Bewildering travelling in backwards on a milk float. We could see were we'd been but not where we were going! No sign indicating reception. You know where it is and we do eventually. Great rooms, good service and the staff were very friendly and helpful. Overall we had a lovely time and would recommend it to friends and family.

« Perfect Holiday »

Our stay at the So Sofitel was amazing. The hotel is so beautifully laid out and we loved the open feel of the rooms, restaurants and spa. We found the water around the restaurants and bars created a very relaxing atmosphere. The staff were incredible and a real asset to the hotel and we thoroughly enjoyed the food. The bar and restaurant staff were very friendly as were the reception team and the guest relations team. Everyone went the extra mile to make our stay a truly memorable one and we would love to come back again.

Everything was awesome except that the flower flasks we're kept empty in the room. Either the flask must not be kept or flowers should also be kept inside.

« Beautifully relaxing stay with great service. »

The service from all staff was first class. The food was great and the hotel set in beautiful gardens in a peaceful location. the food at dinner although buffet style was excellent, good variety and generally restocked regularly. It is always invidious to pick out members of staff who stood out for us, particularly as generally the staff were helpful, polite and efficient. They were also very 'smiley' which makes the guests feel happy and relaxed. However, Angele and Neelam in La Plage and Nisha in Flamboyant were particularly brilliant. The lady who was at the Le Club desk and Reception also was great, I'm sorry to have forgotten her name.

« Beautiful Place with Extremely Friendly and Professional Staff »

We had a great stay at the Sofitel in Bel Ombre. The setting was fantastic and we truly enjoyed it. The staff was truly outstanding, always greeting us with a smile and a passion to help and serve. It seemed like most people knew our daughter's first name as of day 2 :-) Loved it!

« Happy with facilities, poor staff experience. »

We had booked to stay at SO Sofitel for the last leg of our 3 week honeymoon. Did not feel like we had a 5 star experience from a customer service/staff point of view. Lovely setting and some good facilities. Our arrival set the tone, we did arrive later in the evening , we were picked up from the drop of point and taken straight to our room, the staff member told us we had to go straight for food (no time to freshen up after a long day travelling), I was wearing smart chino shorts (I was aware we had to wear trousers for the evening meal) but the staff member just said we had to go so I assumed as it was late and the restaurant was closing soon that they would just let me in, we then go to the restaurant and was turned away and had to go back and get trousers on. We were never congratulated on our wedding and was not made to feel like newly weds. Our first experience at ordering drinks at the bar wasn't great, we ordered our drinks, the bar staff did not say hello, no smile, no conversation, we waited a while for our drinks (seemed to be a general trend, aware its a busy hotel and that cocktails do take a while to sort out - ? need more staff), I went up to the bar and said how long our drinks would be, the barman pointed to the other side of the bar and said your drinks are there, they had been sat on the far bar side and I had to go collect them myself, the barman just walked off. In the main restaurant area we were often sat ion tables with no full cutlery, one breakfast we had to wait approx. 5 -7 minutes for s spoon to have cereal, I generally had a latte with my breakfast, sometimes it would come with a saucer and spoon, most of the time it didn't. We had a couples massage as part of our deal, they were not able to accommodate this so had to have sepearte massages, again aware this could be due to capcity so this was understood. We were also offered a special honeymoon meal as part of our package. Information around this was vague, was told by reception that we just need to tell them what night we wanted it and that we just turn up anytime. We arrived for our meal at Le Plage, we sat in the normal area, the waiter came up and said we were booked for x1 land menu and x1 sea menu, we did not have a clue what this was as nobody had told us we had this choice, we assumed it was of the menu. The waiter had told us reception had booked us this choices - we were never told. Our room was lovely, the outside bath plug was not working so we had to get someone out for that, the water isn't hot for the outside bath (not sure if it was designed to be cold). We were not left complimentary water each day which was not a huge problem but again expect more from a 5 star hotel. One of the staff members - Ranjeev was really helpful, he remembered our names, remembered our favourite drink and would come and ask us if we wanted drinks around the pool/beach. Other than that we found the service very adequate and as mentioned before not 5 star. The food was good for mass catering and the pool area, lounges, beanbags etc were excellent and we never felt crowded.

