« Seen better days... »

We were housed in the Annexe which was tired, dirty and in need of urgent attention. The room was barely clean with thick dust in places, curtains hanging off, chipped and worn paintwork, filthy windows and black mould round the bath. Then they had the cheek to charge us extra for our dog because it would mean additional cleaning. The staff were friendly enough but powerless. And when we asked for our room to be thoroughly cleaned on the second day, they didn't do it at all!

« Could do better »

Location is great, bedrooms and in particular bathrooms dated and in need of modernisation. Shower has only 2 modes, hot or hotter. Reception staff friendly, however bar staff in restaurant could not be more unhelpful if they tried! On the positive very large beds and aircon in the room which made the room reasonably cool on a very hot weekend.

Dear Melissa H Thank you very much for your review and whilst I appreciated the positive aspects of your stay, I was concerned to read your comments regarding the bar staff and the shower temperature. I would appreciate it if you could contact me directly on h6630-gm@accor.com so I can address your comments directly - I very much hope you will be in contact. I hope that the positives outweighed the negatives and that you will be returning soon. Regards James Lys / Manager

« Enjoyable visit »

have stayed in the Shakespeare on several occasions and have always enjoyed the stay. The staff are unfailingly friendly and helpful and the rooms clean and spacious. Normally we stay in the main building but this time we were put in the Garrick Wing. The room was spacious and the bathroom good, especially the shower. My wife is wheelchair bound and have to say that we found the Garrick Wing was not ideal as two heavy doors had to be negotiated and the room was difficult to get into. For wheelchair users I would recommend that you contact the hotel prior to your visit as soom parts of the hotel are more accessible than others. Nevertheless, will use the hotel again as we always enjoy our stay.

Dear edward w Thank you very much for your constructive comments and we will certainly bear them in mind for your next stay. We generally try and accommodate wheelchair users near our lift in the main building, and we shall try and make a better job of implementing that policy in future. We look forward to your return soon! Yours faithfully James Lys / Manager

« Great Hotel but some extra information and help would have made it an Excellent stay »

great hotel right in the centre of town. Rooms nice and modern but retaining old charm of the original building. only complaint is the lack of parking, the hotel has a small car park and first come first served basis. We arrived late in the day and unfortunately no spaces were available. We entered the car park via a barrier system, my wife went to reception to ask where we should park and told about the nearest NCP car park, she came back to the car and we tried to leave via the barrier to find the car park. The receptionist neglected to give my wife a code to raise the barrier so had to go back to reception to obtain the code. We then found the recommended NCP car which has an electronic sign saying closed? We found an alternative car park and walked back to the hotel advising the NCP car park was displaying closed, the receptionist then advised it is open and the sign has been incorrect for some time. Why this was not mentioned when directed earlier is more than annoying. I accept the lack of spaces at the hotel, unfortunately the lack of good information to get your car parked was very unprofessional.

Dear Vdub1966 Thank you for your review, and whilst I am pleased that you generally enjoyed your stay, I was concerned to read about the poor manner in which your car parking was handled - this will be improved. Thank you very much for highlighting this issue and I trust it will not deter you from returning to us in the future. Best wishes James Lys/Manager

This hotel is ideally situated for a visit to the theatre - five minutes walk - and there are several very satisfactory restaurants nearby. The hotel provides an excellent breakfast service and comfortable lounges and bar. Parking is available onsite for an additional charge.

« Beautiful hotel with great location but poor cleanliness »

I stayed with my family during 1st week of April 2017. We had 2 rooms that were in a very quiet area of the hotel, as requested at booking. Hotel is gorgeous with a lot of charm. Not surprinsingly in such an ancient building, rooms were small but well designed. However huge disappointment upon arrival first at reception with person hard to understand and then with arrival in the room where the bathroom had obviously not been cleaned as there were fesces spread on the toilet bowl !!! and the sink was also filthy. This is totally unacceptable for any hotel and all the more so for a 4 star hotel.

« Excellent service as standard »

Car malfunctioned so didn't arrive until 2 in the morning. Night porter checked car park for space and came out in the rain to unlock the gates. Beautiful room. In the morning couldn't move the temperature gauge on the shower, mentioned to the cleaner on the way to breakfast. Problem resolved by the time we returned to our room. Staff checked later to see whether we were happy with the shower. Through out our stay ALL staff were friendly and nothing was too much trouble. Will certainly visit again in April

« Pleasant but some grumbles »

Room was comfortable and breakfast was good. However, the bathroom was very cold and the shower on both mornings was only tepid. Although it was a cold weekend, the hotel heating system should be able to cope. Double glazing the bathroom would help. I would also expect the hotel's hot water system to cope with the number of guests having showers at the same time - other hotels manage it!

« Somewhere different to stay »

The Mercure in an old historic building in Stratford is a real experience. The rooms are very characterful and have modern touches without loosing the appeal of the historic ambience. Useful car park - but small so you may not get a space. Bathroom was enormous and perhaps could have had better lighting over the sink. Breakfast was good as usual for Mercure hotels. Bar service also good.

« The Shakespeare »

A return trip. It was good to see the manager at such a high profile. He was friendly and helpful. The Privelege room was comfortable and clean. I would suggest that the breakfast could be improved. A better selection of fruits and yoghurts as well as menus on the tables offering dishes which could be available. Also, it would be beneficial to the overall ambience if trays used by guests were removed more quickly from the corridors.

« A very enjoyable weekend »

The Shakespeare Hotel is perfectly situated in the centre of Stratford and very close to the main RSC theatre as well as the many good eating places. We upgraded to a Junior Suite in the oldest part of the hotel and were very satisfied, especially with the many complimentary extras such as soft drinks, newspapers and toiletries. There were also free drinks and canapes downstairs in the bar to welcome us. All in all a good choice and a hotel to be highly recommended.
