Arrived to check-in just as the power cut occurred. Told in somewhat impolite terms to go away and come back later. Tried to ring the hotel several times to check on the situation - absolutely no pick up by the hotel on each occasion - most unimpressive.

« Lovely room but disappointing meal at the restaurant and very poor breakfast . »

The online booking process was very confusing. I booked a double room with half board and was only given it for one person! I then had to pay extra for my husband on arrival. We will go back to the hotel but avoid the restaurant. The breakfast was one of the worst we’ve had at a hotel, but the hotel is well located and the room was very nice.

I was disappointed. The rooms aren’t like advertised. My room wasn’t ready even at 3. However the young man did fret and get me an upgrade to compensate this. However, it meant I was in a single bed rather than a double or larger. Then one night something in the sheets was making me as itchy as anything and I couldn’t work out what it was. It looked extremely outdated. Now I know it is a old building but I stayed in a Tudor style building earlier in my trip and they manage to make the place feel cosy with the luxury of TV without compromising on the heritage of the building. Where here it felt they tried to pay homage to the heritage with two paintings that were too small for the walls and some 80s style furniture. This place needs a major overhaul The location was good. The staff were good. Was just disappointed.

The towels are thin, the pillows hard, the breakfast inedible, the street noise loud, the suite arrangement illogical. The bedroom corridors have a kind of fusty smell. What else? The mattress is too small for the bed. There are two hairdryers, but no glasses for water. The water bottles are not replenished. The staff manage to stay cheerful, friendly and professional - well done!

« Requested upgrade which was very noisy and bad quality. »

A lot of the staff had not been trained and they did not know what to do, especially the receptionist. This is by far the lowest quality Accor group hotel I have ever stayed at and I am very disappointed as this stay was supposed to have been a pleasant surprise for my wife.

Very pleasant room and bathroom. Card swiping process at the entrance door to the Annexe and the room a bit tricky to get just right, but Reception staff were happy to assist. Very comfortable lounge/bar for post-theatre drinks and reading time during the day. A pleasing range of choices for breakfast, but my coffee could have been hotter.

Room not as requested on booking. Alternative room made available after some discussion. Room was damp. Inconvenience caused and am very unhappy and disappointed. Will never stay at a Mercure again. Would like a refund please.

Room, bed, staff were excellent food not so good- in fact II would only put it at 4. Prosecco had no bubbles,pasta meal was very basic and pudding (eton mess) was bad. I also checked 3 times that I could get a sandwich in the bar after going to the theatre, at 10.30 I was told I would have to wait until 11 and then use room service. I also enquired about booking 3 nights in Oct and the cost appeared to have increased by 1/3

F A O James Lys First our sincere thanks for a wonderful complementary stay at The Shakespeare. We arrived early to gain car parking and to take an M&S picnic lunch by the side of the Avon. There was stacks of car parking space and your reception staff could not have been better. To our surprise and pleasure the room was already ready for us over two hours early. Our thanks to your housekeepers and reception teams. My wife and I both have an eye infection, - nothing serious. I went up to the room to bathe and put ointment into my eyes. Naturally I went to use the sanitary bin in the bathroom to dispose of the waste, only to find that it was already over half full. On trying to call housekeeping on the phone the button for this didn’t work. Nor did the button for reception. I went downstairs to reception who apologised and dealt with the matter promptly and courteously. Excellent service. Our thanks for the “nibbles” that we found on returning to change before dinner (at Lamb’s on Sheep Street, also excellent) and the theatre. Our main reason for the visit was to attend on King Lear at the RSC, The performance could not have been better, thanks for arranging such excellent players and script! Being a long play we felt tired on our return, so went directly to our room neither “passing go”, nor the bar. My wife’s teddy bear was delighted with the comfort of the four poster! He is now nagging for same here at home! The following morning all went swimmingly in bath and shower. Just one little down-side. Your breakfast team staff were superb. However the main course ingredients were mainly cool to cold. Tomatoes were wonderfully seasoned and cooked, but cold. The eggs could have been better done as the Americans would say “sunny side up” by finishing cooking the white that is over the yolk (but that is me being pedantic); they also were cold. The bacon fat was seriously underdone and it also was cool going on cold. The hash brown were cooked beautifully but on the cool side. The sausages, delicious, were the only warm thing on the plate. None-the-less breakfast was a great meal and enjoyed. We checked out to visit Mr Shakespeare’s birthplace (great “instant actors” as usual) and Mrs Arden’s farm on our route home. Again our thanks for a wonderful stay. We hope to book again (paying this time) next time we visit one of Mr Shakespeare’s plays.

Overall the hotel was nice, bar and waiting staff were good (An average rating because I felt the chap on reception ignored my complaint). The bathroom was in need of a good clean and ultimately a refurbishment. The room felt overpriced for what you got. The biggest let down was the parking. Upon arrival we were ushered to a space then asked to re-park so that another car could be squeezed in. This meant we physically couldn't exit our car from the driver side. I complained about this at reception twice to no avail. Upon exit the same situation we had to enter our car by the passenger side. For me it put a dampener on the stay.
