Son’s wedding

Laura was excellent I have sent a message direct to head office saying how lovely she was. Room was spacious and clean. Uncooked sausage let the breakfast down. The bar had only one person n all night. VERY slow struggling with the till.

Disappointingly below the usual standards of the Mercure brand.

Jerome N. Couples - 15/05/2019 AccorHotels certified review

My wife and I use Accor hotels throughout Europe because as retired hoteliers we generally find the standards to be excellent. Perhaps because of our background, we may be a little more aware of hotel expectations and my observations below are purely intended to help Accor to maintain their reputation and market share. This traditional English hotel with huge potential has, regrettably, an air of neglect and gloom. It is not just the need for a refurbishment, but also the poor cleaning standards in the public areas. All the wood panelling and the carved wooden staircase are thick with dust. The fire grate in the lobby lounge is dirty. Overseas visitors must leave with a poor image of English hotels. The bar is harsh and unwelcoming, and the price of a 175 ml Shiraz is 67% higher than the nearby competition. Our room was spacious, comfortable and clean, albeit a little tired. The young lady housekeeper on the second floor was friendly, polite and helpful. Breakfast was adequate but strangely lacking in logical presentation with items spread over several tables. On the second morning, we followed a coach party of overseas guests in to the breakfast room. Many breakfast items had gone and there was no effort to replace stock or crockery. However, our experience at reception was of a different class. We found the receptionist, Margot, a French national, to be efficient, helpful and charming. Let's hope it is catching. The hotel enjoys a great location and architectural stature. It could be fabulous.

great location but hotel dark and dreary definitely needs a refurbishment

we enjoyed our stay as great location for everything. some brochures at reception of places to go would have been nice. found the reception area very un inviting but the staff were lovely. breakfast was good, the voile curtains in our room were filthy and I don't think they had ever seen water. The tv took a lot of working out, for anyone not technical would have been very frustrating. Lovely comfy and clean beds though. Gardens were lovely but need a little TLC, We arrived Thursday the ashtrays in the garden were disgusting and looked like they hadn't been emptied for a week, they were eventually emptied Saturday. Even though the hotel is very old and very historic it could be amazing if decorated with the in keeping of its splendour by being a lot brighter thus creating some ambiance and atmosphere which it lacks at the moment. Some nice static air fresheners wouldn't go a miss either.

Convenient location but a very tired hotel.

The room was very old and not overly clean. The radiator made such a noise it had to be turned off just to be able to sleep and the toilet didn’t flush properly. Additionally the double bed was simply two singles pushed together and the hairdryer blew its fuse when we tried to use it. The building itself had a lot of charm/character but was in the most desperate need of renovation of anywhere we’ve ever stayed. Breakfast was a buffet style affair so was largely lukewarm and had been sat there a while meaning it was very expensive for what it was. A cafe just two minutes away from the hotel did much better food for much less money so personally, if the breakfast is an option I would leave it out.

Great service

Lovely service provided for our group visit, special touch to have prosecco in my parents room for their wedding anniversary. Comfortable lounges perfect for a family gathering. Bedrooms could use a little modernisation, but overall perfect for a group family stay.

Check-in and out was fine and friendly; the room suffered from the noise of other guests owning to thin walls and doors; towels are a bit skimpy; the bar is badly run; breakfast was satisfactory but not outstanding.

A close family member was very ill and the most helpful Receptionist found us a room at the last minute. We had a great nights sleep, an awesome breakfast and some good memories of being a customer 50 years ago!

Everything as superb as usual

Pleasant Stay

Pb Couples - 01/05/2019 AccorHotels certified review

Had a really pleasant 2 day break at this hotel. The rooms are rather dated and could do with a refresh but the staff more than made up for the overall appearance. The only thing we would recommend, however, is more bar staff when there is a wedding being held in the hotel or a system whereby coffee can be ordered from reception rather than having to queue at the bar. We had a 30 minute wait just to order two lattes and then another 15 minute wait before we received them.

Firstly I must say that all the staff I met at whately hotel where absolutely lovely. But our room number 22 smelt of damp, all the windows in the Room and bathroom where nailed shut ? The bathroom extractor fan didn't work. The Room was stifling hot. There where ? Cleaners cupboards either side of our Room door with padlocks and large metal bars , and the staff opened and locked these doors 4 times early Sunday morning before I decided to give up and get up , each Time sounded like they where trying to open our door so very disconcerting !! Also the corridors going to our Room had extremely noisy floorboards which kept us awake. Also the pillows where very hard .

Not as good as last stay

We where not informed that a wedding was taking place on our visit and the restaurant was not available. Very disappointed as it is a first class restaurant and we had difficulty in finding a suitable venue to dine.

Enjoyable stay

Centrally located, reception staff friendly and helpful. Room a little on the small side but clean, bed comfortable. Bathroom large, shower easy to operate and pressure good. Carpets in the corridor shabby but clean. Did not have breakfast as felt £10, each, too expensive. Car park entrance very narrow, beware!

The majority of the staff were great and made us feel very welcome. I appreciate the hotel is 17th century but I really did feel rather dark and tired.
