I had booked a one night spa package through Spa Breaks as a surprise treat for my friend who was having her final wedding dress fitting that day in Blackburn. Hotel reception staff and in particular the restaurant staff were great and the meal we had that evening was lovely. The biggest let down was the spa experience which was the main reason for our stay as my friend needed a nice relaxing day and treatment. We arrived for our treatments at 4pm to be told there was no record of our booking. After 5mins of waiting we were told that our booking had been cancelled the day before by the manager - there were no notes to say why and we had not been called/text/emailed to let us know. We were told then that our original booking slots had been filled and there was no space for us but the guy on reception said he would try see if the spa could squeeze us in. We agreed to use the normal pool and thermal suite facilities whilst he looked into it further. The thermal suite itself was ok but we felt like we couldn't really relax as we were so disappointed and I felt terrible as I had arranged it as a surprise for my friend but it hadn't gone to plan. There was no ice in the thermal suite and no plastic cups left to have a drink of water so we didn't stay that long. I went up to the spa reception again for an update and was told that it wasn't the spa's fault our bookings was cancelled and that they had been told by Spa Breaks (who we booked through) to cancel them. I don't believe this at all. I have used Spa Breaks before and they have no correspondence with the spas. You cannot even book the treatments in the first place with them and if you want to cancel/change you need to do it directly with the hotel. We had paid in advance so there is reason for Spa Breaks to cancel. Also, if spa breaks had cancelled our booking, why were we still booked in for the hotel and dinner part of the package. When we asked the guy for a copy of the email from Spa Breaks he said he didn't have anything. I asked why didn't they think to call us, the guests, to check - again no reason. He looked completely out of his depth and just kept telling us it was Spa Breaks fault. Several times he kept offering us a "complimentary" treatment the next day to make up for it. I lost count of the amount of times I told him we had already paid for a 40min treatment as part of the package. He didn't seem to understand this at all. Eventually he said he could fit us in at 10am the next morning. This didn't suit as my friend needed to take her kids to swimming lessons and we were planning to leave early. I asked the guy about refunding what we had paid for the treatment and he didn't know the answer. He just said they needed to check whose fault it was (although he'd already said it was Spa Breaks) and that we were already using the majority of the package deal as we were getting the overnight stay and meal, insinuating that it doesn't matter if we don't get the treatment. I was so shocked at this. I've booked spa packages numerous times at other hotels when treatments were cancelled because of staff illness etc and they immediately agreed to refund a portion of the spa package price. My friend had to call her husband to rearrange plans then just so we could stay late and get the 10am treatment. When we confirmed we would do the 10am treatment I expected something additional to make up for the clear lies we were being told - like extending the treatment to one hour or offering something additional. We received nothing. The guy again tried to suggest he was doing us a favour by giving it to us "complimentary" despite it being in our package. Overall - it was such a disappointing experience. It really ruined our day because we couldn't relax in the facilities wondering if we might get an appointment and my friend was worrying about having to stay later for the 10am treatment. We had intentionally booked the treatments for the day we arrived so we could make the most of them and relax in the thermal suite afterwards. Instead we had to shower to rinse off all the oils and get straight into the car. It wasn't in any way relaxing. The treatment itself was fantastic and the girls working there were terrific. But the management of that whole spa is terrible. We were made to feel like second class guests because we had booked a package deal and like we should just make do with the hotel stay as that was already a good price.

I was the organiser of a function and was upgraded to the bridal suite, room lovely, but no fans available, there are several windows in this room so sunlight was making the room hotter than a normal smaller room. Edwina the event manager for the day was 10/10 so professional unflappable and made the event flow with nothing being too much trouble

Great with very few issues at all, maybe the room and the pool areas heat could be handled a little better, I.e in 25+ degree heat, the pools heater was on, making it really warm. Can’t cater to everyones tastes though eh!

The hotel is lovely and historic, but I had a cold shower 4 out of the 5 mornings. Unfortunately the room was quite warm due to the heat wave, but with no moving air at all it was uncomfortable a few nights. The breakfast each morning was great.

« Very good but disappointed with spa »

The overall stay was excellent from the rooms to the food and drink. Very disappointed with the spa as our appointment was at 11.30am but on arrival was told a therapist had phoned in sick so could only take 3 of the party of 4 at 11.30am with one of us having to wait a full hour until 12 30!! Not really offered anything in compensation of that and the 4 of us (maybe more) was thinking of returning in Oct for the Rocky Horror Show we saw advertised. We are thinking about this as it did spoil what should have been a fabulous 50th birthday weekend for me (this was mentioned at the time of booking but not recognised)

I was satisfied with the facilities and the staff was very friendly. I was not used to having no air conditioning, face clothes, and a refrigerator for cold beverages in the room. It seems to be a difference in culture but I was able to adjust. The people were friendly and helpful and the food was very good as well

Overall we had a good experience except for 2 factors: 1. There is no kids menu in the restaurant - a MAJOR downside - this meant we had a very unhappy child and we had to fork out £15 for a sandwich, soup that was too refined for kids' taste buds, and a glass of milk. Every other hotel restaurant we've been to offers some basic kids options. Would be very reluctant to stay again due to this factor alone. Disappointing. 2. Doors to rooms are not very sound proofed, therefore we could hear (albeit very noisy guests) shouting and banging up and down corridors. 3. No fan in room - it was very hot, no air circulating. 4. Like the breakfast.

Booked two nights only stayed the first night due to have an uncomfortable nights sleep due to booked a double room but ended up with 2 singles put together and one of them was extremely loud when moving in the bed there for went home and didn’t stay Saturday even though the Saturday was dearer, it was mine and my wife’s anniversary and basically ruined it for us
