This hotel is sadly a joke but could be excellent with very little work. I stayed here, rather than the, also 3 star, Premier Inn whose standards I am very familiar with, because I was travelling by National Express bus to visit my brother, who does not drive and lives in Farnham. He had warned me that your hotel was tired but there are certain things one expects, however tired a place is. My first night was spent in room 213. The bathroom fan could not be turned off and was very noisy, keeping me awake most of the night. The toilet did not flush properly. In the morning I reported this and was told it would be fixed and the receptionist agreed to move me to another room if this did not happen. Upon my return, late in the afternoon, I was told it was fixed. It was not. One receptionist moved me to another room (208) and asked another to check the flush in both. The gentleman insisted that the flush was working in 213 so I demonstrated that it was not. Very little water was leaving the cistern before it refilled. I moved my things to room 208. The receptionist had to demonstrate how to flush the toilet in this room. This should not be necessary whatever the standard of a hotel. The extractor fan was not working, but I decided not to mention this and looked forward to a good, quiet nights sleep. DUE TO THE FACT THAT YOU HAVE THE MOST COMFORTABLE BEDS THAT I HAVE FOUND IN ANY HOTEL THIS HAPPENED. PLEASE LET ME KNOW THE MAKE OF THE BED AND MATRESS! There was mould at the base of the shower screen and around the bath seal in both rooms. I had booked a breakfast for both days. On the whole this was good but the plates, while being in a plate warmer, were stone cold on both mornings. The fried eggs looked as though they had been standing for a very long time so on the first morning I requested a fresh one. I was told that this would be seen to and to sit down while it was prepared. A considerable time later a fresh tray of eggs was bought out rather than one, quickly cooked, being brought to my table as the staff had suggested would happen. Try cooking less at a time or cook to order as with poached eggs. The bacon which was stone cold by this time was of excellent quality. Coffee was peasant but I could not understand why I was given a pot on the first morning and it was poured by staff on the second morning. Likewise, the milk for cereals was in a jug one day and an urn the next. For guests it would be helpful to stick to one way so that they know what to expect. The carpet at the foot of the stairs to my rooms was worn to the warp and weft and was in urgent need of replacement especially as this is a public area. The staff, of who there were ample, were all very peasant and doing the best in a building which could be wonderful but is in desperate need of sorting out. I will probably stay with you again if I visit my brother as you are in such a convenient position, but would hope to see some improvement.

We were in room 17 which was above the bar and extremely noisy. We were there for a party but placing us and a child in that room was a joke. The noise stopped at 4:30am!! The pull out bed was lumpy and the main bed hadn't been made properly, the sheet hadn't been put on the bed and I had to do this when getting in bed. The key also stopped working several times and we had to take it back to reception. The cold tap to the bath didn't work at all. The breakfast was Good, a wide range of choice. Coffee in pots or on the side would be good rather than asking the waitress for a tip up.

« STARTED OFF ON THE WRONG FOOT »

I had prepaid for an executive room. Was given a very unsatisfactory one which was certainly not executive grading. However, when this was brought to the Manager's attention the matter, was resolved without fuss. I have now experienced 3 different rooms and found that in all 3 the basins in the bathrooms needed to be fixed as far as the plugs were concerned. The water took ages to drain out.

We arrived late at the hotel and went to bed fairly promptly. Unfortunately our room was right above the bar this meant the noise was constant until the small hours. I couldn't move rooms because my daughter slept through it. From a positive point of view the staff were friendly and nice, the room was spacious and it was a lovely old hotel. But all in all I would rather be allocated a quieter room or be warned when checking in it would be noisy.

« Tired Hotel that was too Hot »

The hotel was not chosen by me, it was picked by my company. On check-in I was told that there were no double rooms and that I had been assigned a twin room in the wing of the hotel that had not been refurbished. That in itself was not a problem - what did cause me issues throughout my stay was the heat. According to the online details for the hotel it has air conditioning, however what it should say is that large parts of the hotel do not. Again, I accept that in the UK that not every hotel in the UK has air conditioning. What I was surprised at was the fact that my window was shut tight when I entered so my room was like an oven on one of the hottest days we have had this year. Especially as the 'helpful' advice to all the guests checking in was to "open the window". Given the high levels of heat it would have been useful to know there was a fan in my wardrobe - not that it made much difference. There was one small bottle of water and the 24-7 room service when I asked for water & ice is not actually 24/7 and you have to pay a £5 room charge which is outrageous. Also, kitting the rooms with winter duvets in the height of a heatwave is showing an alarming lack of common sense. Extra sheets would have been better. Apart from the lack of customer support for the heat, the hotel itself is rather tired and in need of a makeover. The carpet is stained in places and the layout is a bit random when it comes the dining room. In fact when I tried to use the 'restaurant' on my first night I was prevented from doing so by a member of staff and I ended up eating both nights in the bar. Checkout on my final morning was slow and inefficient, given the size of the hotel I was surprised that only one member of staff was on duty. Overall, I hope do not have to come back and stay at this hotel given how much my company paid for my stay.

It was very hot, and one fan with hardly any plugs in the room to place the fan in a good position. The TV didn't work and had to call someone from reception who also couldn't fix it. The shower temperature was either cold or extremely hot and hardly came put of the shower head. I've stayed at Mercure hotels before which is why I became a member but this experience wasn't what I expected.

good location, overal impression of a 'skeleton' staff, or understaffed, especially at breakfast room lighting very poor, hardly bright enough to read with bathroom floor slippery when wet - very poor, no (hot?) water from left hand taps in bath or basin, shower was a barely adequate trickle

Though the staff were very friendly, I probably would not use this hotel again. Check in took a very long time due to a couple before having problems with their booking and there were two more people behind us. There was always things in the hallway to our room (hoovers, trays, bin bags etc), the floor made a lot of noise when you walked on it (though I appreciate it is a very old building), there was a dog barking in the middle of the night in a room a few doors down, the pictures on the walls were not even straight and the breakfast menu offered vegetarian sausages on the buffet but it turned out that these had to be ordered separately and so did not arrive with the rest of the buffet breakfast. The beds were very comfortable though.

We received one of the older rooms, which was very cool, it was large and had everything we needed. While there was no A/C the windows provided an adequate breeze to keep us cool at night. The breakfast buffet was delicious with lots of options. We did miss the breakfast the 2nd morning because they stopped serving at 10 instead of 10:30. We were not aware that breakfast ended at different times on different days. Besides that, everything was great!
