Staff are always very pleasant, polite, happy and obliging. Room is always clean and comfortable. Ideally situated and good secure car park with good spacing even if the entrance is slightly narrow but our VW T5 van goes through

« Pretty average hotel, tired and a bit smelly in parts. »

Check in was friendly and efficient. Room was in the 1970s block at the rear of the hotel which smelt dusty in the corridors and musty in the rooms. Window surround was filthy and mouldy. The double bed was actually two singles pushed together. Bathroom OK. Bar was another 1970s conversion disaster in what was once obviously a nice and historic building. Weird that the information sheet provided spoke fondly of various original features that had been lost. Nothing that knocking the 1970s part down at the back and £2m wouldn't sort! Breakfast was fine as was service. Overall for the price paid it was OK but don't expect a special experience. Perhaps the rooms in the historic part are better?

« Old Style Charm and comfort. »

A very comfortable room. We especially enjoyed the view of the gardens and the windows allowing fresh air. Roof beams of oak also gave an unforgettable "Oh to be in England" moment. Overseas travelers from the "New World" would thoroughly enjoy the Whately Hall its comfort and its history. I recommend it.

Very customer service, were happy to book a taxi for us and inform us when they arrived, which was a relief as we had to go straight to a wedding after arriving. Appreciate the check out being as late as 12pm too!

« An Okay place but nothing special »

This is a 2-300 year old property with a newr extension on the rear dating from the 1960s or so. the rooms are spacious and well appointed but very dated. Staff were friendly and helpful but the breakfast was overpriced at 15.50 pounds. There was also a discrepancy in the pricing method as I paid about the same rate as my sister, but her room rate included breakfast which mine did not. i could get no explanation from staff as to why this was. Not a good way to treat an ACCor Hotels (owner of this hotel) member.

« Fairly satisfactory »

A nice room with a good very large comfortable bed. Everything about the room was satisfactory and staff were polite and helpful. Our only issue relates to 2 groups of guests who spent the whole time in the main (breakfast) room walking around talking very loudly into mobile phones and getting in the way and generally disturbing the other guests. Perhaps the hotel could consider making the restaurant room a no mobile phone zone. People could easily go outside to make calls.

« disappointing »

I have stayed here before 3 times over the past few years, I have normally rated my stay very highly. This time I was offered an upgrade so whilst I have always been happy with my room I thought it would be interesting to see what the upgrade consisted of. Potentially the room was good, good size, well appointed but I have had better rooms without the upgrade. This room had great features, lovely stone fireplace, original windows etc, quite quirky in its own way. The problem was it was a bit grubby, dark, even during the day, there were net curtains that looked really grubby and could bot be opened. The bathroom was ok but again the bath was stained, the shower fitting was damaged, overall just disappointing, perfectly functional but not what I would have expected as an upgrade. On a positive note the dinner was excellent as was breakfast, there is a nice atmosphere in the hotel, staff all very helpful, internet access better than some more contemporary hotels. It upsets me to give this a poor review as I say I have been before and was looking forward to my stay, maybe just a blip but the room was not as good as my previous standard ones.

« Traditional old property: Comfortable »

Mostly good but the old traditional room on the street frontage was very noisy throughout the night: does traffic never stop at all over 24 hours?! In the many previous stays at this hotel I have always had rooms facing the gardens at the back and would request that again. I would not use this hotel with a street facing room.

« There is a new part to the hotel »

When we arrived at the hotel we were given a room which was not in ‘Whately Hall’ but in an adjoining run-down 70’s block (the garden suite). We were very disappointed not to be in the beautiful 17th century building as described on the website and as the photos showed. The management needs to put some images of the real hotel that most guests will be staying in - otherwise this is misselling. Although the room was well furnished, with a large bed, the building itself is in dire need of renovation. There was not sufficient ventilation of fresh air in the room due to the windows not opening much and bathroom fan broken - a fan does not suffice as it merely spreads the stuffy air around. The tea and milk in the room had already been used and had not been replaced. After having previously stayed in many Accor hotels and a few mercure hotels, this particular one does not meet up to their very high standards. This experience would not make us want to visit this hotel again, nor would I recommend it to anyone else. I tried explaining our issues to the receptionist but I’m not quite sure he understood so would much appreciate if management would look at these problems directly.

Good Bedroom, friendly reception staff. Entrance to the car park is a bit of a challenge but there is nothing that can be done with that. Although there was a wedding reception on the night I stayed, I was far enough away for noise not to be a problem. Lift is a bit rickety Cannot comment on food or drink as didn't use those facilities All in all an enjoyable stay

staff friendly and helpful but the hotel looks dated and could do with a 'spruce'. public areas could look more inviting .. it's a shame to walk through 'break out' areas for meeting rooms with tea and coffee littered tables
