« A very hot stay. »

I understand that the George is an old building however due to the hot weather, my room was stifling and the fan provided did little to cool. Spent the night on top of the duvet, not in!

« awful »

GROSSLY over-priced and poorly specified hotel. Extremely dated bedrooms with matchbox sized bathrooms and effete water pressure from equally dated shower head. To get in the bath / shower one had to literally climb over the WC pan. Scorching hot summer's day and no air conditioning and windows only opened a couple of inches (I appreciate h&S rules apply but no excuse). Bed was a cheap 4' 6" one, open coil as opposed to pocket sprung and as for the pillows, the cheapest, flattest hardest fibre filled rubbish. Combination of heat and cheap bed meant we did not get the one thing a hotel should be able to offer its guests - a good night's sleep. What hotel in 2017 does not have air conditioning as standard? Mentioned this to Reception who explained the hotel was not allowed to put aircon in on account of its age. What rubbish. An E-mail from Manager apologised for 'inconvenience' but no there was apology of value i.e. refund instead an offer to come back and stay in a better room for no extra cost. You want more of our money! With management like that, no wonder the hotel falls so short of modern customer expectations. Had we spent £60 per room it would have been fair do's but for the two rooms we occupied you fleeced us for £250. You should hang your heads in shame. This review has been copied and will now be pasted to Trip Advisor to add to the critique. If you want to learn what a good hotel experience feels like go and stay at a Premier Inn. Much cheaper too, alas was full the night we wanted hence we happened on Mercure believing that as it was a large chain it would be well funded and its hotels would be of a high standard. How wrong we were.

« Great location  »

Great location for a night out and shopping. Beds and pillows were comfortable.

« Good but hot »

Nice stay, good staff, comfortable bed... just far too warm - no AC upstairs resulted in uncomfortably sticky afternoon and evening.

Bedroom was fine but on the small side. It was a very hot night & some fan provision would have been good

« NIce Hotel, good location. Inadequate ventilation in rooms during hot weather »

Hotel and staff were good. Location great for my purpose. The weather was pretty warm and humid, so I requested a fan which was helpful, as my room was still like a sauna. Didn't eat at the hotel.

Great location helpful staff - rooms were hot - a small fan was provided but not enough - lack of power sockets near the bed is very annoying

« Staff most agreeable but to view the weather forcast and news the morning I left was impossible TV dead!  »

The staff most agreeable they are not to be faulted my problem was with the accommodation. Sorry but just under 5ft in height and somewhat elderly to climb into a bath to have a shower is dangerous and even more so to climb out with no convenient hand grips to hold. Is the not the option of shower cubicles for any guest.

« Room was too hot and bed too small. »

Poor night's sleep because of heat in the room (even after a cloudy/wet day). This was not helped by the fire alarm around 1am.

A clean and pleasant room with good facilities. The only downside was the heat. The room didn't have air conditioning and due to the blind ring broken no air was able to get through the window.

« Great room but very noisy  »

The room was fantastic, if a little hard to find. The bathroom was huge and the room was clean and comfortable - brilliant for the price. We stayed at the hotel over the extremely hot weekend in June - and found the room to be incredibly hot, making it hard to sleep. There was no air conditioning, which we expected due to the age of the building, but also no fan despite the weather being hot over a prolonged period. The windows did open wide but the trade off was the noise outside. Our night's sleep was constantly interupted by noisy guests returning drunk into the early hours, and for at least 30mins we were kept away by a drunk couple arguing in a neighbouring room. We would consider staying again because the room was so good and the hotel is well located, but we would request a room that doesn't overlook the main entrance.

« Holiday »

Have stayed in reading many times but first time at this hotel. Value for money and close to town centre. Busy hotel so bar staff stretched. Also did not have the drink we ordered in stock. Can't comment on food as we were only B&B. Easy access to London by train. River area of town centre very good, Would definitely go back

« Average service, rooms far too hot and mattress far too soft »

No air conditioning in the rooms last week made it impossible to sleep. The mattress was so soft I can now barely walk as it has impacted my back and the service in general was average at best. I travel to Reading weekly and I will not be staying again. In addition to that I will be letting colleagues know that they should think twice before booking.
