« Decent hotel. »

Surprised that there was no complimentary water in the room. When I went for a shower in the morning found that I had 2 shampoos & a small soap bar but no shower gel. Get all 3 in other Mercure hotels I have stayed in. Too late to do anything. Room was a decent size and comfortable.

« A good stay »

This was our second stay at the Southgate, the central location is great, room was a good size, staff friendly, breakfast was better than most. The only issue was the temperature in the hotel, it was just so hot everywhere. We put the air-con on as soon as we stepped into our room - but at least that facility was there. After eating out we intended to enjoy a few drinks at the bar but found it was just too warm and we retreated to our room instead and this was the same for breakfast time. No issues were mentioned on check-in. Other than this, our stay was good and due to air-con in the rooms i don’t think this would stop us staying again.

« Potentially comfortable hotel but with several things not so good »

We liked the position of the hotel and thought the hotel itself was very nice, if not a little jaded in places. We ate in the restaurant because the menu looked so good and we were impressed by the environmental slant. However, the food was dreadful and we wished we had gone out. The pillows were uncomfortable. The fitness centre was adequate but a little jaded and had no bottled water for sale

« Very satisfied with our stay. »

We booked the hotel in n a recommendation from a friend and would pass on the recommendation to others. The staff were polite and friendly. The room was comfortable and had everything we needed for our overnight stay. The hotel made sure all our extra accessibility needs were met without any problems. we were made to feel welcome from the moment we booked in. Breakfast was a pleasant experience, with plenty of choice at the buffet. Staff were accommodating and efficient, making sure we had everything we needed.

« The excellent and attentive staff made our stay very special. »

Fantastic stay, we stayed in a Privilege room which was well appointed and had lots of extras, I loved the Krups Nespresso machine so much I’ve since bought one! I stayed in a Mercure hotel in Paris on business for 2 weeks a few years ago, and the service levels are very high.

« Fab hotel, great staff - lovely stay! Will be back ! »

Loved it. Four of us stayed for one night, both had fab rooms and comfy beds. Loved the decor of whole hotel. Lovely food. Only one criticism is paying and extra £12.00 for parking as I wasn’t expecting that.

« Not as good as expected »

Check in slow, and disorganised. Car park exit not working properly. Room not great. Asked for a quiet room. Given one at the back. Didn’t get to sleep until 2 a.m. due to the noise from the town. Obviously, the hotel have no idea of which is quiet or not. Carpet in room shoddy with marks all over it, wallpaper round windows peeling off. Too much emphasis on the restaurant and downstairs areas, not enough on the rooms.

Reception staff were excellent as were all staff encountered. Privilege room was disappointing, tired scratched furniture and very threadbare carpets,great bed and nice clean bathroom, shame there was no bath. Enjoyed the swimming pool, Breakfast disappointing from a hot food viewpoint,food left far too long under heat lamps,eggs like rubber,bacon looked to have hardly seen a grill. Coffee good and cold food selection good,staff excellent,at £14.95 hot food needs to be hot and freshly cooked not sat drying out under heat lamps. £12 to park is a disgrace after paying £120+ for the room. Summary-Great staff,great bed,great leisure club,very clean. Rooms tired and in need of refurbishment, threadbare carpets in a 4* hotel are not acceptable,parking fee is a total joke and breakfast buffet needs better supervision of quality of hot food available.

Comfortable but the hotel is starting to look tired, the fixtures and fittings are chipped, damaged or scuffed. The decor of the gym is appalling, the men’s changing rooms are in need of complete renovation and the pool area has rotten window frames. The breakfast experience is average at best and I understand you charge £16 per person!! Outrageous price. Staff friendly and helpful though and great location

Cleaning and dining room staff, and manager, most friendly and helpful. Initial reception less so, and v slow despite there being no queue. Room spacious and comfortable, electric shower excellent. Food a bit disappointing.
