The location and facilities were all good, but I found the housekeeping to be below average and the waiting staff inattentive.

A Nice Hotel, lovely spacious room and good breakfast

We had a nice time at the hotel. Our room was spacious, modern in decor and very clean. The hotel as a whole is nice and the period bar area is welcoming and cosy with a log fire burning. The conservatory restaurant is tied in decor and the menu was very expensive for the choices available. We chose to eat out having booked to eat at the hotel once we saw the menu. Breakfast was tasty, good choices and plenty of it. The one thing that let the hotel down for us was that the pool and spa facilities are managed by Nuffield Health. We booked the hotel so that we could use the pool as a family - we have an 11 year old son. We arrived to check in at 4pm unaware that we could only use the pool until 5 as Nuffield Health only have a lifeguard until 5pm on weekends (we stayed Saturday until Sunday am). The pool was then not available to us until after 12 noon on the Sunday as no lifeguard on duty and we had to check out at 12 noon. So no pool for us as a family on Sunday morning as we had planned. Nuffield Health's Manager said that they couldn't have any children in the pool under 16 because of health and safety regulations without a lifeguard and they had reduced the life guards hours over weekends. My son is a very competent swimmer but the health clubs rules were not to be changed. This totally scuppered our reason for being at the hotel for a family night away. Such a disappointment and such a waste of money as would have stayed elsewhere without a pool or at an alternative hotel had we known! Hotel didn't mention any family restrictions on the website relating to the leisure facilities on their website when we booked - so beware if booking as a family and you are intending to use the pool over a weekend. Hotel just says "All guests have complimentary use of our on-site Nuffield Health & Wellbeing Centre". Nuffield said that hotel guests were allowed in to use their facilities as a good will gesture but that they were totally separate from the hotel. Not quite how that reads on the hotel website.

The staff are very helpful, but the fabric of the hotel is decaying. It needs a huge investment in repairs and maintenance to bring it up to standard.

Stayed in a superior room for an anniversary. On arrival to our room the was a card and box of chocolates from the staff. Very nice touch. Room very spacious and clean. Breakfast was hot and tasty. Will stay again soon.

It is a very quaint hotel with nice well mannered staff. I have stayed before. It would be good to have a surprise room upgrade as many hotels do and maybe more tea and milk in room- even just two more of each.

A rough and ready place to kip if you need to be near Hitchin

The general condition of the hotel (inside and out) could be best described as "......well, we stopped caring about it in 1994...". The outside has a few obvious touches to help with wedding bookings (fake arbour, field of daffodils) but the parking spaces are too small, overrun with grass, poorly marked, one had a tree growing over it. The reception was small, staffed by quite helpful, non-english speaking staff, but from there it was downhill. A horrible little bar where the two, teenage, completely disinterested staff said "sorry about the wait" as they prepared a large drinks tray (he poured, she watched) and wandered off for 10 minutes whilst I waited for just a diet coke. I gave up and went out to McDonalds in the end. The bar area was shabby and even had a football screen (when did Mercure move downmarket from Weatherspoons?). The chairs were old and worn and the smells from the kitchen were everywhere in the bar/lounge/reception...uurgh. The entire place smelt old and tired, and every cheap firedoor on the way to the room was dented and bashed. The room was fine though and comfortable and clean, and the water was warm.

Loud buzzing noise upstairs constantly made it difficult to sleep, heating wasnt working, heated towel rail was broken, room service very expensive £15.50 for a bottle of water and a diet coke. Charged me for 2 breakfast even tho I pre paid, tried to charge me for other people's meals also. Would avoid in future.

Dear Manager, I felt I must contact you to discuss my recent stay at your hotel. You can see from the booking below, I stayed at your Letchworth Hall Hotel on the 26th March. I made a last minute booking via the telephone service and paid £94.05. My business requires I stay in hotels around the UK & Ireland 2 nights a week. Over the next few weeks our offices are relocating to Letchworth so I’ll be staying quite often locally. Unfortunately based on last night/ this mornings experience I wouldn’t be prepared to recommend or stay with you again. On arrival I had to wait quite a while as reception was unmanned. A nice gentlemen from your team came after around 5 minutes and was apologetic. Shortly after I was checked in and paid in full. It was around 945pm when I arrived after driving nearly 250 miles yesterday I simply wanted a shower and early night. Unfortunately the water was cold and didn’t warm up. I attempted to call the reception but the hotel phone in my room didn’t work, intact it buzzed all night. I didn’t have the energy to walk 10 minutes to reception so I simply went to sleep. When I woke in the morning, desperate for a shower, it transpired the water was still ice cold. I got dressed and informed a gentleman on reception which he claimed to know nothing about it but would look into it. I also mentioned the defective phone in the room. Following that conversation I proceeded to get breakfast. Twenty minutes later I finished breakfast and headed back to the room via reception. I was greeted by a lady this time. I enquired if the water situation was resolved. She confirmed the night before the boiler had fallen over and just moments ago had been restarted. She apologised and suggested it should be warm enough within 45 minutes to an hour. After waiting over an hour the water didn’t warm and I ended up with a cold shower. Cold showers are not something I enjoy or expect when staying in a quality hotel. I’m keen to hear your thoughts and discuss compensation. A nice setting let down by the service

Upon arrival we found that reception wasn't adequately signposted and ended up going through an entrance at the back of the hotel which led us through a lounge area. Luckipy we saw a member of staff to ask for directions to reception. I felt that the checking in process was very slow. I appreciate it was a Sunday evening, there had also been a wedding fayre and there was a big party for dinner but there was 1 person on Reception (Svet?). There was one person checking in as we arrived and another person ahead of us but it seemed to take a long time for us to get checked in. The guy had to leave reception unattended to check on availability in the restaurant for the guest in front of us. We had trouble finding room 69 but eventually found it and first impressions were good. Pretty soon we noticed a constant buzzing noise and after some investigation I realised it was the phone line so I decided to disconnect that because I was trying to get some sleep. The next morning we were woken up by the cleaning staff making a lot of noise outside our door at around 8.30. I feel like it may be because the supplies cupboard was right next to our room because I heard a lot of opening and closing of a door. We didn't have the 'do not disturb sign out so couldn't complain at this point. However, we then got a knock at the door to offer housekeeping, we suggested they come back later. There was then another knock at the door within 15/20 minutes of the first one. At this point there was no chance of getting back to sleep and we were not very happy. I also found that there was a dial or button missing in the bathroom which made it difficult to work out how to switch from bath taps to shower
