« So much potential disappointment delivered »

From the obnoxious receptionist to poor food was just the start, only saving grace was the French barmen and the female manager Angi who both did their best to rectify a lost cause.

« Good value but won’t be rushing back »

Myself and partner (late 20s) purchased a deal from wowcher. Great value deal. Staff are welcoming and smiley however few and far between meaning we had to wait for drinks etc. Reassured our room was executive however needed a lick of pain as room and furniture very shabby and very cosy. Also no refreshments such as water and plastic cups Hairs noted in sink and bath - like a man had shaved. Food was lovely couldn’t fault and our server was very attentive however I am a diabetic and lacked diet or low sugar drinks The Spa was nice and welcomed the next morning. Staff very friendly and knowledgable. Massage very good and relaxing however the thermal suite smelt like sewage, their were children jumping in causing the majority of swimmers to leave the pool and a 1/2 hour massage cut down to 23 mins due to form filling in even tho I arrived 15 mins early. Great potential and willing staff but not quite 4*

« A Birthday Present in a stunning venue slightly tarnished by a poor customer relations experience from managers »

The Venue is outstandingly beautiful with fantastic facilities and extremely friendly and helpful ordinary staff members. The bedroom was very comfortable, the pool and spa facilities very pleasant, the grounds were a delight to view, the bar and lounge outstanding and the breakfasts and dinners, served in the gloriously restored "Oak Room" restaurant were amazing. When combined with the location and places to visit nearby, had this been the total experience, it would have been a perfect three days birthday present for my wife. However, on the first night in the restaurant, a Thursday night , things did not go entirely as they should have. Having arrived at the restaurant at the time booked on checking in to the hotel (a daily necessary process not explained to us before arrival, or, at the time of checking in, multiple night visitors beware) we were seated by a friendly young man who then took my order for an aperitif while we perused the menu. I ordered a small 1664 beer, having noticed Kronenbourg beer on draught in the bar earlier. This eventually arrived as a full pint, after the starter and wine. The young waiter was very apologetic and honest admitting that he had been a little confused over my use of the term 1664 instead of Kronenbourg, and had forgotten I had asked for a small glass not a pint. Apologies accepted and subsequently only being charged for the small beer ordered, this minor hiccup was pleasantly resolved and dealt with in an honest and friendly way. He was, like all other junior staff, exemplary in his efforts for the rest of our three days, a true credit to the hotel. The same could not be said for the most senior member of staff serving in the restaurant that night. When our waiter had taken our order from the set menu, my wife had ordered a starter which I had not seen on the menu. Thinking that I had merely been inobservant, I remarked on not noticed this starter on my menu, but the order was taken without any quibble, so all seemed fine. However, when the starters arrived mine was as ordered, but my wife's was completely different. Thinking she may have misread the menu, slightly confirmed by my not seeing her choice on my menu, she decided to eat the starter given her, but was still confused over how she had got this wrong. In due course the senior waitress on duty in the restaurant came over to enquired if al was ok. I mentioned the issue of the size and arrival time of my aperitif and was told that the waiter was new and still being trained (I'm not sure if using his status as a new trainee for an excuse to the customers for poor service is really fair to him or really professional). My wife then raised the issue of the different starter. She quoted several other items she had read on her menu and, when the senior waitress produced a menu, which was identical to the one I had seen, my wife pointed out several differences between that menu now in front of her and the original one she had seen. The waitress was adamant there was only one menu and that my wife was mistaken, suggesting she had perhaps looked at the a la carte section or misread the menu. The inference that clearly came over was one of my wife must have been seeing things or was a little confused! My wife and I might now be 62 years of age and we may not be as physically sharp as we were twenty years ago, but we are not losing our marbles or turning senile just yet! The waitress subsequently returned and informed us that they had checked all the menus and could confirm there were no rogue menus, all were the same as the one I had seen also there was only one menu, anyway, so it would have been unlikely that an alternative, possibly old, expired, one would have crept in unnoticed. Matters would have rested there, all be it a little uncomfortably, were it not for, a little later, just prior to us looking at the menu to choose our deserts, we noticed a minor disturbance at another table across where a larger group eating. We mused that perhaps they'd been given a wrong menu causing some confusion. When shortly afterwards a completely different waiter, an older gentlemen, brought the menus to us we jokingly mentioned the menu issue to him and suggested the notion that maybe they too had been given a wrong menu. To our surprise, he admitted that this was indeed the case, there was a rogue menu which had accidentally been given out at that table. He also said this was surprising as all the menus had been rechecked earlier on and nothing incorrect discovered. My wife, now annoyed at the earlier response and the inherent slight on her mental abilities, then proceeded to accurately point out from memory the differences between the two menus. The episode left an unpleasant taste on the evening, the first night of my wife's birthday surprise, not improved by the need to almost mug a member of the waiting staff to order a coffee at the end of the meal. All would have been chalked up to experience, if a little irritating, and largely forgotten by the following evening, were it not for the next night's negative encounter with restaurant management. The meal itself had been delicious, breakfast was fantastic, the facilities at the hotel very enjoyable and all the ordinary staff friendly, hospitable and helpful; including the gardener who we chatted with as he watered the hanging baskets by reception the next morning. It was therefore incredibly annoying when we arrived for dinner at the 8 O'clock time agreed at check in the previous day, to be greeted at the door of the restaurant on our second night by the Operations Manager who told that we had not booked a table and it would have been impossible for us to eat there at the time we thought had been booked, anyway and why had we not booked a table if we intended to eat in the restaurant? Following the previous evening's insulting debacle, I saw red! This woman's attitude was condescending and officious. She suggested that the issues we had experienced were our fault, not hers. She stated she was unaware of the previous night's problems as she was dealing with a hundred extra guests she had not been informed of and so had not been in the restaurant. Why were we told this, that's not our problem! She then told me that reservation paperwork would have told me that I needed to reserve a table each night for dinner. I pointed out that we had booked through Secret Escapes. My paperwork merely said that the hotel Knew we were coming, all we had to do was check in at reception and all would be taken care of. There was no mention of reserving tables anywhere and reception did not tell us of the need to separately reserve a table on the second and third nights of our stay, we therefore naturally assumed that the time agreed was for all three nights. The manager's response was that "Secret Escapes" often make mistakes (an unprofessional remark about a commercial partner in our opinion), this wasn't the hotel's fault, we should have known and booked. Eventually, we were booked a table for 20:30 and confirmed a booking for the same time the next night. While we waited she paid for a drink each in the bar, which certainly helped smooth things. A postscript to this was that the rogue menu seen previously by my wife and denied the existence of now turned up in front of us. It was now Friday night and when this menu was pointed out to the Operations Manager she confirmed that there are indeed two menus, a weekday and a weekend menu. My wife had somehow been shown a weekend menu by mistake. Why was this not admitted at the time? Following our exchange the Operations Manager was very friendly and helpful, for which we thank her. One additional, unrelated , suggestion; both menus were excellent bar two things,1) not everybody likes broccoli or asparagus, just saying "green Vegetables" is not helpful, 2) on the desert selection, please add a simple two balls of ice cream. Often a simple desert is all one wants to finish with.

