Property is not to the standards of other Mercure Hotels. The access key did not work to our room every day (sometimes even after James Hewitt reset it) and we had to walk 5 minutes to the reception via multi-doors to get to the Reception. Finally James had to give us a physical key on the 3rd day to remediate the room access issue - MOST FRUSTRATING!. Staff shortages made James work very hard to cope with the problems in the room

Our room was very spacious but one of the window handles was broken and ome curtain hooks were missing. The restaurant was lovely but by the time we got to the breakfast buffet there was very little hot food missing. My husband decided to have eggs Benedict but his muffin was too hard to eat. We have stayed with you twice before and not experienced any problems.

Annual stay for half a dozen of us for dinner locally. As always, staff friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. As always, a disappointment that no updating, renovation or improvements to the building and rooms. Everywhere is somewhat tired and lacking attention. Crumbling window ledges, windows outside cobwebbed and dirty. Pity as the location is so attractive.

Tired shabby hotel in need of major investment

I booked a suite for my wife and I, knowing the hotel is tired but thinking this would get us the best room in the place. How wrong I was... First impressions are dominated by the smell which comes from the reception hall, bar and dining rooms located in the old part of the building. It reeks of old cooking smells - from years of frying food. Really unpleasant for the public areas of a hotel. The first suite we were directed to was up narrow stairs with adoor opposite what looked to be staff quarters, and was a collection of small rooms in the attic space. A couple of bedrooms, a tiny sitting room with no windows, a shower room with no windows, a bathroom with a view of the extractor fan outlet.... terrible. Felt like staff quarters itself. Odd to allocate us this room when our booking was for two people. Suite 2 was on the ground floor in the newer part of the hotel. Certainly larger and more airy, but..... Musty smell, old carpets which were rucked, old single glazed windows that didn't shut properly , duct tape stuck over broken panes, cobwebs all around the windows (on the inside), ivy growing through the window frames. As an aside, no photos of rooms on the website, so you have no idea what you are going to get. Next option was an Executive room. New(ish) with two king sized beds. Seemed ok, if not really what I had booked. Room was warm - asked reception staff member if aircon worked and they confirmed it did. Left aircon on and went to the local pub for dinner (having got food poisoning in the Letchworth Hall Hotel on my last stay). Came back after dinner to find the room the same temperature. Inspected the bed to find old lumpy/crumbling foam pillows and discoloured sheets. Final straw I'm afraid... We booked into accommodation in pub in the village where we had eaten earlier and checked out at 8.30pm. This was a first - I have never felt so disappointed in a hotel that I have left before even staying one night. This hotel needs a major shake up and investment.

It was welcoming but noisy. The hotel was very quiet in the evening until we went to bed and found out that our room - 18 - was on a general thoroughfare and the whole hotel walked past it having VERY LOUD CONVERSATIONS !!!! Not the hotel's fault except the doors are flimsy and should seal better and that would keep out some of the noise.

Stayed one night with my wife and two dogs. Room was adequate, fire alarm went off in the middle of the night. Had order Breakfast in the room but some items including the news paper were not sent.

On checking in, our details could not be found, initially. This was solved. Lift not working. Room left a bit to be desired and quite tired looking. Carpet badly stained in places (no attempt had been made to clean it. TV remote did not work - asked for new batteries - still did not work. Requested newspaper for Saturday morning (as stated in the room booklet) but no longer available. Papers available at breakfast reception but were a day out-of-date. Breakfast fine. Saturday evening very noisy (party). Sunday morning breakfast experience, messy - overrun by guests. Staff were polite and helpful.