« SO disappointing - SO many things wrong »

The staff were all extremely friendly even if some were not experienced or trained to the correct level. The Pool Suite was not a suite - and the pool was only a plunge pool - not as advertised on the website and a case of mis-selling. The room was good to look at from a design point of view but was totally impractical with not even a proper indoor seating area. The bed was comfortable but the unnecessary surrounding "ottomans" were a hazard and obstacle when trying to get into or out of bed. The bathroom was excellent except for the toilet with a glass door that did not close on any of its four sides, affording no privacy. Food in the main restaurant was poor and repetitive despite the supposed theme nights.and lacked any true Mauritian food. Early morning breakfast was a disaster with no competent staff in place when the buffet opened and the buffet never completely set up. Dinner at La Plage was good but the limited menu.again meant repetition if used with any frequency;. Day housekeeping was good although turn down service failed badly on 3 or 4 occasions.. Generally the hotel seems confused as to what it is supposed to be - a Spa , a quiet retreat, a package tour base for sightseeing or trying to be all things to all people. We di d not appreciate at all being told 2 days before departure that our guaranteed 5-00pm check out booked 10 months in advance and paid for would be cancelled due to a problem in the hotels system. Luckily Joan backed down from this stance. and we stayed in our room.i

« This place exceeded our expectation »

Iour experience was exceeded by our expectation.Staff got to k ow us and would always talk to us .When we would be walking to the restaurant or anywhere the love you showed us made us feel extra special.I was chatting to one of the trainer waiters and it is. Lear you have high expectation of all your staff with the amount of training you give them. From the information we were given on arrival to the minute we left we just could not fault anything .

It was more incredible and amazing then I expected. Specially the fact that every waiter and waitress knew everything about the customers and the staff communicated between each other. That is a sign on a very good leadership.

« pleasant. but room for improvement (in terms of quality of the room and response from staff) »

Facilities are good, yet our room had a few issues. the motorised separation between the bed and walk -in wardrobe was dirty, the lock to access the garden was stiff and the armouring in the front door (on the external side) was showing some signs of tear. Staff was very helpful and courteous. However, a few days before I checked in, I phone reservation requesting that a special arrangement (flowers on bed) be made as this was our honeymoon stay (we got married on Sunday 29 Oct). I was told that needful will be done but I was disappointed that my request was not met

« Great food, terrible service! Not a 5-star standard! »

We book a room at the So Sofitel end of October via marideal.mu! I'm Mauritian and my wife is British and we can as part of our honeymoon! The welcome was ok with a text written with some leaves on our bed but that was it! Throughout our stay, the staff didn't make us feel welcome at all! Totally the opposite they made us feel that we were not welcome at the hotel! At every meal, the staff always asked us at least 3 times for our room number while going to the tables next to us where non-Mauritian couples were sitting to make sure they were having a good time! Not once we were asked how was everything. Upon check out a member of staff asked me at reception if we had a good stay, when I replied "it was ok, nothing special to add", she simply smiled and didn't try to find out what went wrong! We do got the feeling that Mauritians are not very welcomed there and the staff are not well trained for a 5-star hotel! We booked for a full-board package there and on top of that didn't an extra £300 but despite that we didn't feel very welcome! Apart from the food which was excellent, all the rest was poor and we will definitely never come back!

« Hugely enjoyable holiday in a beautifully located hotel staffed by extremely hospitable people. »

