Not our best stay at a Mercure. When we got into bed after 11;00 it seemed very cold. Tried to turn on the air-con but failed - did not seem to be working (confirmed by staff in the morning) so decide to make do with extra blankets - none available in room and so had to make do with house coats. Expected some sympathy from recetion in the morning but none available or discount as we did not report fault to reception in the night who could have changed our room - no thanks in our night clothes. THIS came on top of the management refusing to accept part payment of our bill by use of Le club Accor loyaltypoints collected. This was despite making it clear of our wish at time of booking and at check in

Having stayed at this hotel on a regular basis, over time I have seen the quality of the service deteriorate. On the last trip the standard of food on offer for breakfast was very poor, and not worth the cost. The bedrooms are due a refit, in particular the quality of the towels are very poor.

Great location . Excellent staff . Good room with comfy beds . Great bathroom Negative: terrible quality towels and they are too small . Obviously cost cutting measure . Breakfast buffet : not very attractively laid out . Tea and coffee served at table by flasks ...awful ! Again could feel cost cutting measures .

Fantastic staff and great service. I stay in lots of hotels up and down the country with my job and this one is one of the most satisfying hotels I've stayed in for a long time. Staff very friendly and helpful in all aspects. Room was very nice and modern. I will book again very soon.

Nappies ad banana skins in the waste in. When complaint was made there was no action taken by staff. N management or duty management available.

We have stayed at your Hotel four times and each visit the standard of service is going down. On this visit the receptionist didn't ask for my credit card to be validated. When I went to order some drinks I wasn't able to charge them to room so I had to go back to the reception. Outside our bedroom there were dirty glasses which were there until the following afternoon. I spoke to the maid and said it wasn't her job. She said the person who collects them went sick. I wasn't happy and she just moved the glasses on the opposite side. I felt someone going pass can at least collect the many dirty glasses. In the bar area on Saturday evening there wasn't enough bar staff to manage the bar. The staff there were working hard and were efficient. Except the barman rang out of tonic and I had to wait over ten minutes for him to come back. There was no option to say I will be a few minutes I will bring the drinks over. Also there was a group of people who were noisy and had drunk a lot and it is not what you expect in your standard of Hotel. There was no one there to clear the tables as glasses and plates were on many of them. We had two meals in your Hotel Restaurant and the food was good but the service was slow and no idea how to serve the wine. Especially as the Restaurant was quiet to have service this slow. The next evening the one member of staff didn't even no what was on the menu. The cost of the car park we felt was very costly being charged £12 per night. Our visit here is to visit our niece who had a brain stem stroke two years ago and she is only 42. As you can imagine it is a very stressful visit and we expect a higher standard of service to make it enjoyable stay. Especially when you are staying in a four star Hotel.

There remain signs of the hotel's original high quality interior design and fitting out. The en suite and bedroom were satisfactory except for the replenishment of tea/coffee and toiletries. It was not possible to obtain appropriate refreshment when requested.

Rapid check-in which was appreciated. Free parking which was very much appreciated. Good warm "Privilege Level" room. Great to have a Nespresso machine in the room, which we did use. The only suggestion for improvement I have is that the Towels were awful. There were more like large dishcloths, thin and not fit for purpose.

Nice hotel/room. Staff were generally nice but inexperienced. We went with a deal from Secret Escapes-no one seemed to know what it was about and had to keep showing the email with the confirmation from SE. Receptionist took a long time to find our booking, to the extent we were worried we didn't have a booking. As part of the SE deal we had £40 allowance for dinner, receptionist said she didn't know how to apply allowance and to ask restaurant. Restaurant didn't know what to do either. Our room was great but the window was left slightly opened, as the curtains were closed we didn't notice until next day. At breakfast the guy at the entrance looked confused that we were with a 2 year old and said he didn't appear in his list, he was rude about it and reluctantly let us in. As part of SE deal we also had late check out until 2. At 12 we had a phone call from reception asking us to leave. On the way out we had to show SE email again to get our dinner allowance from the bill and avoid a charge for late check out.

Room had huge cobweb and needed re decorating. Paintwork was very badly damaged. Threadbare carpet on main stairs. Poor service in bar and restaurant. When I asked about afternoon tea I was told very gruffly to sort it out at reception. When I rand down for room service there was no answer so could not order the fresh milk for tea in the top. That is advertised. Service at breakfast was appalling. Took 3 people 10 minutes to find some butter.

It was ok but not child friendly

I stayed at your hotel a few years ago and had a great time but stayed again and thought the room was shabby, breakfast wasn’t the quality expected and the swimming pool staff were unfriendly. It felt very much as though the children were not welcome. Elderly guests wanted to swim lengths and hogged the pool so the children had limited space to swim or splash. We were told off for throwing a float but I watched the children like a hawk as felt very uncomfortable with the other guests glares and I am very respectful of others. The children were not throwing floats so I was very cross with this accusation so we left the pool. The evening meal was lovely and the restaurant staff extremely friendly and professional.

Air con blowing out cold air.

Loved the hotel but the aircon in the room was blowing out cold air, Friday night we were out and got in late and tired so didn’t notice it as much, Saturday night the temperature dropped so we informed you about it, the guy from reception came up and said it was fixed but it wasn’t, we called again to reception and was told someone would come up, no one did so I went down to reception and was told someone would be up, when the lady came up she had a note with the instructions on how to turn the air on to hot but it didn’t work, she then said she would send a heater up, I said this isn’t really what you should be doing, I asked if the air con was Brocken in all the other rooms, she said no, so I said wouldn’t it be he right thing to move us to another room as my partner was sat in bed fully clothed with the quilt around her and had been for over two hours, my partner lives in close to Bristol and I’m up in Barnstable so Exeter is perfect for us to meet once a month. The flow of our weekend was Brocken and changing rooms isn’t really a problem if it’s done as soon as there was a problem which it wasn’t and a heater brought to the room isn’t good either, apart from that liked the hotel but think we might try somewhere else in the future. Good location, excellent reception staff, nice room - all marred by poor dining arrangements. Told there would be an hour`s wait for a table, and also that the last order would be at 9pm, ie, don`t bother!
