tandoori a few doors away which was amazing. A good stay and most importantly a good night's sleep.

Terrible. Really bad night's sleep and overall experience was horrible - not at all keeping with experience I expect in mercure: - weird smell in the corridor - room incredibly tired with stained carpet - mattress sank in the middle so much I felt like I was falling through it! - too much noise from drinkers outside and people walking past the room - breakfast very poor (limited healthy options - Muller yoghurts are not healthy!!!) and thought the waitresses engagement style was quite rude. This was completely out of sync with my experience at other Mercures. While I appreciate it's built on an old Tudor pub and some of the complaints above are not easily fixed, Mercure should seriously reconsider with this establishment is in keeping with their standards elsewhere.

Check in was good, dinner was ok although the staff didnt understand English very well and I couldnt have a Blue steak on Rare, Medium or Well because that was what was on the till and was then given a butter knife not a steak knife to eat with. The bedroom was hideously hot considering it was October I dont even want to think what it must have been like in the summer! The windows opened an inch and then I had to close them because the noise from the highstreet was too loud to leave the windows open.

« A little disturbed! »

My room was on the corner of the stairs, so every person walking past, or congregating for a chat or domestic before heading to bed, was a disturbance. My room key didn't work on arrival so I had to go and get it re-set. The fire alarm went off before 6am - great to know it works, but this was due to someone leaving an iron on, and the result was that we didn't need to leave the building. Unfortunately there was no-one announcing the false alarm, just one poor guy on reception repeating himself a million times. Then followed a hotel full of people walking past my room again... :-/ The room smelt like fish, and my window was too high to close without climbing, plus the blind wouldn't lift past a certain height which meant I had to climb under that too! The bathroom had obscured glass next to the shower, but no curtain - as this overlooked the courtyard I had to secure a large towel into the window fastening to preserve my dignity. Whilst obscured does obscure, when it's right next to you, it leaves very little to the imagination! Appreciate this is an old building, and very beautiful too. Not sure what I expected, I'm generally easily pleased, but there were too many events on this occasion to push me into 'gripe' mode. Reception staff were pleasant, breakfast was tasty and there was a good selection (although the blunt 'what do you want?' from the serving staff could have been a little less abrupt and demanding!) Only stayed here because it was on the company approved list. Will perhaps look at alternative options next time.

Room was too hot, not enough sockets, couldn’t use the portable fan as well as the TV, bed sheets weren’t changed, bathroom was cleaned very well, dirty spoon, orange juice was disgusting. Evening room service and food was very good.

Mercury George had helpful and friendly staff The building was old but comfortable The food served at the bar was burnt chicken Caesar’s salad which I did not send back but couldn’t enjoy Stairs is an issue as I had heavy cases Also one of the rooms I was put in had a damaged door and the corridor had a horrible smell which I had to pass every time I wanted to get in or out of my room I was generally happy with the stay overall Wasn’t the best

Very nice and clean hotel with friendly staff; thought mini bar and room service was too expensive which prevented us purchasing and products after 11. Didnt try the indian food but had hoped to and dissapointed we didnt but next time most definitely.

I have stayed here many nights over the last year, I really enjoy the service and welcome as well as the ease of checking in and out. The hotel has a great location in town which makes working away from home much more enjoyable, there are many nice restaurants and shops near by, as well as several gyms to keep fit. Breakfast at the hotel is perfect and easy going, I can see there has been improvements to the offering recently. The rooms are quirky and always comfortable, although some were very hot in the summer heat wave. The rooms are well decorated, however some of the furniture is becoming a little outdated, I. E. Bedside tables, chairs, and wardrobes. Everything else works well for example bed, lighting, TV and bathroom. I like the mini fridges in the room. Other constructive criticism relating to sustainability would be the replacement of towels with clean towels every morning even though towels had been hung up and not left on floor to be changed, whilst I appreciate clean towels I would personally not require this every day in a hotel. Also the shampoo and conditioner bottles seem to be a lot of plastic waste. I would prefer a hand soap dispenser in the bathroom, for both hygiene reasons and to prevent a bar of soap being thrown away after a couple of uses. Some of the kettles need cleaning or replacing. The small iron and wall moubted ironing boards work well and I prefer these to large free standing boards.