Overall we had a wonderful holiday and enjoyed the experience immensely. There are a number of areas where improvement would be advantageous but the people make the establishment and the Mauritian people as a rule are very very hospitable. When we first arrived we were initially slightly disappointed with our room. Although a clever unique design it had quite a tired, sad feel to it. Many of the very angular features of the arched space were deeply stained and floor had many cracks. There are two external courtyards, one totally enclosed to the rear with a shower and one to the front with an outside bath. Both were beautiful spaces but looked unloved with many weeds and the bath was very grubby with rusty side panels. Our check in was carried out in the room and although very friendly, lacked in detail. Once unpacked and rested we explored. I have to say we were very impressed with the hotels setting. Beautiful natural landscape with sympathetically designed buildings many thatched with sugar cane foliage. The whole complex is on the beach with the breakers clearly visible a couple of hundred metres over the calm lagoon. The beach ran the whole length of the hotel and there were kayaks, glass bottom boat and pedalos available. Swimming was in a restricted area because of the coral and the sand was difficult to walk on due to the sharp broken coral. We would recommend taking swimming shoes. As we settled into holiday life we found that the facilities were actually excellent. The food was first class and available from two restaurants and the bar at various times. Warren in the bar was one of the best cocktail makers we’ve experienced and his friendly professional approach was exemplary. The main buffet restaurant always had a good selection and available at all meal times, We were particularly impressed with service from Melissa, Praveen and Yannick. The a la carte restaurant was also good but required a booking and had quite a restricted menu. It had a romantic beach setting with an excellent view through palms to the sea. We were on an all inclusive basis and this offered most of what you would need for food and drink. However there were a couple of odd rules. One did not permit alcohol in the rooms unless purchased outwith the all inclusive deal and the another was that wine taken at the table could only be ordered by the glass and not the bottle. You could have as many glasses as you wished, just not a bottle. Each room had a mini bar. Our deal allowed us to have anything non alcoholic and it would be replenished everyday. We rarely used anything other than water but were surprised that we had to ask everyday for it to be replenished. We met Lawrence, one of the managers one evening and he asked if there was anything the hotel could do better. We mentioned the mini bar issue and we received our replenishment that day. The next day it was back to us having to ask. This is no criticism of Lawrence. We spoke many times and he was extremely helpful in so many ways. This was also true of Yannick Balancy. He communicated with us by email before our visit and was also instrumental in arranging a celebration we had during our stay. We took advantage of the spa for a joint massage. That was excellent and the two therapists were first class. The spa area is again, beautifully designed however we did find that the steam rooms and haman area to be quite tired and in need of refurbishment. The staff were all very attentive and although it appeared that the hotel was understaffed at times nothing was too much bother to them. Food and drink were available at the pool and most areas of the beach however there tended to be too few staff serving and the layout was such that every order had to be retrieved from the main bar or restaurant involving excessive travel for the staff and often long waiting times for guests. The erection of a fully kitted pool bar in that area would resolve the problem without the need to increase staff numbers. We would congratulate Jeffrey for the effort he puts into keeping the guests happy and providing a cheery service despite being ran off his feet. Sarvesh and Dylan were also very attentive. Throughout our stay we were guided, most days, to various events or offered assistance by either Raj or Anne Lise at the desk adjacent to the restaurant. They were never pushy, always polite and there if you needed anything. We had an anniversary while there and Raj helped to arrange a cake and a spectacular light display in our room. We would have no issues recommending a stay at So Sofitel and would indeed consider returning ourselves.

« Relaxing holiday »

Hello, Our stay was overall very pleasant. We very much enjoyed our room, the two restaurants (including the dining experience), the beach and pool area. The personnel was very friendly and accommodating. The property is very beautiful and very well maintained. From the personnel, Yannick from the "La Plage" restaurant made our dining experiences even more enjoyable (and we went there a lot). He was very charismatic and professional, always greeting us, paying attention to our needs without neglecting the other guests. In a particular evening (the tapas evening) the lady that was taking care of the tables was clearly overwhelmed and messing up the orders (she was not to blame though, but the poor organisation of the tapas evening) and guests were starting to get very annoyed with the waiting time. Then is when Yannick took the matter into his own hands and started helping her and also managed to distress the guests while their food was getting finally served. I also enjoyed a lot the evening when there was a Dj invited to play in the "La Plage" restaurant - the teenager (I think it was the same tapas evening). He was rocking the place, best music mix I heard in years. By the way, would you be so kind to please let me know his name, or if he is on social media? He is worth getting some publicity, very talented young man. Also, the idea of having live music at the bar was also a very good one. The singers /bands were very talented. It was a very nice way of ending the day. On the opposite side, I did not enjoy at all being interrupted so many times during the breakfast by a particular personnel (I did not catch his name) asking us each time our room number, our names and introducing himself as if it was the first time we were speaking, then asking us about our plans for the day. And to be honest, you could see that he was not actually interested what were our plans if that did not include buying an excursion from him. This should be all :)