Lovely second visit to the hotel. Hotel was overall very clean, staff were welcoming. Rooms were nice and clean, although they could do with air conditioning being added on their next refurbishment. Breakfast and evening meal were both of a good standard. Joanne gets a special mention for her fantastic service when we ate at night. Looking forward to our next stay.

« Too hot & no price adjustment »

Decent staff, large room and character hotel but due to its age the room I had at front was incredibly hot. I did not sleep at all. Windows are restricted so there’s no air flow. I told the receptionist on check out who said merely said it’s a problem with an old building. My other family member likewise had poor sleep in another part of the hotel. No attempt to offer a reduction on the room or make an adjustment on the restaurant bill. I will be returning to the town in matter of weeks and will need multiple rooms for a family function. The simple lack of even offering a nominal adjustment added to the room heat means I won’t be considering this hotel. I’m sure in the winter it is lovely.

« Impressive place but failed to deliver on service and standards »

3 night stay, 1st room carpet was soaked, 2 nd room tv not working, restaurant very slow with lots of mistakes over orders despite pre ordering. Some staff clueless. 2 and half hour taken over serving dinner, another night saw confussion over orders and my meal served well over 20 mins after everyone elses in my party leaving me to eat my meal alone. Check out no room docket ready had to wait while a search on the computer system was made. All my complaints fell on deaf ears and it was left to junior staff to deal with. Restaurant manager Angela avoided me.
